- As I look at you
A thought goes through my mind
What a marvellous find
You'd make upon the screen
I'm proud that I have you
Right by my side
But I'd be satisfied to lend you
To the public to be seen
You oughta be in pictures
You're wonderful to see
You oughta be in pictures
Oh, what a hit you would be
Your voice would thrill a nation
Your face would be adored
You'd make a great sensation
With wealth and fame your reward
And if you should kiss the way you kiss
When we are all alone
You'd make every girl and man
A fan worshiping at your throne
You oughta shine as brightly
As Jupiter and Mars
You oughta be in pictures
My star of stars
You oughta be in pictures
You're wonderful to see
You oughta be in pictures
Oh, what a hit you would be
You're lovely as a Crawford
Like Davies you are gay
You surely should be offered
A starring part - right away
You're sweet as a Gaynor
And you're hot as a gal named West
You'd even make Garbo jealous
If you took a movie test
You oughta dress like Tashman
And ride in motor cars
You oughta be in pictures
My star of stars!
Lyrics & Music by Edward Heyman and Dana Suesse
Performed by Rudy Vallee & His Connecticut Yankees
Here from Grey Gardens! Little Edie was a darling💞
This song is lyrical genius. The wording of the tune is organic/alive. The skilled writers used a masking, “Indian Trail” technique wherein the listener cannot guess what word will be rhymed with the lead-in word. Not only are the lyrics genius, the overall sound of tune is superb; it must have been very popular in its day.
I think Cole Porter used this technique, to effortless match first rhythm, then music, and finally, his superb lyrics.
Thank you for the education!
I am continually astonished by how much I don't know.
Let Me Explain Studios brought me here.
Thanks, Rebecca Paraham!
PurpleCryingGuy Nice to know I ain't the only one.
PurpleCryingGuy omg same!
Looks like Rebecca is the ultimate spreader of musical joy
Yeah same

