I loved avengers, guardians of the Galaxy- eternals though, had a good cast but just wasn't that interesting.
I just watched eternals the other night. Definitely wasn’t impressed. I only watched to satisfy my curiosity for phase 4 and how the Disney + shows tie in, but I’m growing tired of the woke-ism. I was a fan ever since the first iron man. I think my excitement began to die though after Endgame.
what exactly was woke about Eternals? Having a 'diverse' cast doesn't make something woke. It would be really weird if a bunch of aliens made to look like humans, were sent to ancient mesopotamia and all looked european.

For context I get Your point Brotha, I'm Black Myself. But the story isn't from Book/Novel format where they can be Reimagined once it's put in Animation, or Live Action. It's source material is a *Comic book* where visualizations in the form of *Pictures* were made to further *immerse* the Reader into the *Story.* The *Look* of the Characters, the Surroundings, there's already a *Visual component.* It wouldn't be feasible to just swap the Characters for No Reason. If I was a Fan of Eternals, I'd be pretty Preplexed and Pissed on why they're making the Character purple or orange if they weren't depicted as being purple or orange from the Source material. It's pretty Disrespectful to the Original Creator Jack Kirby, and Disrespectful to the fans of said Material. And Wholly Unnecessary.
If Disney continues on this path, everything that made the MCU great will slowly fall away a little at a time until it will just be a shell of what it was - It's a real shame.
Look on the bright side celebrities are becoming more irrelevant and they're going mad because of it.

By making MCU movies more woke, they are trying to appeal to a very small demographic or an even smaller part of that demographic that actual watches or cares about these movies. While alienating all the fans that have loved and supported this franchise for years. It's like putting all your eggs in the wrong basket.

Spider-Man into the spider verse is a great example of how you do it well. Never once did Spider Gwen mention anything close to “girl power” or you guys are inferior”. Miles morales’ race was never force fed to us - it was just woven seamlessly into the story. It was very authentic. Female doc oc was a great twist and it was clear to Peter Parker that this isn’t the doc oc from his universe (that we would’ve expected as well). Manga spider girl was a really fun an unexpected treat.
The whole movie is woke trash. Spider-Man is a white male. Period.
@@lawrence09151 Peter Parker is a white male. Miles Morales is a half-black, half-hispanic young man. Now, I don’t personally like his character as much as Peter, but that doesn’t mean he’s poorly written, and Into the Spider-verse was an incredibly well-done film.

The issue (for me at least) isn’t whether the character is LGBTQ or a “Minority”, disabled, etc., It’s the way they’re being presented and represented. They make identity politics the overarching theme of the film, rather than making it just a very small subtle side note or a “fun fact”. They can make a cool superhero who just happens to be a [insert identity here], but no they instead make a [insert identity here] who just happens to be a superhero. Wokeness to me is just unwatchable and nauseatingly patronizing.
Exactly! The gay character from Eternals, his sexuality has nothing to do with the plot at all. It was just thrown in there.
Example, if Marvel created a gay character like Peter Parker, instead of him being bullied as a nerd, he gets bullied for being homosexual for having a crush on another male character. Then later he becomes a superhero. That's a better way to represent because his sexuality played an important role to his character's upbringing and plot.

I had been a huge Marvel fan for over 40 years. Wokeness in both Marvel comics and the MCU has changed that entirely, and I now avoid everything coming from Marvel.

