Stage two [PCV] install: 3:44
These beautifully machined pieces of billet aluminum are crucial in any direct injected car. They work to collect oil and moisture passing through your vacuum system and to prevent it from entering back into your intake where it would collect on the back of the intake valves and gunk up the inside of your engine, causing carbon build-up. The Boomba Racing Catch Can is meant to be easy to install, and easy to service. With a mounting bracket that makes it quick and easy to remove, draining this catch can is super convenient. This catch can utilizes a two stage outlet to ensure that the oil within the vapor going through the can is trapped.

Great installation video. Might I suggest that you reverse the order? Or at least explain that if you are doing both at once, you may want to start with the stage 2, since you have to remove all the hardware holding the stage 1 unit in place to do stage 2. Great work!
Just added stage 1 to stage 2 today. Very easy, worth while mod. The blue anodized finish is flawless and looks great under the hood!
Thanks for the kind words, Scott! Glad to hear you are loving it.
Why would you cut the PCV line? Why not just remove it, retain the factory hose, and use the supplied hose to run straight from the block to the can inlet? I don't see the point in cutting the hose and using a male>male adapter to add another length of hose, then reattach it. All you need to do is swap the clamps around.
Does it matter which hoes goes to the in and out on the catch can? The video shows it one way and in the pdf it looks like they are switched.
Hi, the hose going from the intake manifold should go to the "Out" port and the hose from the engine block should go to the "In" port. Sorry for the confusion!
So what's the benefit to doing stage 2 over stage 1?
Are you supposed to do both catch cans for stage two? In that case, what's better about that versus just doing stage 1?
Stage 1 works on the CCV system, where stage 2 works on the PCV. The main difference is that the PCV is a high pressure system, and tends to catch more contaminants. If someone only wants one can, we always recommend stage 2.
Where do you mount the stage 2 if you have a processwest verticooler ?
Are stage 1 and 2 different parts? I can only find the "universal" kit on various vendor sites. Same length hoses included for either installation?
Hi! Stage 1 and Stage 2 15+ WRX Kits are different parts. The hose lengths are varied as the placement is different within the engine bay and our Stage 2 requires hose clamps to work as it is the higher pressure side of the intake. We do ship internationally and would be happy to get a kit out to you if you bought the kit at BoombaRacing.com!
Can I run 2 oil catch cans with just stage 1+?
Hello boomba! I installed on a 2017 wrx about 2 months and haven't had any oil Build up ( live in cali, stage 1 setup) I've read it's normal on some cars but want to make sure if there are any testing I can run. she runs fine with no issues as well to add! Thank you
Hey there Angel! You must live in a warm dry climate, in that case it is normal to not see much build up. To increase your chances of catching build up, we recommend going with the stage 2
Thank you for the confirmation! I will look into purchasing the stage 2, for stage 2, is it needed to removed the entire can for draining?
You may have to loosen the collar and lift it up to get to the drain valve, but it is pretty simple!
What was the ID size on the hoses that slip onto the stock pipe please
if you're referring to the ones at 2:33, those are 5/8"
@@BoombaRacing thanks
How will this behave in our Chicago winters? Any worry about the lines freezing from the condensation that forms?
We're in Illinois as well and make catch cans for various vehicles; we've never had issues with condensation or lines freezing. Engine temps get more than warm enough to prevent any issues.
Does my wrx have to be a stage 1 to use the catch can or can I use it on my bone stock engine ?
You can use the catch cans on a totally stock WRX!
BoombaRacingInc awesome I'll be sure to pick one up soon thanks guys
Sounds great! Let us know if you have any other questions!
Damn I ordered the stage 2 but forgot about my verticooler. I dont know where to mount it now.
Metal Head 323 where did you end up mounting it? I’m having the same issue
Any idea which catches more oil? I heard the PCV side catches more. Just debating if I should do a stage 1 or 2.
If you are looking to only install one can, the stage 2 would be the one to purchase!
So, since we are fixing a known carbon buildup issue, and we are still keeping smog systems hooked up, just with a part in between, does this mod void warranty in any way? I have a 7/70 bumper to bumper extended warranty and don't want to void it......
When it comes to warranty; in short, innocent until proven guilty. Certain dealers can be more picky than others when it comes to aftermarket parts. Some dealers are fine with mods whereas other dealers will not accept any mods. This item doesn't alter the way the car runs so it really shouldn't be an issue. We always tell the customer to ask the service advisor first for what’s acceptable at any given dealership and if you have any doubts to return the car to stock form before bringing it in to a dealer. Furthermore there is a law called the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act that states in order for a dealer to deny warranty work on your car, they have to prove the aftermarket part you have installed caused your issue. For example if your window stops working and you have a cold air intake, the dealer is not going to void your warranty. It is illegal for a dealer to void your warranty for simply having aftermarket parts installed. If you have any further questions, please let us know!
Do I need to install both stage 1 and 2?
No sir! However if you only wish to do one can, we recommend stage 2 first!
