As young kid I saw them at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Puerto Rico with Saga and Glass Moon. Unforgettable show. Forever in my heart. Shootin Stah! Da P8NTRMAN 🎨
I dont have a recording but I've seen them live in concert in near Carbondale Illinois 1988-1989 with Steppenwolf and Rainbow best concert of my life hands down , I will never forget it.. I've seen David Lee Roth with Steve Vai , Cinderella , Charlie Daniels , Hank , Williams Jr, REO Speedwagon , Cinderella , Idk they were the best my opinion ..
They were the first act signed to the Virgin label. My question is, would an established label have done a better job of promoting them? I'm from the same area as they are. I've been a fan since 1971 or so. MacLaine is not Van's real real last name. An early version of the band was a retro 50's act called The Shooting Stars, building on the popularity of Sha NaNa after Woodstock. And occasionally, with The Galaxies, a dance outfit that was part of the fun.
Loved it then, absolutely love it now. If I die tomorrow, thank you Shooting Star. I'm so glad I took this Last Chance to listen to such an awesome tune. I'll miss it.
Shooting Star Masterpiece ! I'm 61 now and i recall when this was a rock radio hit on 101 KLOL. What a great time to be alive! God Bless You and Thank you for your positive message fir tgen and today! ROCK ON !!! 😎
Saw Shooting Star on the Hang on For Your Life tour in A little Club Called The Old Waldorf in San Francisco This Band simply tore the place down to me The Greatest unknown Band of all 🤘🤘🤘
people are sheep. if the media is not telling you to listen to it, they dont know it exists. they are not real music fans, they just like some music. You have to go out and "find" music. im thankful that we have...
Someone on a prog rock page asked to name songs that were progressive rock by an artist/artists that would otherwise not be considered prog rockers. I listed this song. Truly a master work.
The lead singer seemed to have retained his vocal cords. This is 19 years after they hit it big and this video is 19 years old so who knows now. Among young people in the st louis area back in the early 80's they were greatly admired!! Summer of 2020 I was heading to a casino, one of the very few open, and my lady friend had it on a classic rock station in NE Mo and last chance came on when we stopped to get a soda. It was like a friggin ghost stepped into the car! I enjoyed the hell out of it!!!! She didn't understand tho. She was a Yuper (michigan upper peninsula) and never heard of S S. In 89/90 I was so burned out on classic rock and started listening to less than mainstream rock. Some raw like punk, some just a different influence than what was conventional. As soon as the seattle sound threw their hat in the ring we had a full blown alternative revolution on our hands. By 97/98 it had wound down to a rather weak hash of mainstream sounding music like marcy playground, foo fighters, ben folds five, goo goo dolls, etc. I was maturing a bit and went to old classic country and news talk radio. Still do today. But it was a real nice blast from the past to pick up on the old jams and I had to jump on here to listen to the other hits S S had put out back in the day. What great times we had back then!!! Listening to Triump is an equal treat!! If I recall correctly Shooting Star toured with Triumph. Both got alot of airplay during that same early 80's era. ROCK ON!!!✊✊✊
Saw them with three high school friends in 1976-1977 at the old shelter house and lake at 95th and Metcalf! What a great night as the four of us were sitting on fence behind band with a fifth of Schnapp's chased with suds and violin player egging us on as they were rocking it good and hard and we were just as loud! Soon, the whole place was rocking, and noise complaints were announced, but they, and us weren't stopping! Of course being from the "Dotte", we were ready to rock and man did they- and us! Always wondered if Any members remember that as the place was not vocal- until we showed up and the place went full blown top performance concert! Thanks for the great memories-Jim S.
So many memories... Also from the "dotte" Shooting Star was my go-to when I was bout to blast off 🚀. Grew up in the Parker Elementary school district. Mom moved to 95th street by the sun fresh right down the street from the mall. Left me and my brother the house in the hood. Some of the best times! We survived. Concerts ky102 blowouts at the state drive in. Indian springs living like it was my chance. Still drinks from that well . Rock on
I love this saw them at Riverfest In St Paul Mn 1985. My view was from atop a garbage truck . It was a big Festival and I was part of the clean up crew . Loved that Memory .
There is never been a song like this that captures everything. The musicians are spot-on. This song can give you hope and get you off your ass and do something about it. It's not called last chance for any other reason. Put on your headphones, crank it up and just listen to that studio version.
I have always loved this song for both it's lyrics and the excellent interplay between these Musicians. I think it will always stand the test of time. Truly it's ear candy!
For who just can’t understand why this band didn’t get the attention it should have…it takes more than sheer talent as they can show even here. Performing live concerts and relying on albums to control your life can be very difficult especially if you notice your gifts starting to thin out. Our voice is precious. Care for it. I’ve been there where it failed me and those who I was trying to bless with it.
I grew up with this band. I never knew them, but attended their shows when I was in junior high, and the core members were graduating high school. Van, the lead guitarist, is/was a really shy guy that shed it on stage. Shred it, too. I just wanted to add a little bit. Cheers!
Kansas City here, actually Bonner Springs, saw them probably late 70s early 80s, Wyandotte County Fairground, in the rodeo arena, several times Rockfest, at Smithville Lake.
I can't understand why this band / song is so underrated. This song has everything a song needs. The temple changes are just phenomenal. This did get a lot of radio play in Chicago back when it came out, and I just don't understand how this band didn't get the recognition it deserved.
I was in Houston when You've Got What I Need became a hit. There was a concert there that included: Shooting Star, Cheap Trick and I may be wrong on the headliner, may have been The Eagles! Too bad I couldn't make it there.
Saw them open for Jefferson Starship in 1982 while attending the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. This was a memorable concert, and a homecoming for Shooting Star, as they hailed from Kansas City. Great Band!
In my early teens I got to see them live quite often in several Kansas City concerts. The most memorable was the 2nd Annual Rockfest, which has blown up a million times more extravagant