I do agree, there are still a few comics that I read, more for the creators that I like. I haven’t seen the last 2 movies, begrudgingly saw Black Widow, haven’t bothered watching anything on Disney+ which I dropped after Falcon/Winter Soldier so sadly I feel the same way after reading comics for 46 years.

as someone who is a marvel fan, i found the movie entertaining. It’s not the best marvel movie but it is certainly not bad (in my opinion). What i don’t get with the woman in the video and many of the people in the comments is that there needs to be an explanation for some of the characters being gay, or being colored, or being female. Like wtf does it matter. Why does there have to be an explanation. If there does have to be an explanation, why doesn’t there have to be an explanation for characters like ikarus and druig (the 2 eternals that are straight, white males). at the end of the day why tf do u care about the color, sexuality or race of the characters, it’s not like it affected the plot of the story at all. I swear some of you are acting like diversity is the plague. just stop being intolerant

@@mclovin4495 now i haven’t read the eternals comics, but obviously somethings in the movie are going to be different from the comics. Also the eternals aren’t comic book characters like peter parker, steve rogers, tchalla, shang chi, etc where those characters have to be a specific race. with the eternals however, i believe there is a lot more flexibility on that. For example, nick fury is originally white in the comics, yet they cast samuel l jackson to play him, and there were no complaints there.
I think this started before Eternals and was much more toxic in Captain Marvel when they were unnecessarily feeding feminism when it was completely irrelevant, and even Brie Larson's interviews were hilarious and somewhat noxious as well, and then replacing Thor with a female Thor are the things that makes no sense.
But at least female Thor makes sense as it is a comic storyline rather than to meet an industry target

Yeah unfortunately I'm done with the franchise, which is too bad because I love the classic comic books. I say classic because a lot of the new comics have gone woke and are just not appealing to me.

I own a comic book store and interest in all things Marvel is low right now. Nobody is excited for Eternals, Ms Marvel, the Marvels and a bunch of other diversity movies they have planned. Right now Moon Knight and Spider-Man are the only two properties that have people really excited
Don't forget other sequels like Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Guardians 3, and Thor 4
All of my local comic shops are hurting & some have issues almost a year old on the new release wall. The employees have to rely on sales (1/2 off new books) & collectibles. I was a die hard Marvel fan buying up to 12 books in a given month. Then I see how they treat fans & radically alter characters all too often & I quit, even Star Wars. Now Disney/ Marvel further pisses on their foundation by goofing over creators & their families. Sorry to rant, but on some levels I feel your pain & notice it often.

Star Trek the original series had a multi cast crew. But the difference is that it was not forced! All the characters and stories blended very well together! The stories had well written social commentaries to them without having to force any agenda down your throat!

Yeah, no…they were looking for a diverse cast for an agenda, not for who is best. Because if they were going on the source material (aka the comics) there would be less. They gender/ethnicity switched many of the roles from what the comic book was.

My biggest frustration is that Marvel has had LGB characters like Wiccan, Hulkling, and Northstar forever who were always written as such yet they aren’t represented. Let’s also remember that Marvel had Storm, a black female from Africa, decades ago. The biggest issue is Disney’s monopoly with all of these creative properties. They’ve been losing the fan base for decades. Hollywood will crumble.
Not to forget Monica Rambeau who had the name Captain Marvel before Carol Danvers (Back when she was still Ms. Marvel). That was the Captain Marvel I grew up with.

Yes, this exactly. This is with media in general. There long already were diverse casts of characters in video games, movies, TV shows, books, some of whom were created by minorities (as far back as the 1940's!). And yet, suddenly we were told that "there wasn't enough diversity" in terms of characters and the people who created them. When diversity isn't enough diversity, I guess. 😅

It's a certain tactic to make the person who does have issues with X or Y docile. I'd argue it's a form of psychological abuse because it subtly says to shut up and take whatever is coming at you.

