  • Paul shows how to apply set to a crosscut handsaw. He discusses how and why it differs from applying set to a ripcut saw before showing the ins and outs of how to accurately apply set to enable the saw to cut cleanly and accurately.

    I always get something from your videos. Keep up the great work. I would love to walk around your shop and look at all the planes in the background.

    I have two questions. Is it better to file the teeth before you set them, or does it matter? Also, how often should you have to set them? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!

    thanks for this, would you ever consider removing all set on a second hand saw and starting again or even removing it from a new saw

    Does anyone remember which video Paul reworked the saw handle of a plain modern saw to be more comfortable and resemble an older saw?

    Mr. Sellers, I tend to bend a handsaw on the inward side or have harmonic vibrations where the saw blade is at the outward side of a board. Please recommend how I can improve my performance. Thank you, Bill S.

    Thanks for the video. I am about to undertake my biggest project to date. It calls for a 2 ft wide top to be laminated. I am worried that I will not do this properly and the places that I glue will split. Do you have a video that covers the proper way to do this so you don't have to worry about splitting along the glue lines?

    Do you have a recommendation for a saw set! Or are they all fairly similar?

    Maybe I'm crazy but would it actually matter if the set was opposite so the teeth cut bevel-out instead of bevel-in? It would be a 60 degree cutting angle either way, no? I guess this would mess up future sharpening though since rather than widening the gullet, it would instead close it off completely (from the bevel's perspective).

    How hard would it be to convert a rip saw to a crosscut?

    • @kaizoebara
      @kaizoebara 7 років тому +1

      Should be fairly easy as a ripcut is basically a crosscut saw without bevels. Just bevel the teeth and you're good to go.
      However, the other way round (cross->rip) is not really feasible, because you'd need to file away a good portion of each tooth to remove the bevels.
