    I loved Sands of time. For me the combat was always incredible but I also really felt like there weren't any games that broke up the combat with the puzzles like this did. And they were carefully thought out puzzles that took some solving too!! The idea of using visual queues instead of using UI elements really never even registered to me, but I now understand why some games feel so lackluster compared to others. Thanks for the lesson m8!!

    • @DesignDelve
      @DesignDelve  4 роки тому +4

      Thank you for watching m8! I completely agree with the puzzles, always took me a while to complete but never felt unfair. But as a child I couldn’t get past the wall jumping section before you get the dagger of time so I don’t know what I’m taking about.

    but after playing the whole trilogy I've become a Diehard fan of the series...
    I actually Love the Warrior Within, maybe bcoz of story-line, music track, The Prince himself and bcoz of one of the most Powerful-Supervillains in the gaming history : *THE DAHAKA*

    Great that someone is giving this game the attention it always deserved. This was the first game I ever had on PS2, and I must have played through it at least like 30 times. I played all the sequels obsessively (though I sold the unconnected Prince of Persia (2008) back to Gamestop as soon as I finished it). And I actually only got excited about Assassin's Creed when it came out because it was like Prince of Persia.
    I don't mean this as a critique of you, I am genuinely a little confused and curious...but I don't recall ever having that much trouble with Farah. The babysitting in a couple puzzle segments looks bad from today's perspective, but it was incredibly standard at the time and so kind of unfair as a point of critique. But more importantly, I don't remember her being nearly as much trouble in combat as you say. I remember dying in combat myself from running out of sands far more often than I remember her dying in combat. And combat sections with her involved were a small minority of the game's combat, anyway. I also don't think I ever bugged out in a hitbox in that game. Perhaps there were some changes and/or issues with the PC port? I'm not sure 'cause I've never tried it.

    You deserve more views and subs, and your video just reminded me of how I discovered, as a kid, this franchise : a girl friend to whose brother I lent a ps2 game (a ratchet and clank if I remember correctly, not sure but a big name) had his console completely scratch my disc while dying due to bad airflow and the chimneys dust and burnt wood fumes she received due to being placed beside it. Embarrassed, her mother wanted to buy me a game in exchange for the one destroyed, but not knowing what to bui she grabbed the first one she saw in a store, and gave me the Sands of Time. I felt kinda cheated on the moment because I had never heard of this game compared to the household name of the game I lost, but when I played it for the first time, fell in love immediately. I owe this girl friend a great discovery, forever grateful

    Farah wasn't a problem in the original copy back in 2003 (not Steam or the PS3 upload) In the original Farah wouldn't get stuck on terrain and you wouldn't get stuck in her hitbox because the Devs implemented a... (another hitbox?) so that if you're too close to Farah she'd take a step back letting you pass (or move more freely) The rest, yes. The rest is the same. (though normally it's good to have the enemies distracted on you further away from Farah so she doesn't get attacked)

    Now by now I know what you're thinking, JC your comments are hilarious and not at all long winded and you're probably reading this under the assumption that I'll be making a funny comment, now that may be true as I am indeed a comedic genius you have to understand this game has a very special place in my heart, not many people know but once upon a time I was but a child and as a child I remember using the dagger of time to rewind because of that sick ass sound effect (Whooooaaaaaooooh whooooooaaaaoooooh) so anyway back to the topic at hand donald duck definitely damn well carried the industry on his donald dong and that shit ain't something no one can take away from him. and I don't think you understand the symbolic meaning behind the grande epic of the story, farah, farrah, fara idk how to spell her name but that woman is strong and independant because it proves that the prince is even cooler than her has a time rewindingginiwerrewinding dagger that's super cool, also just to point out the whole 1001 arabian knights aesthetic of this game really sold me on the arabian aesthetic as a theme for all fiction and it kind of sucks the only other example i can draw from recent memory of this is when I watched the 14th warrior or maybe it was 15th warrior with my mates and i fell asleep until one of my mates asked me to open a can of guinness for him idk why but i did and it spilled all over my mates carpet ruining it entirely. so yeah this game is overall not the best but atleast very nostagic for me.