gaston0770 Led Was my favorite band but Last Chance in my opinion better than Stairway to Heaven because it jams from the start and intensifies into individual killer solos whereas Stair way to Heaven was a ballad that started slow and gradually builded ending in a jam. Last Chance is a constant jam from start to finish with no let up. It's ear candy all the way through.
I have seen, throughout the years, Shooting Star with Gary & Ronnie on vocals and Kansas with Steve & John on vocals. I think that Shooting Stars music was a different kind of power than Kansas. Because both bands had violins it gave them a different flavor than a lot of the other hit bands in those years. I appreciate each band for the memories they keep in my mind & soul! Rock On~
An absolute masterpiece. Should be up there with all the "meh" rock anthems like stairway to heaven etc... this song makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Music rarely gets better than this.
Saw them in concert in Waukesha Wi at the fairgrounds as a teen. I was in the third row and loved every moment on the concert even though there was a mike failure.
Back in 1980, Shooting Star opened for Jefferson Starship at old Vets Auditorium in Des Moines Iowa. When they did this song to close thier set, Gary West ran up into the balcony where the kettle drums were in one of the entrance to the auditorium and proceeded to have about a 5 minute drum duel with Steve Thomas. It was so damn electric. Thank you sooooo much for uploading one of my favorite songs.
When I read your comment, it brought me back to my childhood. I too grew up in San Jose and remember listening to 98.5 KOME and 92.3 KSJO during this time.
Great song! One of my all-time favorites. Looks like my old friend Rod Lincoln sitting in on drums for them. I saw them in the late 70's at the Missouri Theatre in St. Joseph, MO. One of my first concerts and I fell in love with them. Still have them on my ipod. Thanks for posting them here.
This video is depressing. I saw these guys open for a Foghat/BOC gig 23+ years ago at the Cap Centre in DC and they blew us all away. Didn't know then or of them and - wow, I wish you guys could have seen them then. Something special...
One of an all time best songs they did as well as Tonight and Breakout. I remember them playing at One Block West . I wanted to go see but I was 14. lol I did enjoy seeing Pete Mitchell perform at Back Stage in Overland Park in 88...and KY-102's Day In the Park at Smithville Lake in 89!)@May Shooting Rock On as one my favorite bands that I still to this day feel were better than others ever noticed.
At the checkout line several years ago at Hyvee grocery store commenting on the cool classic rock music they were playing. The young guy bagging my groceries then sounds out saying that his father is the bass guitarist for this band.
Took snare drum lessons from rod Lincoln at lanhams in st joe. He was a cool dude. He played in local band Myth in mid to late 70's.i made it my goal to play as good as him. I definitely made it, imo.. love Shooting Star!!
I saw them open for Heart in the 80's, I actually won the album Silent Scream from a radio station. I've been a fan ever since. Highly underrated band. A rock violin, I mean come on.
Last Chance has been one of my favorite songs since i was in High school! There is no political bs! It is all about personal responsibility and controlling your own destiny! Sadly, I just liked the song... the lyrics didn't sink in until much later. Thank you for the gift of a lifetime favorite song!
Harrison Wheeler- (Sadly, I just liked the song...) Nothing to be sad about my friend, I have listened to a lot of rock in my time but this to me is timeless, was born in '66 and still come back to this from time to time. Baby of the family so grew up with Zepplin , Jimmy, guess who, Floyd,Cream, sooo many but always remember this music from the 80's. April Wine.. will leave you with that.
i loved Kansas and shooting star and i never thought they were the same.. in fact this song is something people should live by.. and they had several other great songs.. if u bought their albums and listened u would know..
As young kid I saw them at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Puerto Rico with Saga and Glass Moon. Unforgettable show. Forever in my heart. Shootin Stah!
Da P8NTRMAN 🎨
This song, in my opinion, is one of the most under-rated rock songs ever.
What a song!! does anybody have any other live show from them? audio or dvd? any trades?
That's an understatement! :D:D i loved this song when it first came out and it is only better and MORE relevant with time.
Like bohemian rhapsody
This and "Who's Behind the Door" by ZEBRA :)
Shooting star should have been as big as Kansas was. Such a phenomenal band that was the soundtrack to my life in the 80s through today.
They were the first act signed to the Virgin label.
My question is, would an established label have done a better job of promoting them?
I'm from the same area as they are. I've been a fan since 1971 or so. MacLaine is not Van's real real last name. They sound similar to Kansas.. especially with the violin
@@jeacaklotom Very much so...HAD to be an influence.
I agree 💯 and they actually have allot of great songs like Running Wild In The Streets its just as good as this song
🤘🤘The Rock of Shooting Star will live Forever.🤘🤘
Loved it then, absolutely love it now. If I die tomorrow, thank you Shooting Star. I'm so glad I took this Last Chance to listen to such an awesome tune. I'll miss it.
Shooting Star Masterpiece ! I'm 61 now and i recall when this was a rock radio hit on 101 KLOL. What a great time to be alive! God Bless You and Thank you for your positive message fir tgen and today! ROCK ON !!! 😎
This was definitely on one of my many workout tapes almost 40 years ago!!! It is still a CLASSIC to this day!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Saw Shooting Star on the Hang on For Your Life tour in A little Club Called The Old Waldorf in San Francisco This Band simply tore the place down to me The Greatest unknown Band of all 🤘🤘🤘
The debut album absolutely one of the very best of all time
That was my favorite lineup
Great band. Great music. How can millions of people not get this?
Absolutely!! ALL THE INSTRUMENTS.. Just FANTASTIC!
people are sheep. if the media is not telling you to listen to it, they dont know it exists. they are not real music fans, they just like some music. You have to go out and "find" music. im thankful that we have...
Most if not all people are generally stupid and follow what they are told. These guys rocked the world in my book. RIP Van!
I saw them in 1979 in Detroit shooting star was the warm-up band for the kinks
I used to cruise with them blasting my stereo. 69 Mustang. 1982 and worked for Pizza Hut
I rate this song very high, especially the original studio recording!
I seen them in 1983 they blew me away. Seen them at Kiel auditorium in St.louise
Someone on a prog rock page asked to name songs that were progressive rock by an artist/artists that would otherwise not be considered prog rockers. I listed this song. Truly a master work.

