Not only has Hoyt Axton made wonderful contributions to music and acting, his mom Mae co-wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis Presley. Wrap your heads around that.
My favorite local theater showed this one last night. I was very pleasantly surprised. The music and cinematography were great, the revenge scenes had a nightmarish intensity, and the all the work put into making George sympathetic really paid off. There were a couple minor things that didn't work (the entire "Doctor Rasta" sequence could have easily been cut with no harm done), but I loved it overall.
You should really look into getting the new blu-ray set Severin put out of Retribution, has the gore footage restored in the extended cut, and has a ton of great interviews and a CD soundtrack of the Alan Howarth score, and the movie looks better than ever, even better than the Code Red blu-ray I think.
I love to read about filmmakers and how they deal with their struggles, so the pointing to Guy Magars book mentioned in the video is appreciated. Also, I've never seen or heard about this movie...your episode about it really made me curious about it. Thanks for the effort you put in this channel, I greatly enjoy it! Greetings from Germany!
If you are interested in the struggles filmmakers go through you should read "Low Budget Hell" by Robert Maier. It is such a good book cause he was apart of and had to deal with the struggles of every kind of movie. There is a chapter in the book where one actor who was in his 30s dropped dead from a heart attack halfway through filming a movie.
I've been a HUGE fan of Guy Magar, Dennis Lipscomb and this film since discovering it as a video store clerk in 1988. It was one of my most highly recommended films to people who complained about not being able to find anything different, beyond the usual "HORNY TEENAGERS MUST DIE" fare. Thanks for including it in your reviews, and now I've got to go see if I can find the Blu-Ray!
@@GoodBadFlicks `Time to petition my favorite go-to source for impossible-to-find movies, Scream Factory! They have delivered on more rare titles than any other company I know of, and done a magnificent job of it! They charge a pretty penny for their stuff, too, but it's just about always worth it.
@@GoodBadFlicks In Germany it exist a Blu ray from Ofdb Filmworks, the Amary Blu ray it's not OoP, it' available at this Time. The Movie on this Blu ray is in German and in English Language. I love this Movie, very good acting and very athmospheric.
A film's release can make or break it. Even good movies, with studio support, can be overlooked by being released in between two blockbusters, in the summer. Excellent Exploring, for a movie that I never remember seeing on cable, and only a chance video rental, led me to it at all.
I am watching Retribution right this minute. Can the first 10 minutes of this movie BE any more terrifying?! I don't think so. I can't even describe it.
It's interesting that Fangoria would make a comparison to TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, considering that is probably the horror film that introduced the "characters the audience doesn't like enough to hope they survive"-motif. Guess I'm going to have to set a few dollars aside to back the IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS doc. It sounds amazing.
11.07 When the film poster came up it reminded me of when I first rented this film back in the day. I saw Alan Haworth on the credits and wanted to see what he had done with the score. It was a great little film first time round that as recently made me want to see if i can get a version of of it again. Nice review GBF.
You sure know how to bring out humanity in films. Especially ones not so well known . I've compiled a long list of one's to buy based on watching your videos... Love , Peace and Chicken Grease
I like the fact that the director had guts, and believed in his work. I appreciate that so much. Definitely inspired me to take more chances with the scripts that I've been writing. I'm aiming to being director and working for tv shows. Thank you for sharing this Exploring film "Retribution". I was wondering if I can recommend one for you to do, it's called "Innocent Blood"; it's a really underrated film that is created by an AWESOME horror director John Landis.
I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THIS ONE!!! I musta been on one of my... *blippityblippity* ...phases. After having just watched this movie and completely TAKEN by it, I am so happy to get your INSANE knowledge on it. I THINK I'M IN LOVE WITH SUSAN SNYDER IN IT!
Yeah. Heart attack. Underrated yet great character actor. I liked him in "A Soldier's Story", where he played a clueless military captain supervising African-American soldiers on a military base in the South during World War II. Great film. He was also great as mob accountant Sid Royce on the Stephen J. Cannell series, "Wiseguy".
This is a missed opportunity, what with, studios, and others ,messing around ,with the Directors vision,it was never seen asit should have been. What is it ,with people ,putting films out, with NO advertising, promotion? Its as if it was deliberate, glad you gave it ,the appreciation ,it so obviously deserves.Th ank you ,for giving us the true story, behind films, and their makers ,its good to know that people like you know the facts, about underrated movies.
I bought this movie a few months back and never got around to watching it. Now I wish I had. It is so different than what I was expecting. Far more polished and professional looking. I was expecting a regional Slasher, probably shot on video. LOL goes to show what happens when you assume
GBF, do you feel obligated to use your platform as a means of giving these overlooked films the attention they deserved? Because if so, let me just say that it has worked. This immediately went on my list of films I need to see
I've always loved this film since it came out on VHS back in the day in England, I still watch the dvd at least twice a year, I need to pick the blu-ray up;)
I still can't believe how Kevin Yagher turned into such a great effects guy! I will always remember him from the tv miniseries and subsequent original tv show "V" (I had such a crush on him then! hehe).
I remember a video store I used to rent from and they always had it playing in the background, I neverhad the chance to rent it before it went out of business, thank you, I forgot about this ben now I have to get this film
I loved this film ever since it was released in the 80s, I think I was about 10 or 11 when I saw it, it's one of them films that stays with you, I just can't find it anywhere
I saw this cracking film on a rented video tape, later I bought that actual tape when the shop had a sale, that was 30 years ago and I've still got it. SANTA MARIA MOTHER OF GOD, HELP ME!!!!!!
I remember Being 12,and seeing the trailer on another VHS tape. I thought it looked amazing! I've now gotten around to watching it, and it's pretty good.
It's available as part of Prime Video for anyone interested in seeing it who has a Prime sub...at least it is on amazon.co.uk Not sure about other countries.
Daaaaaaamn! Talk about a blast from the past! Forgot all about this movie and thought I was the only one to ever see it! Lol I also forgot the name of it. Nice one 👍
This made me feel actually genuinely sad for the lead actor and director.
Not only has Hoyt Axton made wonderful contributions to music and acting, his mom Mae co-wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis Presley. Wrap your heads around that.
Severin video has just announced that they are releasing a new version of retribution on blu-ray
Expolring series! My favorite!!! Good job GBF!

