I wrecked with an Airmada 2 years ago at 88 mph. Slammed my head hard in the right side and slid about 100 yards according to the Sherrif dept. Long story short, I'm alive and the helmet only suffered some major scuffing.
grumpy342 You have to remember these tests are not real world application. The abrasion is great for sliding, you are unlikely to burn, and shrapnel is not a huge concern vs other helmets. The impact resistance is expected due to the shape, however that is more so a worry for highsiding. My airmada cracked on impact when I got hit by a truck at 55mph. I only suffered a minor concussion without any real bruising. My gloves, elbows, and boots ended up the worst.
Any helmet designed to be a high airflow helmet, you can go ahead and fail the noise reduction test, because they're designed to move more air, which in turn creates more noise.
You know, I don't consider this an overall failure to be honest, and I own an Airmada. Relative to the Shoei neotec it performed relatively well where it matters. The water test is kind of neither here nor there, if water is somehow hitting the exhaust vents on the back you shouldn't be out in that weather. The puncture testing went well, both the Shoei and this one failed side impact. This one passed rear impact and the shoei wasn't tested for it. The chinbar (although still cracked the melon) seemed to be in relatively good shape, especially relative to the chinbar on the shoei last week, the geometry of a melon is also not the same as a human head and a little give in the chinbar should be ok on the road. As far as pieces coming off goes; helmets are a one time use piece of gear, not worried about multiple impacts. I am concerned about the noise level and the top impact although I wish the sound test had been conducted on both. Considering what I've seen here, the airmada trumps the shoei. It'll be interesting to see the results on an expensive full face rather than a modular.
Hey Mike! Very valid points. I'm glad somebody took note of how we changed the testing method since the Neotec, because as you say, comparing the two test results isn't quite so clear cut. ~RF9
Hi Ryan, stellar response time! In a really interesting way I actually found this video reassuring. I recognize it was a "failure" but when compared with a much more expensive lid I actually feel better about it. Interesting how a $200 proper full face holds up that much better than a well-reviewed $850 modular when it comes to frontal impact eh? I've always heard it but didn't want to believe that modulars were that much less effective.
The puncture tests are similar to ones used in Standards testing in the UK, Ireland?, Australia and New Zealand. But you're ignoring the most important part. The transfer of energy as a result of impact (bowling ball - side impacts using the bat) mean that any transfer over 50g's is unclear and can either result in minor injuries or major injuries - depending on the G's of the impact. www.internationalbrain.org/examination-of-bi-thresholds-in-terms-of-the-severity-of-head-motion-and-the-brain-stresses/ You can run to your squid brand all you want, but a helmet is designed to obtain and disperse energy at least less than 50 G's. This helmet is a big fail.
Donald Trump (Verified) are you serious? Even in the link you provided 50-100 is just minor. Like a concussion. If that's what i get from a crash I'll be more than happy. I guess you're a shoei fanboy cause this one is on par and better than the shoei he tested and it hurt your feelings. If icon is a "squid brand" what do you call a "real biker" brand? And please don't feed me the line where you buy what they wear on GP cause that's a crock of shit. Get off your high horse. This helmet may be affordable for most and performs within standards that will allow you to go to the hospital without any real brain injury.
I really enjoy this channel, from the motovlogs, to the test rides, and especially the reviews/crash tests. Very clean presentation, right to the point, and a short and sweet outro. I look forward to seeing many more videos!
