Hi, I just found this video after a tough day at work, struggling through a career change into autobody and I just want to thank you for sharing and teaching.
You're welcome - feel free to ask any ?s you have James. I actually worked in high volume body shops so you're right, there is pressure and you have to be good to survive. The hardest part is getting filler straight - this channel focuses on that a lot - stick with it my friend 👍✌️😊
If you're only getting 4 spot welds per belt you're buying some cheap assed belts. Use ceramic belts from 3M (Cubitron II) Norton (Blaze) VSM or Sunmight and you'll be able to do a complete quarter panel or more with only one of them. I recommend 60 grit.
I dont use a belt sander. JUNK. Tried it. Old school blair cutter, or a Spottle, works for me. Every tech is different. Laugh out loud! Happy New Year!
We use the Baxter brand belts for our Baxter belt sander. We rarely have to change our belts and we use it multiple times a day. Usually they only get changed when they snap lol
Great video like always Jerry you are a true master I wish you the best for the next year I have learned so much by watching you you are a great teacher may God-bless you and keep on making these videos
Thanks so much for the support Luis - I appreciate your kind words. Happy New Year to you and your family and look forward to hearing from you in 2022. God bless you too my friend :)
Sort of the same here but it's always better if I have super sharp tools. I buy the double ended 1/8" drill bits from HF - when the get just a bit dull I toss 'em - not dealing w/ dull drill bits, sand paper, blades, etc :)
I have tried this before it does work great for a long time until the carbide bit gets dull and it will especially working with HSS. Normally I use the belt sander method, but I like the 2 drill bit method as well. I don't like the cutter, because you need a through hole to keep it from walking around.
I dont have rust here in central Texas. Must be a challenge. I am on my last years doing this crap. Great to see how this done in the "rust states"! Thank You. Happy New Year!
I cut a strip next to the spot welds and roll it up like a can of spam. NO DRILLING... little hammer and dolly work and your ready to install new panel.
I like using an 18” 3m belt sander to remove all spot welds. 60 grit 3m paper. Goes a little faster than 80 grit but not too fast to burn through the adjacent panel. The die grinder method is probably faster, but throws a lot of sparks around the shop which puts nearby cars at risk. Also, it’s easy to damage adjacent panels with die grinder if you aren’t careful. I know a guy who puts 2 grinding wheels on his and he bears down on it like he’s trying to push the car off the lift. He throws sparks halfway across the shop!! 😂 Try better paper and maybe a longer belt sander. Should last longer than 4 welds. I get more than 10 easy. Good video!
Good video. Any comments on how many spots you can drill out on a single drill bit (before sharpening) and on a single bit from the cutting kit? Thanks
That's quite a few welds. I figured there's got to be better paper out there for this sander. I can't stand dull paper so my estimate is probably on the low end but the tool does work great when you need to reach :) Thanks for that info BZapp

Worked for a guy once, no cutters. Chisel to seperate, hammer dolly metal back, into place weld tear or rips. Never again. Have you ever tried a spot weld drill that applies pressure to cut fast? Great, when they fit
Wow - that doesn't sound fun. I have not used one of those but they look like they would make it a bit easier if you had to drill out tons of them. Thanks for your input Randy - Happy New Year :)

Doesn’t the belt sander make the material too thin?
It can - yes. It's actually best to use a spot weld cutter or drill bit. :)

This is off topic but what gas mix do you use for your mig? I have a tig with 100% argon but surely I couldn't use that for it right?
75/25 argon/co2 mix
