    The timing of this one is spot on. Just today I drove down assateague in the jeep pitching out 20-25 whelk shells we had acquired over the years. We have so many we decided to keep the best of the best and return all the others randomly along the beach so someone else could find them and get to enjoy them. Worry not, we still have display cases filled w whelks, scotchies, olives, scallops and the one other treasure you find while shelling - sea glass!

    • @fatherandsonsfishing
      @fatherandsonsfishing  3 роки тому +1

      I’ve never looked for sea glass before, don’t get me started on a new hobby! That’s a good idea to purge the collection a bit. Someone who doesn’t look for shells a lot will find one of those and it will be a treasure for them. I have a whelk garden and I’m about to do the same thing. I’ve been lucky enough to find enough that it’s time to let some of the others go!

    I know where you are ,-) I've been shelling those beaches for as long as I can remember. Nothing beats that rush from finding a whole scotch bonnet or a whole sand dollar! My daughter and I both found a whole scotch bonnet out there last year. Good luck on your shelling! If your real smart you get a net at low tide and you can grab up the ones in the shoreline! You have me ready to go to the beach!

    Great video, solid pointers! Congrats on your scotch bonnet! A good tip for finding those big intact whelk shells is trying to look in the waters edge. Now, I know the OBX have raging currents but on a calm day when the tide is going out, it may be calm enough to take a peak at what is out at the edge of the surf zone, or sometimes little pools of water get left behind as the tide goes out, and that can be a good spot to look for half-buried shells. Thanks for sharing!

      Running solo Randy ? A man needs to have some alone time now and then. I’ve never thought about putting hot peppers in my Hot Chocolate ( I’m a Bailey’s guy ) but maybe I’ll try in next year..... NOT ! My old Aunt Mitzy lived on a farm in Ohio but wintered in Florida while my poor Uncle Benny stayed home to tend the farm, and she was one of those beach combers that would be up well before sunrise with her little wagon searching for shells. The walls in the breezeway between their house and garage was cover with old netting and decorated with hundreds of seashells. It was my first exposure to what the sea has to offer..... other than fish sticks.

    • @fatherandsonsfishing
      @fatherandsonsfishing  2 роки тому +2

      This was filmed in Frisco. You’re in a great place for shelling, you just need to be persistent. I’ve had many times where I didn’t find anything and then sometimes everything works out. I have a video coming out soon where there were whelks everywhere I looked, plus some more rare shells that I had never previously found - all near Ramp 49. If you don’t mind walking a bit, there is a parking lot at Ramp 49 before the 4x4 area. You should also check out South Beach near the campground by the Lighthouse, and also check out Ramp 55 if you don’t mind driving down the road to Hatteras. You can park and it’s a fairly short walk to get to the beach in that area. Finally, the earlier you go, generally the better your odds at finding shells.
