Yeah killing Aidan O’Mailey wasn’t really that good of a mission. If there was an option to let him go I would. Something would’ve told me he go his separate way. Plus Gerald arrested is even low than killing your brother. I mean Derrick asked you to kill Francis, that’s even worse.
Honestly Francis' attitude in the final mission is why I always choose to kill him instead of Derrick. Plus the delicious irony of "you might accidentally hit me/ I'll hit who I'm aiming at/ I'd better get ready to act surprised" is just... *chefs kiss*
when Niko said "I'll hit who I'm aiming at" I just thought, imagine telling someone to kill your brother, and when you say "don't miss, you might hit me" and get THAT response? fuck I'd call it off and pay a crackhead $20. he would'nt even argue
I do think that killing Francis is probably the option they wanted you to go with. While Derrick is certainly a bad person, he's portrayed in a sympathetic manner compared to Francis who's portrayed as a holier-than-thou hypocrite.
I always choose Francis. Derek isn't really a good guy either but there's an element of tragedy to his story that makes me feel sympathy towards him. He was once a well intentioned guy who wanted to do what he believed was the right thing, only for his life to spiral out of control and for him to end up a depressed, burned out addict. He doesn't really try to deny it either, he knows what he is. Francis on the other hand is a complete snake that's deluded himself into thinking he's a good person, while he's doing things like having his blackmailers killed and arranging the assassination of his own brother. He really can't be trusted and is ultimately a liability to Niko.
I think most players picked Derrick over Francis because in the GTA series corrupt cop are treated as evil and this is why people think Derek is the less evil. You’re playing the game from Niko’s perspective, and you see that he’s sympathetic towards Derrick and dislikes Francis. A long-time GTA player would see this as a no-choice at all. However I think in regards to corrupt cops in GTA, that Francis is the lesser evil as the other corrupt officials are far worse, and Francis has the power and money to have Niko killed but he doesn’t. It should be noted though that Derrick’s habit of being purposefully vague is also evident in the way he doesn’t even tell Niko why Francis wants to kill him. As for Francis’ ‘mistake’, I think he was bribed by Clarence and Goldberg discovered this. I ultimately feel somewhat remorseful for making either choice because I like the McRearys, but I was brought up to despise corruption and terrorism even more, so Derrick is my choice, and I don’t think we can truly jump to conclusions in regards to Francis’ future.
I’m so happy you did the trend too because your video is the best , most in depth ! I’ve watched 5 of them trying to pick and you helped me make my decision ! Thanks bro

You should do a video on the Playboy X vs Dwayne choice. It seems easy on paper but looking deeper into things such as character ages paints Dwayne in a far worse light (he effectively groomed Playboy into being a drug dealer when Playboy was a child)
Definitely a hard choice... Playthrough 1, I went with Derrick because of exactly what you said about him being the older brother... it resonated with me as an older sibling with having the obligation to protect my younger brother. Chose Francis on every other playthrough because I felt that he was more of the copout (no pun intended lol). It still felt that I've made the wrong one no matter what, unlike the other player determined kills that seem to have an obvious choice depending on your moral compass. Realizing now that as I'm watching your video, I honestly which you could actually eliminate them both... both have irredeemable qualities that wouldn't make me miss either one.
@@KevnFrench They definitely both deserve to die for all the crap they’ve done. I love your analysis on Derrick and Francis, but in my play through I always killed Derrick because I wasn’t really a big fan of Derrick’s character, not to mentioned he betrayed everyone he ever knew and snitched on his own brothers just to save himself, not to mention he helped a terrorist into the country, Francis pays you and even helps get rid of your wanted level after you kill Derrick he may not be honest about how corrupt he is, but we all know he don’t like Rats which is respectable sense all he cares about is his reputation
Damn, my ADHD must have been kicking my ass 😂 I had no idea this decision was meant to be questioning of your morals. I always shot Francis bc he was a dick and Derrick seemed like he was headed in that direction anyway lol
I find it funny that people find killing aiden upsetting whereas they completely forgot about Goldberg. I mean the game literally guilt trips you before you kill him by telling us he wants to make the world a better place and that he helps kids.
I believe I talked briefly about Goldberg in this video (if I didn’t, I know I mentioned it in my other video talking more broadly about GTA 4), but apparently if you do some digging on him, he’s a bit “friendly” with children, so… Francis has a point by getting rid of him haha
I had a very simple way of deciding which of the two to kill. If you spare Francis, you can call him to reduce your wanted level. However, if you date LawChick (KiKi), you get the same ability anyway. Do you might as well just kill Francis He always annoyed me how he felt he was holier than thou just because he was a police officer, and letting him live doesn't really offer any benefits.