💙 LOVE Shooting Star !! EPIC music !! 🎵🎧🎸📻🥁🎼💙🎶
One of the greatest bands ever over the last 43 years. I love this band, and own everything from them
In my mind one of the best songs ever. Ever.
Howl! With the Best of Us!
GREAT GOD DAMN SONG PERIOD!! Shooting Star #1 fan..

I have always loved this song for both it's lyrics and the excellent interplay between these Musicians. I think it will always stand the test of time. Truly it's ear candy!
Also remember the garbage out at the time...this blew it all away. Just trivial dribble for lyrics and stale lifeless music.
EPIC. I've loved this since it came out almost 40 yrs ago! Such an awesome, meaningful jam.
Very underrated band, they had a lot of great music, and the musicianship was fantastic too. RIP Van McClain, and Bill Guffey.
The best, local band for me. Just talked to an acquaintance, they had played guitar with them 4+ yrs.
Wishing there was a video from SHOOTING STAR in the 80's when they were REALLY ROCKING!
"You've Got What I Need" is on here. Sadly, I believe it's the only video of theirs that is. 😢
Tonight?
I agree! I saw them 1985 when they opened for Heart.
This version is pretty tasty, but I feel you. If I could go back, this is surely one artist I would have found a way to catch live.
@marketmogul I had it on an old VHS. I wish I still had it! Alot of people haven't heard of this band...and they're awesome.

