Just started learning guitar a couple of weeks ago. This is one of my favorite songs, so I decided it would be the first song I learned. Great instruction, dude! Got all the cords down, just need to improve my speed and rhythm. Thank a lot my man! Subscribed and will be coming to you for future songs! Keep up the great work!
Welcome to guitar playing and thanks for letting me know this video helped you. Feel welcome to comment on other videos and reach out to me if you need anything. :)
Great tutorial, I’ve been really getting back into Deftones a lot lately, always likes them but was always super into 311 and never really dug into their guitar riffs and songs like I am nowadays, and I’m so glad I did because they’re such a treasure trove of killer guitar riffs and banger songs.
Nice tutorial on this one, I was thinking I needed a bartitone or 7-string to play this but now I see that it’s merely Drop D flat.
Yup. Just change the timing is all. 311 has a TON of fun riffs to play and learn for sure. I thought I uploaded some already. I'll definitely make sure to in the summer. :)
@@MountainsideguitarDT Nice I’ll check your channel out I have been posting 311 guitar tutorials on UA-cam long ago like 2009 but I remove them at some point and never got around to uploading some newer ones but yeah man 311 practically taught me how to play guitar I’ve learned most of their songs off of their first six albums or so.
Awww why did you pull them down?
@@MountainsideguitarDT you know I’m not sure, I think I had some mistakes in them and I wanted to re-do them or something, never got around to it and lost the originals, they were decent tutorials but defenitly old footage and low-res, I had Guns are for Pussies and All Mixed Up, purpose, and Jackolanterns weather. Heavy on the Blue Album hehe.
Now that you mention it, I need to make some new ones and put those up, I can do it pretty quickly with my iPhone 13.
Thanks bro!
Awesome.
u definitely deserve more subscribers man, great tutorial
Thank a bunch. I appreciate you leaving me a comment. I'll be returning soon. :)
Great tutorial bro!!! I love the vids
Thank you for letting me know. More to come soon.
beautiful guitar
Thanks:)
Thank you! I knew most of it, just for the part during the chorus i didnt know that the two notes were a fifth apart. Thanks for the tutorial! This is my favorite deftones song, its just so good and catchy! Im learning everlong too
Nice! Glad to hear it helped. I think I have a video on Everlong as well.
Great tutorial one of the first songs I learned on guitar! Honestly one of the reasons I was hyped to get a guitar was to learn Deftones songs. So thanks for the easy tutorial!
You're welcome!

Awesome. Welcome aboard. More to come soon. :)
The song, "Around the Fur" has a pretty sick riff in it too. I love that intro just as much as , "my own summer".
Agree
The shirt 👍thanks for the lesson
You got it 😎
Ur a freaking legend
Lol I'm not. Thanks for watching and more videos to come soon. :)
Great lesson ,thankyou.
Mrudul Patil glad you enjoyed it. I plan on uploading more deftones songs!
Mountain Side Guitar lovely, please do!! also did you not cover all the parts of the song? i think the filler and the outro is missing . Great lesson nonetheless for a begineer like me
Mrudul Patil I put my efforts into teaching the main part of the songs and spend more time doing so instead of flying through the whole song and skimming.
Mrudul Patil if you need a guitar teacher I can be of much more of service that way as well.
Good damn lesson dude!
Thanks! More to come this summer :)
really helpful ty!!
Yw:)
Wow, the instructions and 3 way breakdown is much appreciated!!! Great tutorial! Appreciate this! Thank you
You're welcome. More to come soon
Hell yeah!
Deftones!
Hey man you are a pretty good teacher. Thanks for the lesson!!
You're welcome. More Deftones to come soon.
this is an amazing tutorial! breaking the riff down step by step and no trying to force a patreon down our throats lol
Glad you enjoyed it. Now please sign up for my Patreon. Hahahaha jk
Good it, thanks brotha. As a kid I always tough that riff would be imposible . But after years of practice , (first time really looking it up) I got it easy in minutes. All the time shifting always confused me over the years… lol no wonder why I couldn’t pick them out by ear ( all those songs) 😤😅
Lol I totally get where you're coming from. I can definitely be hard at first 🙂
@@MountainsideguitarDT I meant the drop d tuning. I just discovered that recently and now it makes sense why They sound the way they do.
Dude! Drop D tuning is an awesome tuning to write riffs in. One of my favorite. Glad you figured it out :)
Thank you so much for posting!! I’m a beginner and this video is helping so much!! I have a question tho I have the fender mustang LT25 I was wondering what would be the best amp settings to play this? none of the presets sounds right. Thank you so much either way I appreciate the video !!
Lots of gain, lots of treble, some mid, and half or a little more on bass. It also depends on the guitar you have.
Great video boss
Thanks. More videos to come soon
Thank you ! ! !
Timothy C Hylton thanks for watching :)
Badass on this 6 string! Although mine “ONLY” gets played on the Ibanez RG 570(JB) or 550(NP)! Awesome playing and lesson especially on the six string same choice of mine!#Ibanez#RG#570/550#Deftones#MyOwnSummer!#🎸🔥🤘🏻❤️✨
Nice 🙂
Why is this song so much goddamn fun to play
Cause it's fucking Deftones! Haha
@@MountainsideguitarDT you got me there lol
Nice one mate
Thanks
cool guitar
Thanks Kai :)
Damn, i love you fam TuT thanks
Glad it helped
thankyou sm
You're welcome :)
Thanks for sharing this. I (43y) started playing in feb this year (and taking lessons). I love this song and this tutorial is awesome.