Awesome video like always but I have a few remarks/ideas if you dont mind :) 1) Top impact strength - I would make a tool that throws/guides the ball to the helmet. I think you will have a lot of difference between passed and not passed tests for similar strenghts of helmets. Although random data serves to purpose, it can still make some helmets look much much better than the others very similar to them. I am saying this simply because your G stickers either break or not so 1 or 0, and it can be 51 vs 49 g's of impact force that makes it pass or not.. Those kind of helmets should be the same passing grade.. Maybe make a range of those, like 30g 40g 50g and 60g. 2) Chin bar protection and the unlucky watermelon.. I am thinking that it would be fair to use the g stickers there as well, but fit each tester with sticker on 2-4 cm away from the chin. I would never buy a helmet that is too close to my chin, and also some materials will cave in because they are elastic on purpose. This is how they don't break and actually save your face by taking up extra force by caving in.. All in all your tests are great and getting even better with every single video, and I enjoy them sooo much! :D Now some of the ideas I have for you if I didn't already kill you with this comment.. :) Ideas: 1) Super mega giga thanks for the sound proofing test. Since this test does not mean that you will destroy the helmet, would it be possible to test like 50 of them and show us ? This means a lot to all of the buyers :) 2) Recycled equipment test ?? I have a helmet I would like to replace this year. Your videos are being huge influencers to my opinion. As a thank you, I would like to send you over my old helmet (some time when I get a new one, it may be even as late as this fall) and then you could test is as well. Then you could make more tests without extra cost of the equipment and also we dont have to wait for that specific model to come in with some sort of an error :) 3) Adding multipliers to the tests to mach your possible customers. So you can have a demanding cusomer which thinks everything is 100% important, but then you have newbees like me who are still exploring. I don't mind getting wet so much as I mind the safety with impact protection. I would say that waterproof test is about 60% important as well as the noise test, but side and top impact as well as the chin bar protection are 100% importan. Penetration would be around 90% for me as I think that it is very unlikely to get hit by a rock at those speeds but safety is 100% priority for me. So in terms of the above said, there is no too much of a difference between this helmet and Shoei from the last video, tho you didn't make the test for the sound proofing with Shoei. What do you think ? :) All the best, Milos
Thanks for testing this helmet! For the price, I believe it is a good helmet. And I hope to never need to test it's protective abilities. I've been wearing an Airmada Volare (hi-vis yellow & reflective silver) for 2 years and love it despite it's flaws. I ride from early in the season, at night, in poor weather, thru to late in the season. Being seen is critical when drivers aren't expecting a bike on the road. The Volare colour way does that very well! I have no interest in going back to a matte black helmet, as I'd rather stand out and avoid an accident then look stylish. I wish Icon hadn't discontinued all the Volare colour ways, as I will have to find a different brand with a long oval helmet that is as visible as the Airmada Volare.
Ive had my Airmada for a little over 4 years now. Its loud, it's heavy, its STYLISH, but most importantly its done a good job for keeping my head out of the elements. ive been down in the dirt once and slid backwards into a puddle. havent had an impact with it but all in all I'd give it a 6/10
I know this old but maybe you’ll see this? for testing abrasion the sanding belt gets clogged giving artificially higher scores. Try using the sanding belt while compressed air is being blown on it. If you’re sliding on pavement you’re constantly sliding on a “new” patch, which is different than your sander getting clogged up with the helmet shell fragments. Just a thought. Thanks for doing these tests. I love how scientific everything is at fortnine.
I'm loving the series! There's a Spanish company called MT beginning to make a name for themselves in the UK at least for cheap safety. 5* snell rating at £75 for the MT Revenge. Might be worth a look!
I had this helmet doodle edition.. rode with it for 50,xxxkm.. it was good. I never had any issues with water, just fog. Supposedly is a great air flowing helmet, sweat drying helmet but I always sweat in it.
Adding in the sound/'wind noise is very good. Maybe consider adding in some test that tests how the weight of the helmet effects neck strain, or whiplash.
Thanks for doing great test video! I've been riding my first Street bike H1 500 that may give you idea how long been on the road. Your having to much fun with the BAT!
Man.. your videos are gold standard. humor, all kind of crazy but relevant tests and a treat to watch. i wish you had a lot more of these. I saw the ICON stryker vest review video and decided to not buy it as a result. however, i am now looking at Joe ROcket Speedmaster 2.0 Back protector and was wondering if you had any plans to do a video on it. it is the same CE level approval rating (EN1621-2) as ICON stryker vest but going by your review that doesnt mean much it seems. :)
I live in the PNW and ride every day in a O’Neil motocross helmet to work. It rains nearly every day and I stay bone dry, and it has an open face with goggles! So when people say helmets like these may get wet, i like to think not.
How is it fair for example when you do your golf club test? The structural integrity of the helmet is already destroyed. I would argue that as well after your first base ball bat swing, the rest shouldn't count
i agree, another note, i feel like if u were wearing any helmet and someone hit you there with a golf club you would die regardless of the helmet, because your chin got hit so hard wouldnt it snap your neck, if u were hit by a car that was going that fast wouldnt u die regardless?
