Janes Longbow 2 Win7 64bit

- Oct 2013 Update - several people have asked for help getting this to work, so here goes:
- If you don't have one already, install a Glide wrapper. I recommend this one myself... www.zeus-software.com/download...
- Configure Glide wrapper as you wish (set high res and gamma correction at least)
- Download this file, and run it as required. This is your one-stop ready-to-go LB2 installation... www.rusty-cage.com/share/LB2-W...
- Follow the instructions about adding the registry keys, and set LB2.exe to WinXP SVC Pack 2 comp mode.
WARNING: Some virus checkers will immediately kill LB2.exe as a virus. This is very much not the case. Despite thousands of emails telling them otherwise, Norton, McAfee, Microsoft and others still haven't added the file to a safe list. You may well have to allow the file within your own virus checker.
- Run lb2cfg.exe and select 3DFX as preferred display option.
- Run LB2.exe and job's done! It will ask for your disk 1 or 2 depending on what map you choose to use first, provide the disk and away you go.
Yep, it you don't have a copy of the original disks, this install won't work.

Another mission here:
• Janes Longbow 2 Win7 6...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A recon mission from Janes Longbow 2 on a Windows 7 64-bit PC, with loads of RAM and 4 core processor. I use nGlide for the 3DFX wrapper, and use Fraps full version to record. Interestingly as a pleasant aside, it limits the speed very nicely so I don't need to piss around with CPU throttles and rubbish like that. I set to it to record at 25FPS and, well, see for yourself... Rockets hit targets, Hellfire TOF is in seconds rather than milliseconds (watch the heads-down countdown), and best of all the Rotor RPM Low "bug" is avoided totally. This particular install is courtesy of Flyboy at SimHQ, see this thread here for more details: simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php...
This sim is old (1997), but in my humble opinion, still the best combat helo sim out there (except maybe Black Shark). How much would I love a Longbow 3...? You there Mr Hollis!?
Enjoy...! - Ігри
I loved this game. I have 4 hours in the AH-64D simulator and can testify, Longbow 2's systems modeling and flight modeling are as real as it gets. I wish they would make a sequel for today's PC graphics capabilities.
I miss that game.
Have you seen ArmA 3 AH-64D project or DCS?
@@Dwight511 I've asked heatblur to take up the Longbow project since the F-14 is pure perfection!
If Jane didn’t shut down, we could
DCS announced its new Longbow project hopefully it'll be out by this year
Back when I was a 10 year old kid, I couldn't even take off the ground. But the game got me hooked on aviation.
Got this recommended couple of days before DCS: AH-64D release
I wish DCS: AH-64D was released already. We still have to wait until December. :(
Lol
@@Vogel- Lol
This with Multi-Crew was just the best. Wish there was another good AH-64 sim..... Oh well one day in DCS World maybe....
It was just announced for DCS
Got your wish :)
Those who want to relive this should probably look at the new DCS Ah-64D pre-order trailer.
I think most viewers are way ahead of you... ;)
I remember playing this and the other, 1995 Apache combat helicopter simulation back in the day, before 2000 anyway. I have this memory that in one heli sim you could plan missions, which copters to take for yourself and your team. Oh man it still looks nostalgic.
I had no clue what I was doing in this as a kid. Here's hoping all these years later the DCS Apache will go smoother haha!
the amount of hours i spent playing this game.
i used to play this game back in the late 90's, aahhh good old days.. i remember they even have a documentary on iraq war, at the game menu.. i also used to tell my wingman, to finish off enemy tanks, when im out ofammo, too lazy to go back to base and refill LOL ..good game..
I remember my mom taking me to buy this game after an all A report card.
hell, my mom never hugged me! my father was with a two-timing hooker !
I love the way this comment is writen
Who's here after seeing the DCS release??!!
I managed to get this working on my rig thanks to your video and links etc. I did have to tweak it here and there and move a bit away from what you did here. Thank you so much for taking the time to post all this stuff. I missed out on this sim when it came out as I was in the Army and then life happened etc. Really enjoying it. Even got hold of the manual in its bound form. I am wallowing in the late 90's :)
I know this is a couple years old now but thanks for keeping the link active. I still like to load this game up once in a while and play it but to this day there is no equal. The BEST flight sim ever created!