wokeness is just a right wing trigger word for 'maturing'. i prefer to be in the maturing category of people who realize that for too long the world has worked in one certain way, privileging the same people, over and over and over and over again throughout history, therefore becoming more mature in one's thinking (aka "woke") simply means waking up to the fact that this has been happening. so when you start including people of different backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual preferences, genders, etc., it's going to cause friction, particularly amongst people who were pretty comfortable with the way things worked before. there are definitely extremes. the extreme "anti-woke" crowd are straight-up white supremacists, racists, bigots, and willfully ignorant. but there's a pretty wide spectrum going on. i for one am pretty happy having 'woke' shoved in our faces (by contrast, we had 'asleep and ignorant' shoved in our faces for decades, maybe even centuries). so it's nice to see the pendulum start swinging the other way. and when you start noticing that the "anti-woke" crowd are anti-BLM, anti-vax, pro-Trump, usually conservatives, Republicans, it starts making those of us on the mature side (the 'woke' side) proud of the title. so keep using it. keep trying to weaponize it. because in the end, in a progressive nation and world, that can only backfire.
Yes and no. Marvel has done a pretty good job of putting a little bit of everyone in its properties. Falcon and the Winter Soldier had some good woke content but it also called out the terrorists and told them they had the right values and the wrong way of going about them. The other bad guy, John Walker cap is given a lot of buildup as a person with good intentions and bad acts. So same weight given to both sides and a pretty overt message against extremism on both sides.
The Eternals also had some good representation without feeling heavy handed. These were polytheistic gods with a range of cultures. They felt real and they represented the whole world in all of its diversity.
I agree. This video focused a lot on the gender/race swapping as well as the gay couple... but if we look back at the movie. Phastos was first presented as an eternal, then shown that he was gay with a husband and kid at home. Yes they spent a portion of time focusing on it when trying to recruit him to join the team again but after that it kind of left the screen until the ending.
As far as gender swapping roles goes... its not necessarily hurting anything to make a male character female or a female character male. It added balance to a male dominated comic and also gave more roles to new people.
Yes, I’m going to stop going to marvel movies for this exact reason. If they created new characters fine, but taking already created characters and forcing their gender identity narrative onto it is exactly why I won’t go see any more marvel movies. Superman is not bi, never was and making him bi now is stupid.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) looks into the modern politics of surveilance and unchecked government power. Captain America: Civil War (2016) examines the reprecussions of the freedom that the Avengers had and how the government should interfere with their freedom of choice. Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) elaborates on the identity politics placed on the mantle of Captain America and brings light to the anti-blackness seen within the history of Captain America's name.
Hell, even Stan Lee wrote in one of his comics that it's worth putting politics inside of Marvel comic book stories since it works as a way to communicate real ideas through fictional characters.
If minorities appearing in modern media is what tips the bowl over for political statements, then that's a pathetic way to examine new Marvel content, since there have been political statements made since the beginning.

Killing? Disney is the Destroyer of Cinematic Universes. They already destroyed Star Wars and Marvel. That scene during the huge battle against Thano's army when all the women were together was also extremely cringe inducing. I cracked up looking at the poster for Eternals because it was so ridiculously pandering to the 'diversity' standard. I was like "I bet one of them is gay too" and sure enough, one of them was. Kind of hilarious, but also kind of sad.
Tbh, I’m not blaming Disney specifically for this. Disney’s owned marvel for almost as long as the mcu movies existed, at least as long as it was confirmed that it was going to be a cinematic universe. These politics arose in the marvel comics before they arose in the movies, and that was before Disney bought marvel.

I won’t pay for any of it in the theater. So they won’t make a penny off me.

I agree that adding diversity shouldn't have more priority than a good story, and if the story synergizes with parts of some character's identity that's even better, but still, there doesn't really need to always be a reason for characters to have a specific trait. Why does there need to be a reason for a character to be black anymore than for a character to be white? Why does there need to be a reason for a character to be gay anymore than for a character to be straight? Sometimes writers just make their characters different because that's how humans work: we're all different.

Well for most characters as long as they aren't too complicated you can change the race and various other things for instance the Punisher's race was changed for a short time and it was still just the punisher although he had a different name but for certain characters if they are complex enough it shouldn't be changed for instance characters like Magneto, Jubilee, Miles Morales, Miguel O'Hara, and Daredevil all have certain traits that would hurt the character if changed there's various other arguments one could make but my point is some characters need to remain the same in order to fully represent the character properly
I think the problem is when someone thinks “I need a minority character” instead of “I have an idea for a character who happens to be a minority.” War Machine is a good example of the latter. There’s no particular reason why he needs to be black, but it’s how his creators saw him, and I couldn’t imagine him any other way.