Im here from MASH when klinger cut colonel potters hair
Wah wah
Same... Knock off the wah wahs
I'm here from M*A*S*H when Hawk and BJ's Polaroid was stolen
Watch out for that mole
Haha me too. I have the whole series
Ooh I love this song!! Older songs give a certain feeling, ya know?
Little Eddie in grey gardens sung this,I love it
thats why im here
Me too!
Oh Yessss immortal lyrics....
Also why I'm here
I'm here because I have the sheet music printed in 1935, found in a pile abandoned in Portobello Road, but had never actually heard it before. It's pretty good!
I don't care what anyone says, Rudy Vallee rocked!
He did.. rock like a giant. Seriously, in the late 20’s and early thirties. He was the first global singing mega star, as big as Elvis and the Beatles later became.
One of my grandmother's favorite singers. She had the 78 records and a RCA victrola. That's when I was very small about 60 years ago. She was a great woman.
Rudy vallee! there will never be another equal for crooning the romantic lyric and what a personality, what a guy!
Boola, Boola!!
Let me Explain Studios brought me here! Thanks, Rebecca Parham!
edit: it’s been 2 years i forgot this comment even exsisted
SAME HERE ME TO!!!!!
Eric Cire woW this comment is REALLY old
I LOVE THIS SONG.
Brasil?
According to MusicVF (a great site for checking out music that hit the charts), You Oughta was simultaneously charting for 20 weeks between May and September 1934 for both Little Jack Little reaching number 2, and Rudy Vallee reaching number 5. Music like this makes me wonder what would happen to an adult 'contemporary' radio station's ratings if they would spice up their playlist with a 'non-contemporary' tune like this. It's not how OLD it is, It's how GOOD it is that oughta count.
Thank you - my memory returns - watching the picture shows with my parents.
A great time with Happy songs. Songs you can understand
This song is long before my time but I think it’s brilliant
Rudy & Ruby - What a combination!
Grey gardens brought me here.....Edie should have covered this.....she did an amazing rendition!
I feel like I'm walking into Disney's Hollywood Studios!
More like Warner Bros.
It was in an add for Halloween horror nights!!!!
here after watching the 'Grey Gardens' docco...awww little edie...legend
She’s beautiful
Barbara Stanwyck, wow!!! She was just adorable.
Didn't recognize her! The Big Valley, great show.
This has Lil’ Edie Beale name all over the place. Absolutely love this song!
My dear voice coach "Flora" (a retired voice instructor from the Julliard Academy in NYC) taught me this song (years back) and I loved it. She had me sing (in the last line) what sounded like, "My star of staaars" - instead of "stars" as the last word. When I asked her about it she simply said that it sounded better for me. So that was that, and that's how I sang it - bless her heart and rest her soul. I miss her to this day.
Great Song, nice tune
Dick Powell sang a fabulous version on radio.
I always found Dick Powell and Rudy Vallee very similar. I guess it was sound of the era, the way to croon. I think that’s why Bing became such a big star round about the same time, because he sounded a bit different, deeper and richer.
Dick Powell sang an outstanding version of “You Oughta Be In Pictures” on his radio program around 1934. Brilliant!!!
Rudy Vallee and Al Bowlly. God sent. Also Rich Conaty who brought their music to the masses. RIP.
A lot of people don't realize how attractive Barbara Stanwyck was in her youth, since most people now know her mainly as the matriarch of the Barkley family.
She had a great film career but, for most of us, it was before our time.
@@basilmarasco1975 See Christmas in Connecticut- 1945 film- a real joy.
@@bobbywimsy6741 I have that movie somewhere on VHS (home recording). But no more VHS player!
Cool. I'd never heard the full song. I'm actually distantly related to Vallee (neither here nor there), and was surprised to hear the Mae West, Greta Garbo, and Joan Crawford references. Well, Janet Gaynor, too. She was big box office at the time, but her name (not to mention Lilyan Tashman's) has not carried down to the present like the other three. Thanks for sharing.
Just discovered Tashman died the year this came out. Maybe the lyricist was a friend.
He also mentions Marion Davies. Most people today don't recognize her, even if they do know of her famous sugar daddy, publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, the inspiration for the classic film *Citizen Kane.*
Here from Grey Gardens!💜
Im here from M.A.S.H.!!!
I just finished that episode. Lol. Hands down funniest show of all time!
one of the greats!!jo atlanta
I love this
My very favorite Rudy Vallee song! Thanks for posting :-D
You're wonderful to see♫
My star of stars♫
LOVE IT SO MUCH.
My Dad (Jimmie Hanson aka Ted Hanson) was Rudy's star trumpet player for about 6 years, until Rudy went to Hollywood. He used to drive one of Rudy's 2 V-16 Cadillacs up to Maine in the summer, when the whole "Connecticut Yankees" gang would go vacation at Rudy's summer compound on Keiser Lake. After Rudy went west, Dad joined up with Fred Waring and did his marvelous trumpet playing as a "Pennsylvanian" for the next 10 or so years.
My wife's cousin remembers seeing Fred Waring in Baltimore in the 50s. I told her I was jealous of her (except for the part where she's 20 years older than I am).
@@ronaldcammarata3422 They came to Portland, Maine in 1970 and did a marvelous show. Fred was active up into the late 1970s.
@@erichanson3961 I might have mentioned this here before but I sold menswear as a high schooler at the late venerable Houseman & Jones, " Houseman's", in my hometown of Grand Rapids , Mich and Fred Waring " and his New Pennsylvanians " I think they were billed at the time , mid and late 1970s, had a stop in Grand Rapids every December in the run-up to Christmas. Mr. Waring always stopped in the store and would have a look around then buy a small item, pair of socks, 3-pak of undershirts, etc. I always thought that was so cool. And he was always such a nice, dignified gentleman . He really was an amazing man. Had a hot band with his brother Tom in the 1920s and never quit performing. Along the way he brought us the Waring " Blendor" ( blender) and also founded what eventually became the World's largest music publisher. Cannot recall the name. He would not sit still. What a life, what a guy !
@@gregorypalmer5403 Shawnee Press was the music publishing arm.
Golly, Barbara Stanwyck was an absolute doll.
Hubba hubba.
Her eyes, her look has turned this grumpy metalhead into a melted puddle of mush.

Wonderful, I love this song. One minor error in the words "What a marvellous time
You'd make upon the screen" Should be "What a marvellous find
You'd make upon the screen"
Thanks, I changed it.
Great !! Bouncy !
Hope Joe and Jill dance to it at the Inauguration.
I heard this melody of this song as a kid in Looney tunes, Tom and Jerry and, the Dean Martin Show.
Tom and Jerry never played this
@@jamircox8458 I stand corrected, I meant looney tunes.

Wasn't a slower cover of this used as the theme song for Halloween Horror Nights' The Director?
I'm here because of The Director from Halloween Horror Nights #HHN

DAD'S ARMY brought me here.. DON'T PANIC CAPTAIN MAINWARING!
My mom would sing the refrain around the house, when I was a kid. That's dating me, lol!
Klinger- "You oughta be in pictures. Wa wa. You're so beautiful to see. Wa wa wa wa." Col. Potter- "Klinger, knock off the wa wa's." Sadly Klinger also sung this again right before he was arrested for a stolen good that he did not steal.
Rebecca Parham brought me here!
This is the director theme song for Halloween horror nights
This beat all the crap these days
Thanks for this! One minor thing: "Davis" should be "Davies" -- as in Marion Davies.
Changed, thanks. I assumed Bette but her career had just begun, Marion Davies was the bigger star. And a fun actress in King Vidor's silent movies.
***** Thanks for your quick response. I especially appreciate your having the full lyrics here! I searched all over the Internet, and most places stopped after the "Jupiter and Mars" stanza. The individual mentions of the stars of the day was perhaps the most interesting part for me.
