- I wanted to block off the intakes and slow the flow down in this tank. I was adding some fish that needed these adjustments and decided to share a video about it. Im really happy with how it turned out.

I had to put the tiny pump on my main list the link was broken.
Here is an amazon affiliate link for the tank kit. I do make a small amount when you visit.

If you want to reduce the flow you could keep the oem pump and drill a small hole in the pipe from the pump so some of the flow is just returned to the pump chamber, if you want to undo this or make it adjustable just place a cable tie over the pipe and move it over the hole to partly block it.
Perfect! I ended up drilling two holes (small ones) in mine. Have shrimp in that tank and the flow was just too much!. Thank you!!
Better still replace the pump with an eheim 1000 and you can adjust the flow to your hearts content
For anyone watching now, these lights CAN grow lights, as long as you stick with low-tech and low-light types. My flex grew a jungle of java moss, pearlweed, and guppy grass. It also is supporting several crypts and clumps of subwassertang.
I've grown stem plants like rotala macrandra green and h'ra too in them too. So the lights work, but of course, strong lights could be better.
Mine has been going for just about a year, and has supported dwarf sag, java moss and fern, and some anubias. Also, likely most common forms of algae. That's with a 4 on, 4 off, 4 on, 12 off time schedule too!
I know this video is old but I’m very glad you did this! I watched your unboxing and you sold me on this tank for my Betta with some snails and maybe eventually some shrimp. Not many people go this into depth over one tank. Just inbox, set it up, show an after, and give a review. Thanks for putting so much work into helping those of us who would never think of these things. Huge thumbs up!!
Just for anyone needing smaller vent holes in this tank, if you call Fluval they will direct you to Hagen and there is a page on there that you can fill out and upload your receipt to them and they will send you little clip on vent covers that have smaller holes for free. I got mine in a couple of days. Baby fish could still get through but it's much better than before.
thanks for letting us know!
You're very welcome. If you do have baby fish or baby shrimp there is room to put a piece of foam behind the vent cover for even more protection.
No bother at all. I did call them first so you might want to start with that. Canada Customer Service (Parts and Warranties): 1-800-554-2436 or USA Customer Service : 1-800-724-2436 . I'm in Canada so I went to www.hagen.com. They told me to click on FAQ, then can't find an answer at the top right of the page and then fill out the information and send it. Hope that helps.
Just received my new Flex 15 Gallon and it does now come with the additional clip on vent covers, yea!
I just ordered my Flex tank a few weeks back, and the clip on covers were provided with the tank which was awesome!! Also what I did to adjust the flow for my Betta, I just clipped the props of the impeller from 6 down to 3. It has helped BIG TIME! And my Betta is one happy camper :)
You've highlighted an issue that many manufacturers seem to have not considered when designing nano tanks. I've had to use extra sponges and filter wool to make some of my tanks safe for shrimp. I'm sure your video will help lots of people, thanks.
+mummaV2 thanks for stopping by!
Very clever (and obviously necessary in your case) mods to this tank. It's surprising that the aquarium isn't designed in such a way as to safeguard against tiny fish and shrimp from sneaking into the filter area. Fluval must know that this is the kind of aquatic life most aquarists are going to keep in a Flex. Good job on the mods!
+Aquatasy I was surprised too. The space in the back is kind of huge too. I thought it should be doing something.
Aquatasy I know it sounds silly, but whenever there are huge gaps like that in filter areas, I just toss in a bunch of Matrix or ceramic beady thingies anyway. No wasted space allowed!
@@AvyFerg Does that not make it difficult getting everything in and out? I like the idea though!
I got the 15 and the 9g version. haven't started them up yet but now I got some mods thanks to you. Thanks man! the foam mod is definitely what I'm going to need
My galaxies/CPDs and betta all thank you (as for I). What I love is that it adds water cleany goodness as well.
My LFS recommended some mods and I’ve now got foam blocking off the vents in my left compartment. I used the foam block that came with the Flex and an additional piece to get all the way to the bottom. My middle compartment is now full to the brim with bags of ceramic media and the tank is doing great. I’ve modded the flow by cutting a slot in a piece of coarse sponge and placing this over the flow nozzles so the flow is now lessened and directed down rather like on the Fluval Edge.