I'm analysing my efforts ;) with this vid and the original song. In my effort (drop D) the sound of the main riff feels more linked (not good)... I mean the string is ringing out in between the steps. I can do in similar speed, so obviously it is not ringing out completely, but in this vid and the org song it feels like the string is ringing out less.
Maybe muted by the fingertips of the fretting hand(reducing pressure on the finger tips after the pick)? It doesn't show in the vid though.
Perhaps more staccato it is called? The contrast seems higher between the picks.. How to achive that sound?
Not sure how else to describe. Any clue on that? Thanks :)
Hmmm everything for this song is plucked open with no palm mutes that I can remember. Maybe your hands a not exactly in sync when played. Try playing along with my video (exactly) in time with parts separated. Then, as a whole. Please feel welcome to contact me more about this on my website where you can send me a direct email. We can always set up a Skype meet and greet so I can see exactly what's going on as well. I look forward to hearing from you.
@@MountainsideguitarDT thanks for replying. I tried again, with parts separated. After a couple of reps I tried again without pauses. Way better.. tried a couple of times with pauses again and then without pauses... Again better..
It has to have something to do with timing. Improved the way I listen to the song and how to repeat it. Thanks a lot!
Awesome. Keep going. Keep me in the loop. :)
I love that ots easy to play, but hard to keep up. I've started to play and can only reach about 80% - 85% of the songs speed lol. Been playing for hours, but i know tomorrow will be better :)
Technique comes after your body has adjusted to repetition. Not in minutes. Keep going :)
Great video. Would love to know what equipment you are running through for your tone. Sounds pretty damn close to Carpenters. Love that shirt too, HELEMET logo with the old SOD-ish skull.
Favorite Deftones song? Who can pick just one? Gore is my least favorite album...I find I listen to that one the least, but I love all of them.
quick tip: if you are still doing videos, although that guitar is sick, it would easier if it had traditional inlays for newbies to visualize where you are on the fret board. Liked and SUB'd.
The only thing I was using was the guitar and am amp. A 15 watt spider line 6. I got to see Helmet live and they rocked! Got that shirt at the show. Around the Fur is definitely my favorite album but I have not kept up with them in a while but the self titled album has grown on me a lot. As for the guitar I chose for the video, it's the only one I had that came close to the sound I wanted. I don't own a dozen guitars is all and that one happens to have a cool serpent on it. Thanks for watching and more videos to come soon.
Thank you
You're welcome 🙂
thanks a lot
Anytime:)
Quick and straight to the point \m/ You should add some heavy reverb to it though ;)
I kept the reverb light 😎 thanks for watching
@@MountainsideguitarDT still sounds great though 🤘🏻
Thanks :)
Tutorial helped a lot, got almost all of it down the only problem i just can't get my guitar to sound like that 😭
Check the comments. I believe I have posted my amp settings
lifter is m fav..
Add me to the list of people who learned this as their first song on guitar. 25 years go by fast...
Awesome. Glad to hear that :)
In the beginning of the video you said slide to eigth fret but you went up two frets so that's actually 7 not eight lol great vid loved the tutorial!
Lol good catch . Thanks for watching:)
Idk what the fuck that instrument is you're playing but it looks amazing!👌🏽
You should do a lesson on “give it” by Helmet
I'll keep that in mind :)
My favourite at the moment is CMND\CTRL
Nice :)
I'm curious about your equipment. Your tone sounds exactly like his
It's just the guitar and an amp. Line 6 spider 15 watt. That's all.
I’m looking into guitars because I’m trying to learn how to play for a backing track to my singing. I’m a huge Linkin Park and Deftones fan at this point and I’m wanting to harness that type of sound. What guitar, lessons, and equipment are recommended?
That sound can be created different ways. I am using a Les Paul knock off with a line 6 spider amp. The thing that helps me is I know how to manipulate the sounds to get them the way I want them. It takes practice and skill from hours of messing with amps and guitar. But the real sound comes from your fingers.
@@MountainsideguitarDT Thank you so much! I'm going to continue checking out what your channel has to offer and sub. I appreciate the help!
You're welcome. :)
great video but maybe use a guitar with these dots on the fretboard (i forgot what they're called) it would make it sm easier
I work with what I have available. In each video, I am clear about what fret you move to for every part of the song.
Alright brother thanks that was awesome, got it but what’s next?!!! 😩😢😵💫 like the chorus and all the other ishh
I do breakdowns of parts of songs on UA-cam brother. B
However, there are plenty other guitar tabs and lessons available online for free.
@@MountainsideguitarDT yeah found someone on UA-cam , easy song yet sick..!
It's a great song 😊 I teach guitar lessons and upload here when I can. If you have any trouble you can reach out to me. Keep jamming! :)
@@MountainsideguitarDT yup, so many legendary songs (drop d) you know how playing is , you learn the few not so intricate chords and you’re playing thousands of songs… which is great 👌🏼
Can you make a video on how to tune the guitar to a drop C sharp?
There are videos out there on How to do it. Google "how to tune guitar to X Sharp tuning"