I’m Hispanic, i grew up watching the x-men cartoons, spider-man, btas, etc. you don’t see many Hispanics in those shows or comics but that didn’t bother me in the slightest. I wasn’t mad because none of the superheroes looked like me. My favorite character was Colossus, a huge Russian man who could change his body into organic metal. That obviously doesn’t represent my heritage but that didn’t matter. I’m so tired of the whole woke agenda. So far this marvel phase hasn’t passed muster for me. Black Widow was terrible for the most part, barely entertaining, Shang Chi was ok but not great, the Disney+ shows are not good, especially compared to the marvel Netflix shows Daredevil, Jones and Punisher. Firstly, I think this movie had some of the best action sequences in Marvel, sure they were few but these characters really sold the “godlike” narrative for me.
When it comes to “woke” I actually don’t have a problem with gender bending or race swapping. When you’re dealing with older characters that were made decades ago, it makes sense to update them for modern audiences. The caveat to that is it has to make sense. There is nothing saying the Eternals cant be multiracial group. What doesn’t make sense to me is why is there a deaf eternal? The Eternals are literally meant to be genetic perfection, and here we have one of them who is hearing impaired. Nothing against the actress, she did good, it’s just I don’t understand why the inclusion of a deaf Eternal, I didn’t think there was much outcry for deaf representation.
I did notice though that every white Eternal at one point in the movie turned on the rest of the group. AngeThena, Druig, Sprite and Ikaris are the only white Eternals and every last one of them played an antagonist to some extent in the movie. Diversifying a cast is fine, but we shouldn’t have to cut other heroes down to do it.
And also why was Kingo benched from the final fight? He was nuking deviants earlier in the movie very easily it seems he would have been an essential part of the team. I get he didn’t want to fight Ikaris, but still it’s so random to write the story that way to leave him out
Thena turned against the group because she unconsciously knew the true purpose of the eternals. The twist was that there was reason in her madness. That made her one of the best eternals in book.
Re Kingo. I like that he decided to bench himself. It was an interesting contrast with Ikarus. Both of them shared the same principles with the difference that one was ready to kill for them while the other chose not to hurt his friends over the said principles.
There's actually quite a bit of desire for deaf representation. See the excitement over the inclusion of Maya Lopez/Echo in Hawkeye, especially since they did it really well with both her and showing that Clint, who also has hearing loss, have different experiences with their different levels of deafness.
Also, a lot of deaf people don't see it as a disability so it makes sense, if you're keeping that audience in mind, to have an Eternal who is deaf but not "imperfect". Tho I could see someone who's hearing and/or not part of the deaf community not seeing that -- most hearing persons consider deafness a disability.

Yes. I am a hard-core comic book nerd and comic book collector. I went to almost every marvel movie on opening night but ever since Captain Marvel they have obviously been far more interested in pushing a narrative than telling a story and I simply refuse to give them my money. With films I'd like to see the figures on how much profit was made with the film as they always show the Box Office take, which includes huge theater costs and thus has no relationship to profits.
Edit to add: I know my local theater owner says that, on average, he makes 15% off of the gross tickets sales that 75% goes into the costs of operating the theater itself and another 10% goes for the hire of the films. based on that information that means that if those average hold true for all theaters then box office sales of $100 million means the production company would get about $10 million from the gross ticket sales. Thus, a film that costs $200 million to make would have to have gross ticket sales in the $2 billion range to meet costs.

Once Iron Man died the franchise died to me.
I had hoped they would do right by The Eternals movie with such a diverse cast, but to see each Eternal had only one power when all Eternals have multiple powers in the comic books, and to see they have a gay one, a not so easily gender indentifiable one and a deaf one made me know Marvel is pushing an agenda on numerous different fronts.
I hope with the seriously bad reviews and really bad box office proceeds they learned their lesson in foisting that upon us, but we will have to wait and see what is to come in more of their films.
And if you are wondering, yes I went to a theater to see it, regrettably... but I did like the reveal of Star Fox and The Black Knight in the extra scenes.

