I have a 6,7,8, & 9 string. The 6 & 7 are basically the same. The 8 & 9 genuinely feel like different instruments than just guitars.
Going from 7 to 8 feels way different than going from 6 to 7.
How does it feel going from an 8 to a 9?
@@mikedills132 8 to 9 is about the same as 6 to 7. The big difference is just how thick the 8th string is going 7 to 8. Going 7 to 9 they are both basically bass guitar strings haha
In terms of scale shapes if you tune it so you are doubling higher strings it's no problem.
I find my 9th string lacks potency on the fundamental frequency... maybe its something I could fix with tone adjustments, but I am tempted to look into custom string gauges and pickups to make the low end full like a real bass
Though, this is probably worsened that my guitar is built for a C# on the 9th, but i have it detuned to double drop B
(B F# B E A D G b e)
@@joekeith2819 double drop B is REALLY low on a guitar. That's the low string on a 6 string bass.
My 9 string isn't close to as thick as my B string on my basses and even the bass can get "flappy" down there.
Especially if you try to do any close choral stuff.
You can try thicker strings but you'll probably have to re-bore your tuning peg and, important, get a new truss rod or get it reinforced.
I had a friend who put the string of a 4 string bass on a Mexican strat, it literally bent the neck/truss rod in less than a week.
taking an 8 string to college! big step up from 6 strang
theArchive1O have fun, good luck!! :D
Has it worked out well so far?
This is about 7 years late but I really enjoyed this video. I made the jump to 8's a few years ago and could not be happier. I get goosebumps so often when playing chords on an 8 string.
I just picked up an RG8. Thanks for the video brother. Great work!
Pretty decent guitar, get the frets cleaned up if they are sharp and new tuners, idk if they Improved or not, I got a used RG8PB and the tuners were awful, especially when you have to tune 8 stings, the rest was great tho.
The only change I'd suggest is new tuners (locking if possible) and swapping out those pickups. The guitar you have now is pretty good (especially for the price) but it can be on par with the really expensive ones if set up right
I got one today and im loving it although idk how to write anything with the F# string 😂
7 years later, I got an RG8MS, I'm bewildered 😳
This video came out just in time, I'm getting my first 8 for Christmas and definitely want to try out some of the extended chords, they sound awesome
Had an rg8 and got rid of it, truly missed it and recently picked up an rg2228 and I'm in love with it, love the videos dean! Thanks and please keep them coming!
Wow that's an absolutely incredible instrument wow
Just got a 8 string for Christmas! This videos is huge for me thank you so much
Thanks man, this helped me a lot as a beginner. Hope you do more!
i just got an rg8 and its amazing this video is helping me alot thank you
Definitely keep doing these
I liked this one a lot more then the last one. Much better. Keep it coming if you have the time to make them. I have an 8 but currently I have been using it by baring similar chord patterns as my 6. Its not bad on the 7 sting but the low F# is harder to fit in this way. I love the blend of low and high you have here. Will be practicing these patterns in all chords.
Dean
New sub and thanks for content. Really good to see 8 string guidance.
I picked up an 8 string after witnessing the majesty that is Tosin Abasi and it just fit. I have massive hands and the larger scale length always felt so much more comfortable. I have little or no basic training on 6 string - I played in my youth but didn't ever take lessons, lots of ear learning and barre chords so I'm essentially, starting learning guitar on a 30" scale 8 string. I do love it.
I'm now (in my 40s) taking lessons and trying to build my theory knowledge and understanding but the one thing I've always found lacking was chord shapes for the 8 string and how to incorporate the additional strings where possible. I know I should be able to add extra notes once i know the notes in the chord but...
I've seen you have a couple of other vids on chords on 8 string so I'll check them out but any other content re chords would be awesome.
I'm an idiot. I bought an 8 string, even though I can barely play the 6 string I have. Thanks for the video, I'll definitely need to study it.
Aceox you could just take out the top two strings and ta da
Thanks for the tutorial! Looking someday to play one but still learning scales and music theory
Great video please continue
Just bought my first last night. It arrives on Friday
Need some more great 8 string lessons!
Thanks Wolverine!
Yo dude loved this video, keep it up!
I love you Dean!
Awesome!
Great video and pretty useful too....which is a very rare phenomenon in these channels :-) Keep on!
perfect timing, i just subbed a few hours ago for your 8 string stuff :)
Ditto
+teddeeh YAY
Really useful!
thanks bro ! cheers !
I’m picking up and 8 string soon. I went from a 4 string bass straight to a 6 string and I enjoyed the little bit of extra challenge. I like having variety with music. I may not always use all the strings, but they’re there if/when I need them. I work with a bunch if experimental musicians so they work well as compositional tools too when writing new material. We all play mostly metal so having the lower notes is nice, my buddy has a 7 string, but i also like lower notes for my own personal stuff that isn’t specifically to be “heavy”. Plus after playing a 6 string bass, my normal guitars feel tiny and cramped on a smaller neck.
EXACT same situation for me lol
ive played on a 7 for about 10 years and just decided to buy the ibanez rg8, it was on the lower end id say but its a ton of fun, i can see myself getting a kiesel in the future
Very helpful!!
Just made my own 8 string guitar.. Start to educate!
Thanks
Idk if it would be dumb to ask but will there ever be lesson vids like this for 7 string? Or will watching these 8 strings be just as beneficial since i have basic theory knowledge? Thanks
Love your videos sir. I'm not an 8 string guy but your videos are great o3o b
where I can buy those caind of frets? I have an 8 string guitar with bad fretting job
Have you tried chords and arpeggios in E4(330Hz)BGDAEBG1(49Hz) or G4(392Hz)DAEBGDA1(55Hz)? If your 1st string slot has a scale length longer than 26.5"/67cm, then you may have difficulty tuning up to G4.