I’m back as always,I think killing either is good,u can’t use the wanted level thing with Francis in a mission and thr money are useless because u can’t buy anything in that game, while killing Derrick could be canon I still pick killing Francis cuz packie was more happy
Tbh first time playthrough is happening rn, but i already knew that you had this choice, im choosing to kill derrick because of the fact he is confirmed dead from packies lines from the paleto score in gta5, and as there is no mention of Francis, it is my headcannon that niko killed derrick for Francis
Here’s an interesting variable that helps me make my choice: The McCrearys’ mother. If we kill Francis (who she thinks is the one good son she has that has made a good living as a commissioner and probably helps her pay for her bills and food) then she will probably be heartbroken and have less stability in her old age. This is made even worse when Gerald goes to prison, Packie leaves LC, Derrick is out in the middle of nowhere getting high, and Kate is dead. Mrs. McCreary has none of her children left and no one to look after her. In the best case scenario for her, Francis and Kate are alive to look after her. However, most people choose Revenge, which kills Kate. Losing Kate (her only daughter, pure and a role model of a woman) after her (not so) respectful and admirable police chief son would destroy her. I know this isn’t a factor most people take into account, but it helps me form my decision because both Derrick and Francis are so despicable. Derrick is a dead man walking, so, despite how corrupt Francis is, for the sake of Mrs. McCreary, she should have a son to look after her. Also, both Derrick and Francis have us kill people. We kill the people who Derrick snitched on, which is bad, but to be fair they were literally IRA terrorists (the guys associated with car bombing civilians in Ireland). Francis has us kill criminals and drug dealers (morally gray) but also innocent people like a journalist and a lawyer. If you’re playing the game with a mindset that you should only kill people who are criminals or “fair game”, then that’s off limits. Killing those innocent people is enough to make you choose Francis. Even though I usually kill Derrick, I can’t help but be bothered by the feeling of being used. Like Francis “won”in the end. He used Niko as a weapon, cleared all of his enemies who would dare expose his corruption, including his own brother, and he has that shit-eating grin after all is said and done. But to be fair, even though he threatened to have Niko arrested, he paid him for his work and never had him arrested (although he probably knows that if he did, Niko would almost certainly kill him).
@@donqon I like how you took their mother into account here, I don’t think a lot of people have her in mind when they make this choice. The only correction on I’ll make is that Packie sticks around until she passes. I can’t recall if there’s any concrete proof that he only leaves for Los Santos after she dies, but I do remember the phone call he makes to Niko following Kate’s death in which he tells him that he has to look after their mom since she doesn’t have much left, so I can’t imagine he’d abandon her while she’s still alive
@@DougTheDog6 That’s true. I guess seeing Packie in the end credits leaving always struck me as him leaving on a whim right after the main story because he just can’t deal with everything going on anymore (and he is still wearing the same outfit). So he might actually take after their mother until she’s gone as she already seems very old. I feel as though if Kate is dead, it would be the least to do to have Francis around for her, especially since Derrick dies anyway in the next five years. But, then there’s the question of what Francis will be like as a police commissioner, and without having his mom left to convince himself he’s a good person. The long-term effects of Francis being alive might be worse. Since Derrick dies anyway, it might be the best case to kill Francis and let Derrick wither away. Damn, I’ve always been more leaning on killing Derrick, but I might have just convinced myself that Francis should die.
@@donqon Bro this is exactly what I mean when I say it’s so 50/50 haha. One day you think you’re confident in who you would pick, but the next day you start thinking about it again and convince yourself to pick the other. It’s such a great dilemma
Anyone with half a brain will kill Francis for the plain and simple fact he’s trying to assassinate one of his own flesh and blood. That is pure evil. How can anyone look past this point. It’s a cold cruel world we live in. I’d die for my brothers and we hardly ever see eye to eye. But I still love the fuckers!
I agree that it's pure evil to have your own family killed, but don't forget that Derrick asks us to do the same. Yes, his request comes from a more retaliatory perspective as he fears Francis may be trying to kill him, but if that's the case, he could've just not attended the meeting. *And*, even if we take his request out of the picture, he's proven with his actions that he doesn't care for his own brothers as it can be pieced together that *he* is the reason why Gerald got arrested. This stuff is why I think it's such a difficult moral choice to decide on which brother to kill, because in the bigger picture, it's not just a black and white case of 'Francis asked us to kill Derrick so we should kill Francis.' The choice is much, much grayer than that
I wish I got into games like this 😭 I remember I just killed Derrick and didn't really think abt it cause I thought Francis was more entertaining so I liked him more
This was definitely one of the most complicated decisions in the game. It all boils down to who you think is the lesser of two evils. For me, I chose to kill Francis. Mainly because, with his position and power, he's much more of a threat to Liberty City. Yeah, Derrick is a snitch and him having us kill Aidan O'Malley was a bit much, but he at least seems to have some standards for himself. He tried hardest not to harm any innocent civilians during the bank robbery mission. Francis meanwhile, will have any killed regardless who they are if it means to save his career. Once he becomes commissioner, who's to say who wouldn't turn his back on Niko by hiring another criminal to get rid of him? I know people bring up the McReary mother, but its likely that, after Francis/Derrick's death, Gerry's imprisonment and Kate either dying or leaving LC (people forget that in the Deal ending she leaves LC and dumps Niko because she couldn't be around the crime anymore) that the mother would pass away from heartbreak and Packie would leave LC for Los Santos as a result. If we spare Francis and the mother passes away from that, then what? It would only give Francis more power to do whatever he wants as a corrupt cop and possible do more damage. Whereas Derrick is gonna die anyway, but give the circumstances, he at least deserves a more peaceful death rather than one where he's fearing for his life at the hands of his own brother. I don't care for Francis's perks. You can date Kiki to remove wanted levels and, at that point in the game, you already have more money than you need from the bank robbery mission. Again, do you what you feel is right. But for me, Francis deserves the bullet more than Derrick.
