I'm thinking of buying one of these as my first car. There's one for a good deal right now and it seems to be in very good shape from the pictures (we are going to look at it tomorrow). The person claims that he's had it for 3 years and all the repairs he's ever had to do were at the beginning and it was the water pump, radiator, and battery (it has only 130 000 km). I'm just wondering if these are good reliable cars for a first car to have.
I have one, and its great so far. if you have one thats automatic, make sure you do a trans flush before 100k miles (180km) otherwise u will have sticking in 3rd gear
I wouldn't buy a first gen Sportage as first car. While they're pretty easy to work on, they are built with very cheap parts. To make matters worse, they have a very low fault tolerance. If something breaks on the car and you don't repair it quickly it will cause more things to break. You're much better off with an early 90's Honda Accord. They can take overheating much better than a Sportage and they're plentiful.
Frames rot away easily. I know I have one. I wouldn't ever advise one of the first gen ones. Get the newer one after 2006 when Hyundai bought out the company. Much better then the partnership ones with Mazda plus newer ones get better economy. This thing barely does 18mpg
shay pain I agree, I love this car; because once the weak parts are weeded out, they're tough little cookies. But for that reason, it makes them a poor choice for a first car.
I greet you cordially my friend Willian Andersson can you please write the part where you say what the electrical problem was, to be able to translate it, I only understand little English, does it have to do with two sensors and the radio fuse?
Great Videos. So I have a 2000 Kia Sportage but there is not a O2 sensor fuse. I am having the same issue. Can you explain how you bypassed the fuse? I'm confused lol and have been trying to figure these O2 sensors out for ever

When you say ( make sure you do a trans flush before 100k miles ) you mean a change of 4x4 transfer oil, transmission or differential oil?
