- Cold Waters: Torpedo Soup
Today we take out the Soviet Alfa class submarine on elite into the Soviet modded campaign for a few laughs on stream.
I hope you enjoy!
Note: I'm playing an Alfa on Elite, That is to say an Alfa that is already pretty much blind that gets a 25% reduction in sonar performance (both active and passive) due to the difficulty level. I don't care if I'm detected, I don't care if I'm spotted and I don't care that I'm not playing the game "right" in your opinion.
Reeeee elsewhere.

Any other captain: "Oh shit helicopter! Dive!"
Magz: "Yes Helicopter, piss off!"
Magz Great job on this video very entertaining.
To the developers this is a perfect example of a sub being able to fight off multiple torpedo attacks ( expertly I must say) while the AI sits on its hands.
1st Helos would drop Torpedoes AND Sonar Buoys both active and passive AND Depth Charges too
2nd the ASW ships would be gliding on quiet; their towed array listening to the battle and guiding the helos to the target. Not crashing in blindly like a WW2 destroyer to drop depth charges on a U-Boat. And where are the Nixies towed decoys, and the surface version of the MOSS.
3rd Helos would be using their dipping sonar again passive and actively to herd the Submarine away from the convoy while continuing the assault.
4th Everytime the Submarine cavitates it gives itself away Helo response should be much swifter and greater.
ASW wins all ties - driving away the sub foils the attack; the sub can reacquire but so can the ASW forces and now they are actively looking.
Magz imagine if: You have threaded your way through strings of sonar buoys passive and active to make your attack. You know there are at least 2 Helos with dipping sonar somewhere above you. You have managed to get into position and fire 2 torpedos at your target. When your 1st torpedo goes active; the screen erupts with double the contacts that have to be identified all moving at close to the same speed in different directions; your torps have acquired targets; but which ones? Then your torps explode but they don't necessarily damage the ships they were supposed to kill.
"Weapons target identified as LST breaking up target identified as Perry class torpedo exploded no damage" confusing isn't it.
Suddenly overhead the sound of Helos and sonar sings out " Multiple active sonar Buoys 135 degrees to port; Sonar second string of Buoys 45 degrees to starboard! BAH-WAH!!! Sonar Sir we have been actively pinged! BAH-WAH! Sonar multiple splashes possible Depth Charges directly overhead"
You order a steep dive at high speed. "We are Cavitating; Sonar new string of buoys directly ahead" suddenly you hear the depth charges go off. They Missed!!
. Realizing this is your chance, you order maximum turns and a 90 degree turn to Port for 30 seconds.
" Sonar torpedo in the water ; torpedo in the water bearing 180 degrees aft".
But the enemy has made a mistake. The depth charges have made too much noise you switch to ultra quiet and slip away as the torpedo chases bubbles in the water. )
You begin the stalk once again.
"Sonar possible submarine contact!"
It seems the enemy also stalks under the seas
"Magz imagine if" - All enemy fleets were on active alert at all times with a 100% uptime on ASW helo's actively dipping at all times while the fleet is moving? That all escorts would be sailing at 10 knots max with towed arrays out on the off chance that a submarine may come into the area with every single sailor in the fleet on high alert ready to deploy every ASW countermeasure at a seconds notice and with such levels of skill that they could find, Identify and begin to move against and herd a hostile submarine faster than it could fire tubes 3 and 4?
Sounds to me like what you are asking for is a game where you take a submarine designed and equipped with appropriate systems and weapons from the 1950's and put it against a modern ASW fleet with near-perfect coordination that is always on alert with a 100% upkeep of all ASW systems at all times.
If that is what floats your boat (or skinks it if you prefer) I'm sure you can mod yourself a dark souls version of Cold Waters, Me personally if I wanted more realistic I'll just play Dangerous waters.
@@MagzGTV I again say you are a marvelous player. I don't doubt that you could play at any level and have.
I think we could find a level that the AI plays a coordinated ASW game (my main complaint) within reason. I find fault with the AI not you. I am not asking for the AI or game to be the version you describe.
I would like to see the alertness of the ASW crew vary according to the mission. launching the invasion of Norway yes the AI should be alert. Running a supply run with minimal forces not so much. Deep within the Barents Sea relaxed, but after your attack your escape should be hounded by every asset available.
Your narration and play brings excitement and educates the watcher on Techniques; Play Style; History, and Knowledge of submarine warfare. I have probably watched 30+ of your videos and still find myself captivated by your ability to draw me into the hunt and keep me focused on your narrative. I have yet to be dissapointed.
Subbed for war thunder stayed for cold waters
Me too. He is a brilliant tactician.
4:00 Damn, dat torpedo spam...
good to see the soviet sub's in action, they look so much better and seem more agile, funny how soviet are more crude in the way they are built and still manage to look better, like a gold plated sledge hammer
They said i wouldn't survive 3 days with out electricity.... 2 months later they say nothing XD
First time I've ever seen a Soviet Alpha "on the ball. "
Love the series, Magz. Great gameplay and explanation on what's happening
That initial torpedo swarm was hilarious to watch. I would be so overwhelmed though.
Love all those Soviet subs (especially the Alfa), hopefully they will be officially added to the game!
