As a Medical doctor ..... You CANNOT tell on looks alone who the father is. I have seen children who look 100% Filipino but who have a Western father and a mother who was 50% Western. Only DNA testing is legitimate. Secondly, I worked at a clinic where we saw loads of pregnant young women with Western older men ..... At least 80% of them admitted to us on the quiet that the Western partner is not the father but doesn't know. Be careful guys.
To all intents, this lady is the "common law wife" but sadly, the Philippines doesn't recognise that. It is sad that he didn't leave a formal Will which is exactly what he should have done. If you are with a lady like this, put your future intentions in writing. The other big difficulty is that any money he did have, or widows pension, goes to his actual wife. Now, she should be able to legally claim the costs of the hospital back from his estate.

Old men go to these countries to take advantage of young poor women. They know the poor women would put up with them for financial support. They don't want anything but money. They think all white men have money. They do have more than the native people. Those old men couldn't get a young woman from their own country. I find these stories amusing. They all get what they pay for. I don't even believe Mercy would have been there if he was broke. She's upset because she thought she would get something after he died. I don't feel sorry for her. Videos like this serve as a good reminder about the importance of having something in writing (i.e. a will) to serve as a guide to settling your matters after you pass away. If Frank could afford to give an allowance of ~$900/mo., he certainly could afford a 1-2 hour consultation with a lawyer in the Philippines which would've been no more than $50 and could have prevented a lot of the aftermath that's been endured. Like the saying goes, "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

Before Frank started worrying about the welfare of a kid that wasn't his (and the consequent poor decisions from this), he should have been making sure that his own backyard was in order ie Wills, Power of Attorneys, Health, Plan B if the kids in the US don't want any part of his life, making sure Mercy has the adequate resources to deal with his eventual demise etc etc. I hope she can put this behind her and find happiness again.

Poor Mercy. I hate that she had to go through all that, especially with people looking down at her when she was simply trying to do the right thing.

People in the US have no heart. My story was repeated by all my friends. My family is ruthless and without a heart. Self centered. I love myself too much and chose to be as far away from them as possible for my well being. Her story is so sad, and so common when family are from US. Just an FYI on divorce between a Filipina and a U.S. citizen married in the PI. My wife is a Filipina who married a U.S. citizen in 2004 in the Philippines and he brought her and her two young children to the U.S.. He divorced her in 2008 because he wanted her to send her young children back to the PI and she refused. During the years they was married she became a U.S. citizen. After divorce she was penniless and in a strange country (strange because he controlled her every move so she had no friends and didn’t know how to survive) with 2 young kids and somehow managed to scratch and fight and made a life for her and her kids in the U.S..
As you know, Filipinas can be a very very determined woman when it comes to their children and family. From 2008 until I met her in 2019 she somehow managed to put a roof over their heads, send her kids through school and onto college. And, she also managed to support her now 85 year old mother back in the PI and also help support her siblings and even put her siblings kids through university in the PI. All this time she never did anything for herself. Never ventured more than a few miles between her home and work all those years and just worked and worked and worked.
And then we met and over time we decided to marry. But because of her deep roots to Filipino culture, she wouldn’t because she still considered herself married under Philippines law. I told her that it would be ok because she was considered divorced in the U.S. but she still insisted that we couldn’t because of being married in the PI and they don’t have divorce there. So I did some research and found that if a Filipina/Filipino is married to a foreigner in the Philippines and later the foreigner initiates and files for a divorce in the foreigners home country and the divorce is granted, that the Philippines will recognize the divorce and consider the Filipina single again.
There are rules/laws that apply. It is critical that it’s the foreigner who initiates and files for the divorce in his own country and the divorce is granted and recognized in his home country. If it’s the Filipina that files for divorce then it’s not recognized in the PI. Then the Filipina has to get the legal divorce papers apostilled in the country of divorce and bring them to the PI and have them registered there and then the divorce will be recognized in the PI and she can then get married again in the PI. I know this because we did it and got married in Mabalacat, Pampanga in the PI in 2022. We didn’t even need the services of an attorney in the PI to facilitate things. As far as the Philippines is concerned, my wife was widowed at age 23 in 2001 (her Filipino husband was electrocuted when a wire fell to the ground during a storm and he got off his bike to move the wire off the road) and is now married to me. She’s now 47 and still looks like she’s 30 and treats me like her king. Life is good for me at age 67.

This podcast brought me to tears... I feel such sorrow for this precious woman, who survived her lover. All of you x-pats out there, please give power of attorney to your significant other (married or not) with instructions on what to do in case of death or serious injury. Also make a simple will and testament so that your estate can be handled without much effort. Also, setup beneficiaries on all your accounts to avoid probate. This is an example of a good woman who wasn't taken care of - a simple mistake that is very common. A painful experience that no one wants to go through. God Bless you.

Frank could have gone to an attorney--Very cost reasonable in Philippines, given power of attorney to Mercy for health affairs and making sure he got cremated once he passed. Frank also could have put his assets in a Trust with Mercy being beneficiary-to avoid costs and probate. Some Very smart choices every ex-pat needs to have in place.
Mercy seems to have kept her kind heart in all of this.

Hopefully there will be people like Frank that watch this video, and decide to get their affairs in order. We all like to avoid the thought of demise and push off things like the Will. Hopefully she has learned from this hard lesson to not get romantically involved again with another married man because this rarely if ever turns out well.

Absolutely true. Plus, 3 adult children who do not live together needed to communicate with one another in a time zone that complicated matters. For poor Mercy, it must have been horrible, but the children back in the US might have been working as fast as they could. Been there done that. Frank, Frank, Frank, how could you have been so intelligent, yet so irresponsible. Sad sad state of affairs but please, try not to denigrate the adult children. They may not be as awful as it seems. Of course, they may also be awful, hard to know for sure. But if they didn't have a good relationship with Frank, they may not have understood how the hospital system works, the importance of taking care of the body quickly, etc. Now they know. Poor Mercy, very sad all the way around.

Power of attorney Paul ceases upon death. There is a different set of laws which come in play when someone dies. Probate laws and they vary country to country. Probate laws are designed to protect the assets of the deceased. In the eyes of law this mistress as you describe has no legal power, because she aint either exector of a will neither classed as a next of Kin.

It's called a living will. I can assign a perfect stranger to be executor, beneficiary, POA, all of it. If I am estranged from my wife, or more accurately she from me as in abandonment, she is entitled to nothing. His venue would be the USA but could be here if he transfered assets here and filed abandonment charges on his Filipina wife as well as adultery and and annulment will be issued. I'm dealing with this very thing now.

You could see how she Loved him and cared for him not only in his life but i his passing. I hope his kids see this and realize Mercy should be taken care of and not just left responsible for paying for his hospital bill which has to be paid before they would release any paperwork or his body. To any Americans watching , don’t shy away, from prostate surgery, considering you can repatriate, and there are really sophisticated treatments that are less likely to render one impotent! Also, I understand medicare pays for the pump, in worst case outcomes!
Also, don’t die without heeding Paul’s advice, re after death directives! I would hope none of us , on seeing Mercy’s pain, would wish that on our own significant others!