You can have diversity in media and make it work. Miles Morales is such an example: he's likeable, relatable, plausible, and moral; the fact that he's black is not the focus, so nothing about him feels like a political message. It's when you have an unrealistic level of diversity that it feels clunky, like a square peg got whacked into a round hole, and it fails to draw the audience in because of it.

I find it funny that people assume that comic fans are only straight white guys. I'm a mixed raced gay man, I like sometimes seeing myself in a superhero story. All that doesn't need to be extremely story integral, you can be a character of a color or sexuality with any backstory, any history, any trauma practically. No, corporations don't really give a fuck, but I still want to periodically see a hero that looks like me and not always just Chad. Sometimes it's just excited to see my identity in my favorite media and I'm sure that goes for others.
Several months ago my company showed us a bunch of polling day that they just bought. The focus was on the expected increase in online sales for the holidays, but it included a bunch more. What caught my attention was the claim that over 60% of customers in the 15 to 30 something range said a company's politics would significantly influenced their purchases. Immediately after that my employer rolled out an ever-growing list of empowerment programs. I'm sure this is the same data, and therefore the same solution, being rolled out by Nike, Microsoft, Disney and everyone else. At what point this goes too far, we'll have to see. I know for me, as a Captain America fan I look forward to watching the Falcon and the Winter Soldier; but it got hard to get through to the end with all the beat you over the head preaching.

The only valid and nuanced point made in this video is done in regards to Blade (1998), how people didn't comment on it being a movie about a black superhero. I think the reason why people were so ready to comment on Black Panther (2018) being about a black superhero is because there was a pretty big drought of consistent black superhero stories between these 20 years. In the MCU alone, Black Panther was the first black superhero (discounting Luke Cage on Netflix) lead movie.
In the time between Iron Man and Black Panther, mostly white characters were being introduced. Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Doctor Strange just to name a few. So when a prominent black lead movie appeared, it was worth talking about that since the MCU had a very caucasian focused main cast.
Outside of the MCU, Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse (2018) starred Miles Morales, a mixed black and latino character, and everyone loved it. I don't even remember many people commenting on the fact Miles was a minority, a mixed one at that.
What really gets fans pissed ( and i mean real comic book fans ) is that they and including me finally get to see our favorite characters come to life on film and to get ruined by wokeness! These identity politics ruins movies and characters just to please a very small group of people who don't even read comics let alone go to the comic shop on wednesday to pick up there pull list. Everything is shoehorned and force feed down our throats, nothing is organic. If you want so badly diversity then create new and well written characters to add to the mix instead of ruining character and their 20 plus years of history.

I saw the writing on the wall (figuratively and literally) when I first saw a poster for this film on the wall of my local theater. It had The Eternals displayed prominently at the top with the phrase "In the beginning…" underneath it. I just said "Really? Really…" and was immediately skeptical of the film. You can guarantee that they would never take a statement from the Quran or other "holy books" to promote a film about ancient beings that created everything. But here they were, taking the iconic first three words of the Judeo-Christian Bible. We know that these Hollywood types are openly anti-Christian and Christianity, but talk about a blatant spit in the face. I immediately lost any interest in seeing this film. But, maybe that's just me.

