Just got an 8” steel toe pair for my new tire technician job that required steel toes. After a 8 hour shift of being on my feet for 99% of the time, they were basically broken in. Now after about a week worth of working, they are almost perfect. I assume they will keep getting more comfortable though.

I've been wearing my Thorogoods going on 3 years now on and off construction sites. It's just now to the point I'm going to send them in to be refurbished. They are super comfortable and I have no problem being in them for over 14hrs a day everyday. I've put major miles on my boots and although I've never tried Red Wing boots before. I don't see a reason to switch now. The break in was short. I just had to not tie them all the way up to give my ankle a break. Once broken in they are the best boot I've ever owned.

Man! Good review! I’m a union carpenter I have used both of these boots for several years. I love the redwing boots! The comfort for a boot is off the charts! However, the longevity is below par. They lasted me 6 months! The stitching on the toe box came apart, and the sole was gone! I’m talking slick gone! For 289$ that wasn’t going to fly with me. Thorogood moc toe lasted me 1yr. Stitching still in place, the leather on the toe box scuffed a bit but nothing extreme. The outsole was in the same condition as the redwings were but in a 1yr span not 6 months. I currently use thorogood 1957 series 6” moc toe tobacco. Their waterproof and a real good looking boot.

I bought the Thorogoods today. I was at a shop that sold Thorogoods ($169), Red Wings ($219) & Danners ($159); so I was able to try on and walk around in all three brands’ mock toe boots. All looked good, felt good and appear well built. All three were quite comfortable and I was splitting hairs on deciding. If I had been at a shop that only sold one brand, I probably could have left with any of these boots and been happy. In the end, to me, the Thorogoods fit slightly better, felt more comfortable from the start, and the leather was softer; all points Rose Anvil stated here. I have become use to using speed hooks on all of my other boots, so I liked that they are on the Thorogoods & Danners over the eyelets on the Red Wings. I do wish Thorogood would have used speed hooks all the way to the top instead of a top eyelet; it’s a little awkward having to stop speed lacing to the thread the top eyelet. The Thorogoods are a little taller, which I liked since I will be wearing these when I ride my motorcycle. All three boots are very nice and made in the USA; a tough decision.

What’s funny is I’m completely opposite to a lot of these comments. I’m a union electrician and have tried both pairs. I started off with Red Wings and after about a year their sole was wearing down so I turned them into my camping boots and got a pair of thorogoods. They lasted 8 months before my feet were in legit pain every day at work. I currently rock the 8in redwings with their leather insole. The thorogoods stitching was worn out in multiple spots…water easily seeped through. Really comfy boots…I just think as prices of both are increasing it’s worth a break in period so that I can resole my redwings for another year at least.

The Red Wing has the leather footbed, which molds to the shape of your foot after a month or two rather than having a foam padded insole. Over time the leather insole, once molded, fits more like a glove, which translates into comfort when paired with the softer crepe insole.

All of my previous Redwing and Irish Setter boots (not moc toes) have had to be replaced yearly. I'm about to buy a second pair of 8" Thorogoods in a soft toe for casual wear/ riding as my steel toes aren't the best looking after all the hydraulic oils, rusty water, mud, stamping sludge and so on and they don't fit under my shifter easily. I'm a foodservice truck driver. I deliver to most of the fast food chains that most people eat at with a focus on pizzerias and Italian restaurants. I put in about 10-12 miles of walking (more like pushing a dolly with a few hundred pounds from outside to inside of the restaurants and walking back and forth in a 48' trailer building/rebuilding pallets.
Work boots last 6-8 months before they're done. Totally bald, glue coming apart near the toe box (extra toe guard on various redwing styles) or the outsole ripping apart from one end to the other.
Thorogood boots. By far. Are the most comfortable boot I've ever used. I can put in a 10-12 hour workday and when I get home and the wife wants to go for a walk I leave my thorogoods on because they're better than any of my 'walking shoes'. I start at 1-3am in the morning. Small crowded parking lots and big rigs don't mix.
Wedge boots have really bad slip resistance though. Redwing & Thorogood. They kind of suck on greasy tile floors.
Redwing Heritage boots/Moc Toe are good for one thing: Fashion. That's it. I can't imagine them ever being a work boot.
Thorogood boots are good at being comfortable day 1. Re-sole them once maybe twice if the shank and support is still there. Good for being on your feet all day on cement. Good for landscaping. Good for plumbing. Steel toe versions are heavy, but still incredibly comfortable.

