REALLY good list, top to bottom, man! Nocturnal Animals is utterly awesome, Tom Ford's second film after A Single Man, just beautifully shot and framed. I saw Blow Out REALLY early on, always like DePalma, my late wife and I saw it at the theater and really liked it. Again, ALL of these were so very good picks, of pics. ;-)
Frank Miller was not involved with Watchmen in any way. That was written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons. Frank Miller did do the Dark Knight graphic novels which were the partial basis for Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Much of the Daredevil Netflix series was also based on Miller’s Daredevil run.
Brick🙌 One of the first movies that got me into indie cinema back in the day (back when Focus Features was basically A24), and still in my personal top 20 favorite movies ever.
It's excellent, I'm old so therefore I'm a big fan of movies from the 30's and 40's so what I really love about Brick is the dialog, I can understand where a lot of people would be confused by it but as soon as I started watching it I understood that whoever had written the movie incorporated that classic dialog from back in those days into it, to me that's what really puts it over the top and anyone younger who liked it I recommend you start watching those old movies starting with EVERYTHING that Bogart was un from 1930 to 1950, also I highly recommend The Public Enemy, it's the movie that put James Cagney on the map and rightfully so. Those movies and the actors and actresses that were in them had a charm that you hardly see in today's movies, one exception to that is Jennifer Jason Lee in The Hudsucker Proxy, she absolutely nails the accent that people talked with back then and she masters the dialog as if she lived back then, undoubtedly it's her most underrated performance.
Watched Brick as a screener before it was even released and had such high hopes for it. I thought it was pretty boring and overall not very good. Never understood the high praise for it but to each their own.
Just for the record concerning Manhunter... The name of the Thomas Harris's book, from which this movie took its story, was "Red Dragon". When this movie was made it was going to be called Red Dragon but the people at De Laurentis productions were afraid that it would get confused with the Bruce Lee Kung Fu movies, popular at the time, so "Manhunter". The remake with Anthony Hopkins was an opportunity to enhance on the back story and more simply an opportunity to make more money off of the original story and use the original name of "Red Dragon". I won't debate which film is better or worse. I just appreciate each for their story telling. I do like the added information in the remake which was left out of the original and believe both actors nailed the mania and turmoil in the "Tooth Fairy" character.
Spy Game is an outstanding movie. If you've watched it once you haven't really watched it at all as there are so many callback layers within the movie. Highly recommend multiple viewings for folks reading this. Also watch Three Days of the Condor and you'll get a real connection vibe between what Redford was doing in Condor and Pitt in Spy Game. The scriptwriter of Spy Game, who fwiw has written some additional novels around the characters, says this was a conscious choice by Pitt. As you can tell, I really can't recommend this any more than I am. Brilliant movie.
Totally agree with the #1 choice - "Manhunter" is an all-time classic! William L. Peterson (from the CSI crime lab TV series) is fantastic in this 1986 movie that was made right after another of his best movie work in "To Live and Die in L.A." from 1985. Both are excellent movies!!!
Nocturnal Animals is in my top 10 all time ever favourite movies. Wish Tom Ford would ditch the frocks & make more movies. This is absolutely brilliant 🎉🎉
I am so happy you include Southland Tales from time to time. It's one of my all-time favorite movies, and I love how strange it is. But Manhunter is a masterpiece. So much better than all the newer ones, especially if they leave on the last 5 minutes that is frequently cut off for some strange reason. Great recommendations. Thanks
13 Lives. Did you actually say Taiwanese Caves? This happened in Thailand not Taiwan. It was not fram from my Wives village, she showed me the area as we drove by once. And once when we were at the Chiang Rai airport while I was in the bathroom she said I missed the boys coming of a plane, apparently coming back from some speaking engagement.
The big thing about the original Getaway wasn't so much of Steve McQueen (although he was in it and wife Ali McGraw just like Baldwin and then wife Bassinger in the remake) but of director Sam Peckinpah. Arguably the father of violence in cinema, with The Wild Bunch, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, and Straw Dogs which includes a rather graphic scene of rape for 1971.
