Thanks! Really liked your improvements. Simple and very practical. I bought several Rigid tool boxes recently and saw immediately there was room for improvement and turned to UA-cam. One case had a handy tray, but a single space underneath allowing tools to slide around. I cut small luan strips temporarily to serve as dividers. My wife pointed out that one of the tops, which had a grid-work of compartments for strength for the top, could also serve as storage for small tools or hardware if Rigid provided a clear snap on internal lid to keep everything in place. I know they sell a case with a clear lid, I bought it. However, I will be returning it. The clear top grabbed my attention, but when I got it home it lost it’s appeal. I will now purchase the crate in your video. I also plan on duplicating some of your improvements. Rigid should embrace some of your ideas and give you the credit or at least some free stuff IMHO.
Neat ideas, I will be copying some of them. I use the ridged system extensively and have used the rolling dolley hack, chopsaw table and made a padded seat cushion. My next hacks will be creating a base for a wet and dry vacuum and also a base for a small HP all in one printer. One thing I can't find in the UK is the clear top organiser which is a pity because I would probably buy 5 or six, however I did discover that you can slot a number of organisers into the rolling box. My wish list includes a hard bottom tool bag that would clip to the system and maybe a Unit with 2 or 3 horizontal drawers.
I really hope ridgid is paying attention to people like you. They could really compete against Pack-out with a few more options (bags, drawers, dolly base, etc.)
Haha, I don't always work alone... But I also leave one tape at my cut station, use the other for measuring, and lose the other one. 😉 As for knives. Can you really have too many knives???
👍 I have since moved to packout, but I did the same thing with the packout crate. I just can't find a better solution for all the hand tools than an open top tote.
What I like is u could do all this WITHOUT drilling any holes in the crate. Press brake the aluminum toplate to conform around the lip of the crate. Use screws and washers to go through the aluminum side, then between the slots in the crate and into the wooden block.
Love what you've done with the crate. Capital idea on how to install the aluminum inside of it. Can't help but wonder about attaching a wide carrying strap down the middle to help move it around easier with one hand but wonder if that would get in the way when trying to get the tools from inside the bottom.
Thanks, I never thought of a strap but yeah, you could clip them onto the side latches. My box would be crazy uncomfortable to carry like that though because of it's weight.
Most people that don't work in the trades might say your OCD. IF you work remodeling and do multiple trades, and repairs you quickly realize that no organization means wasted time looking for tools AND wasted money $$. . Organizing just plain makes the job easier. I chose the Rigid tool box system because they are more simple and stack easier. They're better when you have to go up and down stairs you just carry the rolling tool box first, then carry the others like suit cases and just quickly put on top of the rolling box. The Milwaukee system just takes longer you kind of have to slide them in. I returned the Milwaukee, ,sorry Milwaukee. Sometimes sturdy, and simple works better. 👍
Yep, simple, sturdy AND cheaper. $98 for the kit every holiday sure beats $200! I just hope Ridgid develops some drawer boxes and additional cases like Milwaukee. They just came out with a 28" rolling box that is compatible with the system. Interested to see that in person. None at my local HD yet.

Well here is the situation....I have a 16' trailer with all my tooling in it to do remodeling. Sometimes, depending on the job it is impractical to drag the trailer with me. This is the reason that I got these boxes. They are really good and sturdy for sure. The issue now is that I keep my regular hand tools and cordless tools in them to be ready to be mobile without the trailer. To keep things organized I typically keep them attached together. This is where my failure comes in. The problem is that I routinely have to take all the boxes apart to do work and have all the boxes laying around in the trailer......it's turned into a pain in the *** to get to my regular tools.....🙄😄😄😄
Yes, people don't understand the work it takes to keep a trailer organized. I have reorganized my trailer 5 times over the last 4 years to get it to a layout that works for me. I have seriously considered moving to a Sprinter style van, but I just can't give up having all of my tools with me. @@rrf482012 Actually one of the advantages of the Ridged Pro Line vs most of the others, is you can get to tools in the stack without taking the stack apart. You just make sure all the boxes are locked but the one you want to access, and lift up on the box you want. Doesn't work for bottom (wheeled) box and could be heavy lifting it up if the upper boxes are filled with tools. But I really like this ability, over some of the other solutions.
I've got an Occidental tool belt and harness. I don't use the harness, but the belt is great. I bought it used off Craigslist from a guy in Alaska (I'm in Texas). It should outlast me.
It's so darn heavy I don't think I could carry it one handed, lol. The side flip out clasps work well for carrying it over to set on the rolling tool box though.
Yeah good idea. However, the biggest problem I've found with my design is that the long wall with the screwdriver plate, is too heavy and so that wall is slowly bending inwards. It needs some "rigid" reinforcing, maybe another metal plate on the outside so that it doesn't bend inwardly.
Really love the system. The lack of options can turn some people off. But if you fabricated stuff like this you’d save so much compared to Packout or Tough System.
Yeah, I really hope they suddenly spurt out some more options, but every time I look at all the parts that can break on the DeWalt and the price of the Milwaukee, I just remind myself the rigid is good enough.
Update , Rigid made the drawers !! They are too heavy, they need smaller and or 1 drawer . Im thinking half the size and weight to fit in the middle of your rolling set-up.
Yeah, I finally got into Packout and then about 8 months later Ridgid announced the drawer and other boxes. But I'm happy with Packout. I have the cabinet at the base, drawer box and then a crate on top. I don't have to unstack anything to get to everything. I would like one single deep drawer instead of the cabinet, but I can fit the roofing nailer and a circular saw in the cabinet so it works. Drawers have really made everything simpler, but they are heavy so I wouldn't use them if I couldn't roll everything around (stairs are no fun).
Since U make more money in efficiency at the jobsite & lose efficiency packing & unpacking, this is a great solution because is ready to work on arrival.
Yeah, I find that space is best utilized when hand tools are vertical. I've tried drawers and other solutions, but nothing beats an open top crate that keeps everything readily available. Problem is that nothing else can be stacked on top, but you can't have everything!
Rigid lost me after they came out with their toolbox with drawers and made it a middle box and not a bottom box with wheels and priced it at $130. Im not going to buy a glorified milk crate for $40 if I have to modify it to hold what it was supposed to be designed to hold--TOOLS! 😂

Just a thought. U could probably fashion a handle to bridge the top. Kinda like an open tool bag carrier.

You guys would probably benefit greatly from a 3d printer; probably more than you realize.
