One thing, I enjoy about Metroman retiring to go to music makes sense. People have talked about this already, but he choose music since it is the one ability that his powers don’t give him. His powers give him super strength, super speed, flight, and laser vision, yet music is something he can make his own without his powers.

There was a short included on the DVD called "Megamind and the Button of Doom" which covers Megaminds first adventure as a hero. You can find it on youtube. Also there was a Megamind TV series announced a while ago.
One of the most under-appreciated animated films ever made! I love everything about Megamind's character, and how the whole plot of him eventually becoming a hero works! He was never an evil person at heart. He only became what he believed he was destined to based on how everyone viewed him, while having no vendetta against anyone. Eventually he discovers both him and Metro Man were dealing with the same issues, only to realize that fate doesn't decide your purpose. Only you can decide that for yourself! If this movie wasn't released around the same time as Despicable Me, I believe it would've been a bigger success! It is 100% a better movie!
Wait, how was this such a good movie!? Cliched posters sometimes hide such good stuff. I should look into animated films more. Guillermo del Toro served as a creative consultant in the movie, btw. It might explain some of the visual coolness, too. Metro Man was hoping for this outcome and it's pretty sweet that his final act of heroism was giving a chance to this guy who was never given one.
- When Megamind at the start is shouting "FIRE!" to Minion the area behind him flashes white. If you pause it you can see Metro Man. - Hal Stewart is a name that's an amalgamation of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Both are Green Lanterns in the DC universe. - Hal is a Nice Guy(TM) before the term even existed. - The original script had the movie being live-action and toilet humour galore. "Oh, you're a villain alright, just not a super one." "What's the difference?" "PRESENTATION!" Is IMO one of the best lines ever.
28:17 well yeah, the whole point of Hal is that just because you're a hero doesn't mean you get the girl, so Megamind doesn't get a kiss just 'cause he saved Roxanne. XD
Megamind was an all out surprise for me first time watching. I thought for sure it'd be a knock off Pixar thing for kids, so I'm happy to see you guys had the same fun I had with it.
Movie is really underrated for how good the writing is. The world laughed at Hal when he said that there is no Queen of England, but obviously he could tell the future. Simone at 1:00: "It doesn't have minions" Me: Not technically... lol "Minion" I can't remember, but I think this movie got lost with other big movies coming out, so it barely got attention in the theater. This is one of those movies that has gained so much traction years later.
So I was a movie theatre manager for most of the ‘00 and whenever I took my kids to movies we would go down to the front of the screen and dance and the music during the credits.
There's a theory that this movie and Despicable Me originated from the same Spec Script (which for people who don't know is a screenplay premise that is yet to be bought up and produced by a studio) which would explain the similarities - the premise of the villain winning, a side character named Minion/the minions. It's a shame this movie was overshadowed by Despicable Me, I really wish Megamind came out on top, because while I like the first Despicable Me, I love this movie.
funny how that's always how it seems to go. the quality product goes underrated and unnoticed, while the product with better marketing potential boosts to fame. sad really that even when it comes to things like stories the lower quality stuff wins (not saying DM is bad quality, it's still good generally, but in direct comparison to MM it's just not _as_ good) because the competition tragically has nothing to do with the story/product itself, only the ability to advertise and profit. :/ but on the bright side, it creates gems that people get to discover and appreciate even more down the line.
The lackies of supervillains are usually referred to as their minions, so two supervillain movies are of course going to have some twist on that trope.
I really enjoy how metro man didn't return and save the day in the end after it was discovered he was still alive and megamind had to step up and save the city. Really great storyline in this film and of course the soundtrack is unmatched! Shame it didn't get the attention it deserves
George’s tree-climbing fish put me in mind of the quote “I could outrun a shark, but a shark could outswim me, so in a triathlon it would come down to who is the stronger cyclist”
I loved this movie and rewatched it so many times. Really clever and intelligent way to write comedy, with real questions, about how your growing environment determines how you'll turn out later in life, and how it's not set in stone, etc etc. Plus I love all the details in writing characters. Megamind grew up in a prison, and then lived in a secret lair, so he doesn't know what a window is. That type of stuff
I'm GLAD this movie got a weird release and ended up with no sequels-- its one of those films that's absolutely fantastic as a standalone story. I do NOT want a sequel. I love it as it is.
