  • The Turbo Vado has been exciting people for the past year with posts in the EBR forums and questions via email. Today, April 23rd 2017, Specialized updated their official website with three Vado models including the 5.0 and a Men’s and Women’s 3.0 (high-step and step-thru). The bikes appear to use a custom programmed Brose mid-drive motor system operating at 350 watts and 250 watts with top speeds of 28 mph and 20 mph respectively. The price difference between the models is $2,000 with the Vado 5.0 coming in at $5k. This model only comes in high-step and one color (black and grey) but appears to have a touch screen interface with GPS and elevation tracking. Both models can connect to the Specialized Mission Control App for Android or iOS to fine tune motor performance and plan trips according to battery capacity.
    You can see the two models compared side by side back at ElectricBikeReview.com using the compare tool: electricbikere... but the primary differences I saw when studying the official website and manual include: larger battery, higher motor wattage, higher top speed, brighter headlight 12 volt 2 led 600 lumen vs 6 volt 1 led 300 lumen, rigid alloy fork vs. suspension fork, fatter tires (51 vs 47 mm), larger front chainring (48 vs. 40t) and wider cassette range 11-42 vs. 11-40, upgraded drivetrain from deore shadow plus to deore xt shadow plus, nicer handlebar, nicer grips and a nicer saddle.
    This is just a preview, I welcome any feedback and corrections. My goal was to make it simple and quick to understand the Vado and determine which model might suit your budget and lifestyle if you are interested in a sporty commuter or touring / trekking bike. EBR was paid to perform this review #Sponsored We try to be honest, thorough, and fun! Comparison tools, shop directory, and forums at: ElectricBikeReview.com

    I like the idea of doing previews. Good thinking, Court. It could inform people and build conversation about the bikes

      Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it... I like to play things by ear and the opportunity to do this just popped up. I realized people were interested in the bike because of the forum posts and when I got an email about the details going up I just went for it :P

    This morning I spoke with Specialized corporate office in Utah and they verified the Vado 3.0 is a 28 mph bike. They updated the firmware mid 2017 and any Specialized bicycle shop can update the firmware for current specifications.

    I've got a pair of the Turbo basic (2016 model) and I LOVE them. I've seen the Vado and it can't compare to the older Turbo's. I especially like the hub motor which is less stress on the chain. And the older models are way cooler looking!

  • @mauriceimhof4362
    @mauriceimhof4362 7 років тому +1

    I find it kind of a step back when they choose the brose motor over the go swiss. The hub motor from switzerland is silent and most likely faster on the streets. I see the point of the mid drive on mountainbike though... I'd love to have some more accurate power measurements. It's always a bit vague with the watt (peak or normal) and the torque. The best comparison would be a 0-20mph acceleration comparison :D

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому

      Cool, I'll brainstorm on some ways to demonstrate that... given my relatively lightweight 135 lb body, I'm not sure how well it would translate? Any ideas to demonstrate acceleration?

    Dont grab the rack in the rear while loading on the bike rack on your car!!... I found out the hard way , it breaks! the first day i bought it, the tail light was history!.

    Problems with screen freezes on some models. Not all Specialised dealers will do warranty work.

    Very cool looking bikes. I would get rid of the derailleur and use an internally geared hub or some kind of single speed set-up. I don't see why we can't have more single speed ebikes. If lack of acceleration is the side-effect of that, I would be fine with that compromise.

      Cool idea Chris, if Specialized or some other brand developed an eight-speed super-light IGH and paired it with a carbon belt drive on a model like this... it would be awesome :D

    I'm contemplating a 2021 Vado 3.0. This review is pretty old. Do you, or any of your readers, have any newer experience with the 2020 or 2021? Price is going up, and there are some attractive competitors, like the pXcycle E-XC+, which you haven't reviewed.

    Hello EBR ,
    any plans to review the updated OHM bikes ?
    also looking into EJoe , no dealers outside California and they haven't updated website . Are they still going and healthy , I like what they do and the value.
    thanks

      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому

      Jackie Palmer Yeah! I'm hoping to visit OHM and review new models at some point but it may be later in the year since they are up in Vancouver Canada. I believe eJoe is on track but agree that their updates have slowed in recent weeks. I spoke with the founder last month and it sounded like he was balancing between ebikes and their scooter line. Recently, I think one of their employees left so perhaps they are short handed... especially now with the season really kicking off :)

    The price diffrence isn't 2000. in germany 3.0 is 2999€ and 5.0 is 3.999€. So i think USA will be The same.

      E°Bike Company Mainz That would be nice! I based my numbers on the US website which is showing $5k right now www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/turbo/urban/turbo-vado-50/118307

    Good preview !,... but Why have specialized removed the rear electric motor ?
    Now your chain and Sprocket have a lot more to endure !
    May be is not a big deal you replace them before They are tosed

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому

      Sita van Waarde True, the chain, sprockets and derailleur will all take more strain but both models have a higher end drivetrain and the 5.0 appears to have an ebike specific chain. I think the benefits of torque, range and frame balance had proved themselves on the mountain bike line and they decided to go all in. Good chance to get a hub motor Turbo bike now though. I personally think they look sleeker and am a big fan of the Turbo X with suspension :)

      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому

      Hi Cleber, I'm not sure... perhaps there are speed dongles that work on the Brose system but it appears that Specialized has made a custom programmed version vs. using the more stock product

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому

      I have no idea... but it seems like the other Turbo models have dropped in price, I haven't seen a Turbo S in person for quite a while. If you find one, just ask the shop if they will make you a deal since the model appears to be discontinued.

    • @Propelbikes

      Storm Strike the Turbo will be replaced with the Vado. There aren't many left in the US so I doubt there will be drop in price.

      Yeah, it looks great and comes with just about everything you need to get going... one of the only ebikes I've seen with two bottle cages (if I'm perceiving the pictures correctly). Love how clean the battery and motor are... impressed with the $3k price point for the Vado 3.0

    I keep watching these reviews but just can't get past the price.Do you realize you can buy a new Honda 250 dirt bike that will go 150 kph ,get 25 km /l of fuel and will easily take you thousands of km reliably for many years and then could be resold for a large portion of your original investment. Which is the same price as this bicycle !

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  7 років тому +2

      It's true... but you could also ride the bus for a very small fraction of the price of any of these products and not even have to pay for licensing or insurance. I think part of it has to do with experience... with an ebike, you don't have to drive on the road, deal with messy parts or use gasoline. It's just a different product and it hasn't reached mainstream so the price is high for nice ones. You can pay a lot less for a basic model. Here's a list of more affordable ones I've reviewed recently: electricbikereview.com/category/affordable/

      ElectricBikeReview.com Thanks. Don't get me wrong I'd love to have one of these but there is SO much indirect competition right now. I'll keep watching and hoping for more reasonable prices. 😊

      Tim of free thought hopefully the public will not buy them at these ridiculous prices. Then the company's will either go out of business or have to drop their price substantially.

    • @tongmovies
      @tongmovies 7 років тому +1

      Agreed they are expensive, and I don't want to spend that much either. But then, I wouldn't spend $3000, $5000, $10000 on a higher end NON powered bike either - which many people do. I've never spend more than $150 and a regular bike - ever - and I bought them all new.

    • @rbnjr

      this bike does not consume gasoline, of couse there is a better bang for the buck out there...but they all consume gasoline..thinking beyond the current state of affairs regarding gasoline..this is a huge step and it will contunue..stay tuned..

    You shouldn't be getting paid to review a product unless you are actually riding/using it. This commentary on its online specifications is BS!