I just bought one of these tanks in the UK and it came with the filter hole covers, I just added filter floss to stop my shrimp escaping
OK DON'T DO THIS. Use a much coarser foam, not fine filter floss, as it quickly gets clogged, filliing up the waterline and emptying the tank onto the desk / floor. luckily i was here at the time this happened
protopigeon appreciate the update 🙌🏻
@@protopigeon thank you for the warning. Never thought of that!
Fluval is one of the very very very few (if not the only one)companies that actually listen to their customers and make improvements based on.the feedback they receive
If that were true they would supply a totally silent pump
I just got the 9g tank and it comes with a safeguard for the vents now.
D
Same thing with the 15g and the holes behind the Safeguard are smaller as well. I actually cut a couple pieces of filter floss and put them between the filter and the guard, I have had to replace it every few weeks but it does well to keep the water crystal clear.
Same for the 15 gal😌 now comes with a thing over vents
@@kyliee3047 ordering this tank from petco, it comes with a guard on the 15?
@@alexandralugosi yes, both vents in the back have a plastic thing on it that u can move up or down
thanks for the idea of getting a new adjustable pump. even with fluval's new adjustments with the flex, and moving the valves up, the flow is just way too much for my betta. i've tried to move the valves to direct them towards the walls, i've moved them so that they're directly hitting a plastic 'betta leaf bed' to slow the flow, and i think it's just definitely a better idea to get another low flow pump.
There are also pre filter sponges that can be put on the spouts (opposite of the intended side) that cut the flow a lot.
@@pecktec Thanks for replying! I've literally shoved so many sponges in the filter area, and honestly still think there's too much flow, especially for my passive lazy betta. Putting pre-filter sponges on the spouts themselves is definitely an interesting idea... I've had the tank set up for months but only recently bought my betta. It's hard for him to catch the food when it's swirling around on top, and he mostly stays to the left side of the tank... I've heard Fluval has done some adjustments to the Flex in the past year, so I need to pull out the pump to see if it's using an adjustable one since I can't remember from when i set it up.
@@Jay_801 what kind of adjustments? The pump in my Flex hasn't flow regulation.
Great mods! I have a fluval flex 15 in my bedroom. It's stocked with a couple sparkling gouramis, a scarlet badis, a few ruby tetras ( had 7 but some died, go figure) and 3 African dwarf frogs. I've had every everyone, even the frogs, explore the back part before the filter. The funny part is even the frogs are able to escape out through the grates on the bottom! My gouramis even seem to like going back through the top part to chill out. I'll probably have to make a sponge mod for at least cleaning the filter( the fish REALLY love to swim all the way to the pump area and get stuck) I'll definitely look into getting an LED suction mod for the top! Underneath the sponge filter part I put the biomedia that came with the tank at the bottom and covered it with some filter floss.
This is a cool looking tank I love how you changed things round you've given me a few ideas for when I change the side chick from a saltwater tank to a freshwater tank 🤗🤗
Hey that way you blocked the holes for the filter was excellent. thanxs
Sean, i've had good success with gel superglue and black craft mesh, i'm sure there's a way to make a sliding mount method as well to allow for easier cleaning. Craft mesh was a buck or two at wally world and came in black or clear.
+Evan Stepowany ahhh yes that stuff is great. Good idea.
I have one of these and have blocked off the bottom vent and added a fine mesh to the top vent .
I have added a bigger one of the lights he showed as it is more controlled have the original pump and have sorted out the angles for the spray bar and its all good .
Also added a UV lamp to the center section obviously i had to block part off to keep the light in and redirect the water flow slightly made a big difference to water quality.
And incase your wondering I have a shit load of small ghost tetra and white Mountain minoes , also have a beta and a knife fish in there and they are all doing fine.
I would say the blocking off of the bottom vent didn't reduce the amount of water flowing but it does reduce the speed of the flow around the middle and bottom of the tank .
I don't have this tank, but one that has a similar filtering system and pump, but I ditched the pump completely and put a sponge filter in its place, and shockingly, the elbow fit the sponge filter tube perfectly.
I moved neons out of this tank for that very reason, but the four dwarf gourami and blue ram love this tank, wish I would have thought of that before
I recently got a light very similar from Juwel. it's the Novolux series. Got the biggest one, 68 centimers. It's bright as crazy. Also replaced both T8's. One daylight, other color enhance. But the led is out shining them quite a bit. Great for daylight!