Fun Fact: During the verbal confrontation in the observatory you can see Metro Man behind Megamind for a split second foreshadowing the reveal later in the film!
There is a short that followed this movie. Megamind is trying to adjust to his new role in the city while having to clean up one of his left over evil projects.
Yeah, Megamind launched against Despicable Me with a similar premise (The Incredibles but supervillains), but Despicable Me had the insta-marketing power of the Minions behind it so did far, far better - despite pretty much everyone who sees it preferring Megamind. It's shocking how often two very similar movies will launch against each other (in animation alone, Antz vs A Bug's Life, anyone?).
I think it's great that Metroman, being perfect in almost every way, found himself living a meaningless life only to please others and meet their expectations, and to escape that he picked music, something he absolutely sucks at.
My sequel pitch is to have megamind's parents still be alive and arrive only to find out that megamind was actually sent to take over the planet before their arrival and then he is torn between being a villian to please his parents and his new life as a hero in Metrocity.
undermines the first movie as megaminds parents were never evil, his evil was impressed onto him by being raised in a toxic and abusive environment (prison).
A very underappreciated movie. There's some great quick humour, and the timing on the delivery of many of the lines is really well done. The supporting cast was great with JK Simmonds as the warden and I believe Ben Stiller as Bernard. The timing on 'we're going to die' is great.
Megamind is so awesome.------ I'm over the moon or maybe just the fake observatory that you are reacting to this.------ One of the underrated modern movie classics.------ Megamind, "You're a villain alright, just not a super one.------ Titian, "What makes me different from you. Megamind, "it's all about PRESENTATION"
Megamind was never the type of jerk who hurts you. Not on purpose anyway. He would SEVERELY INCONVENIENCE you any day of the week. He would kick your car across the street without a second thought. He would punch a hole in your house and not feel guilty about it. He would bring your whole day to a screeching halt with his latest scheme just for funsies. But DIRECTLY HURT someone? Never! Not on purpose anyway. Doesn't really stop him from being a jerk though. It just makes him a more sympathetic one.
I realized something. Megamind did kinda the same as Syndrome in Incredibles. But Megamind had success. Both created a monster to beat it and get hero status.
Perhaps, but Syndrome was in it for the adulation. Megamind just wanted to continue to play the game in the only role that he had known. While Syndrome's motivations are purely selfish, Megamind does develop a concern for others, which allows him to become the hero.
That whole presentation scene is, I don't have appropriate words. It's the closest thing I've ever seen to the perfect dramatic entrance. Think about it. Set the humor aside for a moment, give into the drama a little and look at it. First, let's talk about the preceding scenes. The threat is unstoppable. The only power capable of matching it has benched itself, but it points toward another hope. Who refuses it. And walks away. We then enter the darkest hour. The threat has taken the best and most hopeful character in the entire story, and now, even they begin to feel despair. And abandonment. But just before, we got one last promise of hope. So for the whole scene, on top of the despair, on top of the hopelessness, we feel a constantly building sense of frustration! And anticipation. We were right to. Thunder booms, and the unstoppable threat turns to find that, without him even noticing (!), the SKY has been BLOTTED OUT! And this unstoppable, invincible, fallen angel of wrath, floats before a dark storm of lightning and thunder that seemingly fills the whole world. And looks small. Then a voice, filling the air from every direction at once like an enraged GOD! "YOU DARE TO CHALLENGE MEGAMIND!" "this town isn't big enough for two supervillains." And as the visage of the Megamind emerges from the storm, to personally belittle and rain humiliation upon this upstart ant who has managed to offend him, we cut to her. I want to really emphasize this moment. This whole movie, people have looked upon this man with scorn. The only thing he has needed to do to sour the mood, to spread fear and panic, to bring children to tears, is appear. And now, he has appeared again. Grander and greater then ever before. And we turn to look upon the person he might have hurt worst of all. And what do we see? We see hope. We see hope! THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is presentation. I could say more, but I'm gonna cut it here. I hope I got my point across.
I just discovered your Channel with this video, and I am subscribing and going to look through your other reactions and commentaries! I quite liked your reactions to the various parts of this movie, as it has always been a favorite of mine, and am glad to see others enjoying it as well! 💚
They announced last year a sequel series to Megamind for streaming after so long and it will release in the next couple years. I just hope it lives up to the original.
