    Many many years ago (more than 50) sometimes during the summer when the traffic was backed up in one direction - they would stop traffic in one direction and reverse the flow on those lanes. At that time there were bridge sections that were two-lane, two way. When they would get the traffic stopped in the one direction, a police officer would drive down the closed lane standing on the saddle of his Harley (doing about 50 mph) and wave you into the lane behind him to show that it was ok to use both lanes in the one direction. I can still recall that cop standing in that saddle. That, to me was one of the most impressive things that I’d seen.

      Actually, according to Mark, the official name is William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge and opened to the public in 1952.
      Many roads and bridges, etc, have "official" names, and are called a common name that makes more sense. :)

The bridge is one lane each way and just a short little side rail. My sister came to a stop crying "i cant drive, i cant see anything!" I had pulled my knees up to my face cringing and screaming "if we get rear ended we will get knocked off an theres Sharks down there. Just driiiiiive!!" ...the ten minutes waiting for the fog to clear enough seemed like an eternity. Trust me i dont like heights either an wouldnt blame you if you wound up mutilating your steering wheel. 😂😂😂

    The bridge that was scary for me was the old hwy 17 bridge coming into Charleston SC. The road bed was metal grate that seemed to pull your vehicle to the side and the guard rail was so short.
    It has been replaced with the Arthur Ravenal bridge (not sure about the spelling of the name).

    As a child living in Portsmouth, NH, in 1971-'72 we would drive down to visit friends of ours in Bowie, MD. We took the Chesapeake Bay Bridge route to avoid Baltimore. At the time, the span they were driving over in the video was under construction, so we were on the bridge to the left, going to and going from. The span they drove over in the video opened in June 1973, about a year after we moved to Washington State.

    Drove that bridge a lot going to/from the Eastern Shore to Balto. Two worst times was in a truck and on a motorcycle. Truck had to stay in the far right lane. Sitting up high in a truck, you don't see a guard rail or anything except a real long drop into the drink. Talk about fear of heights. The other time I was on my motorcycle and the wind at the high point on the bridge was crazy. It literally pushed me two lanes over. I thought I was going over the side since there wasn't a whole lot there to keep me top side.

    Very nice video! It is a tour of a place I've never been. ☺ At. 2:54, I see the uprights that look EXACTLY like KC, MO's former Paseo Bridge, built around 1950. It makes me wonder if that part was done by the same designer. I got kind of wistful, as the Paseo Bridge was replaced several years ago by a new, now 6-lane bridge--and what a project THAT was! I saw lots of patches on your bridge. I guess the saltwater is hard on it.

    • @1markfox
      @1markfox  6 років тому +1

      Even though they were both built in the early 1950's, I don't think they were from the same people. The Paseo bridge was done by Howard, Needles, Tammen, and Bergendoff, but I haven't been able to find who designed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

    • @SteveCarras
      @SteveCarras 6 років тому

      Uprights.:) The Paseo reminds me in a way of the Delaware Mem. and Verrazano bridges, built by the legendary O.H.Ammann, who worked with Paseo's firm in desgining the Delaware one, with the one top bracing, but that one is just straight across, not acrhed. (If anything, the Chesapeake bridges look like San Fran's two suspension bridges-the old one like the Golden Gate, and the later 1973 one likke the Oakland Bay bridge, which was designed by another East coast based US Suspension bridge legend, the Mid-Hudson and Ben Franklin designer Ralph Modjeski, though he died in 1940, which would have robbed him of being the designed for either. )

      I researched info on this. The older (i.e., built same time as the Paseo, the other Bay bridge in the vid) one's the "Oakland Bay-Ambassador bridge"-looking one, while the one that Michelle's describing, is the later, 1973 parrell one.I forgot who designed the William Preston Lane Jr. Mem.Bridge..BUT..I found out on Wikipedia that it ain't Tammen, Needles, Howard and Bergendoff (the firm that built the original 1950s Paseo).And I've never been there either!

    The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is a little over 17 miles long over open water with tunnels & a restaurant/diner about halfway across the bridge. The tunnel systems allow for ship traffic, including military (from Norfok Naval Shipyard), to flow in each direction so there aren't continuous bridge lifts. This bridge system used to be one lane in each direction from one end of the bridge to the other. However, Annapolis is still a few hours away. Once you get to the other side of the bridge, you're still in Virginia. You still have a little ways to go before you leave Virginia & cross the state line into Delaware. Once you get through Delawsre, then you'll be close to Annapolis.

    I remember the bridge and the tunnel when we would go on vacations to Virginia and North Carolina as a teenager. Somewhere along there was l a rest stop where they had a gift shop and small restaurant. I remember seeing a huge Naval battleship crossing by in the distance.