Old video I know. I'm going through watching them cause I love your videos. But I rife icon helmets. My last was the one you tested here. Convinced a buddy to get one too. We had 2020 models so not sure the difference but he was in a bad accident with it. 120mph into a curve. Low sided into a guard rail. Went over the top and down the I beam pillars for a few landing in the ditch on the other side. Bike went down fhe road a bit and over the rail on the other side into a tree. He made contact with the pillars with his helmet. One crack and abrasion on the chin guard an inch in front of the visor hinge and hit the back of the helmet hard enough to send the corner of one of the I beams through fhe helmet almost touching his skull. No bruises on the head and no unconsciousness. Went down the rail fast enough to slice through his leather jacket and his wrist to the bone and hard enough that q corner of an I beam went through the strap of his ogio Mach 3 backpack I gave him, through the leather jacket, and a thumb depth into his shoulder. We know cause thats how the doctor pulled the skin out to sew him up. Broken rib and split shoulder blade. He got up and walked away conscious so we never ride anything but icon from now on
Extremely rad. Love Icon. Had this exact helmet for 3 years now. For what I originally thought was a cheap budget helmet, I've come around to love the thing.
Hey Ryan, I just wanted to tell you and the whole team that you're doing an amazing job, keep it up ! I was wondering if you planned on testing the HJC RPHA 11 Pro helmet later on ?
slammed my head on a curb wearing this helmet, it twisted off my head from how hard the impact was and broke my nose in three places but i had 0 head trauma thanks to this helmet.
Also, I wore an airmada for the first three years of my moto life. It actually moves much more air than my new shoei gt air does. Though the aero dynamics are certainly inferior to the shoei helmet and it is also much louder.
Love the helmet test although the only time water comes in from the back is at stop lights in a down pour with cars passing. Id like to see a test on the airflite.
Niceone fella. Thanks for introducing the soundproofing. I think I'll give this lid a miss though, I guess you get what you pay for. Quite impressive that the visor still works on one side though.✊
I thought Brian is a real man when I first saw him on the last video! Scare me a lot.! But have to admit, your texts and reviews are pretty detailed and great! Appreciate your work !
I've worn the airmada daily for over a year, and I think it is a fantastic helmet for the price. That said, the chin bar issue does worry me. I have never had issues with rain seeping into the vents, but the seal of the shield against the gasket kinda sucks.
Please do the hjc IS-17. I know it has to be a defective product or whatever but this is a cheap helmet with good ratings. I'd be interested to see how it does. Plus it's the helmet I have :)
MotoFarang I crashed in mine an it worked great no cracks or anything only damage was a scuff and I had no concussion or headache great affordable helmet
Just got into motorcycling and loving these videos but dam, i bought this 2 months ago as my first helmet for my ninja... pretty scared to go for my first ride in spring after that chin bar fail.
Old video, but my debate still goes wild... I have owned an Airmada since 2014. I have loved it. I love the way it looks, love the way it feels, love the way the pads break in, etc. It was time for a new helmet after 4 years, so I bought an Airframe pro. Good upgrade, except it was stolen off my bike during a 1 minute piss break mid trip. So, back to the Airmada. I know this isn't the safest helmet, but I still love it, and it'll likely protect me more than enough. Do I buy another? Splurge on another airframe pro? I was considering an RF1200, but I'm not totally convinced, Icon Variant? Another Airmada? Scorpion EXO 420?... Decisions are hard. Ride a Speed Triple every day. Like the quiet, which my Airmada is no longer.
Thanks! We've got a more traditional review of it here (ua-cam.com/video/yPHPWUVtxq4/v-deo.html). As for crash testing the RPHA 11, yes, I am planning to film that eventually. Cheers! ~RyanF9
yes, Icon's helmets are famous for their comfort and reasonable price/value/protection ratio. we've just ordered this model for my wife, who rides with me as a passenger
One of two questions.. A, where are you getting your music from? It's catchy, and I don't know what it's called. All the electronic beats and stuff.. B, can you do a crash review on the Gmax gm 69?