I disgarded the lid on the 15 and added a nice eheim led. The one large anubia now takes up the entire tank with leaves coming out of the water. Swiss Tropicals makes great filters and materials. I learned about this company watching these excellent Pecktec videos. I changed out the stock pump with a higher flow since it slowly died and replaced the filter sponge in the center compartment with better quality sponge from Swiss Tropicals. I should point out that the lighting on the larger 32.5 flex is far superior to the 9 or 15 flex.
I discarded my lid for this one as well. The mega one is way better. I put a glass top on for jumpers and evaporation.
@@pecktec If you're still checking comments here, I'm curious if you can share more about the lid and light you decided to use instead of the kit lid/light.
@@jeremiahcaven7299 in the end with that one I had a piece of glass cut and attached a Kessle that I moved off another tank. I personally love the Fluval smart lights (all of them) they grow plants and do cool things like ramp up and down.
the amazon link for the tiny pump is broken, what was the name of the model?
I bought a used 9 and 15 gallon and removed the filter compartment on both and use a sponge filter instead.
Painted the back matte black, made a clear lid out of glass(with a hinge so a portion of the front could be lifted for feeding,I prefer a clear lid so more light gets into the tank, and I need a tight fit to avoid creatures escaping).
I set a cheap nicrew light on top with the extensions pushed all the way in to set it a bit higher up.
The tank looks amazing!
I’d love to do this to the 32 gallon as well but have some concerns about the strength of the sealant used on it.
I’d try resealing but I’m worried about the curved glass in the front .
Would love to see more people sharing their tank modifications!
Thanks for posting this(albeit several years ago now 😅).✌️
Yeah clear lid for sure! I went that way too eventually. How was it pulling out the filter stuff? Not hard?
@@pecktec not hard at all.
A sharp razor blade, acetone and some paper towels is all you need.
Take care along the seams(the bead that holds the glass panels together).
If you’ve ever resealed a tank before, this will be super easy.
Doesn’t take long to remove the baffle.Just run the blade along the sealant that’s holding it in place and pull it out. Then scrape the remaining sealant off
with the razor blade.
Use the acetone to remove any remaining residue and rinse the tank well after. :)
@@CathyAinsworth thanks!
The vent covers are still too large for the little guys. I inserted filter media into them. Works great and takes no space from the back.
I notice that no one ever seems to mention that the powerhead included has no venturi option which is really thoughtless imo. If you're starting one of these up I highly recommend changing the powerhead as well to one with a venturi feature.
Also do yourself a favor and heat with a small heater on the left hand side if you use the giant center filter it comes with. As it becomes clogged it lowers the water level on the right hand side which is no bueno for your heater.
Pectek As far as growing plants it dose Farley well , I've had to split off my cripts two times and trim the java moss that is doing really well. But I've run into a problem with low ph and my cherry shrimp are breeding and on absorbing all the calcium leading to low ph, so I replaced the charcoal with crushed coral in a pantiehoe sock on Saturday , hopefully it will help they even sell a protein skimmer , UV sterilizer, and special water change pumps for auto water changes. The mods go on and on.
How’s it going!! Our fluval flex mod videos have been fighting back and forth for rank positions haha! Have you checked out my videos on the fluval flex mods? I have a friend who 3D prints upgrades for these such as fine screens for the intakes so fry and fish don’t get sucked up, lid props to hold up the lids, amongst many many other modifications! You should check out my vids and see what you think!
I just got the 9g flex for my grandmother today , starting a freshwater planted aquarium for her :D
+Josh SaltEmpire Duval very cool I haven't seen the 9 yet.
Ill be uploading some videos soon the tank is cycling now !
@pecktec First of all... compliments to you and your channel. A lot of information that helps me starting up a tank.
I know we're almost 2 years further, but I just want to mentioned (also for people who are interested in the Fluval Flex), is that Fluval created a solution for both vents you're mentioning in the video at 0:48.
They made 2 little caps with smaller vents and placed them on top of the existing vents.
Just an FYI though ;-)
Yeap those were included with models after this one. We noticed next time we opened one.
@@pecktec Ahh, Ok! Cool... Thanks again for all everyone so far!
Love this tank, I have the 9 gal.
Just put screen door screen over the intake grates and adhere it with silicone around the edges. Problem solved without sacrificing water flow.
That would look unsightly. If that sort of thing matters to you, just put the mesh on the inside.