The only gripe I had, especially now after watching your video, was the deaf Quicksilver girl. Why would the celestial make an eternal without the ability to hear? Was it by design, or an accident? And the most immersion breaking of all: Why would they all know ASL in 5000 BC???
I don't like wokeness pushed down upon me, but I actually feel like it was really well done here. Before watching the movie I kind of expected to see the group of eternals more or less like I saw Thors asgardian friends: Bland, washed out and unintersting. The diversity actually made it easier to recognize the different characters. Also, from a lore's perspective: Why wouldn't they be different. I could see an argument of them all being made to look middle eastern (as they first arrived in Babylon), but I am fine with them having white characters as well - and if they have white characters, why not characters from all over.
Also I like how they handled the gay character. They didn't make a whole woke argument about how great it is that he is gay and bluh bluh bluh -- no, they just showed that he just happened to fall in love with another man.
The movie was one of the weaker Marvel movies, but none of the problems it had would have been solved if it didn't include such a diverse cast.
P.S.: I know, English also doesn't make a lot of sense in 5000 BC, but as an audience we have already accepted that English is just the default language characters talk in if they don't have a reason to speak a specific different language. I can suspend my disbelief in that regard for the sake of not having to watch a movie in a made up language, but even that is sometimes immersion breaking when the language difference is a plot point.
I agree, the deaf part didn't make sense to me too. Wouldn't the healer of the group be able to fix that if she became deaf by accident?
This is the comment I'd really been looking for. This video seemed very pointed... I agree whole heartedly with everything that you said here. What made sense made sense and what didn't didn't. Gender/race swapping didn't take away anything from the story. What did leave you sitting woth questions was the deaf/speed character. Great actress just odd write in.
I think people are choosing to point these things out because they don't want to simply say eternal was a boring movie that lacked character development, compelling writing, and decent costuming... swap these actors for anyone else and we would all feel the same way. And honestly one of the most compelling scenes and interesting scenes that took tou out of the same old same old frame of mind was Phastos refusing to rejoin because of the love of his son and husband.

The different race and genders could be attributed on how each eternal serves a specific purpose and would then be useless outside of that purpose. Meaning that although all of them have powers only some are actually fit for combat. But you can never justify having a literal mute person on the team especially since she is a frontliner in where constant communication is key.

Im watching Spiderman, venom and doctor strange. Those go woke, im gone for good. Hopefully DC goes in the "joker" direction and I can get my fantasy fill from them. As for anything new from marvel, im already out and I know many others that feel the same way. Same goes for starwars. We love these things but there is only so much outside politics we can endure.

Agreed. It has been worst in Hawkeye when you see a 18 year old girl been kicked on the ribs. Full charge by a 300 pound fully trained bad guy and just stand up like nothing. I don’t know if that’s woke or just people disconnected with reality. Those can be the same thing but superhero films and action films have always done this. But it’s too unbelievable when little girls kick 300 pound men and they go flying without actual super strength. I get Captain Marvel taking hits and punching people. She has actual powers. In fact, the first 15 minutes of Shang-Chi was better than the entire Eternals film. Don't force this stuff on the audience. The box office for Eternals says it all. We just want to be entertained, not indoctrinated!

@@northshore1000 there is a reason for the plus. The LBGT+ are a very loose coalition of people, not one entity. Gayn lesbian and bisexual are kind of one category. Then queer. Then trans and non binary. Then intersex. Then asexual. All very different categories of sex related minorities. That's why I say LGBQTIA. It captures all distinct groups. It's a bit redundant to say LGB but that is where it started. With rights for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transvestites.
I get what you are saying. There will always be people who try to include demisexuals, gender fluid, etc... but notice how LGBQTIA has rarely been altered. Except in Canada where 2S is included for A Native American recognition of trans identity. Okay I guess? Just be open minded that there are often reasons for liberal assertions of inclusion. You know what's funny? They've proven at certain times they can do diversity in the right way. I really like what they're doing with Echo in Hawkeye. She's a Native American character with not one, but two disabilities - she's deaf and an amputee. But you know what? It fits the character and makes sense storyline wise. I mean it helps those are also the actresses limitations, but she pulls off the role nicely. That's how you do diversity.

We already saw what wokeness did with Star Wars and aside from very few shows, I avoid that franchise entirely. We’re seeing the same with Marvel in the comics and MCU and the trend in going downward there too. How much money can these corporations afford to lose before they realize their ships are sinking?