CHOPPER, His real name is “Mark Reid” also known as “Mark Chopper Reid” also “Chop Chop” A great job by “Eric Bana” who spent many days hanging out with Chopper to get a true sense of his character
As someone who's met Mark Read (Chopper) I can tell you this is one of the best depictions of the man put to video. He was charismatic man despite a propensity for violence and had a very visceral presence in real life. Eric Bana emulated this role incredibly well.
Chopper is excellent, every interview and old footage of Mark Reid I've ever seen shows that Bana absolutely nails all his mannerisms and even his voice, it's amazing. Personally I'm not really convinced anyone can act that good and I suspect that way down inside Eric Bana got a touch of psychopath in him.
@@jimthar17 I think it's getting ready to leave Tubi but like a lot of good movies they get when they leave if you just give it a month or two they usually come back on it, most likely they have a contract and once it's expired depending on how many views and how many thumbs up's a movie gets is why they'll pay to get it back. There's also an excellent documentary on Mark Read that's on Tubi called Fatbelly: Chopper...unchopped. You’re absolutely right about Manhunter. It’s actually a better film than silence of the lambs in terms of tone, aesthetic and storytelling. Cox also makes a better Hannibal Lecter. Doesn’t chew the scenery like Hopkins.
I love that you grew your beard as the video went on 😅 reminds me of the edit you once did on another feature a few years ago where your face slowly got wounded like you were throwing punches in a brawl.
When I compare MANHUNTER to 2002's RED DRAGON, I sound so unkind to Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton and villain Ralph Fiennes. I call them watered-down milquetoast versions of the MANHUNTER characters. Because they are. William Petersen is totally hardcore compared to weakling Edward Norton - in-person and on-screen. One is a powerful persona, the other is not. Ralph Fiennes can't hold a candle next to Tom Noonen as the serial killer. And Anthony Hopkins - just a couple of years from doing HANNIBAL - is heftier (fatter), more out of shape and aged not-too-well yet is hair-dyed to pretend to be a much younger Hannibal. It does not work. RED DRAGON does feature a few more anecdotes from the book but the two climaxes has the uber-powered Iron Butterfly soundtrack in MANHUNTER, and almost a muzak version for RED DRAGON. Even in the tabloid reporter - so despicable and vile in MANHUNTER that we almost cheer for his flaming wheelchair demise, whereas in RED DRAGON, it's a CGI balloon animal version - "See, kids? This is a giraffe!" Uh huh... yeah... That said, I recommend seeing both. See what producers' selections in actors, scenes, dialog do when altered. These two films are good examples of that.
The Spirit is based on the comic strip by Will Eisner. If you like comics, you need to check out the source material: it's basically the foundation for just about everything which followed.
Does anyone know the name of the movie where a black man, who was just released from prison, goes on a rampage? He wears a Santa Claus hat. And it's a UK movie. Darren did a review on it a few years ago. Thanks.
Couple comments... The Getaway wasn't a remake of an older movie, it was a second adaptation of a novel by Jim Thompson (The Grifters, After Dark, My Sweet). If you've never read Jim Thompson, he's very gritty and very dark, and was one of the first of the neo-noir novelists to have the anti-hero as a protagonist. Also, I think the reason The Spirit was not received well was because the movie didn't hit the mark as far as the adaptation of the character from Will Eisner's comics... not because it was a bad movie.
Great FLICK CONNECTION Darren. I’ve always been a big fan of Manhunter, from its cinema release, so many thanks for sharing with us. See you soon Darren 👍👍👍
I'm generally not on to criticize DePalma for his riffs on classic movies. I really liked Dressed to Kill and loved Carrie. But Blow Out was so inferior to Antonioni's masterpiece Blow-Up that it made me angry. I just can't watch it again.
