I just realized… SpongeBob and Patrick, two chronological adults, cosplayed as MM&BB in this episode, and were NEVER called nerds or losers for it. In 1999/2000. Before nerd and geek went mainstream. That's definitely impressive. Bravo
Id have to say, my personal favorite MM and BB episode has to be MM AND BB V. It is just so memorable and is overall a great episode.

You know, one of the things about One Coarse Meal that people harp on with the suicide joke is they act as if they've never brought it up before. Truth is, even as far back as Band Geeks ("Too bad that didn't kill me...") they have been making references to characters, especially Squidward, wanting to end it. Hell, it's the basis of an entire popular but shitty creepypasta. I don't remember my initial response to OCM's suicide joke, something between a scoff and a chuckle if I recall. Because I don't think I believed at the time Plankton was entirely serious. And yes, I was an adult by the time I saw this episode. The first episode to really disturb and piss me off that I recall is Squid Baby, and large part of that is my personal experience with people who have suffered traumatic head injuries due to many members of my family being in mental health, medical, and social work positions.
But that's neither here nor there, I suppose. This is about Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, and you know, I'd like to think even if the episodes declined in quality over time, Ernest Borgnine was proud of his work on this show. He was not only still entertaining people until the end, his life's work, but the character made him relevant to entire new generations. When the first MM/BB episode aired, I only vaguely knew who Ernest Borgnine was. I knew Tim Conway a little better thanks to Nick at Nite and the Simpsons, but other than "he's a famous old actor", I knew nothing. Over time, I came to recognize him in lots of other things I liked based on his voice alone (specifically his work on ER, a show I was into before SpongeBob and watched through to the end) and Merlin's Mystical Shop of Wonders (which would be riffed in one of my favorite MST3K episodes). So while this wasn't the Oscar-caliber work of his early career, I genuinely believe he enjoyed it and it was a fitting late-life tribute to an excellent actor.
There is even a suicide joke in MM and BB IV, when Patrick talk about Wumbo, Squidward being hold by Spongebob, say that if he fall from here, will it kill him.
The problem with one coarse meal is that it's not a simple joke
It's an actual plot point

I think it's pretty interesting that the voice actors of MM and BB are actually aged apart like their characters, Ernest Borgnine was 95 before he passed away and Tim Conway who plays BB is 81 which shows how mermaidman was about that much older than barnacle boy

Actually mostly in Seasons 7 and 8 (the latter having it as a recurring theme). To my knowledge, the only Patrick's a Prick episode (and the worst) is The Card.
Skeeter Mania The only true Patrick's a Prick episode is "The Card"? I'm sorry, but that logic just doesn't sit with me. But, I do have to agree that "The Card" is the worst Patrick's a Prick episode. Heck, it's in my top 3 least favourite episodes of season 6 along with "Pet or Pests" and "Truth or Square"!

Maybe “M-M & B-B” exists in the way that Cat-Man/Adam West is in Fairly OddParents.

Not to be a party pooper, Pieguy, but if you liked every Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episode up to this point, then you're going to be very disappointed with what Season 6 has to offer: Ditchin' and Shuffleboarding. The former is an episode that I'm indifferent to, but it does have some things I like such as the cannibalism joke as you know the fish is not a cannibal. Also the moral taught is that you should never ditch, and I think it's handled well until the ending, where Mrs. Puff does the same and gets arrested. Spongebob promises that he won't ditch again, and because Mrs. Puff didn't know he did so, she yelled "What do you mean again?!" as if Spongebob got off the hook entirely. Also Patrick and everyone else is a jerk to Spongebob. I was almost going to give it a Scumbob rating, but I guess I'll be generous and call it Meh.
You might be wondering how Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are involved. In the beginning, SB and Pat watch a commercial reminding the viewers that the heroes will appear to sign their new comic books. Patrick wants to go, but Spongebob can't because he has to go to Boating School (WARNING plot hole: why not the Krusty Krab?!).
The other one, Shuffleboarding, is much much worse. It starts like how the first Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy ends with Spongebob and Patrick torturing the heroes who this time have a reason to fight them off. It ends with the heroes getting injured and now being hospitalized. This proves troublesome as the police commissioner reminds them that they had to participate in a shuffleboarding competition. Spongebob and Patrick decide to pose as them under the aliases Man Bob (Man Sponge?) and Pat Boy (Boy Patrick?). And here's the real kick in the balls part. Spongebob told Patrick that they already won the tournament, effectively scrapping the original premise of the episode with no exposition whatsoever. As a writer, it offends me greatly if they change a plot when there's no need to. The actual plot is actually SB and Pat arresting the Bikini Bottomites for stupid reasons (wasting a Krabby Patty, being too old, chewing gum too loud, and even having their shoes untied). To make things even worse, they harass Man Ray while he's doing his laundry, and this brings up something that might be continuous. Man Ray seemed to be friends with Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy prior to the point when Spongebob and Patrick attacked him, somewhat suggesting that it takes place after III. At the end, Spongebob and Patrick leave the real Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy at the mercy of the trouble they caused. As in they got completely off the hook. It's lessons like these that make me genuinely worried about how this generation of kids are getting their morals and where from. Definitely a Scumbob episode.
Thankfully there's a breath of fresh air with Season 7's Back to the Past and The Bad Guy Club for Villains, the latter of which is very similar to the fifth Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episode.

I don't think Time Warner Cable called the episode Superfriends. Another fun fact: Superfriends is the name of a cartoon by Hanna-Barbera. I loved that cartoon as a kid.

Ernest Borgnine was really good in the 1979 version of All Quiet on The Western Front where he plays Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky.
My favorite part in this episode (and maybe all of spongebob) is 62. I'm cracking up just thinking about it. The only other part that comes close (and may or may not be the best bit) is when Patrick order's 1 krabby patty in help wanted and he gets shot out of the Krusty Krab with Krabby Patties, and you just hear living in the sunlight in the background knowing spongebob is going through that montage again but without any customers.
Ernest Borgnine also voiced Carface in the sequel to All Dogs Go To Heaven and the animated series!

Ernest Borgnine plays a FANTASTIC villain in Convoy. Sure, the movie has somewhat of a ridiculous premise, but it's a great good guy/freedom vs bad guy/justice story.

I heard somewhere that they have the actor who played Mermaid Man in Battle for Bikini Bottom (the video game, not the episode) to play him again if Mermaid Man appears in the series again.

As a super hero buff I love mermaidman and barnacle boy their really enjoyable even in bad episodes their fun to watch though I do hope they retire them in respect of Ernest. I do hope they have some kind of appearance or role in the next spongebob movie that would be the best way to kinda retire their story arc. Also I can't wait till you review a fun episode about them in their prime

Here's a fun fact: On the tv description,episode 5 was titled Superfriends. The description said "Superheroes visit.". If you put in the beginning setting of the episode,you may understand why. Perhaps 5 was supposed to be about Mermaid man and Barnacle boy visiting the krusty krab,but nickelodeon decided to change it since it's boring.