RIP
Van Mclain
Right from a Kansas City guy.
Loved Shooting Star...the music of my youth!
Kansas City Here~!
Kansas City here, actually Bonner Springs, saw them probably late 70s early 80s, Wyandotte County Fairground, in the rodeo arena, several times Rockfest, at Smithville Lake.
Most excellent Talent. The violin is Art in motion, the lyrics Timeless Truth. Thank you from a lady who was there the day rock n roll was born.♥️💃🎶🕊
I love this band!
Kudos to the author and finishers of this 👏
Never seen/heard this rendition, but I love it. "Last Chance" has been my all-time favorite song for well over 30 years now.
RIP Van! you presented our band with album of the year at the Banzai music awards in 1991. It was an honor.
Excellent! Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day.
there will never be great music created again,,, miss great bands like Shooting star

i saw them in the late 90's, and they were phenomenal!
Giant got the same treatment. Not enough people love the fancy stuff.
They weren't promoted as well as they should have been.
sounds awesome still!!!!!!
I agree totally one of the more underrated rock songs of the 80s I personally think it was the best song they ever did
Underrated by who? I never saw one negative review of it.
Man, I forgot just how Great these guys were and the talent they possessed.
Been listening to these guys since 16 years young out of Milford,Ohio and what is it 2022 still rockin...
Great Band. they came several times to Puerto Rico in the 80s.
Yep! Got to see them a couple of times here in Puerto Rico. They ruled! Rip Van!
I was in Houston when You've Got What I Need became a hit. There was a concert there that included: Shooting Star, Cheap Trick and I may be wrong on the headliner, may have been The Eagles! Too bad I couldn't make it there.
I hear this song and CANNOT FUCKING believe how fast time has passed. I'm not an early 80's preteen anymore. My life is short as hell..
My all-time favorite song!!!
Best unknown band in rock and roll history.
Saw them open for Triumph on May 18, 1980 in Louisville, KY. It the was the day I graduated from high school and instead of partying I rocked out.
I love this song. Great musicians!
Fantastic song! Loved these guys for years.
The greatest band from the Midwest you never heard of. Seek them out
A rock masterpeice with everything in the mix!
Brilliantly executed instrumentally and lyricly--we ALL wish rock was back to this quality
One of the greatest songs of all time. This song totally rubs shoulders with Stairway to Heaven, et al.
song got me thru some tuff times

Man! How good is this?? Beautiful song. Top band.
Thanks guys for great memories when I hear this song..... I feel 20 again
A true masterpiece!
Summer Sun is my go to song on the first day of summer every year. Just starts the summer off right.
One of the greatest studio cuts EVER.
Great song it blew me and my friends away back in the day when we first heard it on the radio
Back in 1980, Shooting Star opened for Jefferson Starship at old Vets Auditorium in Des Moines Iowa. Played this song for my daughter last month. It was an OMG moment...total shock at how good this song is from start to finish. A classic!
I WAS THERE IT WAS AMAZING!
Amazing song...underrated band
Underrated by who? Do you not know the difference between underrated and unknown? Really?
Great song! Outstanding musically, and the lyrics are very poignant. I’m in awe of people who can create this stuff.
Truly a great song. I travelled from Florida to St. Louis to see them in the eighties. Never understood how they never grew wider acceptance.
When I read your comment, it brought me back to my childhood. I too grew up in San Jose and remember listening to 98.5 KOME and 92.3 KSJO during this time.
I remember their music when they came out. I liked everything I heard on the radio from SS. No bad tunes.
As badass as ever ! Such an underrated band !
Greatest crowd surfing I've ever seen! Saw them live in Puerto Rico DECADES ago and they were (STILL ARE!) AWESOME!
I went to their concert as well, it was the summer of 1982. Awesome show!
Raúl Martínez Cancañón i did to but i just don’t remember if it was i escmbron pool o a baseball park in Guaynabo
Saw these guys about this time at a BBQ festival with Kansas & Kerry Livgren guested! Great show
This video is depressing. I saw these guys open for a Foghat/BOC gig 23+ years ago at the Cap Centre in DC and they blew us all away. Didn't know then or of them and - wow, I wish you guys could have seen them then. Something special...
Respected by my children. ( adults now).. Hope they pass it on... Very underrated band at the time
This was the first Shooting Star song I heard, and it's still my favorite. I bet that was an awesome show!

Never hot their dues. Incredible band!!!!
I saw these guys in Wuakesha WI in 1983. They were great then and still great today.
At the checkout line several years ago at Hyvee grocery store commenting on the cool classic rock music they were playing. The young guy bagging my groceries then sounds out saying that his father is the bass guitarist for this band.

Love Shooting Star! Brings back memories of listening to this music with my older brother!
I just heard this song, (live version) on KKFI 90.1 FM Friday morning..
What a blast from the past...
I saw them open for Heart in the 80's, I actually won the album Silent Scream from a radio station. I've been a fan ever since. Highly underrated band. A rock violin, I mean come on.

They are AWESOME band they have many great songs
Last Chance has been one of my favorite songs since i was in High school! There is no political bs! It is all about personal responsibility and controlling your own destiny! Sadly, I just liked the song... the lyrics didn't sink in until much later.
