How Sony can seemingly go from the greatest Spider-Man films in the animated Spider-Verse films to complete and utter trash like these movies is beyond my comprehension.
Something tells me that Sony is ran by different people who some of them know what Spider Man actually is and need and the other ones just like to throw whatever the hell the Spider Man material has without a good script to work with
You know a movie is in big trouble when Sony brought back the writing team of Morbius to write the script for Madame Web. They really couldn't find any other writer huh? 😂😂
Its only because they were cheap. That's legit the only reason why there were brought in. or blackmail. Those are the only two options that happened, there is no in-between.
They where cheap, they where connected with the studio, and they couldn’t find other writers who wanted to do the project. The trifecta of how you can find work in Hollywood regardless of talent.
That's because they only have one superhero and all of these "other superheroes" were originally meant to support the core hero's narrative. I'm not saying stand-alone spinoffs can't work; Joker and Venom can attest to that but there's not much there yet Sony keeps digging. Who knows maybe Kraven or that el Muerto character that only appeared in a single Spider-Man story will be a hit.🤷♂️

My guess is it's a vision from the villains perspective from relatively early - why he's afraid, or a vision from DJ's perspective near the end - what she has maybe unleashed by saving them.
Sony might possibly be the most out of touch studio ever… this goes way back to Garfield’s planned trilogy. When the Sony emails got leaked they were discussing/planning the most bizarre ideas I’ve ever heard
To be fair "Dakota Johnson floats through it and doesn't seem to know what she's supposed to be doing there" could describe any Dakota Johnson performance I've seen.
I thought she was great in Cha Cha Real Smooth, so with the right material, she can do well. But that's the only performance I've seen her do that I've liked (also didn't like the other films themselves).

I don't remember what channel or when I saw a trailer of this movie, but I remember it looks more like thriller and doesn't seem like a superhero movie. So when the title "Madame Web" shown, I was like "wow, they made her origin movie like Final Destination!" Yeah, I give the movie maker too much credit. But thinking about it again, while probably still bad, if this movie not use superhero stuff but instead use supranatural detective story, it would far more interesting
I like Madame Web, the character, as a concept. She knows a lot about like the future and different realities, but only in the limited scope of spider related stuff. I also don't mind the idea of a teamup movie of Arana and other various spider ladies. However, taking those and mashing them together and getting the Morbius writers to Morb them together was... a choice, for sure.
Of all reviews I saw for this movie until now, Dan is the most polite and nice one, because he gave it "not a fan" score, while Jeremy Jahns gave it a straight up "dogshit" score.

As a Female director/writer why would you make your young female characters do absolutely nothing, show no promise of what they may become or any heroic characteristics? They are literally and figuratively passengers of the movie.
Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless co-wrote many other "great" scripts for movies such as Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, Gods of Egypt and the 2017 Power Rangers movie. Morbius is just their latest gem. It's not that they simply wrote a bad script once upon a time, they systematically and reliably deliver bad movie scripts. Perhaps it's a Mel Brooks "The Producers" situation.

Madame Web is the movie equivalent of ordering a club sandwich at a restaurant and the most appetizing thing about the entire sandwich is the toothpick holding it together
Pretty much that exactly. It was the future yet to be. Honestly wish they wore the suits in the film, but it was a huge tease instead. Bummer deal. I guess it was some idea to save it for a sequel. Which is not happening. I think 🤔

I went to go see it this weekend with my friend. I LOVED it. Not because it was good. But because I love watching befuddling, insane, terrible movies. One of my favourite’s is Jupiter Ascending. If you’re the kind of person who likes that kind of thing, I cannot recommend this enough.
I think it's Andrew Garthfields universe. The alternative ending on the amazing spiderman 2. Peter meet his dad who works for some government department in hiding. This lines up to what lines up.

Well it's a base line issue. The Marvels is infinitely better than this bilge, but compared to the rest of the MCU it is mid. Whereas these Spider-Man adjacent Sony films are all worse than The Marvels but about the same quality as each other.
As a massive Spider-man fan I really wanted this to be good but we all knew what we were getting when we first heard a Madame Web movie with no Spider-man by Sony was coming - dog sh!t. We knew.

Instead of Ezekiel, they could’ve made him an alternate version of Harry Osborne who got bit by the radioactive spider instead of Peter. Forget the whole prequel thing, turn his Peter into the Uncle Ben of the situation so that Norman can be a negative influence on Harry, and we’d get a morally dark or even evil Spiderman who is untouchable both in and out of his persona. It’d be a cool twist while referencing back to Spiderman lore
If they had just put Sydney Sweeney in some revealing outfit like Olivia Munn in that X-Men movie and just have going about her day it woulda made bank. They refuse to accentuate T&A these days even though that's what has sold since time immemorial.
The original Madam Web, I think she first appeared in 1981 or 84, was one of the coolest characters to show up in the Spiderman universe in a long time. A frail old lady, blind and hooked up to a funky DIY life support machine, with massive psychic abilities, was a great addition to an otherwise boring Kraven (I think it was Kraven) storyline. Still, the key ingredient to all this is Spiderman. Take Spiderman out and you got nothing.
I think it comes down to a weird contract stipulation. I read somewhere that they lose their exclusivity for Spider-Man and X-Men if they go more than a certain amount of time. So they just phone one in every year or two. Don’t really know if this is true but it sure would explain the inconsistency.
I watched it yesterday with my brother who has some health issues. It was fun hanging out with him even if we both didn't like the movie. Your review was spot on Dan!