Thanks for this great video, knowing that I need to mod the Flex before buying one was a great help. What I did is buy a 5 x 12 piece of filter foam block. Cut it in half so I had (2) 2.5 x 6 pcs and channeled the bottom pc to fit over the fin in housing. I never plan on removing the bottom pc, but I can still remove and clean the top as needed. Thanks again!
+Squid Tickler sounds like it would work well.
Yes, it does. Tank is stocked now and no lost shrimp or fish to be had :)
Good advice. Why doesn't fluval get it and put a flow control knob etc in their many different tanks since I read and watch about how people are constantly modifying the filter glow issues? Thanks
drill small holes in pump hose
Even with the guards, my white clouds occasionally will find their way in the filter. Had one stuck on the sponge for a week before I found him (miraculously he made it) I put filter floss between the guard and the actual vent and that saved it (plus great polishing)
I have the 15g with a betta and some roommates. The betta seems to love the water flow. The only thing I did was turn the heads up to reduce it just a bit
U could also drill a couple holes in the top and zip tie some extra lighting
What kind of pump is that? Do you have a link for it?
I find the stock pump is 1) extremely loud and 2) keeps getting clogged
where is the answer?
If any help I have the EHEIM CompactON 300 which is practically silent.
cmon pecktec what is it?
Regarding making the feeding port secure for jumpers and crawlers. I got some fine, soft, black plastic mesh from eBay and cut it a bit larger than the hole and cemented it in place on the inside with aquarium silicone. Neither my Endlers nor my Nerite are now going to accomplish The Great Escape!
What a fantastically useful video! Thanks so much for the new tips. You've already convinced me that I need those submersible lights in my life.
Pecktec I’ve placed 2 squares of bioplus coarse filter over my jets. It’s dispersed the flow so my Betta is not getting blown around as much. Only disadvantage is I’ve had to add an airline as the is very little surface movement
Good info. I had some little covers on my grates. I put down inside to l those as a prefilter.
Also My remote control lights broke within 3 months. I replaced them with something like you showed but I was able to put them in the bracket for the old ones. The one I got from Amazon also has a cool timer with sunrise to white then to blue then off at night.
I really like the flex
I did similar put foam on side of first chamber there is a fin that holds them in there as well
We stuff our first champer full of polly fil, makes the tank crystal clear and slows down the flow
I wonder if they have since changed the type of pump hose used on their range, to one that is rated 'food safe' to stop that quick build up of (harmless) white fungus which flakes off and flushes into the tank. Thanks for the video.
I did something similar with the filter, only I got a large filter pad and folded it in thirds and put it in the large chamber. The problem is that it doesn't sit snug against the slots like yours does, I'll try cutting the middle as you did. Also, what is that disgusting goop on the filter tubing? The first time I took mine out I thought I must have left some type of paper wrapping on it when I installed it, but no, there was nothing to remove from the second one I put together. The flow is fine for the fish I currently have, but clever mod. I thought you were going to suggest drilling holes in the tube.
+Lelani Dixon I have no idea what the goop is. When I set it up I used a water clearing agent so I could get a good shot of it that night. So I assumed it way from that. Pretty crazy though.
mine had exactly same crud all over it!
Mine had that crud too. Tore it apart to clean it and the goop hasn't come back, but it's only been 3 weeks.
Yeah, I didn't add anything to the tank that would have caused the disgusting goopy stuff. I really think it's a coating on the tube itself, though when I set up my second Flex, I couldn't see anything to remove when it was new. After removing it once, I've never seen it reappear.
happens on certain kinds of materials in tanks.. happens on my co2 system suction cups in my 72g. Just one of them things haha
I've just got this tank and one of my Platy fish has twice already jumped into the rear compartments. I need to modify it
Great video, as always!
I've just a question about the pump: do you think that the pump of the Fluval Spec (5 gallon) could fix and work good in the Fluval Flex?
Fluval now includes these little clip on wiers that have a thinner passage for water
it still lets my adventurous neon tetras through :(
The crab is so cute :D
I've just got a 2nd hand Flex34 (sited bedside) and have had to add a very small internal filter (foam) with a venturi outlet, in order to get some aeration and is run along with the supplied pump - my transferred fishes were missing the aeration in my old tank provided the big internal filter. Don't know why Fluval don't offer the option of an add-on water outlet with venturi!
a new pump... exactly what I was hoping I wouldn't have to do lol
Lol it’s optional take that little prefilter out and it will work better.
