Have the right genetics. The women in my family all have this basic leg shape. Of course there is more fat and less muscle compared to professional athletes, but especially our calves are humongous with well defined muscle. I'm guessing most of us would rather have slimmer legs!
Extremely knowledgeable guy. You can tell he has a very cerebral approach to training and actually knows what he’s talking about. He knows the science well and applies it to his training to get the most out of it instead of relying on dogma dictated to him by some guy some time.
Don't know about quads that big.....but I got back into cycling this year to help my knees due to issues after an injury, MRI scans showed no joint damage. The bike has strengthened my knee muscles far more than I ever hoped so the bike has paid for itself in future medical bills 10x over..!! And I love just doing 20+ miles in the countryside (and beer garden in summer....!!!) 😁😁😁😷 Love it 😀
Amazing how fast your legs build up riding. I really wish i could achieve that with my arms but unfortunately riding is super fun, lifting weights is uh... Not.
I have had the pleasure of interviewing Sir Chris and it was a delightful encounter. If anyone is worthy of being awarded "Knight of the Realm" it is Sir Chris Hoy.
Excellent video to highlight the amazing sprinters on the track. Most people don't appreciate just how hard to be a track sprinter and they almost always praise road cyclists more than track cyclists especially track sprinters. Good for GCN to give them some recognition and exposure.
I’m a strength and conditioning coach with an emphasis/specialty in sports performance. This guy knows his shit. The explanation of muscle breakdown with microscopic tears and how important it is for protein intake is spot on. Also, I’ve never heard of anybody (outside of strength and conditioning experts) use the term DDM-delayed onset of muscle soreness. Nice interview.
Road racers simply have more red blood cells and lung capacity. No such thing as an endurance muscle. Marathon runners simply have better lungs and more efficient blood flow.
This. Who gets to the top of the game in athletics? The people who have the genetic capacity to do the work and fix the damage that hard training does to them, better than the next guy. Part of that is the genetic ability to build bigger stronger muscles. Those genetically blessed people who also have the work ethic meet each other at the Olympics.
My girlfriend rides really a lot! I cannot keep up with her on a bike if she decides to ditch me even if i’m a lot stronger than she can ever be. Within minutes of being on her bike, her legs kind of double in size. I am always amazed at actually seeing that change when I follow her.
I remember listening to one of the sports scientists who worked with the Great Britain cycling team talk about one unconventional method they used to build leg strength. Apparently they had an exercise bike that had motorised cranks, the motor would spin the cranks in reverse and the athlete would do their best to resist them turning.
Great interview. I ride mostly track bike on the road. Quads grew, hips got stronger, & no real knee pain. Kettlebells, sqats, carries. Everything's stronger at 71 yrs old💥👍👊
Another excellent GCN video. Great advice from a very down to earth gentleman. The interviewer seemed impressed with the chap as well...keep great content coming, GCN!
thank you for the creative ideas / production flow following the latest push to get track racing in the forefront. great job Manon. I wish the lighting was better for some of the edit shots, tough to view on a lap top, bet its not so great on a phone.... love this new track theme and athletes interviews on technical themes!!!
Consistently in a calorie surplus, good quality and duration of sleep, sufficient hydration, hypertrophy training focused on squats (10-20 sets per wk, 6-15 reps per set, to within 0-3 reps of failure, 1-4 min recovery, progressive overload periodised training, anabolic steroids (trenbolone, dianabol, testosterone, anadrol, deca durabolin, turinabol), pre-workout stimulants, remove all cardio besides that which allows you to complete the gym-based hypertrophy training (i.e. up to 15 min gentle walking per day or equivalent), and never touch your bike ever again!
I do a lot of exercises that are like squats on a machine that lets you lay flat on your back. I was advised by a Physical Therapist to do this to strengthen all the areas of legs around the knees so that the knees would not get hurt. I had knee issues that stopped me from running.
That was a cool insight to the differences in track training to road training and what I do whilst I ride. I think the only thing I got down is the resting part. I'd be pro at that.
And then of course you need enough of the right kind of fast twich muscle fibers to be a good sprinter in the first place. What a cool video again! Manon you are perfect for the track cycling stuff. You’re beaming with joy and knowledge👏👍
For those who don't know what is like 2500 watts, i'm a 1,90m 75 kilos 18yo man, i practice bicycle for fun not in competition and my max is under 1300 watts. So 2500 is enormous
@@Eric-fu7yf in max power? 400 it's not possible if you weigh 65kg and practice weekly, if you have a powermeter you'll see that you can do a lot more than 400, i'm not talking of average power but power peak, if you can't there is a problem
Im a weightlifter who loves cycling. Ive just given up trying to keep up with others on the roads as over time my average speed just won't go up Im just too heavy with muscle bulk. The track could be the answer.
My cycling shorts leave stich marks on my body evey time. Is it too tight? It stays for some days. Some articles says it should be tight. Please make a video on cycling shorts fit guide.
Many of my college track and field teammates made the USA Olympic bobsled team. Would love to see what my sprint buddies, who run sub 10 seconds in the 100m, could do with a proper cyclist training regimen.
The Olympics channel did a series called 'sports swap' where a track athlete and track cyclist swapped for an afternoon and it was interesting to see how just the mechanics to generate power are different and foreign to someone new to it. But it'd be really interesting to see if someone competed in both, what the crossover potential is
A fascinating interview. I wonder how this can be applied to a 50+ male seeking to (1) improve his bike power but even more so (2) improve is speed on a tennis court, (3) improve his running pace on tracks and (4) his speed on cross-country skis (should winter ever start again in Canada)
I've been riding bikes as a sport for 7 years now. My body strength already has an imbalance towards my legs and I barely fit any pairs of trousers. I used to ride at low cadence. That has a lot to do with it. And my general metabolism.
Do you have any tips on getting ripped quads? Let us know in the comments! 👇
ive spent a few years as a powerlifter, and can attest to how well the training has carried over to cycling, squats are king 🤘
Watch hours of UA-cam videos of other people exercising.

