This song was written in honour of Canadian Armed Forces Capt. Nichola Goddard, who became the first female killed during the War in Afghanistan in 2006. The song takes its name from a stretch of Highway 401 in Ontario named 'The Highway of Heroes'. This is actually an official tribute memorial that honours all Canadians who have served during war, conflict and peace time since the War of 1812. It was originally started by a group of individuals, and it's now recognized officially by the government. There are now many other stretches of highway in Canada that have adopted this name and stature. In total, the Highway of Heroes Tree campaign is planting two million trees-one for every Canadian who has served in uniform since the War of 1812. Of these, 117,000 trees will be planted directly along the Highway of Heroes as a living memorial to each military member who died in service. Thank you so much Don for this reaction. I had the privilege of standing on an overpass in Toronto when one of the last soldiers was brought home from Afghanistan down the Highway of Heroes. There were police, firefighters and ordinary citizens lining the roads and bridges from Trenton to Toronto. Veterans who could barely walk standing beside their wheelchairs saluting the hearse. Farmers in the fields beside the highway were standing in the back of their trucks waving flags to honour the soldier.
I love the idea that Canada is planting trees for all that have served along with the fallen directly along the highway. I never knew about this, thanks for sharing Terry! Great song, had a folk traditional sound along with new Indie singing style. It’s a given that you would do something special for this day Don, and I had to check it out. Highway of hero’s is the stretch from 8 wing at CFB Trenton to the coroners office in down town Toronto. During the conflict in Afghanistan all our fallen troops were repatriated at Trenton and made the somber journey down the 401/ highway of hero’s to the morgue. This continues to be the route for those lost in peace keeping and training missions. Lest We Forget!
I know this song. It is a fitting song for Remembrance Day. I do believe that's what the Highway Of Heroes is alluding to in this song. We did have soldiers who fought in various wars, and were also in peacekeeping missions. My grandfather was a soldier in World War 1, in Eastern Europe, before he and his wife, and 3 of their children came to Canada, in the mid 1920s. I have uncles who fought in World War 2, and in the Korean War. Other relatives of mine did that too. Presently, I have relatives who are in the Royal Canadian Air Force. They are brothers. One of them is an astronaut. He is in Texas and in Florida for further training. When I see a person walking by in a military uniform, I thank them for their services. In the UK 11th November is also Remembrance Day, on the 11th of the 11th at 11am a two minutes Silence for all fallen Soldiers is observed....