I really should get into LB2 again and see how it runs on my newer Windows 7 64-bit machine. I am the creator of the Windows Vista/7 Fix and only ever tested it on 32-bit systems. LB2 and Comanche Gold are still my favorite combat helicopter sims.
Hey mate! I cannot get it to work myself nowadays, perhaps an obscure Windows update once but no joy now. I really miss it
Hi Malc, that's a shame. I plan on reinstalling LB2 soon and having a play to see if it works for me. It's been years since I did any of this stuff so I'll almost be starting from scratch. Where exactly does your game crash?
Had some epic moments with this shit... Now to be continued about 8 years later in High fidelity with the upcomming DCS AH-64D module....
I had this one too I've had almost about every Jane's combat sim I can think of except for A-10 and I liked them all.
It's true. I went to Alt-O and turned off terrain filtering. The depth cuing is surprising better with the tiles up-close terrain. If I turn terrain filtering back on, the up-close terrain is a blurry merge of colours and makes it harder for me to visually estimate the height of the Longbow from the ground.
Best chopper game ever. Flying this bird was soo much fun.
no, GUNSHIP is better
THIS IS AN OLDIE. LOVED THIS GAME.
DUDE , such an amazing game! Jealous that you have it up and running!
Thanks dude - still enjoying it four and a half years on from this video. :thumbs-up:
The best part was watching your kills in replay mode from the enemy POV.
Yes, i used a Glide Wrapper and a USB Joystick. There is a clip on my page that shows Longbow 2 on Vmware player. I had no issues playing the Demo version.
Ahhhhhhhhh the memories...
Bought this at Compusa after class one day. Spent many hours on this thing on my Gateway 2000.
best of the best in helisim category
One of the few games I've held on to. I've got all the floppy disks, although I doubt they still work.
loved this game when i was a kid, i always used the FLIR when firing just so i can see my targets explode in night vision
FLIR stands for Forward Looking Infra Red, and uses IR to 'see' targets. Night Vision enhances visible light to allow you to see.
I'd use the cannon as much as I could, because of the PNVS camera. .
Any idea on How to get Jane's Longbow GOLD working correctly under Windows 7 x64 ?
i've done the GoldFX patch , installed nGlide and set compatibility Mode to Windows XP Sp 2 , choose Run 6x4 but still crashing after 2nd video where to apache appears and destroy tanks
I have a 4 disk copy of Longbow Anthology from 1988. Will this described installation work for all versions included?
Man; I love Jane's Longbow..!!! =)
Roll on Longbow 3. Can't wait.
Love Longbow Gold Longbow 2 from Jane's Combat Simulation, back to 1997/8..
Great stuff. I followed you instructions on Simhq and have this beauty runnng on my PC. However my screen is stretched wide. How to display in normal width?
i remember spending hours just shooting stuff in this game xD
How do I customise my keys? The Alt-O | Controls | Customize controls is "inactive". How can I set it to "Active". I want to remap the NumKeypad keys to other keys as I an trying the game on a laptop which doesn't have a numeric keypad.
As of 7/23/2014, this installed and loaded up without a hitch. Sometimes the graphics go all wonky but you select a building or exit a building and it seems to fix the problem. Will redo all my training tonight and let ya know how far I can get. (Using Win7 64bit)
The rapidshare links are down on the thread you linked in description. Did you use those to get the install to work?
I installed it on pmetium3 with voodoo 3 and For some reason the pedals react very slow to the keyboard...is it know issue ?
Can I use the joystick Logitech Cordless Freedom 2.4 with commanche 4 ?
Please if you have used it, let me know how to configure the "vertical ascend". Thanks a lot.
My child hood is in this game always thought it was my weak graphics card holding me back now as an adult I under stand it was just the times
how many came here because they can't wait for DCS to release the apache :)
Me.
I can get it to work but sometimes I got random freezes with voice looping, do you know what can be done to fix this issue?
