Been marathoning your videos lately. Good stuff man. I’m still learning how to make my hair (similar description yours) to keep it’s volume. I also find that the hair dryer made a huge difference but I seem to get tug with even light stuff like the hustle cream so I think I’ll to start using conditioner to see if they will help.
Thanks Clint! Yes, conditioner with definitely help big time. Plus you could also try some type of smoothing prestyler like a serum, smoothing lotion or hair oil.
You bet! For prestylers I highly recommend 25 spray from TheSalonGuy, Smoothing Lotion from Moroccanoil, Glitterati from XMondo and Boost Tonic from Stickmore. All great options!
Adam Daniels how ? Everyone says that about hair products nowadays, which I get it but when it comes to Pomade, it’s either water based, oil based or orthodox but pomades are the same, they are for sleek hair styles
In this case hold and shine levels. Gray Ghost has a stronger hold and 5th sample has a little more shine. In my opinion 5th Sample would be better for the more slick styles as gray ghost lends itself more towards modern matte styles.
hey I know this is an older vid, but I just tried this product and I could barely run it through my hair. Nowhere near as effortless as you, it was super tacky and grippy and literally ripped some hairs out lol. Any advice?
That is pretty weird. I mean it's def strong but I had no real issue applying from what I recall. Maybe you emulsified it for too long in the hands before applying and it started to dry? That can cause the grip factor to increase big time.
@@TDMStyle thanks so much for the reply. I def may have emulsified it for way too long in my hands (it was basically gone). I also didn’t use any oils. I have 25spray coming in today and will give it another go. I love the vids and appreciate the tips. Thank you!
Try the Crystal Lake by shear revival too!! We have a similar hair type and it would be AMAZING if you did a review on that. I plan on purchasing it and i wanna know what it would be like in our thick/wavy/coarse hair haha. Looove the video today btw!!
Damn. I must be doing something wrong. My hair style is similar to yours with using Gray Ghost as a prestyler/base & their matte paste, my hair spills over =/
@@TDMStyle It feels a little too heavy. I've tried both on their own with similar outcomes. I'm assuming I just can't style my hair well, haha. I've had to switch to a more traditional water based pomade for more control =/
Ethan Marcelo it’s a cream, not a clay so it’s not super thick. Breaks down easy. Shine is healthy. Or “natural matte”. It’s not greasy at all to me. And leaves your hair feeling soft and healthy. Also it doesn’t smell like a margarita.😂
How does it compare with northern lights? Looks like you start with 2 different forms; a cream and a paste BUT..you’re left with same thing in terms of similar hold/shine after breakdown..
Not at all. Northern Lights has a much drier, clay-like texture and feels basically weightless in the hair, and also has more of a medium hold and a very matte finish. Gray Ghost has a heavier/waxier presence in the hair, a very different texture (less course and chunky), and a low shine. They are quite different.
Depends what sort of look you're after! Northern lights is a matte paste, gray ghost has low shine and I haven't personally used Crystal Lake, but I'm pretty sure that one has some shine too (and might dry hard as a more traditional WB pomade I think... but I'm not sure!)
Its not relevant, but i self have messy/curly hair and i want something flexible when iT is in my hair and prefer matte finish do you know a product for me? I maybe thought the Morris motley styling balm or the Fatboy putty i hope you can helpt me!
That comb is just some cheap "styling comb" (I think Conair brand?) that I got at a drug store. It's decent. Tbh lately I've been using the ByVilain combs, and they're actually super high quality and nice.
Sure! It doesn't cause too much separation of strands like some other pomades do, nor does it have a ton of shine, so I think it would work just as well for fine hair.
your hair looks awesome! can you kindly do a video on aesop violet leaf hair balm? my hair is thick, wavy and coarse.I'm looking for a medium hold and swoopy hair product which i can restyle throughout the day. I don't really like high hold products that make my hair stiff. Can you recommend some products for me?
As far as medium hold and slight shine I'm a huge fan of Crystal Lake from Shear Revival As far as matte Northern Lights also from Shear Revival is a good one Hustle from The Salon Guy, which I'm gonna try myself sometime soon, Monarch from Blumaan is pretty good from what I hear
Thanks Robin! I would definitely recommend Hustle for you - for me it does exactly what you’re looking for! Also I agree Northern Lights is another great option, a bit on the drier side. Fuertes clay is another stellar option if you want something oil-based!
Hmm I haven't tried Easy Tiger myself, but that one is oil-based while GG is water-based. So I guess mostly it depends on whether you want easy washout, or buildup.
Matt, you have to try the newly reformulated Oasis Clay from Templeton tonics! Chris did such a great job on it, it's a freaking AMAZING clay! Feels super light in the hair with a massive hold! It also nourishes the hair while styling it and it all rinses out with just water! He's got 6 scents available, I got the Aeventus one, smells amazing! Phenomenal product! You truly have to try it out man!
4DZX K If you’re referring to the part where I commented on my neighbor’s loud truck/tractor outside, no, it isn’t because they have “real jobs.” I don’t live on or anywhere near a farm (and if I did, I would never criticize those people. They are certainly very hard working, and we desperately need farms). I live in a small, quiet neighborhood but have two particular neighbors who have literal fucking yeety-ass monster trucks and bullshit low-rider stance cars with tin can mufflers (and yes, one of them also has an old farm tractor for some ungodly reason). And they like to loudly speed them up and down my street (where small children live and play outside mind you) just for the sole purpose of making noise and being idiots, often very late at night when those of us who DO have have jobs are trying to sleep. So, yeah. I’m not “getting touchy” about “people with REAL JOBS” there, buddy. Also in case you were wondering, I also have a “REAL JOB” where I work full time as a system administrator, and do this youtube thing as a fun hobby. Soooo 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@@TDMStyle 🤣 Now I understand waaayy more, and now I actually do feel bad for you with neighbors that don't take into consideration their own neighbors and are willing to bother them with such disturbing noise without consideration. So I guess my previous statement has been turned upside down and the opposite does actually apply to them. My apologies, it can definitely be irritating and I understand. All the best to you.
When I detect your mood at the beginning of the video, I know if the product will be good or bad ;)
Nice vid Matt! as always

