James, (Yaqob in Aramaic) is a son from a previous marriage as you say, however, Joseph was polygamous. He had other wives. In fact, the reason Mariam is mentioned in the genealogy is to show which wife the son came from. That is the tradition in the Near East when a woman is mentioned in a genealogy.

Funny thing......before I had internet or any books by Dr. Tabor, Bart Ehrman, Eisenman, etc......I figured out the Beloved Disciple was probably James. It was the only thing that made sense, an actual brother of Jesus becoming head of the family. That is not what my religion teaches but Jesus was a Jew and "Mary ever virgin" doesn't fit into Jewish belief.

James was the head of the Christian church in Jerusalem which is also where the surviving apostles were.
Paul was a jewish apostate as said tonight Acts 21, 21 - They have been told about you that you teach all the jews who live among the gentiles and APOSTASY: to turn away from Mosses, not to circumcise their children, not to observe tradition/customs.

Giving your children the same name might be more common than modern folk realise. Julius Caesar’s dad had two sisters both called Julia, and he called his own daughter Julia. The medieval Paston family had two sons called John. In a book about an Irish lifeboat tragedy I read, one family had several daughters all called Mary. They were distinguished by different middle names. It might be that certain names were a strong family tradition or an act of devotion, and with high infant mortality, it was a way of keeping a family name going. The available names were fewer in the past than now.

Thus, the SECOND Mary (NOT the "Mother of Jesus" but her SISTER) would have had the surname of "SALOME"; as in "Mary Salome", reputed (INcorrectly by the "Gospels") to be the mother of James as well as of John (Mark); the latter of which SHE WAS by Chalafas. JUST AS there was Herod ANTIPATER (father), Herod ANTIPAS, Herod ARCHELAUS, Herod PHILIP (sons), and TWO Herod AGRIPPA (one grandson the other cousin).

Professor Tabor's joke about the "minor" apostles is good, but the BBC doesn't run "commercials" on its channels. It may seem a pedantic point but reminds us how little we may know of cultures that we assume to be similar to our own.

As someone who does genealogy, you CAN have two brothers marry two sisters and have kids with the same names. I'm not sure how common any of these name were before Jesus...but Christianity really narrowed the naming game for quite a few cultures. French for example, many are named Marie-something or Jean-something.
I like the simplicity of combining the two Marys, but I think we need more primary sources.
Also, if Simion was a (half) brother of Jesus, wouldn't the writer say that? Do we know if Jewish culture used different words to convey biological family from community family? Maybe Brother and Cousin are not biological terms?

Notice in the Last Supper that DaVinci clearly chose to depict the 'end' of the meal. Well according to the Gospel narrative, that DaVinci would have surely known, Judas had long gone to "betray" Jesus and would not return. - So If Judas is not there then who is the 'twelfth' depicted in this painting?

    • @Ken_Scaletta

The paintings of the last supper are all made by gentiles (predominantly catholic) who know nothing about the Passover. They didn't sit at a table with chairs. That's a western assumption. They were sitting on the floor reclining..perhaps with cushions..because when you eat the Passover meal you recline symbolizing the position of a relaxed "free man". "Slaves" didn't eat that way. All renditions kinda show them slouching (weirdly) while sitting in chairs..its like the artist knew they should be sitting "differently" but made the mistake of assuming that meant it was at one big long high table.

