I used to go across this bridge with my parents when I was a kid and was scared...grew to like it as I got older.Newport News is my second home...much love
Scared, I can see how. There’s nothing but water and sky for a long time crossing it. And just how wide is that river? It actually took over five minutes to cross it!
I drove across the old James River Bridge (built in the late 30's/early 40's) back in the early 80's, when it was a 2 lane drawbridge. A small part of that bridge still exists, as a fishing pier, at the north end of this newer bridge.
I was stationed over there on 32nd Street in the early 90s when i was on The USS Enterprise and we were in overhaul/ Drydock,, i took the James River quite a few times to go over to Suffolk .
david maclean ...used to commute on this thing every morning from Portsmouth to Newport News. My brother wrecked on the bridge at night in a Rambler and almost went over the side. Being a member of the same dumb ass bloodline and being a 19 year old daredevil I once crossed it doing 105 mph in a souped up 1970 Pontiac Catalina that I converted into a street racer. Ahh the stupidity of youth!! I laugh and sweat at the same time now whenever I'm reminded of it! Brooks & Dunn's Red Dirt Road didn't have nothing on me!!
david maclean ...don't forget to go to the fishing pier. It was originally the old James River bridge but they sunk half of it and made it a fishing spot when the new bridge was completed. Trout...croakers...crabs...and they almost jump in your net. The scenery of the Chesapeake Bay ain't bad either! Be safe and have a great time!!
Just the thought of how the hell were the natives able to canoe across that wide, tidal and probably very deep river. On a canoe, it must have taken at least a week.
Fr bro. But i havent been on that bridge in 7 years but it feels like a rollercoaster! But i go to va beach like every 3 months i want to go back over this bridge.
@@woodynorris8224 Correction the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel is 3 and a half miles while the James River Bridge is 4 and a half miles I looked it up plus I went across it with my friend last year to get to an event at the Hampton Coliseum

Hi Randy, thanks for this interesting information I do hope you and your brother are OK. Touring Virgina in September doubt I would reach 60mph.

Looks like a bridge with a watch tower on top but I wouldn’t want to be up there! I hate heights!!
