I think It's really hard for asian directors to survive in hollywood, let alone make it to the oscars. They have very different cultural backgrounds and different sense of mutuality that make it so hard for people to understand their values or messages to the fullest. That is why Ang Lee is so special, he's a once in a lifetime director.
@@deensaid7762 Ang Lee won two times in directing, and he directed 3 oscar movie (not only one by Bong), and Crouching Tiger maybe became the first Asian movie won best picture if not against Gladiator (one of the best movie ever made). Ang Lee is still the most successful asian director in oscar.
@@deensaid7762 Yeah, I'm actually Korean and that was freakin' awesome. It's an even greater feat considering Bong's films were domestic while Lee's were hollywood-made. I still however believe that it's directors like Lee who paved the way. Anyway I'm grateful to live in an era where Asian directors really make a name for themselves.
Suraj Sharma the boy who plays Pi is a brilliant actor. I love this film and its just so Amazing. Suraj Sharma honestly shud hav gotten an Oscar nomination for his role. He literally carried that movie. Amazing.

Updiwasa No he didn't. The Life of Pi was stupid and not as good as it could have been. This Oscar belonged to either Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained or Ben Affleck for Argo or Steven Spielberg for Lincoln
+Jacob Duran I don't think argo deserved for shit. they only awarded that film because it was Making hollywood important. As they will probably do for this year in Trumbo. but I agree with django. it was hell of a good movie.
Updiwasa Argo was a great movie it deserved the best picture award. Ben Affleck directed one hell of a film. Trumbo is not gonna win Best Picture. Either The Revenant or The Hateful Eight or Bridge of Spies will win the Best Picture award
Ang Lee is one of the most diverse filmmakers working today; all his films are from a range of different genres. I mean he went from directing a Chinese Martial Arts movie (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) to a Superhero movie (Hulk) to a Romantic Drama (Brokeback Mountain) to a Chinese Erotic Thriller (Lust, Caution) a Comedy (Taking Woodstock) and now a family film (Life of Pi). You can't get more diverse than that.
He has three. He won for producer as well for Schindler's List. I said he's a director that has three Oscars, not three Oscars won for the category of Best Director. Also David O. Russell >>>>>>>>>>>>> Ang Lee
moviemaniac14 I was talking about him as a director, but ok. When it comes down to it, though, Life of Pi is about 50 times better than Silver Linings Playbook.
+The Joker This movie was over the moon beautiful, took hard work, fucking great acting, amazing story that didn't offend the original book, and yet you're on your couch eating potato chips and complaining. Now THAT'S shit
The brilliant thing about Life of Pi was that it was a showcase of mastery direction. I think people who say he didn't deserve it are blatantly dismissing this film as just a visual showcase when it really so much more. The amount of art and symbolism mixed intelligence and real emotional resonance. It also took 3D to a really new level (even beyond Avatar) that I really haven't seen since is why he deserved the Oscar. My other nominees would have been Bigelow, Zeitlin, Spielberg, and Haneke. I think all of them would have been deserving winners actually. Lee just did something really extraordinary with Life of Pi and I'm happy he won. The Director's Branch of the Academy is filled with both studio directors and auteur filmmakers, and with the ranking ballot system, I bet a lot of those directors put the five actual nominees in the 1 or 2 slot. Affleck may have possibly been in the most ballots but if he was mostly ranked as 4 or 5 he would lose out to a nominee who was on less ballots but placed 1 or 2 on more ballots. I think that's how Zeitlin and Haneke got in over Affleck. You know those two were pure passion picks, and I applaud the Director's branch for being brave enough to go that way and appreciate actual artists. I would have only been happier if they they replaced David O. Russell with Bigelow. Despite all the ridiculous hoopla about Affleck getting snubbed (which helped it's Best Pic chances), the standing ovation Lee received here speaks for itself.
+SDoesNotKnow the only bad aspect about his speech is that most of the work was done by rythm and hues. About 80% of the whole movie was made by visual effects artists, and they didn't even get mentioned. Makes you wonder how "great" this guy is. Check the Ex-Machina speech and you'll see how it's done :)
I think "this guy" aka, the very well-respected among his peers, Ang Lee's filmography speaks for itself. It's not as if Life of Pi was his first well-received film, and it's not like he just took a back seat and didn't give his artistic vision. Obviously Life of Pi was a beautiful visual showcase, and Rhythm and Hues should be applauded, but downplaying Lee's work doesn't do much except show you don't know how important it is to have a very excellent director to make it go beyond a showcase. "During the last few weeks, Lee has also received honorary awards from the Visual Effects Society and International 3D Society in recognition of how he has pushed the creative and technical filmmaking envelope during production of Pi - by shooting in 3D, mixing with Dolby’s immersive new sound format Atmos and rendering a photo-real CG tiger through the VFX process." www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/life-pi-director-ang-lee-422270 So it seems visual effects people know how great "this guy" is. I think people who are criticizing his speech are seriously reaching for something to criticize and I suspect some are just using his "omission" in this ONE speech when he praised his crew and team from the time Life of Pi was released on to attack him because they didn't think he should have won or they were VFX people who at the time were angry at the whole business for undervaluing their work and got mad about this one incident and taking Lee's quote about how costly the whole endeavor was to the point where R&H couldn't make a profit and went into bankruptcy during this time period way out of context. I seriously believe people in the VFX were hurting and started using Lee as some sort of scapegoat when he didn't say anything about paying VFX less.
SDoesNotKnow you should read more about the vfx industry, it's not something you literally discuss with the studios, first of all, it was how the industry was working at that time. 2nd, when i'm criticizing him, i'm criticizing because he takes all the credit for the images, and does not give credit to the thousands of artists that brought the visuals to life.
I'm so glad that Ang Lee got this! I thought Spielberg would, and he did an amazing job with Lincoln, but Life of Pi truly was a beautiful masterpiece, and Ang's work was just breathtaking.
the symbolisms and hidden messages in this movie are just crazy!! this movie is totally not just about visual effects, though they are excellent. the first time i watched it, i thought of it as just a well-filmed adventure story with great effects, but then when i watched it the second time and actually payed attention to every objects and scenes in the movie, the hidden messages are just amazing to notice