"If I hear a torpedo in the water, I'm gonna be really pissed off" as a helo is flying in drop range 😂
Yeah that was torpedo soup lmao
Essex class for ever. You would know what I'm talking about if you were at the stream
I love it when you drive the Alpha.... the damn thing is a sports car!
Love the Alfa. Its like the sports car of the submarine world.
Turn on active sonar, fire a bunch of active torpedoes at the garbage targets, and hit the gas pedal!
Soup needs less salt
*Soup needs more salt.
This water seems to be a 5 molarity solution with torpedoes.
That was some beautiful torpedobeats at the beginning, and an Essex to top things off... excellent video. I can't wait to see Jive and Jingles play with the new mod update too.
In regards to modders modding in new models (got enough mods?): my understanding is Killerfish has deliberately made that impossible so they can restrict new boats to official content only, which they can release as (potentially payware) expansions.
It's not so much that it was deliberately made impossible. The way the game is coded currently, adding new models requires access to the games source code. Which as you can guess is something the developer of a currently active development game is loath to hand out.
@MagzTV >>> _"I'm not picky."_
😊😊😊😊
Ow and more cold waters would be great so much fun watching you.
Loved it. Thanks for posting
I really wish they would add more subs and other campaigns to the real game. Mods are cool and all but its a pain when they update the game and break all the mods i add.
edit: It would even be cool if you could somehow be in control of a surface ship/fleet and go after subs.
As an RCN sailor, I'm just happy that our SSKs are in Playable Subs & More.
Your game is on point!
22:30 - 22:44 Lol Magz look at the top left of the screen at 22:43. At this point the crew chief of that helicopter needs to have his eyes checked.
Immediate strong radar return, drop torp. OOP!
Sounds like the game needs plenty of mods to make the soviets properly playable
You need mods to make the soviets playable at all, Soviets are not available to play as in Vanilla. The Vanilla campaigns are just NATO 1968 and NATO 1984. As for plenty, no just one. Soviet Submarines and more gives you access to all the soviet subs in game along with a bunch of user created subs and several new campaigns including a 1984 and 1968 soviet campaign.
Geez, I feel so sorry for you having to be bored waiting for your sub to chase her.
Saucey searia gets relentlesy pressured by a group of sailor's
that's a video title I'd never think to use
Lucky you didn’t try that in a whiskey, LoL
I would love to see more playable Russian subs in Cold Waters. Alfa's are great I like to see a Papa and some Akula SSNs as well.
I wish this game was online I’d like to see you play against people lol
It's okay to be Bogan
righto.
Thumbnail looked like a long f8f with no wings and a push propeller XD
maybe dive the Alfa to 3000 feet at 42 kt ...cut your engines and come back through the layer to about 200 feet and start shooting.....the 80's era mk.46 have an operational depth of 1500 to maybe 2000 if your lucky at a top speed of 40-45 kt so basically you can outrun and outdive any ASW ship or heli launched torpedo from the 80's until the mk 50 showed up..
Great seeing this, bored with all the US subs. Ruskie subs are a lot of fun, and a good challenge. FYI though, the ASW torps will not target surface ships, have tried many times. Seems not to be in their seeker logic or something.
I've got them to hit before but you have to take them right to the ships. It's risky but fun to do.
MagzTV i have rammed ships I was so close and left torps circling around, and going right under their keel...guess I was less lucky?
Honestly not sure, I wasn't playing your game, just saying it has worked for me.
NOOOOOOO you should have taken the Typhoon.
Typhoon is a ballistic missile submarine, It's not meant for this kind of combat.
I know but it is so cool.
Will these MODs find their way into the developers too? As far as I've heard, they are not that active in releasing new patches and/or content.
I thought the Alfa could go to 2000 ft with no issues. Try that next time :)
You were at '50 at 21:28 perhaps the radar mast was awash? Sea state didn't look too bad mind you.
Magz (I might be wrong) but I think you can push the Alfa much more than 1000 feet? These titanium hulled Soviet subs had crush depths of around 1000 meters if i'm correct?
Super Étendard according to Wikipedia you are absolutly right, Sir.
You can yes, But if anything goes wrong at that depth its pretty much game over.
Is there anyone working on russian crew voices for gameplay like this? That would be immersive as f#ck.
I wonder...How should the Alpha hunt other subs if they can not hear anything?
Firstly notice what I said at the start, I'm playing on elite so the alpha you see here is suffering a 25% penalty to sonar systems. That said Alfa was built as a high speed attack submarine, A hunter/killer designed to rapidly reach a detected submarine and strike it very quickly.
As a general rule it would use other vessels to locate and track it's target as it closed in until finally getting the target within it's own sonar range.
plus, Alfa active sonar for attacking is very good. Their passive systems were not great, but their active was actually better than Western subs of the era.
If you drive the Alfa around long enough at high enough speed, you might eventually get some tonnage via ramming
new to the game. but how do i mod or make everything red like that. id love to have the red running lights pllzzz
This video gave me the worst anxiety..
Red October.
Yo magz could u fly the VB 10c out for a video?
Why doesn't the Alfa have towed sonar?
what does it mean when knuckled has formed?
look up jive turkeys cold water videos for better info.
now for a challange you need to not use the 3d view. that would be more realistic.
you sound a little sick
Sore throat, nothing major.
SENPAI :D
Seeing that Windows circle on the mouse pointer is so repulsive that it nearly makes me puke.
