One interesting factoid this documentary missed regarding Jean Harlow's illness and death is that, when Harlow originally fell ill, her doctor diagnosed her with, and was treating her for, an inflamed gall bladder.
It wasn't until Gable visited Harlow in the hospital, and mentioned to another doctor that her breath smelled of urine, that they realized she was suffering from kidney failure in the advanced stages, which she ultimately succumbed to a day or two later. Tragically, she had been misdiagnosed by her original doctor. So Gable can be credited with having helped with Harlow's diagnosis.
[The rest of this is a digression into Harlow's story. Apologies if it is not germane.]
Harlow's mother was a Christian Scientist and prevented Harlow from receiving medical care for a week after she collapsed on a movie set.
So you can blame the mother, or you can blame the doctor, but in those days, there really was no known cure or treatment for Harlow's illness. It was inevitably going to prove fatal.
Her kidneys were damaged by scarlet fever when she was a child and, as a result, she suffered from poor health for the rest of her life.

@@Roz-y2d Well, I just read a very long BuzzFeed article, and he did rape her by coming into her sleeping compartment and not taking no for an answer. Like too many men, his ego didn't allow him to consider the possibility that just because a woman is flirting with him doesn't mean she wants to have sex with him. To play devil's advocate, though, his reputation was known far and wide, and Ms. Young had been able to flirt with other men without consequences. She was possibly too naive to see how wrapped up he was in himself, that he would think _of course_ she must want him, because in his eyes, _every woman_ wanted him.
That being said, it doesn't take away from his stance on racial inequality. Perhaps if he were alive today, he would understand that no really means no.

Try looking up the little Ms. Goody 2 Shoes Loretta Young. She was already married AND divorced by 18.
She at 20, had just finished making the film "Man's Castle" in 1933 with the 33 year old married Spencer Tracy and had an affair with him until 1934 when he dumped her.
She began "Call of the Wild" in 1935 and an affair with the 34 year old married Gable and after filming, he ALSO dumped her.
She purposely got pregnant, thinking Gable would marry her, but with her reputation, no man wanted to be tied to a Hollywood wh*re.
Gable had NO problem with finding a bed partner of either gender.
Hollywood had a way of hiding a person's history and making sure it's star's remained "Wholesome" in the public eye. She thought Gable would marry her if she got pregnant, he (probably thought she was faking, he couldn't be sure it was his, who knows his reason) so she claimed he raped her.
Before she died, she had written her biography but gave her writer explicit directions to ONLY release the book AFTER her death.
In her book "Forever Young" she stated that she and Gable DID have an affair. She had always refused to answer any questions regarding Gable, but finally in 2000 the truth came out.
      She LIED for 65 YEARS!!!

Many think she was the true love of his life as well and if Carole had lived, she probably would have had enough and left him. The problem with Clark & Joan from what I've read over the years is they were too alike which is why they could only be together here and there and not actually have a proper relationship.

This account of Gable is almost identical to another several months ago. In fact both of these don't mention his love affair with actress Loretta Young while they were filming The Call of the Wild. They had a love child, Judy Lewis. Gable was married at the time of Lewis's conception, and Young concealed her pregnancy to avoid scandal. Young placed her for adoption and some time later, adopted her to conceal the truth from the public. Judy only met Gable once and was unaware he was her father. Judy Gable did not learn that Gable was her father till she was 31 years old. Your "research' skills and credibility really suffer here.

    Clarke Gable was a serial-gigalo, serial-adulterer, date-rapist & deadbeat-dad.
One can assume that he had little respect, or genuine liking for women.
Carol Lombard may well have been the "love of his life", but that didn't change Gable's patterns of behaviour. Lombard was rushing home to confront Gable about his latest (rumoured) affair when she & others died in the plane crash.