My question is why do you get water through the back of the helemet I wore a icon airmada through rain and hail before multiple times for 2 years and I never got my head once. Also I had a minor accident in the helmet and it saved me(also I broke my visor quick connect I ordered a new one for 15$)
I'm considering buying a helmet (bike newbie here) but I need some help.. Can't decide between 4 helmets.. 1. Scorpion exo r420 2. Scorpion exo r710 3. Bell Qualifier DLX mips 4. Icon airmada Airflow is a must.. I it gets as high as 55c where i live.. Thanks in advance!
The stuff falling off isn't necessarily that bad, most street helmets are only good for the one big crash anyway and every bit of energy that's going into breaking those attachments is energy that's not going into breaking your head
I tested one it the bolt force when a car turned into me, slammed on my shoulder then head and remember thinking, that was nice like headbutting a pillow
My helmet costed 64 quid (about 75/80 dollars) and it works perfectly fine, its been through hell and still works, is watertight and does the job, so saying 200 dollars worth of helmet isnt cheap, rant over
my airmada saved my life... Car pulled out in front me while i was going about 50mph i hit the car went over the car slammed to the pavement and slid about 100ft and there was hardly any damage to the helmet
I wrecked with an Airmada 2 years ago at 88 mph. Slammed my head hard in the right side and slid about 100 yards according to the Sherrif dept. Long story short, I'm alive and the helmet only suffered some major scuffing.
J Bellamy Same here !
Thanks for the information . I trust ICON the helmets and gear are really good for the money
Did you go back in time?
@@GaysAreGroomers No, my fellow BTTF fan, I did not lol
Only Suffered some major scuffing? No mate, that lid was f**ked lol
Notice to all: Do not buy this helmet if you plan on riding backwards in rain! :D
I only ride backwards and in the rain
You say that as a joke, but riding backseat on a scooter in south East Asia is a thing. 😂
@@MaxwellAerialPhotography if its a problem then they can sit forwards 😂
I've lost all confidence in my helmet now.... thanks I guess?
grumpy342 you too? Well I guess we have cool graphics trophies.
Yeah, I have an airmada and i'm rethinking using it this year
BarrettCharlebois they don't do snell rating so, I guess I'll find another brand that does.
grumpy342 You have to remember these tests are not real world application.
Chris Bridgers the chin bar is what had me concerned. USA has slow impact crashes as well as other countries. Not all impact crashes are 100mph plus.
Not sure how scientific it is, but enjoying the new series!!!!
Us neither. But we're enjoying making these videos haha. ~RF9
FortNine love the nod two America
Yeah but sound cancellation doesn't matter because murica. How are you supposed to listen to the anthem if your helmet blocks all the noise!
when is there gonna be leather on the test? I'm really excited to see abrasion resistance on them. Keep up the good work
I'm prepping for a crash test of a leather jacket right now! Should be interesting.. ~RF9
Come to Ontario!
When I wrecked I was wearing my airmada salient and I have no head injury and am still alive

Niceone fella. Thanks for introducing the soundproofing. I think I'll give this lid a miss though, I guess you get what you pay for. Quite impressive that the visor still works on one side though.✊
Nice form on the Golf Swing
I thought Brian is a real man when I first saw him on the last video! Scare me a lot.! But have to admit, your texts and reviews are pretty detailed and great! Appreciate your work !
Well I guess it's time to start to look for a new helmet after this....thanks guys
I've worn the airmada daily for over a year, and I think it is a fantastic helmet for the price. That said, the chin bar issue does worry me. I have never had issues with rain seeping into the vents, but the seal of the shield against the gasket kinda sucks.
Hope do a Biltwell Gringo / Bell bullitt vs an old school helmet and see how the advance safety standards vs the old safety standard compared.
I love all of your videos and the new series! But I was wondering if you were going to test any Scorpion gear?
Yeah maybe! I'm hoping to get a pair of Scorpion riding jeans for sure. ~RyanF9
great review but would have liked a closer look at that chin bar, did it crack or bend in ?
