Earvin Lied , He Wasnt even on the Court when this Play by the Doc happened, Landsbuger , Wilkins, Kareem, Chones, Nixon are the Lakers who are on the Court go to the 18 - 20 second mark , Earvin Stays telling Lies -
In the clip everyone talks about, Magic doesn't say was in the game, he was close to the play on the sideline with Michael Cooper. He was close enough to the play he could've asked him to do it again.
So, I was sitting in the old Spectrum in the second level, directly above that basket, when the play happened. Almost as crazy as the play itself was the absolute silence in the building while the play was happening. It was almost as if all 18,000 of us were holding our breath simultaneously because we just could not believe what we were seeing. It truly looked like he was WALKING ON AIR. When the ball dropped in, it went from complete silence to the loudest sound I have ever heard in my life. Forty-one years later, it remains the greatest athletic play I have ever seen in person.
I'm 57 years old, remember watching the playoffs on tape delay. That shot by Dr. J is the best shot I have ever seen. My jaw dropped, my eyes bugged out when I saw that in real time. After that happened, I said to myself, "best shot I have ever seen."
Seriously I have to agree with you. I'm 39 and this baseline scoop is burned into my brain. This is one of the best moments for sure, so much nostalgia watching this. Feel like I'm 8 again.😢
@@OikPoinFiveI don't think he had vcr😂, back then the games weren't broadcast live they were as he said tape delayed, they were broadcast after the newscast. Yes, even the finals.
We,ve seen guys "hang" in reverse layups, but its usually after going at full speed. He was going slow, took off, ducked his head under the goal, jumped, hung in mid air, contorted, and came up on the other side. Greatness.
Julius was a real life video game! He was a cultural icon in every sense-he paved the way for MJ-dude was on EVERYTHING too....on the back of comic books, in Pepsi ads, etc. I remember as a little kid growing up in the late 70s it was always about Ali, Bruce Lee, Dr J and Walter Payton....great time to be a fan of sports in general.
It does not matter how many times I see that move, every single time I find myself saying, "u have gotta be shitting me! That's insane!". Had the pleasure of meeting him in '99. Was such a thrill. I was in awe of who i was standing face-to-face shaking hands with.
If Dr.J's ABA Stats counted into NBA All Time Leader Rankings Julius Erving would be: 5th All Time In Points with 30,026 5th In FG Made with 11,818 7th in Steals with 2,272 19th in Blocks with 1,941 28th In Rebounds with 10,525 16 All Star Appearances 4 Season MVP's 2 All Star MVP's 3 Championships
Underrated aspect of this is that he palms the ball directly off his dribble, without even touching it with his left hand. Dr J must have some HUGE hands.
Watched a recent interview, you can see his thumb hangs way off the side of his hand. Even MJ normally presses the ball into his right before doing something fancy.
Dr. J is the man. Sports Illustrated dubbed this "The, No Way, even for Dr. J, Flying Reverse Lay-up" saying Dr. J's path to the basket was currently blocked by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar so Dr. J improvised his shot into one that would be remembered for decades, perhaps centuries.
Love the finesse, and the way Erving uses the rim to shield his shot. There is no running over people. stiff arming, butt bumping, elbow to the face. This is exactly how the game should be played.
When I saw this live it was the most inspiring/uplifting athletic move I ever saw. After this I thought the Sixers were gonna win. I was wrong but what an incredible moment in time
As someone with next to no interest in basketball (this side of playing NBA Jam on the SNES) that is just epic. Up there with OBJ's catch vs Cowboys for sheer defiance of science.
Michael jordan fans eat your heart out. This was the original real deal. Against an all time laker team, dr. J gracefully pulled off one of the most iconic shots ever!!! All lakers fans love dr. J. Even if you were against him, you always wanted to see him play amazing bball.
Incorrect. Connie Hawkins was another. His hands were longer than Dr J. In fact, the two played against each other. Elgin Baylor was another with big hands and control of the ball.
@@epicsseven7686 The size of the hands isnt the only reason they could do these moves, im referring to skill and athletic gift, those two were in a class by themselves above others.
I am in total agreement with you ! However,I would just like to add something else with your comment ! In my personal opinion this move was performed by the most exciting basketball player of all time ! Julius The Doctor Winfield Erving !
That move needs a screenshot and should be the LOGO for the NBA period!! Power-Glide.......Cloud 9..........Hanging Basket?? The Dr was and is the epitome of the NBA.....................holding the ball like an apple, Lakers:"WTF just happened". Awesome!!
dude..almost got me doin the same..That is one of the Dr.s sickest moves right there...players today WISH they could float like the Dr...aint happenin..))..late
@picklejarzz Great hands are awesome... today's game, Blake has a great hands and leap high also... but of course he can't do a fluid motion like that... he is just not so skilled... just raw talent...
I tried this. I dropped the ball halfway through cause I can't palm it like that -_- So I just tried a two hand reverse like this instead. It looked like an invisible man fouled me because I came back down to earth about 10 times faster than Dr. J so I chucked it up and while I did get to the other side of the hoop with my jump, I airballed it about 10 miles away from the net.
This was the golden age of the NBA when they had phenomenal players.
Every age of the nba had phenomenal players
Years later, Magic Johnson admitted that he didn't know whether to pass the ball in bounds or ask Dr. J to do it again. That move is still unreal!

Single greatest move in NBA history in my opinion.

Apparently he used to do that frequently in the ABA when it wasn’t televised
bruh aba dr j is prime dr j. nba dr j is considered dr j letting go of the gas for his team mates
I used to watch him when he was on the Nets. Yeah, on TV.

The most beautiful layup every excecuted in a game
You never see modern day basketball players do this. This is spectacular.

One of the Big 4 Most Influential, alongside Iverson, MJ and Steph.
Iconic
GREATEST
Only Dr J and MJ could do moves like this, they had so much control of the ball with one hand it was remarkable.
I’ve seen Kawhi catch the ball like a tennis ball and do a fake pass like Jordan. Maybe he could do it if he tried.

What about Iceman's finger roll layup?

Best NBA Play Ever!
Best lay up in NBA history??
i also tried to do this at home and the ball hit the bottom of the backboard and hit my face, then i hit my head on the pole
beautiful
this is probably my favorite move done by any nba player ever.
His wingspan and hand size must have been inhuman. Jordan had huge hands but not even he could palm a ball like that
I think it is the #1 layup ever , #2 is nick youngs 360 reverse ... thumbs up if you agree
THERES NO WAY SOMEONE WHO's STRAIGHT COULD DISLIKE THIS.
That made me tear up...
Nothing is as good at recreating this moment than when Dr J showed Jim Halpert from Athlead how the layup looked
I love Magic Johnson's response on Dr.J's famous layup stating that it was just too much for him.