@@pecktec thanks! I think I might also try to jam some sponge in the outlets 👍
Hi I basically followed your exact directions and fixed the big vents using a piece of foam and filter floss to hold it in place tightly. My question is, how often should I change the filter floss
thanks pectec! amazing video! hope to see more update on all your aquariums and especially this fluval flex!
Thanks! I just got the 9 Gallon and was wondering about some upgrades. I need to polish the water, badly. :D
Steve how about using a roundfluvslpre-filter over the outflow nozzles ? To slow theflow down?
pretty good idea how you blocked the filter intake, i want to buy a few of those for my Shrimps and need to block it off as well and i will do it exactly like you, thanks
Hi. I have the same Fluval tank as your showing in your video here. It's a nice little tank but there are a few problems with it in my opinion. If you block the intake flow with sponge etc to slow down the water flow the water behind the partition will still continue to be pumped out. This can cause the water level behind the partition to drop really low and expose the heater and the pump to the air. I nearly lost the heater because of this. I've since modified the tank and removed the partition completely which gives a lot more room and no scum build up behind the partition to clean. Now it's fitration is a sponge filter with a small powerhead which gives a lot better circulation and water clarity, there's also no chance of fish being drawn into a partition and trapped as happened in the past. It's now a good tank for young fish, no more hassle with water level drop or missing fry. I haven't tried planting in this tank yet, how did you get on with your plants? Any success with the lighting? I'm thinking low light plants might be ok with it.
That chamber the same on so many of these in tank filters, empty’s out first no matter what’s in front of it. Because of the effects of evaporating water. I’m not saying your proposed changes aren’t good and worth while. But that specific issue is present in all these tanks.
@@pecktec Hi Pecktec. In my case it wasnt due to evaporation. It was the reduced water flow coming in the vents and the pump still pumping out the same flow of water, emptying the partition because the water couldn't get back in fast enough. I like the Flex since I removed the partition and fitted a powerhead though. It's a good little tank.
I use a 12 inch (30cm) plastic ruler to prope open the aquarium lid
There is a space under the hood that allow Nerite snails to enter each of the filter compartments. Found a fish who went over the wall and got stuck back there also. This is an ongoing problem. Poor engineering. Shrimp can get back there no problem, but I don’t have any.
Really enjoying your videos. I have got myself a 9gal flex. Question about the nozzles. Do you aim it at the water surface to create surface tension? How do you ensure your water have enough oxygen?
I bought this tank for a rescue betta. Definitely too powerful of a current for bettas. I cut a corner off an aquarium sponge removed the ball joint part and shoved it in. Its perfect now
Yeap I like to use the foam intake covers to pull over the return.
Is it possible to make the outflow air-driven? Thinking of getting a Swiss Tropicals Jetlifter or something similar. I like the low flow of air-driven filtration.
I was close to trying that myself.
@Pecktec Please do a video just on your Pom Pom crabs those are some neat little critters,
Cool! check out the video before this one for more on them. ;)
in addition to the foam block described in the video, i lined the outflow clip on grids with scotch brite to prevent tiny shrimp from escaping
Hey Pecktec! I'm looking at doing my first live scape in the flex 15 and you have helped tremendously with learning about everything I need to get set up. One thing I wanted to ask about the flex, how loud is the pump? I have seen a few posts saying its a little loud for a bedroom tank.
I have heard that too. Mine was quiet (to me) before I changed the pump out. to me. but it was in a room with a bunch of other things so I cant say for sure how quiet.
I have a 15 in my bedroom and have no problem with noise from it.
Hi, I just got a flex 9 gallon for my betta, and yes the flow is crazy fast for the poor guy. Need a recommendation on a new filter pump. I new to trying to mod a tank. Right now I shoved a piece of polishing cloth in the filter outlet at the top, but I have to clean it out every couple of day, and I hate disturbing my betta like that. Hope you can help! Love your channel by the way. I just saw your blackwater vid. Uh oh,,,, I may want to try that in the future! lol
Grab a couple of prefilter sponges and put them on the part the water comes out of. Makes it nice an peaceful. Fluval makes some but there are better deals on eBay. They look like cylinders with a hole in the middle.
