  • When you first see the stunning interior of St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco), you are in awe of the eight centuries of golden mosaics. In fact, there are over 85,000 square feet of mosaics. When you look up, you will see the five main cupolas or domes which are also richly decorated with these religious mosaics, but when you look down, you will also see the beautiful intricate marble inlaid floor. When you visit the St. Mark's Basilica Treasury (8:20), you will find hundreds of gold and silver relics, mostly taken from Constantinople in 1204 after the Fourth Crusade. After we take a tour of the inside, we will also see the magnificent exterior of the basilica (14:24), and learn about it's history as well. No visit to Venice, Italy is complete without visiting St. Mark's Basilica!

I just came across your video. Very well done. I’m preparing for a trip to Venice right now and was hoping to get some great shots in the basilica. Did you have to get special permission to film inside? How did you get such great footage?

I don't know what the rules are now, but let's just say that if you film or take photos, make sure no security guards or church employees are watching you.

@@AndysAwesomeAdventures Hahahaha. Thanks Andy. I guess I won’t be walking through with a 360 camera. Maybe I’ll look into those spy glasses. 😅

Or you can stand behind a pillar, where it's harder for anyone to see you.

The cathedral is a work of art..although i do harbor issues with the exterior...just...maybe too much? But the interior... almost purely Byzantine and we have an echo of how those great Eastern Roman cathedrals that it is modelled on once looked. Great video!

The entire building is a copy of the Apostoles temple of constantinople. Inside and outside. But after they sacrilege byzantion, they exposed all stolen things in there.

The only way to fully grasp the beauty of the Basilica is to attend the sunday mass with the choir and all the lights switched on! That is quite an experience!

At 11:50, you write that Trebizond is modern day Crimea: This is not correct. The city of Trabzon, historically known as Trebizond, is a city on the Black Sea coast of today's northeastern Turkey. The city of Trabzon was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond between 1204 and 1461. The Empire of Trebizond uled over a part of modern day Crimea.
Still, Trebizond is the city of Trebizond/ Trabzon in this context. It is good to check the details.

At least you can give a glimpse at medieval constantinople, in that church, since almost everything is stolen from there by the Venetians. And medieval constantinople is not there anymore, since Venetians and after ottoman turks, destroyed it.