    What is sad is that the action-platformer was extremely popular around 2004 but died in the 7th gen. There are only 5 good 3d action platformers I can count since 2010 (Jedi Survivor, Fallen Order, Kena Bridge of Spirits and Ghostrunner 1 and 2). Jedi Survivor is probably the best action platformer and it is clear it took inspiration from the Sands of Time trilogy

    While I do very much believe Sands of Time changed how video game developers approached games after that point, there was something about the 2000-2010 era where the games were just so fuckin good that I feel they hold up eternally even if remade and remastered several times after. Don't get me wrong that era put out some LAUGHABLE and simply PATHETIC games too, but the standard held to GOOD games was just so high then that it feels that the innovation of gaming peaked before it's technology could, and now that we have the tech, everything seems just downhill in comparison. As an ex tester at Ubisoft, I have seen the fall off my beloved PoP franchise that got me to join Ubi in the first place, Hope is all we can hold out for something similar to be introduced to this generation of games, but till then the past era of games is where it's at

    I was late to the Sands Of Time party (played it in 2011), but for a long while it was the only 3d platformer that I loved to bits. As impressed as I was with, well, everything the game does, I think what blew my mind the most was how they incorporated failure into the story. From what I recall, every time I died, the Prince made some kind of remark about how that’s not how the story goes and he’ll try telling it again. Also I don’t remember having any frustrations with Farah, I played the PS2 and PS3 versions for what it’s worth. I suddenly feel like replaying it again :)

    I remember I played this game the last in the series, as I started out with The Two Thrones first, and went back from that. Immensely fun game, the combat is choppy since it's a very old game, but the platforming and the powers of Sands of Time are limited but very cool to use.
    Overall, huge trip of nostalgia playing this game again, would play again if I could forget it all.

    That affirmation that the game industry owes this game a lot is not an exageration. When this game was released the Prince was the most complex character ever created in terms of animations and showed the industry all that was possible with only one character. Also, not only the Sands of Time mechanic, but also the fact that everything, including elements like the pause menu, saving and loading screen were integrated in the narrative blowed everyones mined. Also, little reminder that Assassin's Creed, the game that basically shaped like 70% of open world games that came out in the last 15 years, was originally a PoP sequel.
    PD: By the way, I don't know if you were really unlucky, but I finished this game like 20 times when I was a kid, as far as I remember, and I've finished it several times recently, and I never had so many problems with Farah. I mean, I just learned she can actually hurt the Prince with her arrows watching this video! That never happened to me...

      @@DesignDelve Well when I first played it was back in grade school. Back then I didn't really get the story as I was not versed in English, but the combat and gameplay was really fun. Later on I came to really like the story too.
      So if I were to go in order:
      Combat: is really engaging, fun, brutal, versatile, from combos, to wall attacks to block counters, takedowns. You have to adapt to different enemies as they each have different strenghts and weaknesses.
      Enemies: They aren't just copy-paste with larger health pools. Each tier is definitely stronger with stronger combos going from basic attacks to kicks to block breakers. The lesser bosses are engaging and the game doesn't really tell you how to beat them, you kinda need to figure that out yourself.
      Story: Looking back now, I can see that there were a lot of questions unanswered and there is lesser exposition that in SoT, but it is also kind of part of the story too that it is this way. Although as I said a biit more exposition on events and such would be welcome, but you can get most of the stuff that the game already provides.
      Music: It is by far one of the most memorable OSTs among games. I come to listen to it from time to time.
      Dahaka: Dahaka

  • @iansmith8747
    @iansmith8747 3 роки тому

    Good video, however on the topic of babysitting simulator, I think you've got it wrong.
    It's easy to keep enemies between the prince and Farah so she doesn't stab you with arrows, so that's just another skill you have to learn.
    By fighting the sand creatures a short distance from Farah, she won't become a victim of collateral damage.
    And when a sand creature attacks Farah, just freeze them and leave them there, go back to fighting the others.
    If you keep the sand creatures busy, it's unlikely Farah will face (and you will have to freeze) two creatures at a time.
    So basically, git gud.
    I can't believe you didn't like Farah, her only flaw was tolerating the prince who is an a cringy arrogant twat.
    I think it says a lot about the game that it holds up despite such a childish protagonist.

    Well... I don't have that inconvenience with Farah.
    I have completed the game a couple of times without Farah dying once. It's a really simple problem you can avoid by fighting the enemies away from her.
    If she's at a decent distance, the enemies will focus on you and not on her, since they teleport to follow you and keep you on the fight.
