It may not look like much of a difference, but the mouth of a catch can (or small plastic storage cup) being wider than the bottom makes a large error in measurement, making it look like more water is being delivered that is actually delivered.
What? My sprinklers run for 10 minutes at 4:00 am. I find 1/2 inch of water in a container. In the hot weather my lawn is still turning brown. My sprinklers turn on at that time 4 days of the week.

Go get a dethacher (power rake). That will solve all your problems.
I know this is two years later, but one deep watering once a week is better than 4 days a week.