First they didn't nominate Ang Lee as Best Director for Sense & Sensibility. Then they didn't award him for Crouching Tiger & Hidden Dragon, even after he won the Director Guild Award. And after that they DID award him for Brokeback Mountain - and infamously ditched the movie itself, crowning Paul Haggis Crash instead. And after all that "misfortune", he finally hat some luck with the oscars - the luck that they didn't nominate Ben Affleck, who would have definetily won :D It was the best move the academy could have made after snubbing Affleck. What a great director.
Ang Lee's win is more impressive. Bong Joon Ho's win is thanks to BTS impact in American entertainment. You can not deny the fact that Korean artists (directors, actors, actresses and singers) gain much attention in the U.S. after BTS paved the way for them in the world's biggest market.

We didn't get to see David O. Russell's face, that's what I call pretty straight karma... Here's the story: At the Bafta's the same year, the cameraman took his reaction when this woman, Emmauelle Riva won Best Actress over front-runner Jennifer Lawrence, and his reaction is priceless, he was so annoyed, like when you're 5 years old, can't handle your emotions and accept your team lose and gives the WTF is this sh!t ?! expression. Now, for a moment, a similar situation happened, the irony of life...
That is so true! I read the book years ago in high school, and it was so though to fit everything into your imagination, let alone to realize it on screen. When I heard Jean Pierre Jeunet dropped out of the project, I thought it would not be continued Thank God, someone so brave like Ang Lee stepped in and take the lead. Powerful film! His wise 3D aesthetic put Avatar into shame!
I loved "Life of Pi", I remember feeling very sad when the tiger went away not to come back anymore. After watching the tiger all throughout the movie, you feel like losing a family member.
My Nominations: - Ben Affleck - Argo - Quentin Tarantino - Django Unchained - Ang Lee - Life Of Pi - Steven Spielberg - Lincoln - David O. Russell - Silver Linings Playbook
He may not have mentioned VFX specifically, but he did say at the beginning that he thanked everyone, all 3,000, who worked on this film. He was obviously nervous as this was most likely unexpected unlike when he won for Brokeback Mountain...
Shahaaim the worst part is that the VFX company that did the work for Life of Pi, Rythym and Hues went bankrupt around this time and the Oscars shunned that fact

