Gary, I just wanted to say how valuable your videos are to me. I'm soon moving house and I've spent the last few months trawling through various YT channels to find my way forward; mostly though, I've found it a mystifying journey. However, when I found your channel, it was like a super strength spotlight being shone on the subject. An enterprising man doing what the manufacturer should have already done. Why oh why do all the solar/battery manufacturers (up to now) fail to provide adequate control over their products. Having spent all that money installing them, many of us don't want to just leaved them to run dumbly. I am not asking for some fancy AI (yet), but even getting sufficient manual control seems very difficult.
I went Solar Edge, partly for panel optimisers, but partly because it looked like their system control was superior. I was mistaken. For years they promised a customer control system. Finally it has come out, but it is a joke. I had to get my installer to give me profile writing permission as the customer controls are totally inadequate. I also had to move my Solar Edge CT clamp to stop it pushing house battery into EVs when I charge them.

Great video - good to see more of this, though the biggest drawback (for wider inverter support) is the woeful lack of good API design and offerings from inverter manufacturers. We currently support GivEnergy and Growatt.
Agreed - it's clear that if the mass market wants fire and forget solutions then manufacturer APIs are the way forward. Those manufacturers who are unable to provide APIs (for whatever reason) will lose sales, in my view.
From what Richard has told us in your interview, there is clearly a crucial need for communication standards between devices to be devised.
I've just notified him of two project managers in the British Standards Institute who are now keen to talk to him😊

Big ups to Richard, he has produced a system that does exactly what I would do if I spent all day adjusting charging and discharging. I've only been running it for a couple of days and I am very impressed. The fact that it examines charge rates and usage using an API means that it is always up to date, my Remote Control History shows multiple entries from MYEO sometimes updating every half an hour. Well done, sir.
I totally agree - having used the service for over 4 months now, it's worked perfectly - I set it to charge my batteries to 100% every night, regardless of the weather, and it just sorts it!
As always, an excellent video Gary. I found it really interesting and informative. I have a GivEnergy Inverter and battery and an EV. This sounds just what I've been waiting for.

Yes probably would be short video, but worthwhile as hearing people talking about something rather than seeing what it looks like is difficult. Surprised the MyEo channel has no videos published already showing or demonstrating it. There is a free account option but not sure you will get to see all the features and advanced settings. I'm using Wonder Watt at the moment which is a similar type of service so be nice to compare the two and see which would work best for me. Thanks anyway.

Home Assistant integration would be excellent for this, all it would need is a binary sensor to turn on when the battery should charge and off when it should stop charging. Users could then write automations using the binary sensor as a trigger. This way the requirements could be relaxed to only Octopus Energy and would then work with any solar inverters that are integrated into Home Assistant.
Agreed, but most people with solar and battery installations don’t have the skills nor the patience for that (myself included 🤣). MyEO provides a great alternative, then 👍🏻
@@GaryDoesSolar I understand - I think my suggestion could generate more revenue for MyEO by opening up the service to people without GivEnergy interters who don't want the trouble of writing complex automations of which I'm sure there are many.
I've been using HA for years now and there are many people of all skill levels using it. Not just super geeks.
Home Assistant has a blueprint service that are basically pre-made automations that users can fill with their devices to perform a predefined set of actions and they are incredibly popular as they make automating things easier. I believe that demonstrates that if MyEO was available for HA as a binary sensor, it would be very popular.
Very useful. I agree, we need common APIs that all inverters, car chargers and energy providers can use so they work together regardless of make and model. I have a home made system that does a similar job but it requires three separate devices to talk to each other. My main issue was the car Ohme car charger which tells me absolutely nothing at all and forced me to monitor the electricity cable going to it.
Yeah, I really like MyEO. And I agree with you on the standards front. My whole career in the mobile industry has revolved around creating standards - and when they exist, you get a ton of innovation on top 👍🏻

Yeah, it’s perfect for me as well. I likely have the skills to set up an HA solution to do this, but you know, I’d rather spend my time on other things… 🤷♂️ 👍🏻