@@Adunb78 ty Cobry. This topic seems too trivial to dig into for many ..but getting the setting and atmosphere of the last supper right helps build a better picture in your mind of what it was really like that evening.
Matthew 26: 20 says " When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve."
It does say there was a "table" ..but scripture also tells us they were "reclining"..so a "table" that could accomodate that many was probably not 1 table it was most likely 3 or 4 smaller ones pushed together and they had to be low tables because the diners were basically lounging on the floor.
God required all jewish males to show up in Jerusalem for Passover. So that meant Jesus and His disciples had to walk approx 65 miles from the Galilee region to Jerusalem Many jews had come from even further away. And if you lived in Jerusalem you were expected to make room for all these travelers (a million or more) coming in. There were no "hotels" ..maybe a few small "inns" but not nearly enough to accomodate over a million people..so if you lived in Jerusalem it was expected that you open your home for any travelers coming to town. There were 3 feasts (out of the 7 listed in Leviticus) that God required they go to Jerusalem for each year so if you lived in Jerusalem you were very used to having guests come to your home to stay for the duration of that particular feast. Jesus sent some disciples ahead to make the arrangements at someones home and they were given the "upper room". In all probability that same home had guests in every room of the house ..not just the upper room. This "upper room" may have been an actual room upstairs in the house but its most probable the home had a flat roof ..and it was typical for flat roofed homes to have like a covered pergola or patio up on the roof. It was considered a "room" of the home. (This type of home with a flat roof patio on top was built that way for a couple reasons 1) a covered pergola or patio made for extra space to eat or visit for the family living there but it primarily was designed that way to accomodate the celebrating of the feast of Tabernacles (celebrated in the fall and it too was one of the feasts that required all jews make a trip to Jerusalem for...which Jesus did).
Sorry for the information overload Cobry. Thanks for listening. See you in heaven my friend.
To God be the Glory! Amen ✡✝

Let us take the cat out of the bag. I see many Jews, most of them scholar, and people of science debating about the NT and many things that according to their scientific knowledge are not real. That is good because I am also a man of science. That said, bring me to the following: What is the scientific opinion of these people of science about the fonder of Judaism, Abraham? Do they consider him to be a mentally ill person, since he heard voices telling him to commit murder? If they say yes to this question, the culture and religious beliefs of Judaism is wrong, and baseless, since the founder was a mental.

If we assign Virgo responsible for half of that V then it fits. Virgo is next to Leo on the Zodiacal belt. So lets take a look. Twelve constellations personified human. What makes it work when put into continual motion, Precession. Axial tilt of the earth ranging 22.5 - 24.5 degrees with a 23.5 degree tilt common. Rotating, revolving and a wobble. So is the V referencing tilt. Next, the Table a long flat horizontal plane, earth's equator and when projected out into the cosmos it becomes the Celestial equator. The movement mentioned and the tilt causes the rise and lowering of that equator as we move thru the Great Wheel, completing renders a Great Year, 25,920 solar years. It has four seasons of 6,480 solar years and of course each season has 3 months of 2,160 years each. Four fixed signs mark the four seasons. Aquarius, Scorpio (often symbolized by the eagle or vulture because of Aguila), Leo and Taurus. Note the artwork showing the four evangelists with their corresponding symbols. Of course Mathew is pinned to Aquarius the face and sometimes body of man with wings, Aquarius begins the Great Year as it ends with Pisces the fish. So below that table of Da Vinci's piece are four table legs although Pillars is more precise. They represent what? The four seasons! Except for Leo all the fixed signs are above and aligned with their pillar. So what's up with Leo. Folks I believe we're looking at a calendar if you will. Note the countenance of Leo, a scowl and he's holding a dagger. Virgo is leaning over his pillar. I think its showing an event probably on an apocalyptic scale 12,960 years ago at the Virgo / Leo juncture. Would not be surprised if its exactly what we see at Giza, Leo with that slightly hinted gracile face. If its not the face of Virgo then its what is across the belt from Leo, Aquarius. Note the angled headdresses of the Egyptian, think of precession above, and at the mid-way point of that Great Year a cyclic disaster, The serpent is always dead center of their headdresses. Wisdom? Knowledge or better yet understanding? Maybe but of what. Why all the unimaginable capital projects in both hemispheres. I'm always reminded of the simple Boy Scout motto because high culture, its cities and institutions are capable of total obliteration in the twinkling of an eye, save a remnant. So of the twelve which is the bridgebuilder (Priest)? What with wings symbolically bridges the seasons, the months the Ages whereby little children (Mankind) is brought out of the last Great Year into the New to rinse and repeat. Ain't but one, Aquarius. Without genealogy because of a cyclic apocalypse at the Pisces / Aquarius cusp and again at the mid mark with Virgo / Leo leaving absolutely nothing but a remnant. The Precession never stops never breaks, it is continual, it has no beginning or end of days, one might say and in fact someone did, a Priest continually. Bridging above and below. Those four pillars and the four corners they form supporting a dome ceiling are interesting as well, especially when you are inside a 16th century church looking up at four symbols and their corresponding avatar. One with book open taking dictation by a winged something doing the dictating.

