I would never be able to let her leave after 40 days. 😢. I hope you thoroughly enjoy each other’s company while she is here. She can always come stay with me for another 40 days or so. I miss my mom so much!

I love you both! I am currently 73, and learned to sew by hand and do simple embroidery at age 8 by my mother; she had been taught to sew, embroider, and upholster by her mother [an RN & nurse-anesthetist from 1920-1986 by career], and her maiden aunt. a bookkeeper, who reared her from age 12 when her parents divorced to h.s. graduation at 16, during WWII. Skipping over more chaos of parental 2nd marriages and divorces, she traveled many places and made many lifelong friends. She decided to take a tailoring class at nights when I was about age 9, and bought a very basic portable machine circa 1960. Her lined winter coat class project was perfect. She taught me basics but mostly I installed zippers as her vision was poor & declining; my stitched zippers amazed her but to this day I have never created a buttonhole! Now I am blind but would still rather create 5 garments from scratch than mend or alter one garment. My first garment was a "lace cage dress" for a school dance; with her guidance it turned out stunning. For decades I sewed my own wardrobe until the price of fabric was prohibitive. Tell your mom I sewed in her style/methods until blindness [and rear-ending injuries/& zero $ settlements from 3 drunk drivers [at my ages io 19, 37, and 40] left me perm disab. Hugs to you all!

She reminds me so much of my mom, she taught herself how to make her own clothes and she loved it. She tried to teach me when i was in my teens but being young all i wanted to do was be with friends. Now im 56 and wished id listened more i would give anything to have her back. So big hug for mom and i will be watching more of your videos of sewing with mom ❤

This may be one of my favorite videos and I enjoy a lot of them. Your Mom’s explanations seemed like common sense but as a person mediocre at sewing, I have never thought of some of the things she mentioned. Sewing doesn’t really want to be a friend to me, but I will never stop trying!
My Mom did the stitch/thread marking on some points, but I never thought of doing it for the notches. My favorite part of sewing is all the prep work, then I send it all to my Daughter for the actual sewing. 😂😂😂

You are so fortunate to still have your Mom to sew with. After losing mine, I can still hear her instructions 'over my shoulder'. Just as a lot of other women in the 50-60's, she used to make some of our clothes. I remember turning so slowly, stiffly so she could hem my dresses. I will enjoy learning her french seams and tailoring tips. Have fun with your sewing, ladies. TFS.

This reminds of the days my mom sewed. Her green Viking sewing machine and all her patterns & supplies would be all over the dining room table until she was finished. She sewed a lot of my clothes growing up and also a lot for my daughter when she was little. The sounds of unfolding the fabric paper always made me think of onion skin paper that I'd use to write friends in other countries back the late70's & 80's.

I just started the video, I don't sew, just excited to see you and mama! Beautiful! And the robes are really going to be cool and a great keepsake for Willie and you! Also useful! Like I said I don't sew. I had told you before my grandma was an excellent seamstress and quilter. An only child and completely self taught. Same with me and crocheting, which if I say so myself I have gotten quite skilled at. So I like to think I got that from my beloved grandma. She was the best.😇
I still have her metal cookie tin that she kept her needles scissors and little tools in
Enjoy your beautiful mama. I know you will

I think the reason for cutting the pattern out first like your mom did, was due to using a different scissors….. having sewn for 4H, my mom and oldest sister were very insistent that the good fabric scissors be only used on fabric!! VERY INSISTENT!! 😊

I don’t sew. My mom used to make a couple of my outfits when we first came to Canada in the early 70’s. I tried making simple things like curtains, pillow cases and comforters when my children were babies. I took a sewing class but my husband (ex now) would interfere with me going. I’m glad to still have my mom around to all the hemming and sewing up holes and rips in mine and my children’s clothes.
Say hi to mom for me 💕🇨🇦

Nap would also be a one directional pattern on the fabric itself. There are different ways to do things, I like to find the grain of the fabric by measuring from the salvage edge for both arrow ends. And what I do for the 3 notches in a row is just cut one big notch around all three which ends up looking like a binder divider tab.

Whenever my mother made a pattern using the multi-size pieces she would fold or pleat along the size she wanted so that the pattern remained complete so that she could remake it another time in one of the other sizes if she wanted. It wasn’t always an exact science as some curved lines were tricky but she was a competent and confident sewer so she could do it.

How fun to sew with your mom. The last time I sewed with mine was when we made my wedding dress (35+ years ago). Just so you know, you may not want to cut your fabric and the pattern at the same time because paper dulls scissors very quickly and can ruin fabric scissors over Ike. I know it is quicker but it would be better to have separate paper and fabric scissors.