Hi Gary, I am also a fan of your videos but I haven't yet seen a video over net reliability. As a part of my training as an electrician many decades ago, I attended a lecture from an engineer from the National Grid in which he explained how the grid had to be kept in balance at all times. He cited an example of Cup final day when the football match was live on tv and millions were following it.
At half time they had several gas fired power stations on stand-by because the knew that at half time more than a million electric kettles would be switched on at the same to make a cup of tea.
This was in an era when the only significant input to the grid came from power stations under their control. How much more difficult it must be now to balance the grid with variable sources such as wind ,solar and input from home batteries. This gives me the impression that grid reliability must suffer from these developments and I'm wondering what will happen to home installations if the grid goes down. How many installations will function independently if this happens?

We are hoping to expand too, but like MyEO, we are limited by the lack of APIs. There's no standard. GivEnergy are leading the way.

This would suit me greatly, annoyingly I don’t think it can cope with micro inverters (yet) as I’m with octopus and I’m getting givenergy all in one batteries, but there’s hope it will add use you solar systems with micro inverter overtime. :-)😊 another greatly informative video.

@@GaryDoesSolar I send off an email and got reply within a minute even though I sent off the question very early this morning when I I got home from work! I was wondering if he ever had time to sleep, a very helpful and friendly man 👍. An update on our progress toward turning our 70s bungalow in a eco-friendly place to retire too. Roof repairs completed today (swapped out old “valleys” for fibreglass ones as all our small leak were in the old valleys) , we are now confident it will take our planned 30ish panels! just about to book in roof/loft insulation man who also is putting a floor In the loft, if there is room up there when he is done we are hoping that it might be able to house the givenergy All-in-ones and other solar related electrics, but we shall see., I have a back up plan just incase. We are going for A2A air on/heating and a separate heat pump cylinder, unless any of the EU available units that can cope with both get to the UK in time. We keep uming and ahing over whether to insulate the outside walls internally ! We like the brick look of our bungalow and external insulation will require render but internal will make our rooms smaller ( this has not yet been resolved!). I’m pricing up triple glazing (which might drop to good double glazing if I can’t hit the figure in my head). Only thing we not have even started looking at is a small runaround electric car, just for short hops to local towns, I can’t see us getting to that until we have actually moved in full time, rather than being in the bungalow for holidays and weekends. Hope you are keeping well, best you tube channel for accurate info in an easy to digest way by far, worth every second of time spent watching 👍 Rob ps if you don’t mind once we are at the final booking in a solar installation and about to decide I might run past you the quotes and specifications incase there are anything overpriced or glaringly wrong. From my initial chats I’m finding it hard to get multiple people willing to put in a microinverter based system using local firms so I might end up going to a national company but we shall see. Thanks once more for all the hours of fun. 🙏😎
If this starts working with other brands of inverters I’ll be all over it. I have a SAJ inverter and batteries and unfortunately there’s nothing like this out there that will work with it (to my knowledge)

Hi Gary, looks like a great idea and would certainly relieve the daily chore of looking at agile tariff and changing charge timings etc, however I have a Solis inverter, is there another system which would be compatible?
Hi Peter, yeah the system works well. Worth signing up on the site and letting Richard know that you’d like him to add Solis. He’s shortly to ask people about which inverters/batteries to add next 👍🏻
Solis don't have a cloud API for setting inverter schedules :(