Thanks, Darren. I know you’ve recommended Nocturnal Animals before and I have to say that I have seen it three times, and it really is a classic. A highly under-rated film. Yes, it is disturbing in places, but it is so well constructed and acted (and photographed, for that matter)… it’s a movie I keep returning too. The casting is impeccable, especially Michael Shannon. (Still recommending Take Shelter to those who haven’t seen it. Subtle, eerie film.) So, thanks, again!
I saw Manhunter after reading the book Red Dragon. I think Michael Mann did an exceptional job adapting it to film. The ending is just a pinch different but is honestly to me better (same result either way). He even got little details like water falling on the floor at a crime scene because the drain had been removed for forensic examination.
Thirteen Lives! Yes sir. I've always had this movie in my queue and never watched it. I'm going home tonight to watch it. Thank you for the recommendation sir!
Spy Game is fabulous. Tony Scott has directed so many fantastic movies over the years and I was completely unaware of this one it slid under my radar as did The Company You Keep, another Robert Redford vehicle that was just phenomenal!!!;
Comment for the algorithm. I don't even have prime but i watch all your vids. Plus the fact that some of these are available on Tubi, imma start watching immediately. Thanks always DVD.🤙
Viewer warning for Hardcore Henry, if you get motion sickness easily, this could potentially be the worst movie you've ever seen as the shaky-cam and first person motion can give you nausea very quickly, leading to migraines or vomiting. It's a fun enough movie, but absolutely not worth the literal headache it could bring you.
Thief introduced me to Michael Man, Miami Vice helped solidify my like of his style, and Manhunter was the icing on the cake. I actually saw Manhunter in the theaters when it was released. During a week day, I was the only one in the theater until about 5 mins before the show started. There were fewer than 10 of us in the whole place. It was one of the best movie experiences I've had.
Hannibal the TV series came out right at the point that most people were bored of Hannibal Lector, and that reflected in the viewership being fairly low at the time: but don't overlook it, it's so well done, you'd do yourself a favour by giving the first episode a watch. If you end up then binging the whole series and end up red-eyed and in need of sunshine and healthy food - you know who to come back and complain to.
Always love that you recognise and include great Australian movies. Chopper Read was probably even more outrageous than he was depicted in the movie. When I was a law student in Tasmania, we went to his trial in the early 90’s as part of our sentencing subject. He was on full display playing to the audience and loved that the court was full of students. Certainly a character
Man Hunter is an adaption of the book "Red Dragon" . If you like to read It's way above and beyond the movie. By all means watch the movie first or the book will ruin the movie for you.
Agree most of these are all pretty good, but THE Spirit, I saw a little after it got out of theaters and it bored me that I fell asleep. So I wrote it off and have never thought about it since. Ill have to try it again as I liked the first Sin City, but I just remember being bored.
Never saw Eric Bana use his authentic Aussie accent. He's great in this. That whole criminal family were so heinous and beyond violent. Its a hard watch but worth it. Also, Michael Mann I salute you.
Eric Banner did a fantastic job, there's a video called 'A Weekend with Chopper Read and Eric Bana' they filmed before starting the movie, fantastic to see how well he did the role after meeting him.
Thirteen Lives was so great and inspirational. Didn't think it would be my type of flick, but was entertained the whole time and moved at the end. Another solid recommendation from a great channel.
I preferred Manhunter to the remake even though I thought that Red Dragon was a really good movie in its own way. As for Chopper, it you've not seen it, see it.
Thank you for highlighting Manhunter. I renter the vcr version after it as released. I now own the dvd and have it in my Amazon Prime library. There is a “Director’s cut which is even better than the theater release.
The Getaway - Not in Prime Hardcore Henry - Not in Prime Blow Out - Not in Prime The Spirit - Not in Prime NOCTURNAL ANIMALS - Prime rental Brick - Prime rental Chopper - Not in Prime Manhunter - not in Prime. Please change your video title. Waste of time...