The church created a Jesus that would be the greatest of Roman idols. To accomplish this they removed the humanity from divinity of Jesus so that the great idol might serve an imperial power.
James Tabor creates a Jesus based in philosemitism. Similar but opposite to the church, he removes the divinity from the humanity of Jesus in order to serve a power. He ascribes to Jesus the basest of human ambition and essentially turns him into no more than a numbered and tagged pottery shard.

Researching my family history, it is quite difficult when 2 brothers, or 2 sisters, each have over half a dozen children, and each name their children using the same names in roughly the same order (maybe differentiated only by male'female birth order!). If Joseph's and Cleophas' wife were not the same Mary, they may still have called their children by same names, but if Joseph, by Mary, begat children in the name of his deceased brother, he could easily have used the same list of boys' names to name his own and his brother's children.

Also, although I think it is more complicated than this, If Clophas was brother to Joseph, then their wives would become sisters when they married Clophas and Joseph, would they not? This appears to be the way 'sister' is used in some parts of Britain for at least several hundred years, so why not Palestine in 100 AD. However, I am inclined to think that whichever of Joseph and Clophas died first, the other was obligated to marry the dead brother's wife and continue the family 'in the name of the brother' : that would mean that if Joseph fathered, by Mary, 3 sons in the name of Clophas, those 3 sons would be sons of Clophas, and of Mary, and of Joseph (and of God, if you believe we are all God's children).

James cannot have been the "beloved disciple" and author of the Gospel of John. The narrative doesn't fit. "For His brethren didn't believe in Him" (John 7:5). Why wouldn't he have written "For we didn't believe in Him"? This guy's making things up for what reason? If the Gospel of John is written by James then so is First John because the author uses the same language as the author of the Gospel. Every gear in this machine clashes and grinds to powder if James was the author of the Gospel According to John. It's amazing what you can learn simply by reading the material.

The 3rd time I attempted & was bold enough 12/22/04 to call out leviathan thru later in time find out my rituals used are exactly the same that Solomon used to conjure demons , & 8hrs after symbol was drawn & material used drawing the symbol was the very same ? As well as enchanting with riddle/ryme in repeatedly in 3 invoke the rain to be sent ,. & 8 hrs later a goldish fog came misting then 72hrs later a 5inch rain storm ,twice previously occured , only in a 3mile radius which even the weather channel found bizarre showing this 1dot n green appearing in the desert , & nothing green for hundreds of miles , ? Anyway , the original reason for out of the blue testing this ritual is even more than strange and another story in it self , return back , on 12/22/04 I performed the ritual , & my buddy Eric & his mom showed up , & both stayed the night (moving away from area)( & were present 8hrs to witness fog mist , & I went out side & it happened ,so I went inside & told him , right in the middle of me awaking Eric ,my tv was on history channel , & suddenly the commentary on TV says do u know what the hell your doing ? Those raindrops are how many angels in legions u have ? U have a direct line to the top of 12 level !! U just don't say anything like two people having coffee & chatting ! My buddy instantly awake & Eric says y is the TV cussing u out ? & His mom says yeah wtf? , Suddenly the TV show goes to a commercial advertising a book Angel & demons , Eric right as b4 he left , asks me what I meant about leviathan ? I said I'm bringing posideon here alot of rain , he said the day b4 the 9.1 earthquake 12/25/04 do u mean a tsunami? I didn't reply , & thinking to myself what the hell is a tsunami? Matthew 1:18-25
This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.
As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through His prophet [Isaiah]:
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.’”
When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