Another vote for Growatt!
GroWatt are the only other manufacturer with an API to set the inverter schedules. I expect we will integrate with them soon, as will Richard.
We support both GivEnergy and Growatt at the moment, will be offering integration with Octopus Agile shortly.
I would certainly look at this if it supported my Lux inverter. The cherry on the cake would be if it support Saving Sessions.
Worth dropping Richard a note on his website. He’s asking for inverter/battery suggestions. Also, DFS is coming 👍🏻
@@GaryDoesSolar I have already done that. He has already replied. Unfortunately Lux doesn’t have a public API. There is one in GitHub that I use and it is excellent. I made £8 on the first Saving Session and £2 on the next one. I miss read the time and only discharged for 20 minutes. It would certainly be interesting to see what Richard does the Saving Sessions. It is easy enough to dump the battery, but you still want enough left to cover the expensive period.
Hi Gary, your videos have been a great help in my selection of my home set up, that is being installed this week, I have the GivEnergy 9.5Kwh battery, GivEnergy Gen 3 5Kwh inverter and a PV set up of 5.7Kwh (Estimated) I am still a little confused on what tariff I should go to, I am currently with Octopus (Variable) and was until seeing this video going to go to the Intelligent Flux tariff, but am I right in thinking that I would need to go to Agile if I used MyEO?
Hi Ian, thanks for your kind words - great to hear my videos have been useful :-) Ok, for MyEO you can be on any Octopus tariff in fact, although if you're on Octopus Flux (and this is not a bad tariff to start with, just to get an idea of how everything works - see part 2 of the strategies for smart tariffs series for details) you probably don't need MyEO - you can manually set up your GE battery. Check out the GivEnergy videos on Tim & Kat's Green Walk for details on how to do that. Would be great to hear how the installation goes. The Octopus Intelligent tariffs will control your inverter. If you want to use MyEO, or our platform, don't use an Intelligent tariff. Agile and Go are both great. Agile is better in summer/if you have a lot to export.
Hi Gary, Install almost complete, just the EPS system to install, manual isolator switch didn't arrive....only one issue I have picked up on is the Invertor is saying I have a 6.4kwh lead acid battery, installer have gone now but I will email and ask why this is. Been watching a few of your videos again today, I think I am probably best going on the Intelligent Flux tariff for now, just so I can get some data and see what my system is doing.@@SolarBatteryScheduler
Is there a similar service available for other types of inverters? I have a LuxPower system
When I was installing solar, most installers had negative stuff to say about Giv Energy so I went with Lux power instead.
Sorry, I don’t know. Maybe others might. On GivEnergy, I’ve had GE equipment for a year now and I have say, it’s very good.

The biggest issue I’ve found with any sort of forward planning is the weather forecast. Solcast lauded as great still gets it wrong enough often enough that it can’t entirely be relied on. If you right sized and don’t have tonnes of spare capacity, it can be quite depressing trying to match charging to tomorrows solar.
Hi Phil, agreed - and the impact of warming climates means it'll just get harder and harder to make accurate forecasts. But... you may not need to worry about the weather forecast at all. See my recent video (part 2 of smart tariff strategies) where charging your battery to 100% every day using off-peak energy over the winter irrespective of the weather seems to provide the best financial return...
Given that export is now more valuable than import… it’s fairly obvious to just charge at cheap rate as much as possible.
You actually have the opposite problem in how flat to make your battery before the cheap rate starts again

I'm not sure what Richard's plans are on that front, but I do know that he's heavily influenced by customer requests. Worth dropping him a note via the MyEO website.

Are you planning to do a video comparing yields and ROI with all three systems you have used so far (no automation and best guess setup, some fine tuning and this system. If you can pick comparable periods of a week or month while you used each it would produce interesting comparative data?
That would be a useful exercise, Mike. Trouble is, the only solution I've tried is MyEO so far. I wish I had more time. I'll certainly be reporting how I get on with MyOE in part 4 of the "strategies for smart tariffs" series...

For the moment, whilst I'm on the Octopus Agile tariff, I've set MyEO to charge my battery to 100%, regardless of the weather, using the cheapest off-peak slots available. And, it's doing a very good job of that over the last few weeks. I'd like to see how it handles erratic Agile rates first though before I start some analysis... 👍

@@GaryDoesSolar have you looked at batpred for hass and givtcp? It's pretty similar to the MyEO tool featured from what I can ascertain. I don't have giv energy kit so don't know for sure.