What guitar is that you are playing?
I’ve played a six for 33 years,a seven for 5 years and recently got an eight, hold my beer
that headless is beautiful, what is it?
wait. wolverine shirt. wolverine beard. ok I'm on board.
Couple questions! What kind of guitar is that? Glast?
Is that an F hole.. inlay?
Do you have to cut you beard like that or does it just... Grow?
Great video! Very informative!!
feels harder on your fingers than a 5/6 strings bass? im a bass player and want to give a try on 8 guitar
are you in the fb 7-8 string users group? if so good to see you
These videos have been super helpful. I really like your guitar too man, what is that??
HEY ! just found your video THANKYOU this is exactly what ive been looking for to help me make an informed decision on getting an 8 string custom made! What guitar is that!? its stunning! Cheers Rob UK
That looks like it might have been built by Drinkwater Guitars, it's a local place in Oakland, ME in the USA
I HAVE THAT TABLE!
IT SUCKS SO BAD
so im getting an 8 string soon, i've been thinking alot of about tuning it.
i often play in DROP A & STANDARD E
so i thought of this tuning; AEADGBE, so i have drop A power chords aswell as normal Standard E playing.
but im unsure what to do with the 8th string.
i was thinking of making it another A, an octave down
AAEADGBE, so i can play heavy as hell metal stuff
but that might make the string too loose , what do you think?
Mellow, a lot of players use eBGDAEAE. this gives you those drop D cords rooted on your bottom two strings. Tosin Abasi does a good explanation of this tuning on a UA-cam video lesson.
Dylan Allen sounds like a good idea aswell!
Dylan Allen +1 that's my favorite tuning. EBEADGBe is another favorite. Got the drop on top with a full normal set below.
Hey man, what gauges do you use on your 7th and 8th string? Is there a gauge you prefer if you do drop E on the 8th? What scale length is your guitar
my 8 is an .86 my 7 is a .63
and this guitar is a 28" scale
Awesome man, what strings do you use
?Love your lesson, who is the guitar luthier or what brand model
Pretty sure thats a .strandberg theyre fucking expensive as hell but they are super good
Yolou1024 nope. Not a strandberg. Look at the body shape it's drastically different plus look at the tuning machines also very different every single strandberg has fanned frets this one does not so it is not a strandberg
Caroline from what it looks like, it might be a Fodera?
what kind of guitar is that????
What kind of guitar is that
Whats the radius on that fretboard? Looks like its dead flat but wouldn't that be way too tiring for your hand?
+Sten Martens almost, its 20"
What guitar is that???
which guitar is that?!?! i would kill to have one
Thought I was going to fall asleep watching this.
Relaxation Soundwaves thought I was going to get head the other night. Life's a disappointment ey?
It is funny that your comment can be related to your name
You can legit get them for super cheap off amazon, got a "used" RG8 for $120.
It would definitely help if you could put up some chord charts. I was kind of lost throughout this
i have the whole transcription available on my Patreon page
But can it djent?
I tought I was going to fall asleep watching this but I didn't. :C
IS THAT A HERACROSS TATTOO
+UndyingFetus666 damn straight it is
There's a real easy work-around if you come from a 6-string and want to pick up 8-string quickly. Tune the 8-string so that 3-8 strings are standard intervals, with 2 extra high strings for 1 and 2. If you root off of the base string for your relativity, nothing changes, and now you have 2 extra strings in the high range to play with. I did all my scales and modes, arpeggios, inversions, etc. on tables to learn the high strings, but it's muscle memory from the lower strings just moved up a fret or two, depending on which mode you're using. Very efficient way to do it. ua-cam.com/video/rO6EzQVwlyE/v-deo.html
What happened to the head of his guitar
Aiden Bailey I’m thinking about that too hahahahaha hahahahaha 😂
Bruh, it’s a headless
What is that guitar?? Its delicious...
+teddeeh its an oakland axe factory falcon. best guitar ive ever touched

*Just for my reference.*
so i love how your guitar has an f-hole that isn't actually a hole
DjHANISHAN Paul Gilbert did that with one of his Ibanez guitar
Dean: Very nice demo, Sir. :) Most people who play an 8 string electric guitar are ""acid" or "heavy metal" idiots. :) Every note they play sounds the same.....there is NO change in pitch when they play across the fretboard, as everything is so horrifically distorted. Your demo is much different, better and with more articulate playing. :). Also, what brand guitar are you
using ? Thank you for your help. :) Antoine
Typical classical snob, calling the ,ajority of the people who use the instrument idiots. Thats the main problem with the entire classical community, their heads are so far up their own Assens, they basically go inside out. The goes for seniors, kids and inbetween. You maybe should look at your own playing before critiquing others, when quality matters so much to you. If people find that kind of playing fun then they should just do it, that goes for everyone, the millisecond you try and put material quality over something subjective you loose the whole point of music.
@@l0rd_breeigo-sama954 Amazing and not surprising. :) We give Dean a compliment on his good judgement and playing skills....and YOU turn into something negative. :)
Happy New Year. :)
@@globalonemusic2381 you know you Can like something without demeaning something Else in the process. But such is the way of some people. I was not the one who TURNED it int something negative, you did that in your 2nd sentence.
A lot people came here to learn 8 string guitar and also can't play 6 string guitar properly am I right? Haha
Too much yak, and not enough playing.
Chris Pile "yak" is an animal. Not an adjective, maybe in the urban dictionary. I see where you're going with it tho. The video says for beginners. Imbecile.
FELL ASLEEP. Dude show ,e some stuff by Playing. No more talking.
Comes with old age
bla bla bla.