God bestowed favor upon Mary. She was a good girl and obeyed God. That obedience also includes one of the 10 commandments that say "Thou shalt not fornicate".
The angel confirms the virgin birth between Joseph and Mary. One of the angels told Joseph not to put Mary away and to marry and embrace her as a wife because she is carrying a Holy child with a wonderful mission. One that the world has never seen before a miracle birth. God created man and he can without a doubt place his seed within Mary" s womb with just a thought. Wow Satan loves to help spread the lies about Jesus. Read the scripture the truth is in plain sight.
Here is your proof of what the "Good Book" the Holy Bible says
Matthew 1:25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
Mr. James Tabor is a wonderful historian but even the very best of historians lack the faith.
    MATTHEW 1:1-25
    Conception and Birth of Jesus
18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
23“BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”
24And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,
25but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

@@Geraldinopauldesouza Yeah, Dr. Tabor is a critical scholar and is not a believer. He is a historian, not a theologian. Everything he's saying is well within the mainstream of New Testament scholarship and the historical-critical scholarship of Christian origins. It may surprise you to know it, but the vast majority of New Testament scholars regard the Virgin Birth stories as mythical accretions, not history. It's a late developing tradition found only in Matthew and Luke. It is unknown by Paul, mark or John, the latter two of who both show discomfort with Jesus' parentage and geographical origin. I would recommend a book called "Birth of the Messiah." written by a famous and well-respected New Testament scholar and Catholic Priest named Raymond Brown. "Birth of the Messiah" is considered a seminal work in scholarship on the Nativity narratives and how they should be understood as literary and theological constructions (like parables), not as literal history.

There is NO way that the brothers of Jesus were among the 12 disciples who were with him in ministry for 3 years. In Mark 3 the 12 disciples are listed in v 14-19. Then in v 21 and v 31-35 Jesus' brothers were mentioned as coming with Mary to take him home and Jesus refuses to see them. If his brothers were of the 12 they would already be inside. Tabor knows this and is simply lying. If the "brothers" were sons of Clophus, not Joseph, and Mary, the oldest, James, could be no older than 17, since Joseph was still alive when Jesus was 12. Even if Joe croaked the day after passover there would be some mourning , a wedding and a 9 month pregnancy. Jesus is 30 when he begins his ministry. 30-12 =18 - a year for pregnancy and wedding. The other boys could be no older then than 16, 15, and 14. Tabor is just making stuff up. Teen age kids were not in the disciples.

There’s zero writings inside and outside the Bible in early Christianity differentiating those 3 brothers from apostles. No writings of those apostles. Instead Heggesipius, Papias, in the beginning in the second century and Hippolytus in the end of the second century say those brothers are the sons of Clopus and his wife Mary. And Hippolytus death of James son of Alpheus matches Josephus death. Eusebius the great 4th century historian affirms these writings. And says there’s 2 James. Son of Zebedee and the brother. Both died in Jerusalem. Says nothing about a separate 3 apostles. Only talks about the 3 brothers.

@@CPATuttle Now for a CPA you are a pretty bad liar. I Just gave you definitive proof that Jesus' brothers can NOT be among the 12 apostles. Superman and Clark Kent cannot be in the same place at the same time because THEY are the same person. The brothers of Jesus were with Mary Outside the house at the same time as the apostles were inside with Jesus. They cannot be 2 places at once. So you and Eusebius are liars and not very bright. Eusebius was writing 300 years after the fact so his accounts and guesses are useless as evidence. It would be like you writing an account of who were the the founding father's aides at the signing of the Declaration of Independence based on a few schoolbooks from the Civil war era.
Mark 3: 31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.
33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?
34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
The disciples were already with Jesus. Look above in the same chapter.

The idea that Jesus's disciples could not have been brothers of his aged 14 or 15 seems strange. If they hadn't been with him, they would certainly have been working by that age: early Galileans had no conception of "being a teenager".

