Did I miss your explanation for keeping the tire pressure gauge in the kitchen instead of the garage or car? May I offer a suggestion for the doggie bags? If you had a pouch (for the pooches 🤪) you could put them in and hang it where you hang their leashes. If your family can live without the junk drawer I can see you storing your teas in the drawer. Then they're near the water carafe. I'm a big fan of making zones in the kitchen. 🫖
Today I was decluttering a box marked mom's nightstand. I found a few card holder wallets. Nothing appeared to be in them but I checked each tight little pocket. First one had a folded up $100 and the second one had a folded up $50! That was fun! 😁Always check every nook and cranny!!
I'm wondering if there should be boxes for things that need to upstairs/downstairs . It's understandable that one wouldn't want to bring something to another floor all the time and there should be a catchall that can be located near the stairs and dealt with on ongoing basis.
Sophia, It's amazing what we accumulate in a day or a week. I think that with a family, we need some form of box or space to gather life's debris. So you may clear out that drawer and rename it "the utility drawer", but all that other " crap" will just collect somewhere else. That may be nice for your kitchen drawer, but you may have to designat another spot for all those other little things. Cheers
I used to have a catch-all table in the kitchen because it was the closest flat top surface located as soon as you walk in the front door. We ate at the dining room table instead. I often decluttered the kitchen table and then finally got rid of it. That forced me to not accumulate things and put things away. When I renovated my home and made it open concept, I didn’t want to see any visual mess. It’s been going 6 years strong. Also, my home is small and every closet and drawer is prime real estate space. There’s no room for anything extra or for things to be out of place.
I'm a great fan of your videos. I've been with you through every nook and cranny for years now and I must say you've come a long way Sophia! You are inspiring to me. I am just like you, I like organising stuff because if I don't keep that under control I quickly get overwhelmed and I hate that.
I had a junk drawer for over 20 years. I got so tired of it. I found a place for everything that I kept in it and got rid of my junk drawer. I do keep a basket now with only a few select things in it that I keep on top of my toaster for convenience.. I make sure only those select items go in there and every few days look in it to make sure something extra didn't end up there.
Did i really watch you sorting out a junk draw,,seriously lol,,,what was i thinking ,,,(well.we are in lockdown here in good old down under, starting to affect my brain ,,),,however you have a very nice kitchen,,been following you for years,, cheers
The tire gage can go in your car. Screw drivers and measuring tape in the tool box, the ribbon measuring tape with your sewing. Only need one pen in the kitchen along with sticky notes or a pad for writing stuff down. Rubber bands, paper clips etc in the office.
@@mygreatchallengeI also use rubber bands for the same reason but I only keep about about less than a dozen. I keep the rest in the office area if I need to replenish.
Way to go! You might be able to pare down the rubber bands to 4 or 6 only, that is what I did and I have enough for what I need in the kitchen. Luvin’ getting paid to declutter...I found two $25 Target gift cards in my junk drawer.
I think you can transfer your new junk draw to the smaller draw I would put the rubber bands in the office but maybe you use them in the kitchen and just one pen or marker
Watching you, I realize that I haven’t used paper clips in my drawer in years. I’ve only used binder clips. So I’m going to decluttering the paper clip container
Sophia, I love the earrings that you wore in this video. I enjoyed watching you go through your junk drawer. We had one of these in our living room drum table when I was a kid. Man, the things you could find in there! It was always fun when I was looking for a pen or some stamps. Thanks for mentioning your blog; I'll check it out. Also, I'm glad that your new computer lets you edit things much faster. I love your videos!
Our family had one growing up. I got rid of ours several years ago. I put my kitchen towels in it as well as a small skinny basket from dollar store that has pens, rubber bands and twist ties. I keep scissors and tape on side of it. It has worked out great! And I throw out all those packets
I have a utility drawer with spare keys, screw drivers, cat flea treatment, sticky notes, rubber bands, glue, tie wraps, ruler, masking tape. Everything has its own section and it is easy to find. Maintenance is the key to functionality.
Those clear plastic feet looked to be the bumpers for cabinet doors so don’t move them too far from the kitchen. 😉 Turns out I enjoy junk drawer clean outs! Very motivating.
Haven’t had a junk drawer for the last 3 years in my kitchen because I only have two drawers but within steps I have a drawer in a dresser that holds a hammer, screwdriver, etc. That is an amazing amount of stuff that you had in one drawer. One more edit. Those headbands work great as giant rubber bands.
