  • Very easy way to calculate the area under the a graph in Excel 2011 for mac. First by using a function and definite integral and second by dividing into segments.

    its bn so helpful. Thanks. I plotted a longitudinal road profile with cut and fill; to obtain realistic areas, negative area should be added separately as a fill while positive area should also be added separately as a cut. An attempt to add them once will cause neutralization, hence giving net area which might not be accurate for computing areas and thereafter volume of fill and cut.

    It's the linear Trapezoid method you calculate the areas of all the trapezoids between the points and take the total sum of it;)

      Aysan A hi, break down the 5 loops into 20 graphs and calculate in the same way then add and subtract depending on what you want to calculate.

    Hi! Hope my question is not so stupid. I'm very new at this. I just wanted to know how are you solving your equation? wy do you divide your first number by three, the second by two and the third you multiply it by Y value? If I had a polynomial of 3rd order, would I have to divide first number by 4? Thanks

      UTTU Not sure I understand. Could you give me more details. I mean, when I do this in my equations, it works, but I don’t understand why. And I find that a 3rd order equation fits better my data. Should I be using different divisions? Thank you very much for your help.

      not sure if that's what u wann know but, he just integrate the function, so increasing exponent and dividing by n exponent is the regular method for polynomial integration.

    I am attempting to use area under the curve to depict a waveform of breathing. It is very sinusoidal. The computer samples the Analog to Digital sampling device at 128Hz. I have imported all of 240 seconds worth of voltages into Excel. I have applied your formula and expressed it as a graph. This graph shows a similar depiction to the original voltages as displayed on a polygraph; though the original is a line tracing, and the Excel graph is a filled in envelope.
    Am I to use these per sample (128 per second) values as TRUE Areas under the curve, for each A/D sample? Or am I making a misjudgment on using this method to depict AUC for this waveform? Any help appreciated. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ft__-MvdUpfNFQH1n5fZS6lds_zdCufz

      Hi Claude, usually in the (tensile test) the AUC is the energy used to carry out the test. In your case, I would confirm first, what does the AUC mean. Doest mean the energy? or something else? Unfortunately I am not familiar with your application so i cant tell.

      Hi UTTU, I am sorry for not thanking you originally. Thanks for the useful video.
      The original tracing in the upper plot is a simple XY plot of voltage of a stretch sensor. The AUC calculation accounts for the area within these "waves." Historically, we analyze the max and min voltages of these waves. I was hoping to now use AUC to analyze these waves ' area to better represent the full nature of the breath, rather than the arbitrary min and maximum of voltage.
      As to a POWER function, I assume you are referring to RMS.

      It is my understanding that RMS would need to analyze the whole wave.
      What I like about your method is that it yields a value for each sample (or more correctly, the area BETWEEN successive samples) which is exactly what I would like to show. This would have the finest granularity. I also very much appreciate viewing the waveform as en envelope rather than a simple line tracing. That alone is worth the price of admission.
      We use these respiratory tracings to make crude simple math assessments of breathing during sleep: "30% change from baseline." A long standing question is; what exactly is baseline breathing? Providing numbers to allow further mathematical analysis is most welcome and will (i feel) stimulate much inquiry and findings into our breathing during sleep. We truly are stabbing at this issue in the dark. It is hard to get quantified metrics when one is sleeping.

    =AVERAGE(B2:B13)*(A13-A2) hahhaha. for the uniformly spaced x-values only !fine-fine: =AVERAGE(B2+B13, B3:B12)*(A13-A2)