@@chrisbirmingham5132 Look you are either very stupid or you are being deliberately dishonest and disingenuous. Yes the age of the brothers of Jesus IF they were sons of Cleopas and not Joseph is by far the weaker of the two arguments I made as to why the brothers were NOT among the 12 disciples of Jesus. BUT it is also the by far the less important one, as you well know. You failed to address the fact that the Bible accounts in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and John plainly say that Jesus’ brothers or even cousins if you like, were NOT among the 12 apostles at any point of his ministry. That fact is independent of WHO the men' father was or HOW old they were.
      1) As I already said in my comments, Mark 6 makes it clear that when Mary and Jesus’ brothers came to see him and asked to be let in the house, the disciples were already inside with Jesus. Verses 14-19 list the disciples by name. It is James the son of Alphaeus , Thaddeus (or Jude) and Simon the Canaanite who Tabor would say were Jesus brothers/cousins, but the text does not mention this at all. See verse 18. In verse 18 it clearly says that they all go into a house. Then 3 groups show up to yell at Jesus. a) His friends from Nazareth who say he is crazy and needs to be taken away. (v 21) b) some Pharisee scribes or rabbis that say Jesus has a demon 9 v. 22-30) and finally c) in v 31 his brothers and mother show up to see him and presumably take him home like his “friends.” Jesus denies them entry but all the disciples are already inside! How dumb do you have to be to think that James and Simon and Judah can be 2 places at once?!
      2) Matthew 13:53-57 The people at Nazareth reject Jesus as being the Messiah since" 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” IF James and Judah and Simon are disciples why do the men say that they and their sisters and their mother still all live right there in Nazareth??? The disciples went all over the country with Jesus.
      3) John 2: 12 states plainly that Jesus’ brothers were a different group from his disciples. “12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.”
      4) In John 7:1-10, Jesus’ brothers openly call him a coward for avoiding Judea where the rabbis had put out a “hit” contract on him (v1). Verse 5 says clearly that none of his 4 brothers believed in Jesus during his ministry. Read it and repent of this foolish lie.
5)In Acts 1:13-14 Luke lists the disciples all by name and then in verse 14 says Jesus’ brothers were a separate group with Mary, NOT the 12. Also, among the 12 there were 3 sets of brothers mentioned explicitly in the Gospels (James and John, Peter and Andrew, and James and Judas). There were also 2 Simon’s, two James’ and 2 Judas’ - out of 12 people! These were very common names. Having 3 of Jesus’ brothers share names with the 12 is NOT surprising. Also IF James and Simon and Judas among the 12 are Jesus’ brothers why 1) does Luke not just say so and WHY does Luke in Acts 1:13 ID James and Judas as brothers but NOT Simon??? Get a clue.
Oh, on the age of the brothers IF they were sons of Mary by a SECOND marriage to Cleopas or Alphaeus -- Joseph has to die first. the SOONEST Joeseph could die was when Jesus was 12. The Only traditional age I could find anywhere for Joseph's death was when Jesus was 21 in a 4th century Coptic tradition. That would mean that James, the oldest, could be no more than 8 years old when Jesus started his ministry IF that was true. I would not put much stock in that though since it had Joseph at age 90 marrying Mary at age 12 and dying at 111. If that was the case, Nazareth would certainly NOT have remembered Joseph as the carpenter but rather as the cradle robber or the lucky old stiff. Not much chance that is true either.

"Why would Jesus turn the community over to His brother?" Who said Jesus turned the community over to James? That's something you made up out of your imagination. James took over but after the other apostles abandoned the job, when the money ran out. James was the heir apparent, who seems to have ridden the coat tails of his older Brother to the top of the heap. Under James, priests and pharisees were admitted to the church and this is when it became a defacto sect of Judaism. Now that is indeed found in the bible - in the Acts of the Apostles.