I chose to kill Francis. Because I agree, we are playing this from Niko‘s perspective. We follow what he feels and his response tells us whether we made the right decision or not. You can see on his face he never liked or trusted Francis. He could never respect him and show respect and trust the people who are upfront about who they are and what they do and they don’t try to put on a façade like Dwayne, Jon Gravelli, Phil Bell, Packie, and Gerry. So that does align with the fact that he has sympathy and empathy for Derrick he can see that Derrick is struggling with his addiction. And so he doesn’t judge him. But for Francis people or more so people don’t remember from GTA San Andreas Officer Tenpenny blackmailed CJ into doing his dirty work and he was gonna kill him so that is exactly what Francis would do because he’s in a position of power where he can have Niko killed to protect himself. But what Francis doesn’t know is that Niko has a contact that can get him out. When he kills, Derek tells us with his words that we made the wrong decision. He also told Francis on the phone that his brothers own up to who they are and what they do and which proves the story about Francis was all the way right and why and how They always judge Francis and they never really accepted him when he became a cop because they knew he was down. He wasn’t fooling anybody so. Again, in order to make him do it that is proof that he hast to die, but that is one of the things that players don’t look at when they hear name and the word snitch in the same sentence they say they have to go
You know what's so funny about this you know I felt like Francis is a scumbag who threatens Niko with dirt but I also felt like Derrick had us killed innocent men but I always choose to pop Francis
I always wacked Derrick because Francis could get the wanted level removed, and if I remember right there was a girlfriend that could do the same thing but she was a pain in ass to date. Just from a Utilitarian perspective Francis has just his uses while Derrick does not. In my play throughs that I did wack Francis, I went through the effort of only dating that chick with the Wanted Level ability because I enjoyed rampaging through the streets and when things got too hairy calling up the gf to watch the FIB and Noose watch me walk away scott free
Thanks for the video, my choice was still on the side of killing Francis. As many have pointed out, Niko, I didn't like him at all, this lying in Bellic's eyes that he is a holy man, it was a trigger for me, a slug. Derrek can't be called a positive character at all, he is a snitch, in some ways a weak person who found himself in drugs, but what is also a trigger in my opinion is that, after all, his family loved him, when Francis was killed, no one except mother, had no sympathy. Plus, if you've been in a friendly relationship with Pucky for a long time, you can understand that Derek was with his demons, but Francis is purely a man without principles, he even wanted to steal money as a priest.
I've played the game twice and I always chose Francis to kill. He seems to be way worse than Derrick. His deluded attitude, the way he treats Niko, and honestly the entirety of how he handled even approaching Niko to kill Derrick. Not to mention he's a dirty cop and I do not think it would be good for him to become commissioner. Niko is always portrayed as disliking Francis, he actually seems to be one of people Niko hates the most in this game. Meanwhile Derrick is also an ass, but I feel there is also something sad and tragic about his character. Maybe he was a less ass guy at one time, but now he's a pathetic man who is hopelessly addicted to drugs. Niko seems to like him a lot more and is way more sympathetic to Derrick. Overall, I just feel like Niko chosing to kill Derrick over Francis doesn't make sense from a character perspective. Thus, I feel it makes the most sense to kill Francis. As stated in GTA V convo with Packie, Derrick is canonically dead by that game. However, it's not specified how. It could be Niko killed him (which I'm hesitant to say, as it feels out of character to me) or that his drug and alcohol problems finally killed him. Or maybe even a third thing. Who knows?
Man great video I have played gta 4 6 times or more And i never put toghter that derrick ratted on gerry I always spare derrick but low key i think he should be taken out because he could easily rat out nikko for a fix I was an addict so i sympathize but i also know more than most what u would do for a fix I like to think i steered clear of some worse things myself But derrick ratted on friends and family for a fix

I mean Francis had us kill good people too. Remember Goldberg?
@@arthurfesovets Thanks for the comment! I always appreciate everybody else’s insight, especially when it comes to decisions like these
To be honest with you even though I like Derek a lot more I wish it was a RPG to let us kill one bird with one stone if you know you know 😭
That phone ability is so garbage😂
To be honest with you I would have had Francis put away😂
most of the time I chose Francis can't stand a corrupt cop and a fake Christian or fallen
Who knows?

Man great video
I have played gta 4 6 times or more
And i never put toghter that derrick ratted on gerry
I always spare derrick but low key i think he should be taken out because he could easily rat out nikko for a fix
I was an addict so i sympathize but i also know more than most what u would do for a fix
I like to think i steered clear of some worse things myself
But derrick ratted on friends and family for a fix
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and congratulations on overcoming your addiction brother!
