  • In the first episode of a new wildlife photography masterclass series, Mark Carwardine is in the field in Bristol with local wildlife photographer Sam Hobson.
Sam Hobson is an award-winning urban wildlife photographer, whose images have been featured in numerous publications and competitions, including BBC Wildlife Magazine, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and British Wildlife Photography Awards.
In this episode, he explains how he captured his stunning image of a red fox in front of the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.
Zoologist Mark Carwardine is a widely published wildlife photographer, an award-winning writer, a TV and radio presenter, a best-selling author of more than 50 books, and an outspoken environmentalist.
He presented BBC Radio 4’s weekly programme Nature for many years and is best known for his Last Chance to See books, radio series and TV series with the late Douglas Adams and Stephen Fry. He has been writing a conservation column in BBC Wildlife magazine every month since 2004.
He was also Chair of the Judging Panel of the prestigious ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ competition for seven years and was selected as one of ‘The World’s 40 Most Influential Nature Photographers’ in Outdoor Photography magazine.
This is the first video in a ten-part series. Episodes will be released weekly on Thursdays from 15 April. For each episode, free fact sheets are available to download from Mark Carwardine's website.

I was really looking forward to this. It was Interesting to hear about his process, but the sound quality was awful. I found it hard to listen to, especially the section where he was sat in front of the bridge. Hopefully the next episode is better!

Hooked….. I can’t believe how good this is. Desperately hope this isn’t one of those 10-week wonder series that leave you hanging. Sam has so much to offer too and presents so well. Urban Wildlife as a genre isn’t something I’ve considered but this was enough to whet the appetite. Thank you both and consider me subscribed. Good luck keeping the material this interesting as the bar has been set very high.

If you have the option, grab an audio recorder with 32bit floating audio. It’ll help save you from clipping.

A fascinating insight into an incredible image. On a practical note; please sort the sudio out for future videos, as it was very distorted.

yeah I'm not complaining too much here just some constructive feedback regarding the audio. The Levels are clipping so it's bit distorted in some clips. Very cool segment though I subscribed.

Great video. As someone new to wildlife photography I'm curious about ethics. Is it ethical to acclimate fox kits to people in the way that the photographer was doing?

    • @ajc1482
      @ajc1482 3 роки тому

In an Urban environment I'd say it's ok, Foxes are generally used to people and if they need to they can escape and disappear quickly. I live in London and have Foxes all around me, I regularly stop to watch the kits play and they'll happily walk right past me less than a foot away.

This is so beautiful, thank you. I do wonder though, if it's a good idea for the fox cubs to get so used to humans? I mean that they approach someone for food? (Sorry, I really don't mean to be a downer but I couldn't help thinking that might not end well for them in different circumstances.)

Episode 2: how to setup your microphone for decent audio without clipping 😂

  • @ajc1482

Well that's put me off ever trying to do Urban foxes, it's all well and good going on about flashes, IR triggers etc etc but some of us don't have money to burn and have an actual day job so repeatedly spending nights and early mornings setting up or retrieving gear isn't possible.
I also think using all this tech takes away from the skill of photography. I'd rather achieve the image with just a camera, lens and my own knowledge.