Hi Gary, this looks very interesting. How does it compare to Intelligent Flux? That tariff let's Octopus takes control of the battery. Which would be more efficient/cost effective in the sunnier period?

@@GaryDoesSolar thanks, I have watched that video. So it seems to me that MyEO is more for the winter (usage < solar), but Octopus Intelligent Flux is best for the summer (usage >= solar).
@@stephenbrooker9670 Yeah, it's an interesting one. Everyone seems to have got into the groove of having a summer and separate winter tariff... And perhaps not surprisingly, given the design of the current tariffs. That said, I've been on Agile (and MyEO) now since October and although I was thinking to switch back to Flux, I'm thinking instead to stay with Agile for the time-being because it's so good! I'll be having a discussion with my Patreon members shortly to see where their heads are at on this - especially for those with EVs given that IOG seems to be good all year round too....

I registered an account but I'm having trouble getting any further as the central pane on the My Energy Optimiser is just a blank white screen. I've switched off all the ad blockers etc. This is on both Firefox and Safari browsers. Can someone confirm that it is something my end please?

I thought there was a 'Home Automation' system for (eg) Agile already on the Givenergy app? My understanding is that it bought electricity at the lowest rates throughout the day.
I thought that too (when I bought the kit over a year ago) but alas, no. I do believe it’s coming, but until then there are third party options.

@@hyweljthomas Thanks. I think Tim was under the impression that smart tariffs were supported given the menu options in the app, but the reality is that (so far) they're not, but that GivEnergy are indeed working to add such support.

Standalone Battery - Hold until Peak Time
Standalone Battery - Eco mode
Solar and Battery
I chose number 1 - I shall report back!

They're the only ones with a cloud API to allow remote control of the inverter. GroWatt is another but it's not as big as Giv.

MyEO, us, home assistant, and lots of techie battery owners are all waiting on other manufacturers to follow suit and open a public cloud API so we can control inverter settings. Until then, GivEnergy for the win!

I have been saying that this is exactly how V2G in a selfplug-in EV should work as a std feature in all EVs.
For 2 years now, including the weather forecasting.
I am a Civil Engineer, Construction, and could see that the nuclear promoters were getting very aggressive about their technology, their central, grid dominating, electricity generation.
The nuclear solution is 80 years old.
It will take decades and decades to build.
It will dominate for 60years to 100years because of its expense.
The nuclear promoters will want government GARRENTEED on cash flows and disaster insurance.
Nuclear is getting aggressive because of this type of renewable technology and EVs.
Nuclear said fossil free EVs will need more electricity, so fossil free nuclear is the answer.
Nuclear electricity sees the EV battery as their way of maintaining steady 24hrs production and surges being managed by the EV big batteries.
If Rooftop renewables become more obviously effective then nuclear shut down, extremely expensive shut down would be facing the government and taxpayers.
It's going to be an interesting future...

Rooftop solar PV and EV big batteries is the only tax free way.
I mean free of future national financial burden, and taxes, with massive extra grid capacity construction.
The grid is fragile because it is expensive.
The most expensive way to distribute energy is electric energy, fossil fuels contain extremely dense energy.
Fossil fuels are cheap after long transport to the consumer.
Nuclear promoters hide this fact for their central generation future growth.
Nuclear promoters say distant renewables uneconomic because of the new transmission grid construction.
Nuclear promoters ignore rooftop PV and EVs batteries as they do not need any extra transmission.
This is a massive advantage, an advantage that nuclear promoters want to block by filling the existing grid with their electricity.
Nuclear promoters want SMRs, Small modular reactors, because individual investors can own their own plant, with government Garrentees.
Taxpayers guarantees.
For the majority of the year.
Some fossil fueled days or weeks in emergency situations in a warming world is 99% better.
If grid transmission is lost, extreme weather or military threat, or maintenance failure, or ?? Nuclear central generation is a disaster.
Nuclear solution will demand government mandating grid connection. Guarantee cash flow and stop electricity bills exploding for the remaining customers.
