This is a very good under rated pudding I remember well from my school days, if you can't find suet you can freeze shortening like Crisco and then shred it, works pretty well!
I have never had roly-poly. I know that my grandmother, who began cooking as a little girl in the 1890s loved to make them. This was a real treat to watch. Total winner, Keef!
Ah, a school dinner classic 👍👍 Hard to believe now, but 25p a day got you a two course dinner. Some fun stuff (kidney curry springs to mind) but other dishes that I'd never have got to try otherwise Always enjoyed jam roly poly, so thanks Mr Keef
Super! Would feature in rotation with all the other steamed puddings in Sunday Dinner (served at Noon and accompanied by family favourites on the Light Programme, unless Dad overrulled for Opera on the Third Programme).
Looks great Keef! I saw this and right away sent the link to my wife who’s excited for me to make it, so I’ll definitely rewatch in the process of making this. Thanks again Keef!
Also, I had your captions on today because my volume switch is broken on my phone. Anywho, the captions were a real treat! An extra dollop of Keefie goodness 😊
@@YYZed Bacon Roly Poly is as much a classic as the Jam one but I don't remember it being dished-up at school. The jammy version, yes, just like Keef says. My Mum made both at home.
@@itsmeintorrespain2714 good to know. Neither is prevalent here in the States, but they both sound excellent. I'm also not too familiar with baking with steam, although I know it's done sometimes.
You may find it easier to locate beef tallow (particularly in barbarcue country) Chilled in the freezer and fine grated into the flower would be a good substitute
Both for flavour. I made the recipe last night - I will increase the salt addition to a level teaspoon rather than a half-teaspoon for the next bake. Salted caramel & peanut butter/jam sandwiches are both examples of salt/sweet.
Americans can make custard with vanilla pudding mix, just use more liquid Hey Keef if you're in a dessert phase how about a seed cake? They're in the Hobbit. Which reminds me, I don't know if you're being funny on purpose when you do this (maybe that means it's sophisticated humor), but whenever you refer to one of these figures like Tolkien or Mr Heinz or the Colonel like they're your old schoolmates, that always tickles me, haha
Wow mrs Keith, love that jumper, please do more school dinners, what about cowboy pie, but it was sausage and bean pie, when I look it up can’t find it, also how about a whist pie? Xx
Cowboy pie: ua-cam.com/video/sPteFfpwaSg/v-deo.html Whist pie - never heard of it till now, which is odd considering it seems to be a Bolton/Chorley thing and I used to live near there...
Keef, that looks wonderful! My only exposure to Roly Poly Pudding was reading Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Samuel Whiskers or The Roly-Poly Pudding. Not a tale for the faint-hearted! Please tell Mrs KC that her jumper is amazing! Did she make it? I just love it, and she looks fantastic in it.

Or shredded frozen butter tossed in flour...
School dinner right there Keef! Thank the lord you didn't get all cheffy and faff about with it! 🙂

Give it a go Jeff, it's luvverly!
If I was going to get put in the elecric chair, I would choose Jam Roly Poly for my last meals desert.
Looks Incredible Keef, well played

Crikey I'd forgotten how cheap the school dinners used to be...the kids get rubbish these days ❤
Looks lush shall definitely be making that 👌 ....great
Good luck
mhh i love jam roly poly...i will try it. all the best from switzerland to lovely england
Every time I hear roly-poly pudding mentioned, I think of Beatrix Potter's "The Tale of Samuel Whiskers or The Roly-Poly Pudding".
Classic treat that I haven’t had in many years.❤️👍🏼

Love the Molly Weasley jumper on Mrs. KC !!

Yum.
Love some jam Roly poly lots of custard on top !!!mmmmm
I really LOVE your wife's sweater!!! Where can I get one like that? Please tell me!!!! It looks so beautiful warm and cozy!
Ah, she spent years making that.
So she DOES make them! I was just wondering that at the end of the video before I scrolled to the comments.
Suet is just heaven ❤
This will be my supper 🙌🏻
Oh yum! That looks so good! Cheers, Keef! 👍👍✌️
My absolute favourite pudding. 😁😁
We bake ours in a simple syrup which is delicious also!
Aww love to see you both. This looks lovely. I loved my school dinners.
We always had it steamed on the stove top when I was a child but here in South Africa they always bake it
Either is good
Okay, that looks absolutely delicious. Now I just need to figure out how to make it GF and con my mother into baking it since I really suck at baking.
Making this now with my jam mad 4 year old. Cheers Keef!
I love Jam Roly Poly buy that custard when it poured out of the jug! That was just the business.
New subscriber, great long egg vids
Welcome!

I like to have a bit o' fun with them...
Looks proper tasty with jam but I'll put Bacon and Onion in mine, and that mere thought is mouth-watering.
Dude I will try this but I’ll also put cheese in it
@@barrymcnicholl4140 That'll work.
It's always nice to meet someone else who thinks "how can I make this savory?"

I think it's hard to find!

Add 1/2 tsp of salt to the dough mix, and a few drops of vanilla essence/vanilla seeds (or almond essence if using raspberry jam).
Reasons?

Not a fan of Beer Trix. Yes Mrs KC made the jumper/dress. Took years, it did.
I can't get suet where I live but I bought something called tallow. It's beef fat. I'll be trying it tomorrow
Okay -it won't be quite the same - suet is quite hard and the pellets take some time to melt during cooking, leaving a spongy texture.
🙂
yumminess aside... is that akin to Ms. Weasley's famed jumper ? i'd have the recipe for that as well.
Oh! That looks absolutely delicious. Atora also make vegetable suet for vegetarians. (I know Keef you don’t do vegetarian).
I've treid veggie suet - I wouldn't recommend it, it's generally made from palm oil. You can shred frozen butter and toss it in flour if you want...
I mentioned vegetable Atora for folk who might prefer it. In our household it is the ‘proper’ suet for puds and dumplings every time.
Hi Keefie ❤ Could this be done in an air fryer quicker?
No, I don't think it would be quicker.
Nice one Keef. Bit of normality in a world gone mad.
Ooh yeah.
First.
Thanks for the recipe but the custard . . . Should be made with eggs!
You must have gone to a VERY posh school.
Wot! No! Bird's csustard powder every time. Egg custard is a whole other thing eaten like a dish in itself. Or in a tart.
Looks delicious but you can feel your arteries clogging up just watching the video
But isn't that the best kind of food? (In moderation, of course.)