@@BoombaRacing Why not call that "Stage 1" if that's the recommended first step?
Can you do a install on a STI 2015,different engine different install?
At this time we do not offer any direct fit catch cans for the current generation STI.
About where are you cutting the hose the second time? Are you essentially just cutting a chunk out of that hose?
All of the specifics about how the hoses can be found in the following installation guides:Stage 1: www.boombaracing.com/content/WRX%2015%20Catch%20can%20S1.pdf
Stage 2: www.boombaracing.com/content/WRX%2015%20Catch%20can%20S2.pdf
Hi boomba racing. is this compatible to my 2015 forester xt? I would like to try both stage 1 and 2 systems. where can i purchase it and how much? thank you.
Hey there! We have never tested for fitment on a Forester XT using our WRX Catch Can system. If the vacuum system is similar, I see no reason why this wouldn't work.
BoombaRacingInc Can you confirm if they have similar vacuum system and hose specs? thanks.
We have not tested one locally so unfortunately I do not have that confirmation for you.
Is this the same process for 2012 STI? and do I follow stage 1 or 2 for stock?
and would I need 9mm or 15mm hose?
We don't have any install guides available for the 2012 STI.
Will the stage 2 have fitment issues with an aftermarket tmic?
It will depend on the size and mounting style of the aftermarket TMIC.
If I'm tuned do I have to get re tune for this?
Not at all. Plug and play!
Boomba Racing im going to order one of these my question is which one should I get first stage 1 or 2?
We recommend stage 2 as it runs off a higher pressure, meaning it will catch more.
Are both stages required even with EGR deletes?
The stage 2 will catch more because it works on the high pressure PCV side which is known to have more contaminants; but for anyone looking for the absolute most protection, you can't go wrong with running both stages.
Great Video, Very helpful!
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Are you making one for the 2016+ civic catch can?
Yes we will be looking ino making a catch can for that car!
Goofy question but do you think that catch cans do a better or worse job than a AOS like IAG street, and why ? I am torn between your catch cans and a IAG AOS. Please enlighten me help me out. I'm stuck. Thank You
While we can not speak for any particular brand of AOS, we prefer catch cans to AOS. Our catch can will do a much better job at trapping the particulates rather than the way an AOS just separates them. Direct injection vehicles tend to get a lot of build up on the valves, and running a catch can prevents those particles from building up on your valves.
can u make one for 02 wrx please??
With enough interest we can look into doing this in the future!
Will this procedure work for 15' fxt as well?
We have not confirmed fitment of this on a FXT yet, however chances are the installation will be very similar.
BoombaRacingInc are you guys going to be testing soon?
Shoot us a few pictures of your engine bay to either info@boombaracing.com or directly to our Facebook page and we can have a look and show our engineers.
So Stage 2 is more effective and in the same system as an AOS right? PCV side? Do you need a protune for stage 2 catch cans? Thank you. Looks way easier to install then an AOS. I also live in SoCal and read your comment about not much build up in warm/dry climates. Great to know, thank you!
Why you have to install 2 of them
+Cruz Ortiz Most vehicles have two different types of vacuum systems; a high pressure side and a low pressure side. We sell two different types of catch cans for this vehicle so that you can have one for the high pressure side, and one for the low pressure side. Running two cans will work towards keeping your engine running efficiently and clean.
+BoombaRacingInc If this is so effective at keeping the car running cleaner/better longer, why doesn't subaru sell them with a catch made in house? Honestly baffles me. also, I hope to get a 2015 or 16 by the end of this year BUT already have a 2015 impreza. would it be beneficial to do similar work on the impreza for longevity?
dave091790 the largest reason would be consumers. Regular consumers have a hard enough time remembering to change their oil. If Subaru was to implement a catch can, that would just be one more item that a consumer would have to service/empty. Another reason why these cars don't come with catch cans from the factory is consumerism. Everything is built these days with the intentions of being thrown out in a few years. You won't notice any issues with your car during the initial powertrain warranty by not installing a catch can. It is typically once you're outside of warranty that the oil and carbon on your valves begin giving you issues. Any direct injected car can benefit greatly from a catch can.
BoombaRacingInc so is the installation the same for imprezas? And is there a difference in using just one or both at the same time?
dave091790 Stage 1 works on the CCV [low pressure] side of your vehicle, while stage 2 works on the PCV [high pressure] side of your vehicle. You can use one can or you can even use both cans for the ultimate protection. More contaminants will be caught using the stage 2 set up. As far as fitment on an Impreza goes, that is something we have not confirmed so we have no way of knowing if that will or will not work on your vehicle.
do you have an installation for 2017 sti?
We do not since we never made a specific kit for that vehicle.
Boomba Racing ok thank you
Will these fit on the SJ XT as well?
We were never able to confirm that.
I added a stage 1 to my 2018 FXT, pretty much the same except those connectors do NOT slide on that easy, I used a heat gun to practically melted them to make them pliable enough to slip on. BUT, it is installed doing its job.
