It's a sure sign of trouble when a chain saw is necessary.

    Sundays have always been a day of rest for me, but every so often, an emergency happens and I have to take exception to the rule, and last Sunday was one of those days. I got a phone call Saturday evening about a tree that was cut down, and when it hit the ground, bee filled the air. It has been my experience that whenever a tree has come down and bees are in it, the death clock for the colony begins ticking. It was for this very reason I took exception to my day of rest because immediate action was required, and any delay could only prove disastrous for the bees.
    Every time I go out to wrangle bees, there is always an element of danger involved, it comes with the occupation. However, on this adventure, there was the added dimension of a chainsaw which can really prove dangerous. I have worked with and been around heavy machinery and saws for over 50 years, and I am very much aware of how potentially dangerous the tools we use to make our jobs easier are at the same time capable of doing terrible things to our bodies if things go wrong.
    When I arrived at the site at about 10:45 in the morning, the bees had settled down quite a bit, but there were still bees flying around the entrance to the hive which was now in a new location, about 20 feet from it's origin. After assessing what needed to get done, I started the chainsaw and began cutting the tree to expose the hive. Within just a few minutes, I was staring at a hive that was at least 6 foot long and had over 30,000 bees in it. After removing 90% of the comb and a good number of the bees, I realized I was going to have to cut more of the tree to be able to remove and rescue the rest of the bees and comb. I fired up the chainsaw once again and removed another quarter section of the log gaining access to the bees and comb. It was at this point that the queen revealed herself and I caged her, set her to the side in the shade, and then vacuumed up the rest of the bees. By the time I had loaded the van up with my equipment and the bees and headed back to the abbey, it was just after 4:00.
    It was on the ride back to the abbey that I realized I had not explained my plans for settling these bees and what I was going to do with all the honey that was removed with them. Because of that, I decided I shot a bit more video over the next two days and include it to give a clear idea of exactly what I do to settle bees after a removal.
    Before you begin to watch the video, due to it's length, you may consider fixing yourself a bit of sustenance to go along with your morning libation. That way, you can eat, drink, and be merry while viewing yet another bee wrangling adventure. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

    This is epic wrangling! A chain saw?! Wow. You get the coolest calls. The comb is so dark! Is that normal? Does it mean it is old? Those girls must have been able to control the beetles and the moths. Clever, hard working bees -- just like you!! Peace my brother, you are an inspiration.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      I'd have to agree with epic, a 27 minute video, that's a long one. As the comb ages, it gets darker. That's just the natural process. As you pointed out, these bees had the beetles and moths in check, and I think they will add another great dimension to our bees with their genetics. God's peace Juliana.

    An old bow saw. Developed in the 1940s. ( May go farther back than that.) used a lot in forestry, logging, pulpwood industry in the southeastern states. I am sure they were used elsewhere also. The bowbar had it’s dangers and was used for bucking mostly. It fell out of favor for the “less” dangerous and more useful straight bar.

    I just caught another swarm. No wrangling involved they just moved into an empty box(YES I AM STOKED). Hive number 3 this year. I lost 2 (they were weak hives when I brought them home) I didn't do 41 but I have bees now. I know everyone says to start with 2 hives, that did not pan out, I will be content with the one very strong swarm I caught in my front yard. 5 full frames in a nuk I have to be ready to move them into a 10 frame box, they are bringing pollen in like mad. I tried to feed these bees they do not want sugar syrup, they ignore it. But in 60 seconds I estimate 200 bees carried pollen in. They are coming back heavy, just loaded down with white pollen.(some little vine with little white flowers grows all over S.W. Florida) I used a long tack with a very small diameter or a sharp knife and carefully punch small holes, it doesn't have to be very big, bees tongues(proboscis) are little. I don't put feeder jars on the hive I have had issues with robbing(my hives were weak) so I feed away from the hive, they can smell the sugar water so they go to it but only in death, right now they don't want it, the ants get it.(another reason to feed away from the hive). I think I like swarm traps more than wrangling. A whole lot less work. Yours and the DirtRoosters competition should be 2 parts. Part 1 wrangling. Part 2 swarm trapping. The two of you should get together and do a video on the seasons end as well. Happy Beekeeping to you.

    Mr. Ed, I've used quart jars for years but recently upgraded to new gallon paint cans. Works great. For fall feeding I'll put up to 4 pails on a hive on a time. One thing I learned is the can does tend to rust on the outside (lid and inside do not) so I may paint the outside of the cans next time.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому +1

      It is a a wicked chain saw blade that cuts wood some kind of fast......and very dangerous as well. There were over 25,000 bees along with almost 4 gallons of honey that they had stored up. Now, the bees are doing great in their new home at the abbey.I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. I have been rescuing bees from being needlessly destroyed for over 6 years now, and hope to continue to do so for many more years to come. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Sammi.

      @@JeffHorchoff I actually just recently got into doing a few things involving bees. Such as planting flowers to help with them getting what they need for honey and such, and will hopefully try out building my first bee house early next spring to avoid having them nest in my apartment and possibly causing issues to myself or the bees as the videos you post still help me keep a great interest in possible bee keeping as it seems like a very fun and filling occupation. And God's peace to you as well, Mr. Ed