This is a tragically undersung movie. 2010 was a big year for animated movies: Despicable Me was a fellow Dreamworks picture that overshadowed it due to wider appeal due to it being more of a kid’s movie as y’all say, and there was also the other Dreamworks Juggernaut franchises, “How to Train Your Dragon”(the first one), and “Shrek Forever After” (the fourth one). Disney/Pixar also released “Tangled” and “Toy Story 3” that year, and there was also Village Roadshow’s gorgeous “Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga’Hoole”. Sadly, Megamind got lost in the shuffle and buried under all the massive franchises that either originated or continued in that year.
"No one has a public image that shiny without some dirty deeds." While I agree that it's exceptionally rare, Fred Rogers, of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, was every bit the kind soul he appeared to be. I know George, sadly, didn't get to grow up with Mister Rogers, he was _definitely_ on Canadian TV in the 90s so perhaps Simone had the pleasure of knowing him as I did (through the TV, don't be gross).

i realy love that metroman doesnt end being a bad guy, he just wanted to live his life in how own manner, that doesnt make him evil.
This movie is SO underrated, I’m happy you guys are checking it out.
One thing I love about Megamind is it subverts the usual Hero vs Villain dynamic without falling into the trap of "what if hero actually bad??"
One thing, I enjoy about Metroman retiring to go to music makes sense. People have talked about this already, but he choose music since it is the one ability that his powers don’t give him. His powers give him super strength, super speed, flight, and laser vision, yet music is something he can make his own without his powers.
Did you notice how Roxanne's dress slowly went from red to blue hinting her change of feeling towards Megamind?
I need to watch the full version now :0
Edit: I looked at the start and end to see but those are two different dresses not the same one. The red one has black on the top and middle and the blue one just has lace at the top
the scene where he says 'and i love you random citizen' always reminds me of the cyberpunk Keanu reeves 'you're breathtaking'
Keanu moment reminds me of this scene hehe
Props to Dreamworks for making the quote unquote "nuce guy/irl" the villain and calling him out for it
*Simone sees a lack of minions*. “Why are we here? Just to suffer?”
I got to watch this film in the cinema as a kid and when the person said "I love you metro man" it only played out one side of the cinemas speakers I actually thought it was someone in cinema that said it
There was a short included on the DVD called "Megamind and the Button of Doom" which covers Megaminds first adventure as a hero.
Bonus Fun Fact: Hal Stewart is a blend of two Green Lantern's names. Hal Jordan and John Stewart!
Despicable Me definitely won the franchising/merch game, but Megamind far and away won the internet culture game
Animation surprised me a lot with how much depth and heart family or kids stuff ends up having.
how come you're watching this video without having watched megamind first
@@NewsofPE I watch most of the movies Cinebinge watch. It’s a fun way to get to know things I don’t usually watch.
I'm so glad more people are watching this underrated movie.
I, personally, love it way more than Despicable Me
- When Megamind at the start is shouting "FIRE!" to Minion the area behind him flashes white.
"Oh, you're a villain alright, just not a super one."
"What's the difference?"
"PRESENTATION!"
Is IMO one of the best lines ever.
Simone at 1:00: "It doesn't have minions"
Me: Not technically... lol "Minion"
I can't remember, but I think this movie got lost with other big movies coming out, so it barely got attention in the theater. This is one of those movies that has gained so much traction years later.
"Saskatoon's not that green." I live in S'toon, and all I can say is: You're not wrong, but still... Ouch.
This movie really deserved more love when it was released.
Yeah, that was my take at the time....
funny how that's always how it seems to go. the quality product goes underrated and unnoticed, while the product with better marketing potential boosts to fame. sad really that even when it comes to things like stories the lower quality stuff wins (not saying DM is bad quality, it's still good generally, but in direct comparison to MM it's just not _as_ good) because the competition tragically has nothing to do with the story/product itself, only the ability to advertise and profit. :/ but on the bright side, it creates gems that people get to discover and appreciate even more down the line.
The lackies of supervillains are usually referred to as their minions, so two supervillain movies are of course going to have some twist on that trope.
I mean of course, but my point still stands, that's far from the only similarity the two films share.
Just because you are told to be a villain doesn’t mean you have to be one. Everybody has free will and freedom of choice.
It’s funny that you should mention Neil Patrick Harris, because he himself did this same setup as well in Dr. Horrible’s sing along blog.