Mystic Vault just put out the Alan Howarth soundtrack to this on a beautiful LP. Love this movie. "Santa Maria, mother of God, help me!"
I'm so glad when you show dream projects, and when people believe in the director's vision. So many overlooked movies... Thanx!!!
PD Zombie yes!

Wow I remember this movie as a kid, but for the life of me could not remember the name of this movie. Thank you
Felt exactly the same when he reviewed Santa Claus(1959)
The effort put into this movie alone makes it worth checking out.
I’ve been gone for 3 months and haven’t been able to watch your videos. So happy I can binge them
Welcome back!
Finally a new episode!! Been waiting for 3 days already! Thanks though, and the documentary looks fantastic!
I remember renting this out on video as a kid. Had really creepy box art, too. Nice review.
Thanks!
My wife and I are having a little girl in January. I'm buying her the GBF kitty logo tee for her birthday. She'll be the coolest baby around!
Awesome! Congratulations!
let me know how she's doing in about 17 years

So sad that a good movie like this was never got a chance by the studios at that time.
Holy shit how did I miss this upload!? Love GBF!!
Thanks!
That statue is actually not a tiki. It's a small-scale replica of a moai; the giant-head statue cluttering Easter Island.
hell yeah kickstarter opening was awesome ...and with dance with the dead,s music .
In Search of Darkness looks goooooooood!!!
Oh! I remember Werewolf, what an amazing show
I loved that show too.
Same
"He wanted a different look for the shots, so he color-coded them *green."*
Yes. He did. He sure did.
_That's a lotta green, man._
Sweet. Never even heard of it but looks right up my alley. I’ll definitely need to check it out
Good video as always but I had never heard of Dance with the Dead before and OH MY GOD where has this music been all my life?
This definitely looks right up my alley! I must find this film & watch it! It has everything I could ever want in a horror film! 😀😃😄
Ever heard of J.D's. revenge? It was a earlier black movie from the 1970s that was similiar in plot...
Thanks so much for this, the movie is available on Amazon Prime so I watched it and really liked it.
Great vid!
Never heard of this movie before, will definitely have to check this out!
Dennis Lipscomb died 4 years ago. RIP.

In every way, Retribution (1986/7) is one of my favourite horror movies of all time.
thanks, thats the best movie seen in a long time

You mean his brother Jeff Yagher. He's the brother who acts.
Are they twins - they look exactly alike! Thanks for the clarification. There are good genes in that family. hehe
I love this movie. When I can afford it, i need to upgrade my code red dvd to blu ray. At one time, I had this on VHS. Thank you for featuring this.
Thanks for watching!

And is it just me, or does this premise sound a lot like the 'Twilight-Zone' episode "Dead Man's Shoes"...?
GBF on a THURSDAY 😮 I love it!!!
