There is a difference between zero'd out and zero overwritten. The latter doesn't set your filesize to 0, it only overwrites the whole size with 00's, keeping the size intact. This also needs time. A lot, depending how much files (and size) you have. This virus just truncates the file and sets it to 0. The files are still there but very hard to reassemble when fragmented, as their info is lost.
I can imagine when that was first written... it was probably prominent... not that piracy is not commmon anymore, but it doesn't seem to be as much of a vector for malicious files.

VLC has a feature to take a screen capture of one frame! Go to "view" - "advanced controls" and then there's a camera button on the bottom left.