I'm going to sort this out. I still have it in the spare room
any trouble with the game crashing or freezing? i have this running relatively well on my windows 7 64bit laptop and a glide wrapper but i get freezes from time to time during the middle of missions or at the end of missions. a little frustrating.
Still more fun that DCS AH-64
Hi my friend, is there an easy way to installing nowdays? I'm trying but I can not.
Did you get the graphics to work in VMware player and what about joystick controllers?
Daum, I still have Longbow and Longbow 2 and the thick manual... The CD for L2 is scratched so it doesn´t work anymore. These games were AWESOME. Never tried the russian chopped sim from few years back. Did anyone else?
I own Longbow 1. Is the Longbow 2 manual much different?
@@MUFSpoiler Damn mate, it's 9 years I wrote that comment and like over 20 years when I read the manuals... Don't remember to be honest. I should check tho.
Wow, i been playing msfs2020 and it brought me back to this game when i was 11........i need to checkout dcs that everyone has been commenting
Hi, I am 'Flyboy' from the SimHQ Forums. Indeed LB2 is still the best combat helicopter sim out there. Even more so than DCS: Black Shark, in many areas. Have you heard about Combat-Helo, a spiritual successor to LB2? P.S. Thanks for crediting me in your video description!
I remember playing this when I was 6. I still have this game too but I dont think my cumputer can handle the time warp in technology lmao. Btw there is a game called arma 3 theres a pretty good sim. But you have to get mods for it if you want to fly longbow.
Still have the discs
And it is now 2021, waiting for the new DCS AH-64 release 😀
My pre-order is complete ;)
And now we got one in DCS...
I was adicted to this when I was a kid. Anyone know if the Apache in Arma 2 is as good as this?
Its very basic "simulation". Nowhere close to any dedicated sim. Furthermore, im not sure if Apache even is in the A2, i think actually you need one of the datadisks.
I know its been almost 13 years now since the release of this game but has anyone managed to get this game to work on WIN10 - or even MacOS?
I think it's been allot longer than 13 years
Listening to building a skyscraper noise... ☝️😉
How to play this game in winxp
Malc, have you been able to get Longbow 2 to work in Windows 10? Mine never has worked because the disk check software is blocked in Windows 10.
Not recently - I had it working fine of version 1903 but since that was updated it has stopped again and never been able to make it work again since.
The people that hold the rights to this game need to let someone do a complete remake of this game in Win 64 bit 4k res. I don't understand what the hold up is!!
DCS module pleeeeaaase....
damn, i remember playing this when i was 8, of course my POS laptop was no where near this level
I stil have this "Longbow Limited Edition" game but it wont work on my WinXP anymore so i used a PC with Win98 and it works but now the Sidewinder Precision Pro Joy stick wont work with Win98...GRRR I loved this game......
anyone got a link for this game? I wanted it bad and it seems it is abandonware now (free)
If only a team would do with this sim what bms did to falcon 4
Eagle dynamics get DCS idea from this I wonder?
My game always crash... anybody have same situation?
I collect old flight-sim.
Both fixed wing and rotors.
Am soon to have about 50 different games.
Incl the original TOP GUN WITH THE HOTAS!!!!
I have it running on my Windows 10 PC. With nGlide.
Wow, so recording at 25fps limits framerate to that and now everything works fine? The low rpm thing, btw, is not a bug, but the rockets missing, sim running at 2X speed are, and rapid key presses are.
Yep, works(ed) great (Win10 has killed it for me though - cannot get it to run now :( ) Rotor RPM could be stalled if too much torque applied if run in an unthrottled state, hence calling it a "bug" but to be fair it is a consequence of modern hardware rather than a programming issue (as all these quirks were). The real AH-64 won't allow the rotors to stall due to clutches in drive gear and rotor shaft.
@@Malc2169 I just tried using Nvidea half v-sync adaptive mode with a 60hz refresh rez to give 30hz in-sim and while the 2X speed seems to have stopped, the rockets still hit short. I even tried recording with wirecast at 25fps which really slowed my framerate further, and they still fall short. I've never seen rockets angle upward properly in LB2. LB Gold was fine, though, but that required like Win95.