No more junk drawer lol! 🙀 Call it a utility drawer. However, don’t beat yourself up about it. I think if I had 3 floors like you I’d have a junk drawer, I’m mean utility drawer, on every floor. I’m not going up and down the stairs just for some batteries or paper clips! I am too old for that lol 😂
I never had a junk drawer anywhere; I had 1 pr of chopsticks kept in same drawer as eating utensils, and 1 pr of kitchen shears kept with the misc [non-block] knives in the same drawer. Yes, multiple prs of scissors all around the house for paper and sewing fabric, but the major tools and smaller general portable tool box was in the attached garage, one wall adjacent to the kitchen/dining, and living room.
I have a small kitchen and several years ago, I decided to get rid of my junk drawer. It was prime real estate and I needed that space for kitchen things. I turned it into a spice drawer and never looked back.
I designated the smallest drawer in my kitchen as a junk drawer (7 inches wide, 21 inches long, 3 inches deep) It has essential tools (lady hammer, Phillips and regular screw drivers, measuring tape, chipping hammer, needle nose and regular pliers, paper clips, box cutter, scraper, small pruner, scissors, and lighter for candles. I never keep leftover condiments, I have chopsticks (formal, everyday, and cooking) because I'm Japanese, but they are in the cupboard with my Japanese dishes or in the utensil holder next to the stove.
Other than using a tire pressure gauge for the vehicles or maybe a balloon tire on a wheelbarrow, where else does one measure air pressure? Mine stayed in the glove compartment of my car or in a small box of emergency accessories in the car trunk.
We only have one and two cars. I just just buy another one and have one in each car. It stayed home because it was in my car and Scott needed one but he was home. So we decided to keep it home which makes no sense because now I have none when I am at work. We re not prepared for life. That is the bottom line. Lol
@@mygreatchallenge HAHA, no judgment, just curious ;-)). Junk drawers (like the name indicates) really just collect junk and other delayed decisions. I am a big fan of a good utility drawer though. When you give something a very clear purpose and structure, it can serve you much better.
We are going to grow another round of radishes and peas. We already have kale and chard growing. I enjoy your videos. I know many people with a designated kitchen junk drawer. It's common in New England. It's usually that catch all spot were things get put that you have no clue what to do with. and things that are needed in a kitchen. Even Ma Taunt had one in her kitchen.
Great job! Do you have a list of all the little areas that you pull from your jar to declutter? I'd love to implement your technique for my own home. Thanks for sharing this bit of inspiration!🍁😊🍂
Great job, Sophia! Now I’m inspired to do my disaster of a junk drawer.. or drawers if I’m being honest. 😳 Also, was that a Canadian loonie I saw in the change dish? 😃
It makes sense to us because we only have one but two cars. We check the tires from the house to see of we need to add air at the pump which is 5 blocks away. It does not have to make sense for everybody.
@@mygreatchallenge Buy one for the other car, great to have one in each for when you’re on the road(they don’t cost that much at Walmart or an auto parts store)
I do not have a junk drawer. I also only keep condiments that I know we will use. To be honest, I can’t tell you the last time I purchased soy sauce. It seems half the bag is full of it whenever we order take out.
Nope, I do not keep any condiments. I know it’s wasteful, but I just don’t use them. I keep pens, small size batteries, a bottle opener, scissors, and chip clip bags. That’s about it!
My mother used to encourage my brothers and I to take packets of sugar from a cafe or restaurant. She was very specific about who was responsible to get Demerara sugar and who was responsible to get white sugar. It wasn’t until I was 15 and helped her to make Christmas cakes, pudding and chutneys that I found out all those packets of Demerara sugar was used for, and jams and cookies all those white sugar packets were for. I asked her why she did it, she said it was out of habit as sugar was very expensive when I was younger. I tried to do the same but couldn’t be bothered. However, my New Years resolution would be to do the same.

I’ve never had a junk drawer. A place for everything and everything in its place.
Well good for you!

Me too!! I cracked up 😆
I use large head bands to put on my trash bags to keep the bags from falling down into the trash bin.

May I offer a suggestion for the doggie bags? If you had a pouch (for the pooches 🤪) you could put them in and hang it where you hang their leashes.

I finally got smart and chose the smallest drawer in my kitchen and designated it our family junk drawer. Sure made a difference!

That drawer is like Mary Poppin’s bag. The stuff just kept on coming.
I use the stretchy head bands on my journals and planners

You could use your tiny drawers next to the dishwasher for junk drawer items.
