I would love it if Box Pixel would make an aluminum shell that is ready for the screen upgrade. That way I could do this mod and reverse it in the future if I wanted. Actually, even better would be a screen that fits without any case modifcation.

So the via D204 is where you get CSYNC from? Sorry that wasn't very clear to me. Couldn't you just run the wire through the via to the CSYNC pin on the chip nearby?
I had mine done by a guy named Chris Brown. I found him on ebay. I believe he did a composite upgrade with the bigger screen. I notice a little flicker on the screen on blank backgrounds with the brightness turned up. Would this upgrade improve it?? He also made it to where I can hook it up to a TV and put a region free switch on it to change to play PC engine games.
Great Video, I would love to do this to my GT but i can't bring myself to Cut the Shell. i wish someone would make a replacement shell or make a no cut screen replacement.
Ya need an soldering station with a higher thermal capacity. That thing was really struggling to wet the pool, even tho it appeared to be running too hot. Some flux would help as well. Saw a few cold joins but whatever. You got the job done. Not to mention a hot air setup. You will never go back to an iron for smd caps after using hot air. Parts slide in like Butter Great job! Ceramic caps have some properties that are different from electrolytic caps. Sometimes it’s ok to convert electrolytics to ceramic, but not always. It’s safer to keep the design original when possible
@@LIRetroGaming Many thanks!, any reason why you didn't use the quick install plug in solder board rather than soldering onto the ribbon connector on this one?
But despites the originallcd was RGB, it just more looked like composite video, because small white letters did look rainbowish, wich is pretty strange.
Man, I really wish there were aftermarket shells for this handheld so we wouldn't have to butcher and potentially destroy an original shell to fit this new display. That said, has there since been a new, functional 3D print bracket for the screen?
It depends, but a lot of times they need to route the traces onto the opposite side of the board just because there are so many. By having two or more layers they can make more connections. Other times they do serve as test points
It really dpends on the system for me, the game gear sold rather well so it's okay in terms of finding/doing mods with, PCE Express on the other hand..

Do you still update the turbo express ? I have not used my turbo express in a long time I can’t find my games yet . How much to upgrade and change capacitors.
Question I had about the mod I noticed it had the shielding on when you open it but didn’t see the shielding at the end. Did you leave the metal shielding out?
I have a question do you do this as a service I have a PC engine GT which is already had the 3.5 inch screen upgraded but I noticed those horizontal gel barlines it's already been recapped but I'm pretty sure those little caps that you just changed were not changed what would it cost to change those tiny little caps I'm in New York
I'm troubleshooting a TE that powers, but does not send game video to the screen either through composite or RGB. One oddity I noticed is the positive pad at CC503 is continuous with ground anywhere else on the board with or without the the cap soldered. Any ideas? There's no visible damage to the traces and the screen will display a solid color, just no game video or audio.
That’s a challenge and it’s hard to say without looking at it. If cc503 is shorted to ground then the short might be somewhere else on the board. Can you find a short on other locations on the board?
No other power shorts. But I do have continuity on 2 address pins on the cart connector. I traced those back to the RAM chip. Possible bad RAM or CPU? I had also read somewhere that the TE has two ground planes, like an A and B. TE documentation is just so scarce online.
Honestly on the stock unmodded version the screen doesn't look THAT bad. Obviously it's bad compared to today's standards. But for 1990 it looks really good.

I like to take it slow when trimming the shell. One wrong move with the dremel and you end up cutting something that you didn’t intend
Are all those Hudson chips the exact sane chips that were used on the Turbografx 16?
Yes, they’re exactly the same chips
Newbie question: why use the kynar wire for c-sync connection rather than the same kind you used for everything else?
I used kynar for that connection because the via is too small for normal 28 gauge stranded wires
Because the connection flows via the via.

Ceramic caps have some properties that are different from electrolytic caps. Sometimes it’s ok to convert electrolytics to ceramic, but not always. It’s safer to keep the design original when possible
Since this is RGB, does that mean that it's using the PCE RGB color palette specifically?