Thanks for putting up these videos.
+Jeremy VandenEykel :)
Perfect , I loved the ideas you shared this video was on 🔥
Any consideration to using the empty first chamber for foam, mechanical filtration, and stuffing the normal filter chamber with nodes ? We have both the 15 and two 9 gal for shrimp, betas, frogs. Well, not frogs and shrimp together. That ends nearly as badly as angelfish and shrimp..burp
Very educative,.thanks brother
What pump did you swap the original pump out for that you had that fit well?
I replaced it with an Eheim with similar (and adjustable) flow rate (250l/hr ?). Much quieter than the original one.
@@beejay1962 have you got the specific subtype name for the eheim? The Amazon link isn't working anymore and want to make sure I get one that'll actually fit the outflow.
@@emilyarmstrong6785 It's an Eheim CompactON 300 Pump (170-300L/H)
Glad to see mine isn't the only one with the goop around the filter tube.
I've done most of the same mods to my tank...The sponge down the back and filter floss and what not.
But I'm running into one issue that has me a little baffled and I'm not sure if anyone else has run into it... The water temperature? Even without the heater plugged in, the temperature creeps up to 81-82 degrees during the day...
+Sarah Elizabeth I wonder if that huge pump generates a lot of heat.
That's a possibility. It's a bit too strong for the 15 gallon. I'm new to aquariums (started in December) but this one has me a little baffled. The top of the hood feels warm too so I'm torn between the pump or oddly hot lights.
+Sarah Elizabeth add a thermometer to the back section where the pump is. See if it's warmer in there. If it's the source of heat it should be warmer. Also if there is a window near by sunlight can also cause tank warming. And terrible algae.
It was consistent throughout the tank with the temperature. I messaged Fluval about it, they said there shouldn't be any issues with any of it, the lights shouldn't produce heat, and the filter is the right size for the tank... When they asked how hot my room is, I told them we keep it at a 77 degrees... They said that was my problem and they have no suggestions for cooling it. I'm a little baffled by that.
I looked at the light you suggested and in the comments someone asked if it would support plant growth and someone else replied this Plants generally require broad spectrum light for growth. LEDs pretty much just emit a specific wavelength based on color. Ex.: In combination with other lighting, the blue could be a great addition to aid in photosynthesis due to the wavelength it emits, but would not provide enough varied wavelengths on its own for proper plant care."
So this doesn't sound like a great light to add to aid in plant growth.. do you have another suggestion?
I've watched your video several times, and with your measurements, you don't say how far down before we cut the 5" slot to go over the fin. Would you tell us this please.
I think the "fin" goes all the way down but Ill have to check I don't have it next to me. Sorry I cant remember.
Love your videos mane, keep them coming.
+P Nat will do!
Just got this today. Wondering which compartment you put the heater into. There is a potential cutout on the left side of the top so is that where the heater is supposed to go. Have the heater that was recommended but it has a water level max. thus making it higher than the back of the aquarium so the top doesn't fit. Help please
The spices I have in there like it cool so I didn’t put one in. My guess would be that first chamber. That’s what I did in the 16 gallon spec.
The Spec Vs have an output hose, over which one can put a sponge to moderate the flow. Could something similar be adapted to the Flex?
+Anthony Ragan sure but you need two. Or put a new spay bar in.
Just set mine up, the pump is a bit noisy for me, and im unsure about that filter inner wall, id prefer to throw a Tidal on it but then the lid wont go on, not too happy with this tank so far tbh
beautiful tank
+Wil Morales thanks!
I just found Flight Chops' doppelganger...
you should check out jenny's beta tank over at solid gold aquatics. she solved her flow problem by adding a sponge from a sponge filter to the output instead of the flex diverters.
+mark suson I do that in my spec five gallon but that brings it to almost no flow. So I'm this case is would have been to much. It's a great trick for bettas though.
LOL I gotta stop answering from my phone sooo many type-os!
Flex or Edge? ...thinking of getting back into the hobby after over 3 years without a tank.
+Todd Matthews I like the Flex a little better
i see a wheezywaiter shirt👀👀
Hi - just got back into fish keeping and by accident got a fluvial flex 15 gal - straight off I found a way to reduce the flow silently, just direct one of the adjustable nozzles back onto the black filter (not into the pump chamber - that's noisy) - voila - half the flow rate. also I dug out an odd bit of pvc (off-cut of curtain track in my case) cut a 1/4 inch slot in one end and a larger triangular slot in the other and again - voila - a prop to hold the tank lid up whilst working in it - how long? - I give up - how high do you want it to go? Happy fish keeping.