I've been a comic book and cartoon fan for decades and at no point have I ever said Madame Web needs her own movie. She has a cool look currently in the comics but she really only shows up to set one of the Spider people on the direction the story needs.
hi Dan. when I first heard they were making a Madame Web movie, I was hoping she looked like what she looked like in the comics: imposing. Dakota Johnson can be described with many words, all positive, except anything having to do with those 3 movies. However, imposing, she is not.

I just found out yesterday that there is a rerelease of DUNE right now in my area. There are 2 IMAX screens in my area. I was excited I get to see Dune in IMAX. Noooooo...Madame Web is slated for IMAX presentation. 😖
i agree with absolutely everything you said yet i seemingly enjoyed it much more haha i hated the false advertising but still liked what we got. i remember specifically watching it thinking "this couldve worked as a decent superhero film in 2010" and can see everyone felt the same way. the whole opening sequence didnt need to be there and so much of the dialogue was terrible but i couldnt help have fun with it in a weird way
The weird thing about the trailers is that they took the Ezekiel character and pretty much just made him into Morlun. Even the premise of the movie feels like it was supposed to be a Final Destination but with a serial killer instead of Death, only to be turned into a Madame Web movie for no apparent reason.

The problem with Spider-Man’s supporting cast is that they’re, well, supporting cast. There’s a reason why many of them haven’t had solo comic runs, and the ones that have didn’t last very long. That being said it is not impossible to do a spinoff series with side characters, but it’s either got to be really good or really weird, I.e. Guardians of the Galaxy.
I wasn't going to see this movie, but I really liked Daredevil and the Fantastic Four (with Chiklis and Evans) so if this movie is in that company, I may go see it once I get back from the Amazon where I'm researching animated Prime Videos. Ironically, because of who Adam Scott is playing, this movie could have really played up the fact that we the audience know that's he is immortal up until the night he meets the Burglar or Sandman. That is, Cassie could have had many visions of Ben somehow blithely escaping danger in the early 2000s, with many quips about how lucky he is. But I don't think the writers of Morbius ever read a comic book or saw a movie.

Instead of Ezekiel, they could’ve made him an alternate version of Harry Osborne who got bit by the radioactive spider instead of Peter. Forget the whole prequel thing, turn his Peter into the Uncle Ben of the situation so that Norman can be a negative influence on Harry, and we’d get a morally dark or even evil Spiderman who is untouchable both in and out of his persona. It’d be a cool twist while referencing back to Spiderman lore

If they had just put Sydney Sweeney in some revealing outfit like Olivia Munn in that X-Men movie and just have going about her day it woulda made bank. They refuse to accentuate T&A these days even though that's what has sold since time immemorial.

The original Madam Web, I think she first appeared in 1981 or 84, was one of the coolest characters to show up in the Spiderman universe in a long time. A frail old lady, blind and hooked up to a funky DIY life support machine, with massive psychic abilities, was a great addition to an otherwise boring Kraven (I think it was Kraven) storyline. Still, the key ingredient to all this is Spiderman. Take Spiderman out and you got nothing.

I think it comes down to a weird contract stipulation. I read somewhere that they lose their exclusivity for Spider-Man and X-Men if they go more than a certain amount of time. So they just phone one in every year or two. Don’t really know if this is true but it sure would explain the inconsistency.

Sony just needs to give the rights to the Spider-Man characters back to Marvel. Because lately they've been dropping the ball when it comes to their own Marvel movies.

I've been a comic book and cartoon fan for decades and at no point have I ever said Madame Web needs her own movie. She has a cool look currently in the comics but she really only shows up to set one of the Spider people on the direction the story needs.

Dakota Johnson can be described with many words, all positive, except anything having to do with those 3 movies. However, imposing, she is not.
Yeah that's a problem with some movies instead of focusing on making a good movie. There are to focused on either setting up for sequels or setting up for their own Cinematic Universe.

I just found out yesterday that there is a rerelease of DUNE right now in my area. There are 2 IMAX screens in my area. I was excited I get to see Dune in IMAX.

i agree with absolutely everything you said yet i seemingly enjoyed it much more haha
i hated the false advertising but still liked what we got. i remember specifically watching it thinking "this couldve worked as a decent superhero film in 2010" and can see everyone felt the same way. the whole opening sequence didnt need to be there and so much of the dialogue was terrible but i couldnt help have fun with it in a weird way

The weird thing about the trailers is that they took the Ezekiel character and pretty much just made him into Morlun. Even the premise of the movie feels like it was supposed to be a Final Destination but with a serial killer instead of Death, only to be turned into a Madame Web movie for no apparent reason.

The problem with Spider-Man’s supporting cast is that they’re, well, supporting cast. There’s a reason why many of them haven’t had solo comic runs, and the ones that have didn’t last very long.
That being said it is not impossible to do a spinoff series with side characters, but it’s either got to be really good or really weird, I.e. Guardians of the Galaxy.
I wasn't going to see this movie, but I really liked Daredevil and the Fantastic Four (with Chiklis and Evans) so if this movie is in that company, I may go see it once I get back from the Amazon where I'm researching animated Prime Videos.
Ironically, because of who Adam Scott is playing, this movie could have really played up the fact that we the audience know that's he is immortal up until the night he meets the Burglar or Sandman. That is, Cassie could have had many visions of Ben somehow blithely escaping danger in the early 2000s, with many quips about how lucky he is. But I don't think the writers of Morbius ever read a comic book or saw a movie.