This is a great list. Brick is brilliant. I thought The Spirit was hilarious, with a fantastic visual style -- terribly underrated. Disagree on Southland, the screenplay is a disaster.
Maybe I'll have to give The Getaway a 2nd look. Hated it when it was released. Blow Out was a re-make of the Italian flick Blow Up. I see it as Travolta's first 'real' adult movie.

All shaky camera 1000% Harcore Henry - Prime, Paramount+, FreeVee
Request - Could you please recommend Comedies and romantic movies. Movies that are more upbeat or at least have a happy ending.
Thirteen Lives was so great and inspirational. Didn't think it would be my type of flick, but was entertained the whole time and moved at the end. Another solid recommendation from a great channel.
I just watched Terrifier 2 last night so I don't think you could recommend anything that has more over the top gory death scenes.
I preferred Manhunter to the remake even though I thought that Red Dragon was a really good movie in its own way. As for Chopper, it you've not seen it, see it.
Not to be a stickler but Alan Moore wrote the Watchmen. Frank Miller did everything else you said and you're right he is an amazing writer!
Thank you for highlighting Manhunter. I renter the vcr version after it as released. I now own the dvd and have it in my Amazon Prime library. There is a “Director’s cut which is even better than the theater release.
Manhunter is awesome. Haven’t seen it in forever. Thanks for letting us know it’s on Prime!
Manhunter is great, soundtrack features some super creepy atmospheric Shriekback tunes.
Dude would've been really funny if you done the whole video without saying anything about the moustache
Great list, especially Chopper and Brick! ... but don't think we didn't notice that gold-top Les Paul!
Okay, I need more deets, maybe a video on this cheese grater incident involving your face 😛
I am so jealous of the products you advertise because we don't have them in South Africa
The Getaway - Not in Prime

Please change your video title. Waste of time...
I just watched Nocturnal Amimals (like literally just watched it) on Prime
Frank Miller wishes he wrote the Watchmen. Appreciate what you do so well.
Watched Manhunter for the first time today, thanks for the recommendation!
The music in manhunter is by Shriekback. At least some of it (the best stuff)
Initially, I didn't enjoy The Spirit. I appreciate it more now.
This is a great list. Brick is brilliant. I thought The Spirit was hilarious, with a fantastic visual style -- terribly underrated. Disagree on Southland, the screenplay is a disaster.
I agree with you on Southland, and still enjoyed it
Chopper is absolutely bonkers, so painful to watch and I could not stop
Speaking of growing on people. That beard grew back before the video was over 😂
Thriteen Lives is such a great flick. Everyone should see it.
Frank Miller didn't do Watchmen, that was Alan Moore.
Saw Spy Game in theaters. One of my fav Brad Pitt movies!
Do a top 10 anti Neo Nazi movies i.e American History X....😅
Maybe I'll have to give The Getaway a 2nd look. Hated it when it was released. Blow Out was a re-make of the Italian flick Blow Up. I see it as Travolta's first 'real' adult movie.
Thai(land), not Taiwan. I was there at the time. It remains a huge event in recent Thai history.
Anyone notice how his beard grows from the beginning to the end?
er at 10:10, yeah that cave is in Thailand not Taiwan.
Came to make the same comment.
Chopper and Bronson would be a great double feature!
Hardcore Henry is awesome! Love it. Total carnage at the end.
Frank Miller didn’t write or draw “Watchmen.”
13 lives the cave they were stuck in was in Thailand, not Taiwan.
I believe the Thirteen Lives incident happened in Thailand, not Taiwan.
13 Lives is set in Thailand--not Taiwan.
Bring back the mustache!
I was watching hardcore henry last night and marveing at how good it is
Rian Johnson has yet to make a better film than Brick.
About facial hair, now would be a good idea to cut it off fully
Damn, your beard really does grow fast! 👍
Frank Miller had nothing to do with Watchmen.
Dude, the Chopper scene when he's at the bar with the cop lol
Frank Miller did not do the Watchmen comic book.