" Way to go little buddy " is such an awesome line to add in at the end :)
There is a short that followed this movie. Megamind is trying to adjust to his new role in the city while having to clean up one of his left over evil projects.
“His heart is an ocean…that’s inside a bigger ocean”
Quite frankly one of the best takes on Superman ever, imho.
Peacock has a Megamind series planned. "Megamind's guide to defending your city".
A great detail is that when Megamind uses the watch to disguise himself the disguise always has green eyes. Because he has green eyes.
I think it's great that Metroman, being perfect in almost every way, found himself living a meaningless life only to please others and meet their expectations, and to escape that he picked music, something he absolutely sucks at.
@ 22:45 - I'm sorry, but George thinking that was his doorbell cracked me up more than it had any right too...!! 🤣
I love how he said this movie is like 'The Boys for Children' before Tighten even showed up, when he's basically Kid-Friendly Homelander
My sequel pitch is to have megamind's parents still be alive and arrive only to find out that megamind was actually sent to take over the planet before their arrival and then he is torn between being a villian to please his parents and his new life as a hero in Metrocity.
The Saiyan Saga from DBZ then. Honestly probably good material for spoofing there.
undermines the first movie as megaminds parents were never evil, his evil was impressed onto him by being raised in a toxic and abusive environment (prison).

A very underappreciated movie. There's some great quick humour, and the timing on the delivery of many of the lines is really well done.
The supporting cast was great with JK Simmonds as the warden and I believe Ben Stiller as Bernard. The timing on 'we're going to die' is great.
Oh. One thing. I do remember a Megamind short that served as a mini sequal, that showed how things were going after the movie.
i love this movie because it shows perfectly the difference between being good at heart, and just being nice to get what you want.
It just makes him a more sympathetic one.
the LOOK on SIMONE's face when brad pitt started singing 🤣😅😂 CLASSIC! 🤭
Your mention of Neil Patrick Harris as a supervillain reminded me of "Doctor Horrible's Sing-along Blog," in which he played one.
Love that Keanu Reeves had a real life "And I love YOU random citizen!" Moment lol
The difference is that Megamind didn't intend to create a monster, just an adversary.
And at that a hero to the people.
6:57 "Metals can be melted by the heat of _revange!"_
Ah. But revenge is a dish best served _cold._ Has no one ever _told_ you?
But it could easily be reheated in the microwave of evil!
I love the twist when Roxane realizes that it was Megamind instead of Machoman
Was that intro "mmmm Steve" from Flight of the Concords - Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros?
Pretty obscure reference!
"This guy definitely...definitely has a bunch of skeletons inside his closet."
That's what's called foreshadowing. 😆
"YOU DARE TO CHALLENGE MEGAMIND!"
"this town isn't big enough for two supervillains."
And as the visage of the Megamind emerges from the storm, to personally belittle and rain humiliation upon this upstart ant who has managed to offend him, we cut to her.
So happy you enjoyed this! It's one of those movies that will always lift your spirits.
The talented cast of this movie contributed to their characters' dialog.
I was waiting for this one! One of my favorite movies. Unstated is the idea that Villians can also be made depending on their developmental years.
22:45 the “no bitches?” meme originated from here
This is a tragically undersung movie.
I like how in metro man death scene you can actually see him appear behind megamind for a brief moment and statue moves
My love for this film is a reason my daughter has him as the centrepiece of a full tattoo sleeve. It's amazing.
The soundtrack absolutely rocks. 😊
I'm relieved that, unlike some reactors, you didn't stop the movie as soon as the credits began, so you didn't miss the scene with Minion and the real Bernard. I didn't dislike Despicable Me, but I love Megamind so much more.
This holds up well to rewatching, including with commentary.
Megamind doesn't have minions, but it has A Minion >v>
‘Did Steve tell you that perchance?’
26:01 “There is no queen of England.”
“Well-“ (thinking: there is. Or, but now…) “Mmm.”
Loved that reaction. Though even at the time, there WASN’T a queen of England, the English title was destroyed when the title of the United Kingdom was created.
I’m so glad you did this one!! It’s one of my absolute favorite animated movies! And the sound track is amazing 🤩!!
10:30 George - about Hal - "THAT guy's more likely to turn into a super-villain!"
The rest of us: "Weeeeeell... FUNNY you should mention thaaaaat... " 😅
