- Fifth song (words below, often entitled ‘Down in the Bunker’) from concert recorded at the Golders Green Hippodrome, with personnel list of:
Steve Gibbons - Lead Vocal
Dave Carroll - Lap Steel Guitar
Bob Wilson - Guitar
Trevor Burton - Bass Guitar
Bob Lamb - Drums
Steve’s words mix a battleground with golf:
I've been cast into the mold of new times
I've been gassed behind enemy lines
I was the last one from two thousand and one young squaddies
I thought to myself, "It's got to be a dream"
That's when I noticed this hole in the green
And the girl in the bunker revealing her beautiful body
Well, there were handicaps all around
But I had to get into that hole in the ground
Though the grass was covered in blood and the green was muddy
I took my aim but I missed the shot
And it landed right down in the spot
Where the girl in the bunker was flashing her beautiful body
I stripped off my uniform when I saw the sign which read:
"No squaddies in the clubhouse after half past nine, you're dead!
Members are requested, please don't play the green that's red--
And please don't lose your balls down in the bunker!"
So I stepped into the clubhouse, I had my birthday-suit disguise
I must have looked suspicious, they could see it in my eyes
"Members must be covered, kindly button up your flies--
And please don't lose your balls down in the bunker!"
I've been cast into the mold of new times
I've been gassed behind enemy lines
The last one from two thousand and one young squaddies
I woke up and the room was green
And when the nurse came on the scene
She was the girl from the bunker-- oh, what a beautiful body!
Saw them live twice. Brilliant.
Down in the bunker 👌👍
One of the greatest bands ever. Grossly underrated.
.
Thanks once again - great track
Eva Braun's favourite song!!! 😜
Another great song from one of the UK's best (and most underrated) songwriters ever - as good and influential as Chuck Berry was, it's a shame that Steve Gibbons is best known for recording and releasing Berry's tune Tulane, and getting a near top 10 hit with it (in 1977); great version though it is, Steve has written multiple quality tunes, as is evidenced here. Enjoyed the song - thanks for the upload.
He is cooler than James Dean !!
Saw the band do this in an Oxford University quadrangle. Absolutely brilliant one of the best live shows I have ever seen. Great band!
One of my favourites of all times...got it on vinyl and as a CD xxx

"WHen i stepped into that clubhouse with my birthday suit disguise, I must have looked suspicious - they could see it in my eyes". Great Line

I have an old audio of this brilliant show that I watched on a small TV (gulp) almost 40 years ago. i had given up hope of ever seeing the video again - so this is the best Christmas present to find this again.
