I've just arrived home from a few days in Manchester where I took part in a taster session at the velodrome on Monday evening, not my first go but it was seriously more exhausting than I remember. Great workout,
There used to be a velodrome that was about 3.5 hours away from where i live, but that closed down a few years ago. Now the closest one is 6.5 hours away. Kind of sad that we don't have many velodromes in the US.
I never gave track cycling much thought but this video reminded me that I'm very lucky to have one a 15 minute drive away from me in the US. I looked it up and it was demolished 2 years ago:( Truly very few of them on this side of the Atlantic.
It's been close to 30 years since I last rode on a velodrome. It is where I feel like I learned how ride a bike, forces you to ride a smooth cadence. Smooth out your steering in a tight pack of riders and great pace line skills. Loved riding the Madison so much fun and incredible interval training. Stopped by Encino Velodrome here in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago thinking about pulling down the old track bike and getting back on it.
The obvious problem with track cycling, in the US at least, is the lack of venues. I live in a major city, but the nearest velodrome is a 3 hour drive, and it’s an outdoor facility so it’s not open year round.
The other problem in the US is that the existing velodromes are underutilized and therefore dying out. The Superdrome in Frisco, TX was disassembled in 2018 and the site turned into a parking lot. The Alpenrose Velodrome in Portland, OR closed in 2021 as the property was sold and the new owners have other plans. The Boulder Valley Velodrome in Erie, CO is in limbo as the owners need to sell and buyers are more interested in the property than the track. The Brian Piccolo Velodrome in Cooper City, FL is a beautiful municipal facility but has no programs as there is no one to run them. Support your local (or non-local) velodrome.
@@oldanslo Luckily the one here in San Diego, CA is still open and gets used a lot. I want to take a beginner's class to get my license and ride it regularly. I'm just waiting for the next classes to open up.
i do know where an outdoor track is that comes complete with crazy weekly races during the season, and despite a healthy amount of fear after viewing the crashes, i think i will give it a go!
Enjoyed road cycling back in the late 80's and early 90's. Was active duty and saw cycling around the Mediterranean and really missed having my bike on the ship (stolen in homeport) After my four years I got into cross country motorcycle racing (hare scrambles) and enjoyed it immensely! As a family man, I found the cost prohibitive and began riding my ole Bianchi with my father in law to train for his cross-country ride to bring awareness to heart health. He road his Trek from the Pacific (Washington state) to the Atlantic (Charelston SC) at 70 years old. He has reignited my love for human powered, two wheel fun as opposed to Gas Powered, two-stroke fun. Would love to try this type of 'track riding' if I can locate one near me!
Tried Lee Valley once as a birthday present - loved it! Unfortunately not a single venue in East Anglia. Having to go up to that there London for a track session is waay too far. We need a facility in the East!
I absolutely loved this video, I’ve been thinking about going to a velodrome for a few weeks now, and then randomly your video popped up. It’s a great help and I’m booking in to go to the Lea Valley velodrome in London
Great video, helps a lot, i have been riding the track once a week for 3 weeks now since i started, because the nationals are coming up (Slovenia :D). I would like to see some more advanced tips as well, thx for all your work GCN. :)
Yippee! I've just seen an outdoor velodrome 30 minutes ride from home. Been past it no end of times, but just thought it was part of a 5 aside complex.
I was given a voucher to experience a track day at Manchester velodrome but covid stopped that. I now have family living in Middlesborough, just a short walk away from the ourdoor velodrome, and really fancy giving it a try. It's the getting up to 15mph that worries me! I am a 71 year old grandad.
They have so little rolling resistance that 15mph feels like nothing, I promise you! The relatively high gear might make 0-5mph a problem, but I daresay somebody could give you a push to get started :-)
@@veganpotterthevegan Have you never seen sprinters doing track stands? They're actually stationary at the top of the track! Also, I'd dispute Manon's assertion that if you stop pedalling your back wheel will fly into the air - more likely you'll be shot into the air and possibly over the bars (don't ask me how I know this!).

@@TheJRCarr My first fixed ride resulting in me being catapulted over the bars - I hadn't realised until then that when I go to freewheel, I lock my "down" leg. Keep your knees bent at all time and the bike will just "encourage" you to keep pedalling!
yeah, it's not going to happen. my brain does not do fixie, i've tried, i used to own a giant bowery and after nearly dying 3 twices when i stopped pedaling and the bike bucked me i flipped the wheel to single speed mode. i can't turn it off hahahaha