I work for the Railroad in the track Department. I’ve been wearing the Thorogood model# 4375 for roughly 5 years now with 1 complete restoration in that time frame. Very comfortable boot that takes little to no time for break in in my case. I’m constantly on ballast, mud, sand, and getting hydraulic fluid on them. I even thermite welded a year in them where it was common to see them near extreme heat all the time. I’ve been on my feet for 24+ hrs many times and my feet feel fine in these. The cons are I do have to treat them for waterproofing once a month or my feet will get wet, this model isn’t waterproof and the elements I work in are really hard on leather. Definitely get the EE if you want to wear extra socks because they run tight. I’m in the Deep South so it’s not an issue for me personally. I’ll never wear a different boot and would highly recommend them.

Exactly. I’ve had Timberlands, Danner, Ariat, and Thurogoods. Multiple pairs of boots across 20 years of the hardest construction in America, foundation repair. Red wings are EXTREMELY overrated. Didn’t last 3 months. Ariat slip on are comfortable, but last about 6 months. Danner are a great boot that mix comfort and durability that can last 1-2 years with care. Timberland mid high hiking boots are the best bang for your buck. Lasting as long as top tier brands but at a much lower cost. Thorogoods are the most comfortable thing I’ve ever put on my feet. Consider your boots a tool, don’t skimp out on your feet. When your a real labor worker, fatigue and endurance can be easily manipulated by the boots you wear. (And socks, I like Duluth)

Plus the speed hooks are so much more convenient, so much so that I often find myself actively avoiding wearing my redwings because they are such a hassle to put on. Like, I literally have to entirely loosen the laces all the way down and unthread the top two eyelets in order to shove my foot in, not to mention the redwings don't have a little pull loop thing. You can also usually find thorogoods on crazy good sales, especially on dvor, redwings not so much. My iron rangers on the other hand are perfection. I'd recommend getting a pair of thorogood mocs and a pair of redwing iron rangers and call it a day.

I have found that the Thorogoods bleed (the color of the leather dye) onto my socks during break in, all of them have done that. I work construction (15+ years now & countless pairs of boots) so they are just work socks but I haven’t heard anyone else mention this happening to them too. I wore red wings for ten years, then I found thorogoods. Red wing soles last 6 months tops and then it costs a pretty Penney to resole them. My thorogoods lasted over 2 years before I had to resole them and when I did bought two extra pairs. The ankle support is phenomenal with the waterproof models and I’ll never buy another pair of red wings as kind as I live, although maybe a pair of Irish setter steel toe slip one. First factory was a bakery, dry environment, boots were great. Current factory is a cannery, wet environment, boots not so great. Getting wet regularly I had the welt fail, that was the boots I transitioned jobs in so had a year on them. Current boots had stitching come apart under the lacing area behind my big toe. Never had that style of Redwing but I shy away from stiff boots. Hate spending 2 weeks with sore feet/legs while they break in. Spend 8hrs on my feet on concrete, thorogoods super comfortable right out the box.

I feel like I fall with a majority of the comments. I have both, and have owned and worn redwings for the last 10 years. The last 3 of which I have worn my Thorogood Mocs for work, and now for casual wear as well. Despite the Oro leather being higher quality, the boot just doesn’t cut it as a true work boot. It’s also no the most comfortable for long hours on your feet. Other than the heritage line, redwing has a lot of overseas production and overseas parts assembled in USA. USA union made Thorogood was my choice as a union worker myself. More comfortable and more durable at a better price point. Don’t get me wrong I love my redwing 877’s but you’ll never catch me wearing them on the job.
