The Unholy follows Alice, a young hearing-impaired girl who, after a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary, is inexplicably able to hear, speak and heal the sick. As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) hoping to revive his career visits the small New England town to investigate. When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister. The Unholy is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Evan Spiliotopoulos, written for the screen and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos, and is based upon James Herbert’s best-selling book Shrine.

It was quite a good movie, great tension buildup and lots of creepy moments. Also the acting of Jeffrey Dean Morgan is superb as always. Decent horror/thriller.

Just watched it today, I thought it'll be another shitty horror movie that isn't scary but this one is GOOD! The jumpscares are actually scary and the storyline is actually really good. People who didn't like this movie probably never liked the concept. If you're planning to watching it, the movie is worth your time. Movie rating 10/10.

Saw this movie while cooking dinner for my dad and I nearly burned dinner. This movie was awesome., I could not stop watching it. The trailer could have been a minute shorter, but it does not spoil as much of the movie as it seems. It's actually lacking a lot of context which make the scenes better. It only really spoils as much as the title does. That being said I would have probably gone with a different title.

Ok so now that I've seen the movie, here's what you need to know. The concept and plot is original and unique and it has the makings of a great movie within the spiritual horror genre. However, the acting and direction are abhorrent. Overall, I'm glad I watched it, but it could have been so much better with a bit more effort on the part of the actors and director. JDM was especially disappointing because I know he can do better than this. Again, it's worth a watch, but it falls short of it's potential.
ETA: Know also that I have high standards. The average viewer may not agree.

Watched this last night, it was fairly shit. The demon is not scary in any way and seems dull as an enemy. I really liked the feel of the film though and nothing wrong with the cast. More needed to happen. It seemed like they were going with scary and got nothing more than thriller if that.

This movie trailer has to be one of the worst edits of all time. Why would you literally show the demon/evil spirit some many times??? Literally gives away any suspense. Could have hinted at it throughout the second half of the trailer and seen it briefly at the very end. The movie looked really good.

I see your point and it could make or break the trailer but IT actually showed Pennywise and The Conjuring showed Valak many times through actual scenes and through visions/nightmares of the protagonists. So I dont see anything wrong with that.

While this demon seems like a background presence that gets revealed more and more throughout the movie and appears much later, yet it's revealed here unclimactically and like a B-movie monster. So he's got a point.

This is like a Supernatural spin-off with John Winchester.
This movie wasn't really as bad as I expected it to be except the ending. It's like drably filmed just to "end" the story. If it had exciting plots, this could've been really good. One thing I liked about it, it was not overly done. I mean how the faith and horror were presented.
True I think playing the "take me to church" background in the calmer scenes would add for depth.

End was actually meaningful. It showed that the lead actor even after knowing that it's not the God that does the miracles asks for a miracle to happen. Thereby putting the faith in the devil and giving it a new life. That's why angel Mary is crying in the last frame.

well, I thought it was a great movie with a nod to classic horror movies.
It was exactly what I expected and I wish it had lasted longer with a few extra special effects because they are a bit thin now.

We just watched last night and please guys don't watch the trailer or just peek on few seconds. I just read the comments how good this movie and I really thank them for saying it.. I really love this movie! It's not the usual horror or religious/ suspense thriller movie. There's a good plot of the story, and how this movie shows you what evil does and choosing where to place your faith. You won't regret watching it if youre not a fan of common Horror movies with common plots and predicted ways to scare.
Can't wait for the sequel for The Nun to team up with Mary and fight the forces of good....lol

I just watched this last night. I thought it was a really good movie. I really liked the story about Mary. If you have a decent surround sound system man this sound mix rocks, great use of the surrounds.

Although, some informations were wrong about the three shepherds : 2/3 died but not the same year the “miracle” happened. Francisco died on April 1919 and Jacinta February 1920, both because of the influenza pandemic.
I watched "american gods " and it has this similar concept of your belief in an entity , your faith in it gives it power and keeps it " alive"
Just thought it was interesting: we are a basically creating our "gods" and keeping them alive by believing in them through prayers for example. A cool concept

For the past decades, there had been stories about statue of Mary shedding blood tears in Philippines, south korea, Mexico etc. Some were deceived, while many perceive it as the demon's trick. This girl in the movie reminds me of Julia Kim, a south korean lady who proclaimed visit from God and perform miracles which was very controversial.
Jesus said "this evil and adulterous generation wants to see signs and miracles".

Seen the film (it`s ok , nothing outstanding) the James Herbert book - Shrine (which i`m reading for the frist time at the moment) is slow in places but so much more....
Finally a promising horror movie. Yes there maybe a few cheap jump scares and cgi may not be the best but it still looks way much better than the recent horror movies. Also, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is more than enough for me to make me wanna watch this movie :3

Most horror movies' symbolism is as subtle and deep as brick to the face, until now there's probably amount of Western movies can be counted with fingers of two hands which even goes as close as the first 3 Silent Hill games by the original Team Silent, even the "adapted" Silent Hill movies along with Western-developed Silent Hill games are as atrocious and failing to even understand the substance of the OG game trilogy
One of said movies to rival OG trilogy SH games also includes Mandy (2018), but it's more of indie-produced Western movies and gets closer to thriller genre with surreal imagery than of conventional horror movie genre
@@ohamatchhams yes, most of horror subtle references are pretty good, nothing can compare to horror symbolism, though Hollywood mostly ruin it by cliché' premise, hehe