What do you mean by black filter? Are you referring to the intake?
no, direct one jet backwards onto the black sponge filter in the rear compartment, but make sure the water jet does not hit the top of the lid when it is back in place as some water may leach out along the light/pump cables.
My model came with filter guards already installed I guess they realised the intake ports were to large
Hey Pecktec what is the GPH on the new pump you added??? I believe the stock one is 132 GPH so I was curious how much you reduced it by! Please get back to me if you can. Thanks keep up the good work
There should be a link for it in the description that will have the specs. I don’t remember off hand.
Great Videos! I'm not a big subscriber and your channel is the first that I've added in over a year. The link for small pump is not working for me. I've been contemplating a small 2.5 gallon jar nano tank for the office and building a DIY canister filter for it. Most pumps I see are way too strong.
Hey thanks I'll check that link.
ok the link is fixed.
I can’t find the link for the small pump. :(
So been out of the hobby for a few years but thinking of getting this tank for a low maintenance/low light planter (want to keep the costs down). Have you seen much growth with the factory LEDs or have you had to resort in adding more lights? those portable suction LED lights are pretty nifty.
Love your work by the way. Gets me all inspired again.
+Lee Kovic the light is a little too dim for plants to do really well. I'm looking for an alternative though.
pecktec that's a bit disappointing. There are a few options here in Australia that can be used. Stick/glue a LED strip next to the factory one. Run the risk of adding too much light though.
Love your filtration addition.
Would it be possible to add the fluval sky lantern led set?
I am going to try this mod. imgur.com/a/rFbWK I got a 24watt power source and a 36watt power source if it is not enough. Thoughts?
I tried taping a piece of black pantyhose on the grid, with some underwater safe tape. Seems to be doing okay thus far. :)
Does the 15 or 9 gallons (the two sizes available) include the filter area? Wondering how much actual swimming space there is for the fish.
Yes I would think so. There was plenty of space left if you get some tiny ones.
How about taking the dual nozzles off the ball joint and having it as a single nozzle?
Just one question. Where do I put the heater?
Why put the filter floss instead of two layers of foam?
Floss is cheaper and more disposable. So you can just grab it out and chuck it.
Question! So I just bought the Fluval flex 15 and I love the lid on top, ( I have a cat, and dog hair floating) so I neeeeed that lid. Butttttt the light that comes with it isn’t Bluetooth. For when I’m at work I’d want to put a timer and light temp. Is there a way I can put the Fluval plant led Bluetooth one in that lid ti mod it?
They way mine ended up I had a pice of glass cut as a lid and mounted another light. You could probably find a way to jam a light in there. But the water level may need to be lower. An alt to glass is poly carbonate a plastic. I think that’s what it’s called. It’s not plexiglass plexiglass bends this stuff doesn’t.
Why didn't you show the second part of the filter with the bio balls in?
I have watched several of your videos on the smaller tanks and was wondering if you had an opinion on the best tank for the money in the 2 to 5 falls on range? I like the looks of the Fluval 2.6 gallon Spec III.
+Mack Canady well to be honest I haven't bought a lot of other small tanks. But I do love my Fluvals.
pecktec thanks for the information. I think it is between the 9 gallon flex and the Spec III
Someone gave me one of these cool tanks.. I was just wondering can I use it for tadpoles?
Sure
Planning to buy one and then drill some hole to make way for chiller tubing
Also what species of crab is that?
That is a pompom crab.
What was the name of the tiny pump? I'm looking to switch my fluval 9 gal pump over to a smaller one to make it more suitable for boraras species. Cheers!
Check out the link in the description. It’s not a common brand it’s just a cheap one.
@@pecktec thanks! It seems the Amazon link isn't working unfortunately - my LFS stocks the eheim 300 which I think I'll use :)
Hi Pecktec! I know this is an old video but I am currently moding my fluval flex 9gal to make it betta friendly. What is the name of the suction cup light you added for the plants??
Oh they make way better ones now. Search for waterproof aquarium lights on Amazon. Cool white leds have full spectrum and normally grow plants.
@@pecktec thank you so much!!