So you're saying if you pull too hard on the collective in the real AH-64 when hovering it just won't pitch the rotors on-command enough such that the engines can't keep the RPM up? I'm increasingly starting to think that VRS may actually be very badly modeled but present in LB after all, but that's different than overpitching the main rotor, which is a real problem in helos, too. For some reason, I actually can't even get the low rpm 'overpitching' thing to happen anymore that seemed present on XP. So maybe they meant to model VRS and not overpitching low rpm states. Did Betty actually say " Rotor RPM Low" when you cranked the collective in a hover... think so but can't quite remember?
@@Reticuli Do you have FRAPS? Try with that if possible - maybe it did something different, don't know about modern nVidia stuff. Been long time since I played LB2. Is VRS modelled? Don't know. I would doubt Vortex Ring State was modelled back in 97, the flight model I would guess was scripted rather than lots of physics going on. In my old setup on W7 I could still induce the Rotor RPM Low calls from Betty, but at least because the sim was running slower I could catch and recover it before they stalled completely.
@@Malc2169 I don't have FRAPS. I don't see any evidence of your rockets hitting on target in either of your LB2 vids, man.
As for VRS, I'm saying if you're certain the Apache doesn't allow overpitching of the main rotor and low RPM from that, then it's possible LB2 is actually poorly modeling VRS. Because in Windows 7 the only time I'm dropping like a rock and having to side slip to recover is when I drop the collective too fast when already in a hover or I settle into power stupidly when decelerating to a hover too fast... which is not entirely wrong. I'll take your word for it that overpitching is still possible in Windows 7, because I can't get it to happen like I could in XP and I was sort of missing it. I've complained to people before that VRS was clearly not in LB2 when they said it was, but now I'm not so sure that's the case. If you think the overpitching thing was a bug, I mean that's kind of a possibility this is what's going on. Looking at the manual, they do mention VRS. Not sure if they mention overpitching and being too abrupt with the collective raising, though. They certainly could have had both on the Kiowa and Blackhawk, obviously, but I didn't know the Apache had protections against that.
I also find it interesting that the programmers put a trimmer command, but then clearly added rate command & attitude hold instead, and if you use the trimmer with this last-minute rc/ah law they put in Longbow Anthology, then you're just going to hold a roll and/or pitch moment and quickly crash. So the trimmer is useless. They should have allowed people to choose whether they wanted cyclic mode with trimmer button or rc/ah joystick 'SAC' mode. I would have always used the latter, but they clearly meant it originally to be the former before it got changed, with that legacy trimmer command still present.
It is mildly annoying that they got rid of the ability to switch turn coordination on or off in LB2 like in LB Gold, but at least coordination is modeled correctly in LB2, unlike in EECH still where FM 0 & 2 want to mix in yaw even at lowest speeds.
@@Malc2169 In Windows 7 if you set the framerate to 60hz or 120hz V-synced or unconstrained with V-sync off, you get a VRS-like thing when you descend without lateral airflow over the main rotor where you lose cyclic authority (accurate) but the RPM drops to zero catastrophically (inaccurate). I recall that in Windows 95, 98, and (I think) XP any low RPM state was recoverable with dropping the collective and adding lateral movement of some type. I don't recall a VRS-like situation back then, though. Recovery doesn't seem possible anymore. Obviously if you're at 120hz or unconstrained FPS the sim is also sped up like you have 2X speed activated. At Half Adaptive V-sync with 60hz (so it's capped at 30fps max), I don't get any VRS-like effect at all no matter what I do. Occasionally with too much collective maybe I'm getting a fleeting mention of Low RPM, but it's hard to do and never catastrophic.
I think what they meant to do is perhaps have VRS inaccurately tied to RPM and also have raising the collective too fast also cause a slight drop in lift, but that both would be tied together such that if you dropped the collective you would accurately regain cyclic authority in either situation, could add some lateral motion, and regain lateral airflow to counteract either situation. Unfortunately, sim speed and RPM are both tied to frames per second and some other stuff, such that on modern systems it all gets fouled up. I do think you are supposed to be getting both VRS and overpitch effects, though the former isn't supposed to be tied to low RPM (actually the opposite), but it's a pretty cool way of doing it they came up with if that's indeed the case. Unfortunately with stuff being tied to FPS, none of it works right anymore. At least if you cap it at 30fps, though, you don't drop like a rock easily. Then again, some people might want to lock it at 60hz and be forced to be extra careful, because I certainly can't recover from LB2 on Windows 7 when it does that.
