Just How GOOD Was Grayson Allen At Duke?

  • Coach Nick went deep into the Duke footage to examine Grayson Allen's game. Unfairly maligned because of immaturity and some unsportsmanlike conduct, judging Allen's ability on the court alone shows he should have been drafted a lot higher in 2018.

@@M0ebius Kansas player picked up a chair and was going to smash a K state players face in a huge brawl last year and I bet you don't even know his name. That absolutely embarrassing and UNACCEPTABLE brawl was a story for a single day. Media talked about Allen's tripping incidents for 2 years. Allen tripped people like 3 times and they didn't even come close to getting injured, because he was actually never actually malicious in any of those instances. Allen on the other hand was left bleeding from being elbowed in the face on purpose and intentionally undercut going for a fast break dunk which is extremely cheap and one of the most dangerous things you can do to a player. He played for Duke and people loved to hate him unjustifiably so. The things done to him were so much worse and more dangerous and straight-up disrespectful than any action he ever did.

@@tristanwright9572 Brawls are different from dirty plays. And yes there are other dirty players besides Allen. And yes people focus on him because he’s a Dukie and was the star player. So what? Nothing you said justifies his behavior in the past, and his antics look plenty malicious to me. Now I’m not saying a person can’t change, but he brought this reputation onto himself. Plenty of Duke players were hated in college but highly respected in the NBA. Regular fans don’t owe him anything, and it’s up to Allen to change his public perception.

I think immaturity is still a big thing to factor in considering in the past how many players there have been with such immense talent but not hold the spot as well as one hopes. In this case I think it really matters which team makes the pick. The Jazz had the right players and vets that keep each other accountable. The Grizzlies seem to also. I'm not as sure he would do as well if he went to a super young team that had few vets and weren't expected to win.
That said, his immense skill, talent, and effort was hard to deny and you would've been a fool to not acknowledge this, even if you really hated his antics. He should've been a few spots higher at least, but would that have worked out as well? Who knows.