Train to failure,
be consistent,
eat, eat and eat again!

Ooo, greetings Cam . . .🖐😉
They are not Shimano Dura Ace.
They only need to last the race…

That was by far the best interview I have seen in ages. Some interesting tips too and the sacrifice it must take to get there. Wow!

Good to see the legend Hoy on GCN. Great interview Manon, thanks.
GCNs new track cycling content is ace, great move 👍
This'll definitely help bring more people into the sport and build awareness

Seriously, i could listen Sir Hoy all day. I've watched some of his (non-cycling) content and he's an excellent presenter!
@@makkomise Absolutely 100%. Just a genuine honest guy and what a role model.

Lets hope he hasn't had the jibbyjab - sports persons are dropping like flies!
Loving all this track content, keep it up! How about a GCN Training video with some cadence drills on the rollers???
Manon approved for sure! “They look good. Don’t they :))”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can you blame her? Look at the man! He’s a hunk! 😂
Lol, "I'm kinda like a big cat.."
Thank you Manon. That was very interesting. Could you please do more episodes with regards to various types of training?
@CycleQ 😂

You mean DOMS?
This is all very basic stuff almost everyone that lifts knows dude come on…
I thought much the same as you Mike - I rarely hear those terms in my cycling worlds -
More of this please, and more of Sir Chris Hoy
These track content videos are amazing, keep em coming!
So basically sprinters trains and eats like a powerlifter/strongman, while road racers like marathoners.
Explosive athletes all tend to train and eat in a similar way.
Road racers simply have more red blood cells and lung capacity. No such thing as an endurance muscle. Marathon runners simply have better lungs and more efficient blood flow.

I just want to know how difficult it is for him to find a good pair of trousers that fit.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Many have to get tailor made or buy stretch jeans from body building stores that sell clothes made for bodybuilders
Keirin Cut Jeans.
One mustn’t overlook the role in one’s genetic predisposition in whether or not big legs will happen.

Sir Chris is such a great guy!
They only ripped legs I get is through the spikey brambles on my gravel rides 😁
😂😂😂😂😂😂 Brilliant!
It's nice to hear from Sir Chris, and I for one, would be pleased to see more track content on GCN.
Been squatting for years. It definitely helps with peak power over short distances. Squats build the quads like nothing else.
Thanks for the interview! Good input right here!

It's is said that women's legs are as strong as men's legs for their weight with the same training
@@smefour yeah true if I remember correctly the part where men trump women is upper body strength.

Subtle way of addressing the obvious
great interview
Amount of water in this video could flood a small village in Africa, but sheeps will thumbs up no matter of what.
Slow and controlled heavy front and reverse lunges have made my legs into tree trunks.
Very interesting, though I’d just like to know how to sit on a chair like that with my legs tucked under without getting vicious leg cramps.
Great interview!
Great content.. thank you
Great interview! One question: when Chris said he squats 235kg, does he mean one rep max? If it is, how much can he squat at 10 reps?
There are calculators to estimate, but the further out you go from 1 rep the more fuzzy the accuracy of it is
i'd have a punt at 180 for 10, if he'd trained for a 10RM earlier in the cycle that got him to 235
He's referring to his 1 Rep Max. He could be a competitive powerlifter with those numbers.
Man that bottom bracket must have been really stuck for them to be whacking on it for the whole interview.