And come to think of it, I think autorotation might also be broken regardless of FPS, since at no cap or V-sync setting or unconstrained can I keep the RPM up as I near the ground now matter how much IAS I've got. At one point I managed to get in 130kts and still had no RPM. I know on older Windows on at least one of them (LB1 or LB2?) I could autorotate, though it was a little more challenging than it should have been.
I managed to obtain the .iso's from the interweebs for janes longbow2. However I have bumped into an issue. I have virtual clone drive which should fix the problem of not having a physical copy. But whenever I run the .exe and mount the .iso, nothing happens. I'm just repeatedly told to insert the disk. Am i missing a step?
Hagan Gasimov Very old technology doesn't recognise virtual devices? Dunno... Having the original CDs means I've never had to rely on anything else.
Malc2169 thanks for the concern. It looks like it was just a bad .iso
I got a new one and it now runs flawlessly. The only issue is when I alt tab and go back the game decides to completely fuck up its image.
Hagan Gasimov Yes, it definitely doesn't like ALT+TAB, etc. Glad you got sorted, it's still a great ride, despite its age related deficencies.
now i do have another question. Ive gone through basic (a few game crashes here and there) but is there anyway to rebind the controls? eg: cyclic to my hotas, instead of using the + and - keys?
Hagan Gasimov I guess you mean collective (Apache has auto-throttle)? Yes, there is an option under controls which lets you select keyboard or throttle axis, and further you can choose push (jet style) or pull (helicopter style) in there too. I cannot remember the exact location as on iPad right now, but I'll check and reply later...
OMG, this can be fixed to run on Win7? Am so getting this installed right now :)
did you make it?
Great Video of a great game. I still play Longbow 2 but i can't get it to work on my W7 64bit PC so i use VMware Player.

I LOVE this game I had to recover a OLD PC with WIN98 to play it last week but I am Old School and do not know how to get it recorded like you have...Can you please help a guy out and tell me how to record it like you have? Thanks For Your Kind Responses Man..
Am downloading now. Remember this one. There was never, ever, a sim later on which came even close. Took me 17 years ago a week to fly a perfect mission ;) But then I became good in it, A stick is a must. And Apache Air Assault really sucked and was depression at the same time
I use FRAPS to record the videos. In LB2, you have to remember to start the video recording after you enter the cockpit, and stop recording before you exit the cockpit else the UI won't come back afterwards. To this end, using the frame rate overlay is a useful tool to remind you it is still recording. You'd do well to buy yourself a registered copy of FRAPS too. There are probably other recording programs available too, but I've always used FRAPS with great results. Editing afterwards using Windows Moviemaker.
Malc2169 Thanks Very Much Man I will try Fraps !!!
I meant from 1998, of course - Sorry
There maybe hopefully an Apache Longbow 3 on the way (www.combat-helo.com) god I hope so...

for some reason my heli takes off at about 1000 miles an hour but it turns like titanic. why?
Fucked if I know! How about you give us all half a chance to help you by telling us what your computer specs are, what heli you are trying to fly, what software you are using to support it, etc.
well I've used FLY-LB2-WIN-FIX(V3) to install the game since the link in your video description didn't work. not sure if they are the same thing. I've installed nglide as well, game runs fine, sounds are good. Although sometimes freezes and i can't do shit about it other than logging out, the problem is that the heli doesn't behave anything like in your video. it turns about 90 degrees per minute. pitch and roll are about the same. everything else seems to be fine.
my specs are:

so buggy

Calling it buggy today is harsh - it's from a different era, where weekly updates and patches were non-existent.
@@Malc2169 Of course. It was not this buggy on Windows 95.
OMG the sound is LOUD AS FUCK.
Its not much to looks at today, but the actual math behind the simulation is extremely on point.