I LOVE Shear Revival, the Matte Paste is currently go-to. I am trying to see if either this Pomade or Fifth Sample.
Why not both? They are very different products
Adam Daniels how ? Everyone says that about hair products nowadays, which I get it but when it comes to Pomade, it’s either water based, oil based or orthodox but pomades are the same, they are for sleek hair styles

Adam Daniels well for modern matte looks I used Shear Revival Northern Lights Matte Paste Or CHAPTR Styling Cream. I also like natural ingredients.
@@alfredo101109 Also solid options.
I agree!!! Perfect summer pomade!
How does it compare to phantasm?

Can you review Hanz de fuko shampoo and conditioner
Recommend this over lake crystal?
I haven’t tried Crystal Lake so I can’t really say. Sorry!
Shear Revival is the only brand that is almost on par with Stephen's products for me. I'm very satisfied with what I've tried.
Same! I’ve only tried two of their products so far but I love both of them. Really great stuff.
@@TDMStyle so you think gray ghost has more hold than Northern Lights?
How does this compare to the northern lights? Can’t decide which one!
NL is much more matte and drier than this, and feels lighter in the hair. GG is waxier with a natural shine, and probably stronger hold.
So for longer hair style you would recommend the ghost?
Length isn’t really a factor, it’s more what sort of texture and finish you’re after.
This or dauntless pomade (not tribute)? Will you review the pomade?
I did a review for Dauntless already. I prefer Gray Ghost
@@TDMStyle ah you’re right! You did that along with the other products. I’ll check that out! Is the hold and endurance comparable, though?
Yeah I'd say so. For me Dauntless is waxier feeling and had a little more shine.
You should do a review of the new version of nostalgic grooming clay
Ethan Marcelo it’s so good! My daily driver right now for sure
@@pompgt7234 is it an easier scoop like they say it is? I still want it to be a bit thick tho bcz i like that heavy clay experience.
@@pompgt7234 how's the shine level? Is it overly greasy?
Ethan Marcelo it’s a cream, not a clay so it’s not super thick. Breaks down easy. Shine is healthy. Or “natural matte”.
It’s not greasy at all to me. And leaves your hair feeling soft and healthy.
Also it doesn’t smell like a margarita.😂
This or the Northern Lights paste for Pomadour styles?
If you're after a more traditional pomp, I'd go with Gray Ghost.
How does it compare with northern lights? Looks like you start with 2 different forms; a cream and a paste BUT..you’re left with same thing in terms of similar hold/shine after breakdown..

Could you do the ingredients section whereby you are able to display it out ( just like you've used to in looong ago past videos ) ?
I can do that! I wasn't sure whether people really cared/liked that part that much so I've been omitting it lately. But I'm happy to put it back in :)
Looong ago? Loong ago there was no UA-cam, no internet, and not even Matt's parents were born back then. You mean: A short while ago.
New sub here! I'm watching all your reviews! Can you recommend me one for my thin hair? Northern lights, gray ghost or crystal?
Depends what sort of look you're after! Northern lights is a matte paste, gray ghost has low shine and I haven't personally used Crystal Lake, but I'm pretty sure that one has some shine too (and might dry hard as a more traditional WB pomade I think... but I'm not sure!)

What sort of hold level are you after? There are lots of good options depending on exactly what you're looking for.
A medium to high hold
I’d say some great options are Hustle or Clutch from TheSalonGuy, Fuertes clay, Stickmore clay fiber, or Shear Revival Northern Lights 👍🏻
Bro what kind of comb do you use? The finer tooth one (at like 5:00)...also disagree man you look amazing with those cleaner styles
