Tiny Tim used to talk a lot about Rudy Vallee. Indeed, hearing the man himself now it seems that Tim was almost channeling Vallee through the filter of his own eccentricities.
@@Salvnyc_ For 20's music? My 20's playlist is all Rudy Vallee and a bunch of deleted videos, sadly. I should have made a list of what they were. Rudy is all that's left.
I was lucky enough to have a stepfather who owned a record store in the 1950s. Back then, you could still find some of the swing music. My real father's mother had a collection of sheet music and a piano, but I can't remember her ever using a record-player.
I have a really beat Velvet-Tone disc of this that I found at an estate sale in 1986, just shortly before Mr. Vallee passed away. It was nice to hear a clean copy. Thanks!
Still my idol classic ... and fortunate to have met and dined with Rudy back in NJ in the '70s. Imagine two high school kids listening to Rudy while our peers listened to the Dead!
It's interesting that the near-falsetto sensuality of Vallee's voice, combined with his "bedroom eyes" made him the "Elvis" of his generation. In his later years he played a "cartoon" of himself. It's interesting that in an interview, he spoke of his first movie, based on his song hit "Vagabond Lover" as being so bad they are "... still fumagating the theaters where it played." I would have love to have met him. Great song. Great rendition. Rudy, we miss you. Dennis
Stanley Kubrick listened to this during the making of The Shining. you can see it in the Making Of documentary for the film. Its the part when stanley puts a vinyl onto a record player.

Pretty lovely. Those of us who listened to Rich Conaty’s program on WFUV on Sunday nights will feel very happy listening to Mr. Vallee. Not just a pretty voice but good production values as well, don’t you think?
When Rudy first heard Bing he said " My days are numbered." That Irish mordent displaced his status. Oh, well. Enjoy it while you got it. From: Tucson Ukulele Lady ❤️
I should hate this song. When my wife hears it, she always looks at me, disapprovingly: "Why can't you be so romantic!?" I must find an instrumental version.
@LordWham :-) If you have listened to the version on youtube you should know that it's recorded too fast. You'll find the song with the correct speed on iTunes.
Oh phooey! Rudy Vallee isn't doing anyone but Rudy Vallee. He and Al Bowlly are both their own men, and didn't have imitate anybody. As to the immortal Judy Garland, who even knew she recorded this song? Ignorant rather than chauvinistic probably is more to the point. Cliff Edwards' version is my personal favorite (and I absolutely LOVE both R.V and A.B.) Ukelele Ike delivers the song with such a light, gallant touch, almost tossing it off, that it has a particular poignance. "There is nothing I couldn't do, if I had you." That's the inspiration of love alright.
Paul Micelli, It's not my commercial. I've never tried to profit from anything I have posted. There is always someone trying to claim they own the rights for a few pennies.
He was complemented by President FDR on this one during the "crash" he said the song picked up the spirits of the Nation. (someone told me that),,,But the year is wrong so......
Franklin Roosevelt publicly asked Rudy Vallee whether he could write a song that would make the Americans forget the Depression. I think this was the song.
If ever there were two songs that fit FDR they were Happy Days are Here Again ( See the two movies Sunrise at Campobello (1960), and Warm Springs (2005), and the other song, Thou Swell, Thou Witty, Thou Grand. Boy do we need an FDR now, one who is not simply "of the People, by the People, and for the People" but one who is WITH the people in our sufferings. Whom may that be? I think it just might be Tammy Duckworth, of Illinois. Check her out via Google. I love Georgia, and take care.
Quintessential 20s//30s music - Rudy's voice seems to have epitomised male singers of the period. Pretty good too. For mine though, a couple of years later Al Bowlly came on the scene - in my view, never surpassed
I am torn between this version and the Commanders version..it's a great tune! I do really like the piano solo, of course, since I too play piano. I actually think this version has more snap! :) FAVS!!AND SUB!
***@Frycook48 - Yes indeed ........ now to find modern young ladies that love this type music! :) Are they out there? Benny Goodman did a fantastic job with this song too! :)***

I am as anxious to find her as an astronomer on egg shells for that first squeak of life beyond Earth.
This is great, don't get me wrong, but to me the Bing Crosby singing with Sam Lanin & Orchestra is one of the tops. Although this certainly is crackerjack.

Rudy is from my Grandmother's gen. but still find his style, precision and delivery to be timeless. So simple, so beautful.
serferten I saw him on Broadway in HOW TO SUCCEED.

Absolutely wonderful
Rudy Vallee was very popular when I was in my twenties and thirties. I bought lots of his records in the 20's and 30's.
Oldtime music is forever good. I love it.
Beautiful voice and style. Great personality, and good-looking (when he was young.)
I've always been a fan of Durante. I just listened to his version of the tune over on Rhapsody. Very nice & tender indeed...!

Nice song, very nice performance!
Awesome and rare clip! Great singing and playing by the Mack Daddy of all us crooners, Rudy Vallee.
It is, indeed, a great version of a great song.

Very nice - and the trombone solo shows that Vallée's band certainly could provide a dose of jazz every now and then.
Great work Rudy!
Gosh, I just love this guy!