There was no lack in Acts 4. By Acts 5, Annias and Saphira were put to death for lying to the Holy Ghost, reserving money from the sale of their property and saying they gave it all to the apostles, like Barnabas did.
Acts 6, now there is lack. Was it because the apostles didn't like the Hellenistic Jewish widows like those widows thought or was it because of scarcity? Socialism fails every time it's tried and the church is no exception. If the money ran out at the same time the number of people joining the church increased, that makes for a perfect storm. The apostles decided to turn the job over to other men. They "devoted themselves to the word of God and prayer". At the same time this was all going on, priests were joining the church (Acts 6:7). They come into play a little later.
Acts 8, Peter travels to Samaria, leaving Jerusalem. The disciples had tarried in Jerusalem as Jesus instructed them to do until they had received power from on high. The power they received was about the same power they had had prior to this during Jesus' ministry. They could cast out devils and healed before this and so they were probably wondering if they were going to receive a power they didn't know anything about. They tarried in Jerusalem that whole time. Acts 8, Peter wanders off. Who knows who else left but we know Peter did. He met Simon the Sorcerer, who offered him money for the ability to give people the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. This was a temptation to solve the financial crisis brewing in Jerusalem but Peter refused to commoditize the power of God (Catholics and Pentecostals take note). Peter passed the test.
As far as we know the rest of the apostles were still in Jerusalem. We know that Steven was killed and Philip wandered off. Both of these men had been put in charge of food distribution.
Peter turns up in Joppa and then goes to Caesarea, in Acts 10, where he converts Cornelius and his house. That conversion rocked his world because for the first time, gentiles were speaking in tongues - the miraculous manifestation of the Holy Spirit had fallen upon them. In Acts 11, Peter is back in Jerusalem recounting everything that happened to him in Caesarea. Those in Jerusalem were "of the circumcision". That means more than mere Jews. That means that this Christian church had become a defacto sect of Judaism. The priests who were joining up in Acts 6 changed the culture. Do you think these priests who joined the church gave up their jobs? Maybe so but someone was pressuring the church to be a Jews only club. Peter's story about Cornelius was a major paradigm shift.
Acts 11 verifies what I believe is under the text so far. The money had run out. The last couple verses of Acts 11 say it out loud. The Jerusalem church is broke - out of funds.
Acts 11:29-30 - Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:
30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
The Apostle James is killed in Acts 12. This eliminates the possibility that the James referred to in the subsequent chapters is the brother of John. This James was killed by Herod. Was this the same Herod who Pilate consulted? If so then Herod is out of his jurisdiction or else the apostles were now in Galilee. I haven't studied that part much. There does seem to be some indication of this because the last verse says that Paul and Barnabas returned FROM Jerusalem. So these folks were not in Jerusalem at the time. All signs point to Galilee.
By Acts 15 now James is the top dog and giving his "sentence" on the matter of gentiles remaining uncircumcised. James himself talks about Peter's conversion of Cornelius and his household as if he'd heard that account first hand. James probably was there in Acts 11 when Peter was telling the story. But whether he was or not, Acts 15 is where the curtain is fully lifted on the brother of Jesus. Paul verifies this by his account given in the Book of Galatians. Piecing these two accounts together is a little tricky but it can be done.
So we can only guess but knowing people and seeing the situation on the ground (as reported by Luke) the church at Jerusalem was a mess. It was so bad the apostles fled the scene. Whether that was a good thing or a bad thing is for God to judge but it happened. James (it seems to me) was kind of the last man standing. They probably offered him the job and he took it. I call it "riding the coat tails of Jesus" but it could have been an organic adoption. I know that if the brother of Jesus was a candidate for head honcho of my church, I don't know if I'd object to that. It probably was not a democratic process but the apostles were done with that mess. James didn't do it for the money. There was no money. Did he do it for the prestige? Who knows? He had the prestige, though, as Paul points out in Galatians. Both Peter and James were "pillars of the church".
So it's a judgment on my part, I'll admit but it meshes with what I've read and studied now for many years.

There are indications that IF this was ALL just the result of a CONSPIRACY 😎 there was NO "church" in the "First Christian Century" period, NOR a JESUS who allegedly started it. NOT UNTIL the BEGINNING of the "SECOND".