i don't know Emanuelle Riva directed Silver Linings Playbook.
She sure did a great job.
Ang Lee is just wonderful!
The young boy deserved to win an Oscar he was phenomenal and it’s still one of my favorite movies till date.
Life of Pi was AMAZING. He deserved it...the scenes were so well filmed and thought of
Let's make it a three-timer for Ang Lee for directing 'Billy Lynn's Long HalfTime Walk'.
Yeah..I don't see any film this year that rival Ang's.
movie sucks dick
that movie was awful
fail
he already has 3 actually. for crouching tiger....
the nicest guy in hollywood, you just want him to win every oscars
First they didn't nominate Ang Lee as Best Director for Sense & Sensibility. Then they didn't award him for Crouching Tiger & Hidden Dragon, even after he won the Director Guild Award. And after that they DID award him for Brokeback Mountain - and infamously ditched the movie itself, crowning Paul Haggis Crash instead. And after all that "misfortune", he finally hat some luck with the oscars - the luck that they didn't nominate Ben Affleck, who would have definetily won :D
It was the best move the academy could have made after snubbing Affleck. What a great director.
Argo was the worst movie out of the 8 nominees.Tarantino,Bigelow and Hooper deserved to get nominated more than Affleck.
He did win for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for Best Foreign Language Film
Steven soderbergh deserved that Oscar for directing traffic tho
He is a legend and an inspiration for the younger generation.
wow nobody talks about Michael Haneke here? Shame on y'all!
Ang Lee walked so Bong Joon Ho could run
Ang Lee's win is more impressive. Bong Joon Ho's win is thanks to BTS impact in American entertainment. You can not deny the fact that Korean artists (directors, actors, actresses and singers) gain much attention in the U.S. after BTS paved the way for them in the world's biggest market.

Namaste 🙏 Ang Lee

Im so grateful for stories like this,i will pass this on to my kids one day.👏🏽🖤🏆
I love Ang's art work
Ok he's probably the first winner ever(that i know of) that thanked his lawyers
thanking lawyers?
Wish I saw this in IMAX 3D. One of the few movies that would have been worth it
+The Bear from The Revenant: it really is
He beat Spielberg 2x. Life of Pi was a great film.
Spielberg probably don't want Oscar anymore after winning twice, i'm pretty sure he voted ang Lee to win
A Taiwanese man directing a movie in English, Hindi and Tamil. Definitely deserved it 👏🏻👏🏻
1:08 michael haneke was like "pshhh of course" lol
One of those rare times when there was genuine suspense in a major Oscar category.
I LOVED THIS PICTURE!!! one of my favorite pictures ever *-*
Life of PI
Is one of the best films that I’ve ever seen
Life of pi. i personally think was really hard script to make movie. Ang lee is genious. Great.

Ang Lee ROCKS!
Un gran director 👏👏👏👏👏
We didn't get to see David O. Russell's face, that's what I call pretty straight karma... Here's the story: At the Bafta's the same year, the cameraman took his reaction when this woman, Emmauelle Riva won Best Actress over front-runner Jennifer Lawrence, and his reaction is priceless, he was so annoyed, like when you're 5 years old, can't handle your emotions and accept your team lose and gives the WTF is this sh!t ?! expression. Now, for a moment, a similar situation happened, the irony of life...
Ang Lee is the pride of Taiwan. Thank you Ang Lee and thank you Taiwan!
Legend has it that the cameraman is still looking for David O'Russel to this day...
Ang Lee is my entire world an entire artist!
Life of pie is a fantastic movie. I never see the beauty of ocean like this movie shows.
So well deserved! What a great movie, great directing...... Mr. Ang Lee, you are a visionary!
Ang Lee won over Spielberg twice! Once in 2006, and now in 2013! That's just toooo good.
God, I love him, amazing director with this PERFECT movie!
Hi Ang Lee you look great and very talented . From Singapore 🇸🇬
David O. Russell was so nervous he lost he turned into Emmanuelle Riva
Thanks ang lee for making such an awesome movie
That's right!! He deserved so much that standing ovation! They all knew he deserved it
I loved "Life of Pi", I remember feeling very sad when the tiger went away not to come back anymore. After watching the tiger all throughout the movie, you feel like losing a family member.
He deserved it life of pi was amazing
My Nominations:
- Ben Affleck - Argo
- Quentin Tarantino - Django Unchained
- Ang Lee - Life Of Pi
- Steven Spielberg - Lincoln
- David O. Russell - Silver Linings Playbook
Paul Thomas Anderson for The Master over Russell and it would be perfect.
Well deserved. How do you even make a movie like Life of Pi? He made the movie look absolutely magical
He thanked the whole Taiwan and he forgot to thank the VFX crew who sort of made 80% visuals of the movie possible! Including the f-ing tiger! Lol
He may not have mentioned VFX specifically, but he did say at the beginning that he thanked everyone, all 3,000, who worked on this film. He was obviously nervous as this was most likely unexpected unlike when he won for Brokeback Mountain...
I am surprised he didn't mention Irrfan
@@gmail7894 irffan had a short role in the movie...main role of pi was played by Suraj
Shahaaim the worst part is that the VFX company that did the work for Life of Pi, Rythym and Hues went bankrupt around this time and the Oscars shunned that fact