I kinda think we need a higher than a 50g sticker on the head. IIRC
Just got into motorcycling and loving these videos but dam, i bought this 2 months ago as my first helmet for my ninja... pretty scared to go for my first ride in spring after that chin bar fail.
please make a review about spyder helmets. thanks! i really love your reviews! keep it up.
this fella really enjoys doing this....
you guys should test the air frame pro, would be interesting to see the difference.
great way to improvise a crash hahaha always good to watch
best motorbike reviews on youtube :D
loved the test. Also found it humours. Thanks.
Great testing as always.
Have you tested or planing to test the HJC RPHA-11 Pro?
Thanks! We've got a more traditional review of it here (ua-cam.com/video/yPHPWUVtxq4/v-deo.html). As for crash testing the RPHA 11, yes, I am planning to film that eventually. Cheers! ~RyanF9
Thank you, looking forward to your testing as i really like the helmet and need to see how it does in your test :)
I want that helmet pretty bad. it's ridiculously light! cheers
Hi there! love the new series. can you test the LAZER bayamo series and the others? I've always wondered how good LAZER helmets are.
best type of helmet review and i work at cycle gear
Would love to see an AGV K5 get tested!
Only problem in testing is after the first hit, the helmet would need to be replaced with a brand new one to show actual strength.
Could you test one of the inexpensive Snell approved helmets and see if it really holds up?
Bottom line: would you recommend using this kind of helmet for a beginner rider on a 300 or 400 sports bike?
yes, Icon's helmets are famous for their comfort and reasonable price/value/protection ratio. we've just ordered this model for my wife, who rides with me as a passenger
Do you have any plans to test a bell qualifier or qualifier dlx
Haha. Love your testing methods. I should send you all my old helmets to play with. ;)
Pretty cool tests!
Seriously, thank you for making my day better. :-)
One of two questions.. A, where are you getting your music from? It's catchy, and I don't know what it's called. All the electronic beats and stuff.. B, can you do a crash review on the Gmax gm 69?
test the Shark SKWAL. that's my current helmet and not really sure how I feel about the protection I get.
How often do you replace that sandpaper? Even sanding something soft will wear it down after one go.
lml im just thinking about the heat test, would it be better to use a heat test with out fire?
My question is why do you get water through the back of the helemet I wore a icon airmada through rain and hail before multiple times for 2 years and I never got my head once. Also I had a minor accident in the helmet and it saved me(also I broke my visor quick connect I ordered a new one for 15$)
What are your thoughts on the Schuberth SR1? Test one of those!
In all your crash tests, do you think the neck is going to survive ?
can you do a test on the BELL Qualifier , seems to be a highly recommended helmet but lets see how it stands the testing! thanks!
I'm considering buying a helmet (bike newbie here) but I need some help..
Can't decide between 4 helmets..
1. Scorpion exo r420
2. Scorpion exo r710
3. Bell Qualifier DLX mips
4. Icon airmada
Airflow is a must.. I it gets as high as 55c where i live..
Thanks in advance!
Could you please do one of the Icon Airframe Pro? I have the Airmada and my chin bar fears have been confirmed.
I would love to see how the airframe holds up.
The caveat to the water test is that water wouldn't generally spray up into the back of the head, so I think it should have gotten a pass there.
Just in time when Yammie asks if you should buy a 150$ or a 500$ lid :)
Test the icon variant next!
Great series. Keep it up!
I hope you are using some type of respirator or something when you are sanding and burning these things... the fumes released can be pretty nasty.
The stuff falling off isn't necessarily that bad, most street helmets are only good for the one big crash anyway and every bit of energy that's going into breaking those attachments is energy that's not going into breaking your head
What's a good beginner helmet? Looking for my first helmet and was guna go with this icon ? Anything better for around the same price ?
Well I avoid riding in the rain if at all possible, I'll make sure not to ride backwards if I do. Lol
You should test out a $50 BILT helmet from cycle gear I would love to see how that turns out
I tested one it the bolt force when a car turned into me, slammed on my shoulder then head and remember thinking, that was nice like headbutting a pillow
Ryan, work on your light. The video looks a wee bit gray. Enjoy your reviews, they're cool.
Really nice and original review, congratulations! 😉
I have one of these helmets and to be honest it is not bad at all. Considering that it cost way less than the shoi. So i am ok with my Icon
